John Crane #3

Shot Clock

Rate this book
The fate of the world depends on who’s still standing when the clock runs out.

The world's elites gather at a remote luxury hotel deep in the Canadian Rockies to plot the course of the planet. Agent John Crane is tasked to monitor who shows up and who's talking to whom. But someone else has a very different agenda, and the conference is a carefully laid trap. When it’s sprung, the hotel becomes a killing ground. Cut off from the outside world, Crane finds himself leading a group of survivors that includes his nerdy billionaire boss, the enigmatic and deadly woman he loves, and one badly wounded old man whose death could bring about the end of the world.

Isolated, ill-equipped, and hunted by heavily armed mercenaries, their only hope is to keep moving, keep fighting, keep one step ahead of their enemies. Can John Crane keep this mismatched team alive until help arrives and head off disaster, or is the world doomed to tumble into chaos and war?

John Crane returns in Shot Clock, his most dangerous adventure yet.

Growing up in rural Virginia, Mark Parragh seized on stories—spy stories in particular—to escape the isolation and monotony of real life. He grew up with a deep love for old James Bond movies and Mission Impossible reruns on TV, and survived on a cache of forgotten paperbacks he discovered in the attic. He devoured books by Alistair MacLean, Eric Ambler, and Robert Ludlum when he was clearly too young and impressionable to be reading such things.

Mark Parragh is the author of the John Crane series of spy thrillers. He currently lives in a much less rural part of Virginia with his wife and young daughter.

A lot of the reading that I list on goodreads, is strictly for the joy of reading, and the entertainment value that it provides. There is some reading that I do because I want to learn and remember, and be able to use it my job setting. Mark Parragh's "John Crane" series falls into the latter category, and is progressively moving up the ladder. I don't know if John Crane has reached the level of Logan Dodge or John Puller, but he is closing the gap rapidly. Like the first two books, this third one was really a delight to read; and it continued to develop the characters of Josh and Swift. The first half of the book I did not get read quickly, but I find the last half hard to put down.
The next book, and what Mark Parragh does with the ending of "Shot Clock" will determine what I do with the next (and I am sure that there will be more) books in the series. He will be challenged to keep this story as interesting and compelling as it has been.
If you are looking for a series of book that are entertaining, and compel you to keep reading -- I would recommend the "John Crane" series by Mark Parragh.

Excellent

Great characters, great story, and an ending that demands more of the same. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Best John Crane book yet

Mark Parragh is a great thriller writer. He creates interesting plots and keeps them moving at good clips with just enough details to ground everything without bogging everything down in a morass technical specs. And John Crane is an interesting character. character. The first two books were good but suffered a little from a lack of strong supporting characters. With Shot Clock Parragh has hit his stride his and it all falls into place. Crane at last has a pair of great foils with the idealistic Josh and the ruthless Swift. With Crane balancing the two it is a great team. The plot is tight with the good guys under siege and deeply outgunned and outmanned. Parragh adds some big reveals in the uber plot that bode exciting developments in future books. This was a can't put down book that I didn't want to end.

A very interesting ploy.

The book has a very interesting main plot with interesting sub plots. If you enjoy fast moving international thrillers then you should enjoy reading the books in this series by Mark Parragh.

Number 3 lost me

Books 1 and 2 were great! Like the first to die hards. Fast and captivating. Shot clock started out as expected but the plot and ending is a little too far our for me.

Loved the first two books but was disappointed in this one. I'm all for conspiracy themes except this one just went a little too far. Even unleashing the bounds of my imagination wouldn't let the premise of this one go unchallenged.

Action

The bad guys have everything covered, all the plans in place. John Crane is an amazing hero all set for an uneventful convention when things go wrong. At the end Josh and Crane have found a purpose.

Shot Clock

Mark has a way of bringing John Crane to life. His characters are active and interesting. When you think they are going to turn right they turn left. Action heroes are great, but they need speed bumps to keep it interesting and Mark provides them!
