I received a copy of Twilight Spell for free from the author, and I am voluntarily giving a review.

This review is 100% honest.

So, I went into this book with an open mind, even though part of me was pessimistically like 'Oh, another vampire book, cool." I love vampires, but I feel like that trope is very played out in YA. I'm looking at you Twilight, Marked and Vampire Diaries. Also, I got about 35% into the book before I decided I just didn't want to read anymore. I really tried to keep going because I hate DNF-ing books, but I didn't find it very engaging. I have other books that I could spend my time reading.

Let's start with things I did not like. I found the characters to be horribly under developed. I still can not tell you much about who Callie is as a person. I don't know what her strengths, weaknesses or motivations are. I found I didn't really care about any of the other characters. I didn't care about the romance, and I found the writing to be long winded and didn't really sound like YA to me. For some reason I felt like I was reading a textbook about this world. (It took me back to high school when I would fall asleep in class). I felt like each characters POV was giving us a watered down version of events, if that makes sense, like they didn't feel anything. It was as if they were these outsiders looking at these events happening to other people and not themselves.

Honestly, I just sat the book down and I can't tell you what it's even about. I remember that there's a girl looking for her sister and she stumbles upon another world filled with magical creatures. That's all I remember.

So, you're probably wondering if you didn't like it, then why give it two stars and not one or none. Well, There are things I did enjoy.

I found that the story reminded me of these series of books I read in high school called Vampire Kisses, they were these not very well written, but highly entertaining books about a goth girl who falls in love with a vampire. This book reminded me of those, so it gave me some nostalgia feels. It was mildly entertaining (not enough to hold my complete interest), but I didn't gain anything from it. I also think this book has a good plot, but wasn't executed very well. I think there are good bones to this story, but overall it's under developed. I think it would benefit from some more editing, some more character development, and some more just overall feeling in the book.

Also, the author is very nice.

It seems quite a few people enjoyed this book, so if you like vampires and books only for entertainment purposes, give it a try, but it just didn't work for me.

A new series for fans of A Shade of Vampire, Twilight, Vampire Girl, and more. It is a 5-book series and Twilight's Spell is the first book. It's a fun adventure story in a fantasy world. The realm is ruled by a handsome vampire prince, and filled with magical creatures. A delightful engaging read!

Callie (Callendra) and her twin sister Rosamon are seventeen and lost their parents when they were five and have been adopted by a lovely couple, the Densens. They are not identical twins, but have a very close bond between each other. Callie has black hair and very unusual violet coloured eyes, while Rosamon has blonde hair and blue eyes. Callie’s gets bullied at high school due to her odd looks and her somewhat antisocial behaviour. She’s not really into the usual teenage stuff like shopping, gossip and boys.

Their only real friend is a boy called Noah, who lives nearby and looks out for both of the sisters, in and out of school. It’s the last day of term, before the summer break and their final year at high school. The sisters and Noah arrange to meet up at the old church after school, one of their favourite places to have a bit of fun and scare themselves silly, as well in the dark and gloomy aisles and surroundings. They have a slightly scary experience that night and Noah warns them to stay away from the church.

When Callie wakes to find her sister missing, she follows her across the fields and into the dark church. When Rosamon disappears into a shadowy alcove, Callie follows her, but then finds herself in a strange world, near the top of a hill, with what looks like a city below. Although she came straight through behind her sister, she can’t see her. What she does see are dragons, strange human like figures with huge pointy ears and others she has never seen the like of before. On seeing other humans being attacked, she decides to stay off the main path and try to make it to the city below and ask about her sister.

The place the sisters have ended up, is called Shadowland and it is run by a vampire prince called Logan. Humans are kept as slaves. When Logan runs into the path of Callie, he believes her to be a spy and this is when matters get more complicated. He has never smelt a human like her and is drawn to her smell, but must fight against his attraction until he finds out what or who she is and why she is there. Logan’s sister tells him of the importance, to the vampire realm, of the violet eyed human he has found.

A great read which flows quickly and has some great characters. Characters with special gifts and powers. You get a mix of fae, human vampire hunters, humans treated as chattel and slaves, trolls, witches etc. Sides are getting close to another great war and angers are rising. There is a great prequel, Dawn’s Shadow, which introduces you to the sisters and their friend and protector, Noah. I will certainly look out for the authors’ other books, as this was easy to read and let your imagination run wild, with the different aspects of magical beings in comparison to what you find usually. Easy to recommend to others.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Twilight's Spell in the first installment of the Vampire Magic series that takes place in a realm called the Shadowland where vampires with magic gifts rule while defending themselves from vampire hunters and the dark fae. Humans also live in this realm but are treated like chattel and a source of food for the vampires. Dragons and witches are also present. A human named Callie finds herself inexplicably entering this world from Oregon while searching for her lost twin sister. She eventually crosses paths with the vampire prince, Logan, who rules over the land. Logan thinks her a spy for the enemy and keeps her close at hand as a well treated prisoner, even though he can't resist how good her blood smells. An attraction between the two characters begins to evolve. In the meantime, someone close to Logan is kidnapped and Callie gets a surprise visitor from Oregon. Eventually Callie's worlds collide leading her to make a choice between continuing the search for her twin sister and heading back home and away from the dangers of the Shadowland. Good start to a young adult, vampire series in terms of setting the stage. Callie came across as a bit shallow at times. It wasn't clear to me as a reader how she could be so naive about the world around her and those that have been so close to her for so long. The concept of vampires with magic gifts opens the door for a lot of creativity. I wanted more backstory of how the Shadowland came to be in terms of the vampires ruling and the fae versus vampire war. The dragons seemed a bit out of place, too. Regardless, I'm intrigued enough to continue the series. Highly recommend for fans of A Shade of Vampire series.

First of all: you should read the novella which is provided in the authors page for free because it helps to understand the world setting and characters better!

About the book: I enjoyed the book and I can’t wait to read on.
Callie, even though she is only 17 years old, is a strong character who would do anything to find her missing twin sister. She follows her through the shadows into an unknown place where she realizes that humans are at the bottom of society and either slaves or cattle. Not only that: in this world mystical beings/ supernaturals that are considered fantasy for us, are real: dragons, fae, vampires, etc. Nonetheless, she doesn’t get intimidated and is willing to risk everything to find Rosamunde.

I can’t wait to find out what happens to her, her sister and the other characters she encountered throughout the story!

Very slow but promising start to a series.
I found the story slow. Going over the same lines again and again. Repeating inner thoughts about her sister / his attraction to her blood and so on.
However and there is a big however. 3/4's of the way through the book it picked up and I'm half way through book 2 and it has thoroughly improved.
It's a great story line, it's just that I found book #1 slow and to descriptive of their inner thoughts. I like a faster paced story where you get sucked in and can invisage it in your head.

I can honestly say, it was worth continuing with book #1 As I am now fully immersed in the story line.

My rating for this book is 3.5 stars. But book two is heading for a five star review.

If you like the supernatural/paranormal stories then this is a good read.
Welcome to the Shadowland, where vampires with special abilities live, as well as humans, Fae and who knows what other creatures.
I enjoyed the adventure so far with Callie and Logan and their point of view. Sometimes I just wish that it would go into more detail as I wanted more, more of the background information and the character connection, but there is enough to keep you wanting to read.
I enjoyed the story line and can't wait to see what the next book brings for Callie and Noah and if they get the chance to find Rosamon. I'm am also curious how Logan is going to react when he has found Callie missing.

This is really good. So much so I didn't want to put it down. It has a great original storyline with great believable characters. It's one of those books I want to say so much about but I don't want to spoil it for other readers. Sela Croft is definitely an author I will be adding to my authors to read list. And I look forward to reading the next book by this author. If you enjoy Urban Fantasy and Paranormal romance that involves other realms, witches, vampires, shapeshifters, and humans with special abilities then you are truly going to love this book. I was a bit disappointed with this book. It took about a third of the way through to actually get me interested. Almost put it to the side but pushed through hoping it would get better. Once it hit the mid point it started to get a bit interesting but it is a very very slow build. Also the dialogue is a bit stiff and unrealistic. It does finish in a cliffhanger which usually has me quickly reaching for book 2 but with this one I’m sorta thinking I might leave it. I wish I had better things to say about it. Had it on my TBR list for a while. Loved the cover though.

Not really sure if I like this book too much. I saw A lot of people post about it and I was a little disappointed. Callie ends up in shadowland which is another world and she somehow is not shocked by it? Seeing dragons and vampires and things like that you’re not shocked? She was too accepting of everything so that was a little too much for me. The story could be good I skimmed through ALOT of the pages. It does leave you hanging at the end and I’m intrigued with the story so hopefully it actually gets better

Interesting

Interesting... I liked this book but I didn't love it. It's off to a great start but was drawn out and had lots of mystery surrounding it. Unfortunately the draw wasn't as strong as I wished it was but I've read so many amazing books that this one didn't pull me in like the others. I am interested to know what happens next and I Callie finds her sister and what the future holds for her and Logan. Maybe the next book will suck me in and this one just started off slow.

This was actually a really good book. It took a minute to get into, but once all the setup was complete, it was worth it. The story is filled with suspense and tension, just waiting for her to reveal the next big twist.
The characters are great and the story is believable even though it takes places in a different dimension full of cursed vampires and fae.
I'm really excited to get into this series.

Loved it

Love this story, damn cliffhanger,
Callie is a great spunky character, who seems to give as much as she gets, even though she is only a high school student, I can't wait to read the next installment, I can't decide whether Logan is good or bad, so you need to read and decide yourself, what more is there to say vampires, check, magic, check, agreat story so far, check, onto book 2 I go, check.

This book brings you into a magical world along with a girls known to be misfit who is in search of her sister. I found this a interesting read but I suggest you start with the prequel and it really helps set the tone for this book. I would love to read more of this series.

2.5 for me. I had a hard time getting through this book. The dialogue felt unnatural and forced for the sake of the story. This made it hard to really connect with the characters and the story.
I did like the concept of the story itself but the way it was executed especially the characters just fell flat for me.

I love anything that has Vampires and Supernaturals in it

I love anything that has Vampires and Supernaturals in it. Callie is a great and strong character. I am sad to say plot and speed of book did nothing for me.I will read Sela next book in this series to see if I like it. I might try this book again at a later time

This is the first Vampire type book I have read. It took me a little while to get into it and apart from the occasional lusty comments how hot a guy was, I quite enjoyed the story and would be interested in reading the next book. So I think that last statement alone stands as the best recommendation I can give. Liked the storyline very much.

This book was good. I expected a little more romance for some reason but all in all this was a good book. There was adventure, danger, vampires and all you need. However, the ending was a big cliffhanger in my opinion which I didn’t really enjoy so now I have I to go and read the next book in the series.

This book is good. A real page turner. Can be frustratingly slow in some parts, but that may be me getting caught up in the excitement of the moment lol. If you like/love vampire novels, I HIGHLY recommend this series! I can't wait for book 2!

A differant kind of Vampire story. I was intregued with the varied characters, Fae, Vampires and humans, the endless fight between light and dark. My heart was caught by Cassie's search for her sister against extreme obstacles. A do not miss read.

Good Storyline

I really like the characters and the storyline. However, I really think the book needed to be edited better. There is a lot of grammar, punctuation and spelling errors. Some are so bad that it makes a sentence confusing to read. Other than that it's a good book.

Vampires and Fae

A good story line. Will be interesting to see who or what is the real villain. I like the take on the creation of vampires. It's different from most. Will get the next book in the series.

Boring read...

I liked the cover but the storyline was boring. The writing style wasn't for me. Analytical descriptions and a lot of telling on the characters emotions. Long winded and too much inner dialogue. Couldn't finish. Can't recommend this boring book.
