Finnegan O’Shea

The Sons of Munster have been living this life for generations. We have our own protocol, our own traditions, dating back to when two families merged and created our syndicate in Ireland. Now, we have our strongholds in Philly and Chicago, and the wrong man holds the highest position. The day my uncle decided to betray us, he signed his own death warrant, and after a five-year hitch in the can, I’m ready to take everything from him. In order to ensure the demise of his management, I have to get close to him. I need to earn his trust and that of his closest associates. I’ll be the top earner he wants me to be. I’ll be the very image of a conventional family man.

For that to happen, this Irish bastard has to find himself a wife. Someone sweet and compliant who will stand by my side and make me look like I have too much to lose to screw over the head of the family.

Emilia Porter

When it rains, it pours, so I guess it’s been pouring for eighteen years now. Being from an old mining town that’s full of drunk cautionary tales, I spend my days juggling—and failing—school, work, and paying the bills so my dad can drink himself into a stupor. Then this freaking guy rolls into town in his expensive sports car and thinks I should marry him. This isn’t the fifties, and there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell I’ll marry a well-known mobster. No matter how much money he promises me. No matter how intensely the chemistry sizzles between us.

He asks for three years of marriage. Then I’d be set for life, independent and free to start fresh on my own. Free to walk away. Who the hell does he think he is?

I'm often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There's time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

When a mafia man is romanticized, the author is taking a risk with me. He can't be too much of a monster, and he can't be an unrealistic, he's-really-such-a-good-person either. There's a sweet spot that works for me, and Cara Dee found it.

Finnegan O'Shea is a murderer. And a liar. And a thief. And he's propping himself up to be the next boss of the Sons of Munster syndicate. THAT will take some bloodshed.

Emilia Porter is just a pawn in his plan. He tells her that from the beginning, along with lying about all the other stuff. "No, I've never killed anyone." But she will be compensated for it. He chooses her specifically because of her shitty life and how much she wants out.

He didn't count on the sass. Or the chemistry. Or how she slowly thaws to him, instead of being afraid, and puts him in his place.

I didn't expect to love Finnegan as much as I did. I didn't expect to love an eighteen year old heroin either.

But I did because Cara Dee can write anything for me.

This is Book 1 in a new series about this couple. The ending is a mild cliffhanger, nothing that had me throwing my Kindle across the room.

I'm a reader of 99% MM romance these days. I don't typically jive with MF authors anymore. There's just too much cheese, soap opera drama, and too many doormats. But this wasn't that. Not by a long shot.

reread as i heard second book is coming soon
To all my friends here: Read this freakin book.

I never have to be afraid with this author as i know she never disappoints me. Thats why this was me finding out she has another M/F romance...

..and then like this when i found out its mafia, arranged marriage..

...with virgin hero...

I mean whats not to love right?

As i was reading my review back, i said before that beginning was very fast for me and than the book slowed down, now when i read this for the second time i actually think the opposite. Very slow the first 30% of the book and than it finally started all happening :). And i have to say i enjoyed it much more the second time, all the little digs from heroine, funny parts i missed the first time... it was just perfect.

I loved both Hero and heroine, and i was suprised since heroine is only 18yo which im not normally fan of, but it worked, both of them were believable, characters were developing during the book which we dont see often and i just dont have words, i love how this author makes you fall in love with the characters.

Also, heroine is not doormat! Someone call the romance police.

It is To be continued book even though it doesnt end with crazy cliffhanger.

There aren't many authors from whom I'll read M/F romance these days, having come to prefer M/M. However, Cara Dee has proven to me over and over again that if she writes it, chances are I'll love it. That certainly held true with This Life I.

I love me a good "bad boy" romance and if the females are strong and opinionated and give as good as they get, then count me in! This Life I is chock full of strong women and I appreciated every one of them.

"We're a bunch of liars, but we love fiercely, and we're loyal to a fault"

Finnegan O'Shea is a "bad boy" in almost every sense of the word. He's part of an Irish- American mafia syndicate, called Sons of Munster, and he has lied, stolen, killed, and done time in prison. He does what he feels he needs to, to protect those he loves. Is he a good guy? Hmmm....no, no I wouldn't say so, but he's not all bad, either. I think he does have a good heart in there somewhere, and though he is very pragmatic, he's a bit of a romantic, too. And, he does have a moral compass, it's just a bit skewed from the "normal" world. In order to advance in the SoM syndicate, Finnegan needs to be a family man, so it looks like it's time for our mobster to find himself a wife.

Emilia Porter is not quite 18 when she first encounters Finnegan O'Shea. She's young, but she's not fragile and she's not stupid. She lacks life experience, but hasn't had an easy life and had to grow up way too early. This is something I could heavily relate to. At first, Emilia is intimidated and disgusted by Finnegan, because she knows who he is and what he stands for. When he offers her a way out of her shitty, dead-end life, and offers to make sure she is set for life, if only she marries him, Emilia hesitates. Does she want out? Yes, but can she stomach the price? That question takes her longer to answer.

I was a bit surprised I warmed to Emilia as fast as I did. I mean, she's young and I was concerned, at first, that she'd act more her age than she did. There were moments when her age showed, as well it should, but by and large, she was a strong young woman with opinions she wasn't afraid to express and she gave Finnegan a run for his money, so to speak. She stood up to him from the beginning and while things were black and white for her, at first, she finds herself in a world of shades of gray (not the bad kink kind). I found that not only did I like Emilia, I respected her and she insisted that Finnegan do so, as well. Go her!

"Tá mo chroí istigh ionat."

As Emilia and Finnegan got to know each other, they found so much more than they expected. They didn't expect their chemistry to be off the charts hot, and they definitely did not expect to fall in love. I look forward to seeing what their future is like and how they as individuals, as well and as a couple, learn to adjust and grow.

Now that I've finished This Life I for the second time, I find I'm looking forward to book 2, even more than before and I suspect book 2 will be a bit darker, as well. Life is about to get really interesting for our young couple and those they hold dear.

★5 AMAZING Stars★

I was very skeptical about this book because the cover looks too sweet for my kind of books I like to read...But I was so wrong...OMG, I loved everything about this book.

Finnegan or Finn is an Irish mobster. He is sexy as hell, rich and very faithful in his traditions and family. He wants to become the Head, the Boss like he was supposed to, after his grandfather retired, only his uncle had other plans. To gain trust from his uncle, he has to get married. So now he is in search of a wife.

If she could suspect that something wrong was happening to Stephan at the beginning of Season 5, why should not be capable of detecting Damon is somewhere around and could be rescued? Description from delenabacktoeachother.blogspot.com. I searched for this on bing.com/images

Emilia is a poor young girl who had an awful life as a child. Her mother died (or so that's what her father told her) and she was raised by her father. Her father never loved or cared for her. Her dream is to graduate and leave town and her father. She is willing to do everything in her power to get out of there. And just like that, she became Finnegan's target for a perfect wife...Only that's not the only reason that Finnegan chooses her. Emilia doesn't know her true identity and her bloodline...All her life was a lie.

Emilia and Finn are amazing characters. I loved everything about them. I loved Finn for his golden heart and his amazing family. I liked his determination for gaining Emilia and her trust. How he fought for her. He was honest from the beginning.

ian somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and nian image

I loved Emilia for everything, for her strength, for her sass, made Finn run for his money. I liked how their relationship evolved. I knew Finn was from the start head over hills in love with her. When they touch each other. ...wow. Hot DAMN those scenes where HOT.

DELENA 4x07 wallpaper in The Damon & Elena Club

I liked the secondary characters as well. I hope for a close story for Patrick and Sarah and can't wait to read the next book. There are so many secrets to learn, so many things to discover. There are still missing pieces from this huge amazing puzzle that is this book and I can't wait to read and discover everything.

This book is very well written, with amazing characters and storyline. I didn't get bored even for a second, I savored the entire story...And that ending...

I highly recommend! 💗

This isn't your normal Cara Dee story. MM full of heart and hope. Grabs you right in the feels.
Nope it's a MF crime story, with fake relationship, two people who are going to f*ck each other over at first chances, annnnnddd they are both virgins.

Yeah, Yeah, count me in on this one.

Explaining what I loved about this story is like explaining to people why you are watching reality TV in earnest. It's a big train wreck. Over the top characters. You laugh at completely inappropriate times. And yet you want more. Seriously this is Finn and Emilia's story. Finn is not the perfect mobster with a heart of gold type. Oh no. He is a murderer and a thief. He couldn't care less about doing the right thing. It's doing the thing that will earn him money, loyalty and power. I think that's why I fell in love with this character so far. Because he was so unapologetically an asshole. Then there is Emilia. She wants out. Out of her life, get a leg up. She knows 'trying hard' and you'll get the brass ring isn't going to work out for this girl. So damn straight she takes up Finn's offer.

But when they are together - as much as they loathe the other - there is undeniable chemistry between them. You literally root for these two knuckheads to fall in love because they deserve it. This story has all the humor, sexy times and flying bullets you could imagine from a crime/mafia romance story.

Cara has promised a series. And like any Cara book it's worth the wait. I ended the book immediately wanting II. I know when it comes, I'll be devouring these two all over again.

This Life Books 1& 2 By Cara Dee.

A few years ago, I really started reading. Before I had KU or a working kindle, I found Twilight Fan Fiction.

This is where I was introduced to Cara Dee.

Cara has written many Fan Fictions and is an amazing author.

Which is how I found This Life originally.

This Life is one of my favorite stories that I read over and over.

Do you like Mob stories? Here you have it.

I found out that not only did she publish it as an original, but it’s in KU.

Consider me sold.

First things first.

While there are several parts of the story that are the same, it is totally different. There is death in this series. There is smut. It's a slow smut, but it is there.

Most importantly, the main female lead, Emelia Potter O’Shay, aka Princess, starts as a weak girl and grows. I really loved reading it.

Finn, aka Whistler, not going to lie probably will piss you off. He knows best and all that.

*insert eye roll*

But, you learn to love him in spite of it.

Insomnia really hit me hard this week in part because of these books.

I don’t want to give too much away, but know that this will be a book set I will read again. Like I reread the original Fan Fiction.

Would I recommend this set of stories? Yes. 100%

I also highly recommend Cara Dee’s books as a whole.

Not gonna rate this book. It's just... I'm not one who goes to church but I believe in God. And I feel like authors should have some respect about people who do. Just like I have respect for people who don't believe in God. Yeah yeah, freedom of speech and alll. I wish authors would give some kind of warning that they're going to talk bad about God. Other than this ramble, if you're not religious and love arranged-marriage-mafia books, go for it!

I’m a big Cara Dee fan, so I always get excited when she has a new release out. This Life I is the first book in a new series about the Mob and the two main characters, Finn and Emilia have stolen my heart. Finn is a man on a mission. After getting out of jail he is ready to get revenge against his uncle who betrayed his family. He plans to take everything away from him, but to succeed he needs to get close to him. He plans to convince his uncle he is nothing more than a family man who can be a top earner and worthy of everyone’s trust. The easiest way to make that happen is to marry a sweet, easygoing, compliant woman. If he has a family at stake, surely no one would assume he would risk that to overthrow the head of the family.

Emilia has not had an easy life. She tries to jungle school, work and paying the bills her drunk father is incapable of handling. When Finn rolls up and tells her they should marry she wants no part of it. The offer of three years and then enough money to buy her freedom and start a new life is ultimately too much to resist. So what if he is a well know mobster? Who cares if they have a crazy string chemistry? It’s basically a job and she knows all about busting her behind for work, surely this won’t be much different. Except, Emilia is definitely not the sweet compliant girl Finn thought he needed and Finn is a lot more than a flashy mobster. As Finn and Emilia get surrounded by danger with enmities developing all around them, their business arrangement gets complicated. Mixing business with pleasure always presents problems and as feelings develop, Finn realizes he may end up with something not worth losing after all.

I enjoyed This Life I immensely and cannot wait for book two! Cara Dee worked her usual magic and I am all aboard for these characters, their explosive passion and the action and danger surrounding them.

This story was a favorite as a fan fiction, so I couldn't wait to read the published version! This first book, of what will be a trilogy, takes us from when Finn first sees Emilia as a sixteen year old in a picture as one of several possible candidates for an arranged marriage to come. Finn has just gotten out of prison after spending 5 years there after his bust as an 18 y/o participant in a family car theft ring. He's looking to become more legitimate in his family business and for that he will need a wife. This first book of the trilogy follows Finnegan, as Emilia calls him, from those first days of courtship through their wedding, over 2 years later. A tragedy ends this first part. The writing is superb, something I've always loved about this author, along with her ability to weave a colorful and eventful story. I loved the original version too, and this one grabbed me just as hard. Love, sex, humor, and deadly dealings permeate this story. A movie could be made...j/s

i’m unwell.

i thought this was my usual mafia romance but it wasn’t. there were parts that i got bored with so much mafia talk the romance kinda got pushed aside. but still both of the main characters had so much chemistry together i loved them.
the ending got me absolutely sad but i think it was bc i wasn’t expecting this to be such a heavy book, i didn’t read a lot of reviews on it.

i’m also not reading the next one bc this time i read reviews and got some spoilers and i don’t really think i want to put myself through this again.

but to my girlies who love very emotional mafia romances and a bunch of drama, side characters and shit that might make you cry, totally recommend this book!!

also another thing that got me uhhhhhhh what’s going on the book starts and emilia is 17. finn starts pursuing her for business but nothing sexual happened between them at time. still, i could have lived without that like couldn’t she be 18 since the beginning? anyways good luck y’all

I'm often on the fence when it comes to mafia and mobster romances—sometimes they hit the mark, but more often than not, they miss it entirely. This Life falls somewhere in between. On one hand, it’s written by an author whose work I’ve enjoyed in the past, and on the other, it’s a mobster love story that, while far from realistic, is undeniably captivating.

I quickly found myself pulled into the world of the Philadelphia mobster clan, the Sons of Munster. Having met Kellan Ford in a previous spinoff, I was intrigued by him, so diving into this story felt like a natural next step. The real treat, though, was the dynamic between Finnegan and Emilia. I didn’t realize how much I needed their story until I discovered it, but once I did, I was hooked.

There were a few things that gave me pause, though. Emilia is only 18 when she marries Finnegan. While she’s undeniably naive, she’s not necessarily immature—just young, with a natural, nurturing disposition that makes her the perfect fit for this chaotic family. Finnegan, at 25, is still relatively young, but he’s got his head on straight. He knows exactly what he wants for the Sons’ future, but he’s definitely lacking in a moral center, and that’s where Emilia comes in at just the right time.

His approach to their marriage, especially his views on their union, was an interesting mix of endearing and, at times, overbearing. But despite his intensity, Emilia holds her own and proves she’s capable of standing up for herself. The tension in their relationship is real, and while I could feel the genuine love between them, I knew there were challenges ahead that would test them both—and, sure enough, it did.

One thing I really enjoyed was the patchwork/found family dynamic. The way the Sons of Munster come together, each with their own scars and stories, really added depth to the narrative. The chemistry between Finnegan and Emilia was electric, and I loved how quickly they became each other’s center. Their bond felt fitting and real, and I never doubted their feelings for one another.

Overall, This Life was a surprising and satisfying read. It may have its flaws, but the characters, the romance, and the found family aspect made for an engaging story I didn’t know I needed until I had it.

what can I say, I have been a fan of Cara Dee's work for a while now and I have a passion for Mafia guys and this story has both. It is set up with a perfect end for the second book still to come.

Though Finn and Emilia met in unconventional ways being that their marriage was to be a business arrangement for 3 years you can see the two falling in love and accepting each other no matter what or who they are. This is a rare kind of love that not everyone finds in their life time.

Cara is able to draw the reader into her world of crime, lust and love with a touch of loyalty to all that you love.

There is just the right amount of bad boys and criminal activity to keep you lovers of mafia bad boys entertained while loving the romance between Finn and Emilia.

Each character is written to compliment each other and create a real heart and love for all characters. It does end with tragedy but you do get a glimpse of What Finn and Emilia will become as a united front

If you do not go and pre-order or purchase this book on the day it is released you are really missing out on a real diamond. I can't wait to read part two and follow the journey of these two

Positive suprise, I’m glad I picked it up. This is the introduction to some epic shit going down in the next ones. I really hope we’ll stick to Emilia and Finnegan as main characters.
I would like to state that I love the first part of Godfather. And in some ways this novel is like that, looking at the establishment of a new boss and all. Although this is a love story too. I really love the dynamic between out newlyweds and I am very much looking forward to seeing Emilia grow into her role as not just the wife of the boss, but the heart of the syndicate (I know this kind of sound weird written down).
I did not expect to like it this much or see such a well developed world and idea. There is great growth here especially for the characters and not in a non-realistic way. Nothing is immediate. Morals are grey. The core is family. And the structure works.
This has atmosphere and good characters, avoids the cringy stereotypes and establishes a series I will probably be reading very enthusiastically. I feel like something epic is brewing here. Though I should have expected that from sorcerers shouldn’t I?

Finnegan has spent his whole life working towards being the best Son of Munster even if he has to break the law more then usual. Too young to be a head of the family O'Shea, he searches for a bride. Emilia Porter is a senior in high school and his future bride if he has any say. A rocky relationship begins between Emilia and Finn, agreeing to a marriage of three years. As a devout Catholic Finn is hoping to make the marriage a lifetime commitment. Ugh the twist towards the end had me balling my eyes out.

Dee gives the reader all the feels: Laughter, sadness, oh no he didn't, etc moments that make the book come alive. I love me some mobsters and Dee did not disappoint. It is a fine line between making them a ruthless killer and lovable to the women and reader. Dee straddles this line with ease, the reader is rooting for the O'Shea brothers and family and want them to succeed. I can't wait to read more of the Sons of Munster.

This is my first Cara Dee book and I now have another new author to add to my must read more of list. So this is a mafia arranged marriage story with a difference. Finn is the one pulling all the strings and whilst we know his ultimate motive is power he still manages to keep some secrets. The Emilia we meet at the beginning is a young woman fighting to survive her upbringing counting the days down until she can escape then Finn comes into her life. I found myself laughing at inappropriate moments at the guys antics. We do see some of the more brutal moments of mafia life but feel this a scene setting book. We are introduced to all the main players in the family and some of their enemies but there is still so much to discover. I have a feeling that Emilia is going to have alot to say in book two which hopefully won't be long.

Only part 1

OMG, Cara has done it again. I need part 2 pronto. Finn and Emilia didn't have a traditional boy meets girl, girl and boy fall head over heels in love, blah blah blah. Emilia keeps Finn on his toes from start to finish. Will warn now it's light, funny, and sexual tension from the start. But those last few chapters that changes and we start to get into who Finn will become.

Read this when it was initially a fanfic. Author’s writing has improved but I really hated the ending- loss of a a few, loved characters. Interested in reading the second book to see how the story resolved…currently preferring how the fanfic played out.
