Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

So... I can see why the MS/HS me really loved the SVH books, but adult me found it annoying and problematic. There was a lot going on in this book, including a ghostly appearance from one of Jessica's loves who tragically passed away in a high school gang war. It was pretty intense! I can see why the younger me loved this and lived for all the HS drama and boy craze. But can we talk about how petty, annoyingly judgemental and vindictive Jessica Wakefield actually is? Although in this book, Elizabeth wasn't really any better, which was pretty disappointing! The fact that the two of them were fighting over a boy and acting hurt when said boy wanted nothing to do with them after they deceived and hurt him big time, was just...SMH. Many of the friendships were pretty toxic too, especially when it came to Jessica and Lila. There was a lot of trashing of other girls and of each other (i.e. Jessica towards literally everybody).

I forgot that there are multiple POVs in one book and while it was initially confusing, I did enjoy hearing from (almost) everyone's side. Olivia had to be my favorite character in this one because even as an adult, I can still relate to the insecurities she felt and the younger me 100% saw myself in her doubts. Reading this book made me think about my HS days when I would get so caught up in SVH life and wished so much to be like Elizabeth Wakefield LOL especially since she was smart, friendly, and had a wonderful boyfriend in Todd--I think they were my OG OTP! It's funny how memories work because the minute I started reading this, my mind started filling in gaps about previous and future storylines for certain characters. I can't even remember what I did last week, so color me surprised to remember storylines from books I haven't touched for more than a decade!

If there's one thing re-reading this book has shown me, it's that it's better for me to not go near them again so that my happy memories reading these books/this series, will stay untainted. I'll keep these memories of my happy MS/HS days getting lost in these books as they are, thanks very much!

So since this is the only Sweet Valley High book I actually own (which sucks, by the way) so yeah I do need to read all of the books, but this book right here was actually pretty good. First time I thought I would hate it and would DNF it. But then I gave this book a chance and I loved it.

It takes place after Jessica and Elizabeth's junior prom, and the junior class of SVH are entering a talent contest at the countywide battle of the junior classes, and of course, El Carro High starts some drama by taking over their practice spot, ruining their set and planned on pushing Jessica off the thing when she wanted to do the Peter Pan fly thing in the SVH, but thank god Ken stopped it before something truely happened to her.

Also Jessica has been seeing the ghost of her dead boyfriend Christian, who came to her and told her that what she was planning to do was going to be a chain reaction to what happened to him before he died. When Erica pull the stunt and the fight was going to happen, Jessica stood there in fear and thought that she was going to relieve it again, but then had an idea to let Palisades High play their presentation, but played Christian's part and everyone stopped.

I thought for a second that Olivia and Ken broke up over the Erica thing (which to me is really stupid) but I'm glad they didn't after he saved her life. I enjoyed this book and I'm going to hunt down all of them so I can read them all, including senior year.

This one was pretty dull, however it was better than The Big Night.
The way Liz and Jess fight over Devon is sickening.
There were a couple of dynamite quotes in this:-
From Devon to Liz, Jess and possibly Lila "Maybe you girls should get over yourselves" so true Devon, so true.
From Lila to Liz and Jess "You two act as if there's some law that says the Wakefield twins have first dibs on every halfway decent guy in Sweet Valley" that's it Li, you tell 'em.

I recently rediscovered the Sweet Valley series through Kindle Unlimited, and I was excited to dive back into the nostalgia. However, this particular book is one of the few I hadn’t read before, and I have to admit, it’s been a disappointing experience. The writing, which I didn’t notice as a kid, now feels overly cheesy, and the storyline is pretty bland with little substance. It’s funny how some things just don’t hold up the same way when you revisit them.
