Rebecca Winters is on trial for the murder of her husband, Simon. He was found stabbed to death in the bedroom of their home, and with the evidence mounted up around her, she is soon found guilty by a jury.
But one member of that jury is confused by the outcome. Nicola Golding is a budding blogger, her focus being on murder and crime. She does not believe that Rebecca is a murderer, and she decides to investigate the possibility that Simon’s killer could still be out there somewhere.
With nobody there to help her, Nicola recruits a reluctant companion; new chef at the restaurant she works at, Alex Silverstone. But then, more deaths occur. Members of the jury that made the decision to send Rebecca down are found hanged in their homes, and Nicola soon finds herself in a race against time to find the killer before she becomes a victim herself…
When I saw that this was not a Blake novel I was at first a little hesitant.... I have fallen in love with this authors work through Blake and Harrison. However by the end of chapter one of this brand new series, I was suddenly in a love triangle! I love the female lead, and I already feel connected to the hapless and chaotic Nicola. Mr Innes has an amazing ability to write characters with such realism, I’ve known/worked with/been related to every character he lays down and that makes his stories so devour-able, un-put-down-able and leaves me eager for the next instalment, like a good episode of your favourite soap. Bravo Mr Innes, you’re creating an enticing series of books, when we will see them on TV, I wonder?
I really enjoyed reading this book, a quick murder mystery that kept me reading, I couldn't put the book down! I am definitely looking forward to more stories in this series. I truly recommend this book as for me it was well written and good to read
This was the first book of Robert’s I’d read and I cannot wait to read more!
It’s easy to read and refreshing to get into. I enjoyed Robert’s writing style, whilst the plot has you guessing throughout and keeps you well tuned to every single piece of dialogue.
The characters are well rounded and have been developed well. With the right mix of drama, tension and at times comedic relief. By the end of the book, you’re in love with the characters and care for each and everyone of them. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this become adapted into an ITV Drama. I felt myself wanting to read it as fast as I could to see who the culprits were, but found myself trying to slow down, to make it last, as I did not want this to end. I cannot wait for the next instalment.
This was my first time reading one of this author’s novels and it definitely won’t be my last. Great mixture of main characters that I’m sure we’ll see again as this series develops. Definitely stood out with it being about proving a woman innocent after her case alongside the jurors being killed. It was a quick, easy read that I did in about an hour and a half (I didn’t put it down!). I can’t wait for the next book - and I’m definitely going to check out Innes other series.
I really liked it, the characters were well realised and fun and I liked that it felt familiar to the Blake Harte books while standing apart from that series too. We kind of need a crossover between the two series at some point tbh.
A very good start to the series and I'll be awaiting the next book.
It is no secret that I am a fan of Robert Innes. His Blake Harte mysteries have been wonderful. When I saw that he was starting a new series, I had to jump on it! The Hung Jury was a great, quick murder mystery that kept me reading. There were some good LOL moments as well. I am definitely looking forward to more stories in this series!
*~~*ARC kindly provided by the author to me in exchange for an honest review *~~*
I'm a huge fan of the Blake Harte Mysteries series and when I heard that Robert Innes has a new book, this time with a cool heroine in the pipeline I was really excited to read it.
Robert Innes knows how to capture the reader and with The Hung Jury is a marvelous example how to mix an amateur investigator with a crime scene, this time a trial, where our heroine, Nicola is one of the jury member. The book gives an interesting insight of how the judicial system is working and what it means to be a jury member.
I liked the combination of the really thrilling crime case with Nicola's main job, working in a café for her best friend, where she meets her "partner in crime" Alex, and with a bit persuasion she gets him to help her. I'm really curious what we can expect from the dynamic duo who isn't shy in arguing with each other and being pretty honest. There is definitely a unique chemistry. :3
The camaraderie between Nicola, her best friend and the rest of the café staff is the foundation for good natured mocking and funny scenes. :)
With the first book in this new series Robert Innes wrote again an amazing book with a really thrilling crime case, a unique way of investigating and a truly surprising outcome. 5 out of 5 stars for it.
I’m a big fan of this author and love his Blake Harte series so I was really excited about this new one, especially after reading the blurb. I’ll definitely check out the second book but I was not a fan of Nicola in this story.
I really enjoyed this story line, it grabbed me right from the start and am really looking forward to reading more from Robert Innes!
This was a quick read but I still felt like it was well developed and thought out! Nicole is definitely a bit out there, but I can see what she's trying to do. Add in somewhat grumpy Alex and yeah, color me intrigued. There is a lot of action packed into this story and I'm very curious to see where it all goes. Definitely a great start to a new series!
This was a pretty good cozy mystery. Some parts were quite predictable, but I did enjoy the case a lot. The characters felt a bit stereotypical to me, though.
I enjoyed reading something different from Robert Inned and liked the characters from this new series. My only issue was some of the bad editing on some spellings etc but the writing itself was great as always and the story had a good outcome, just needed some more fear thrown in with regards to confrontation of the jury killer. Regardless, another enjoyable light read.
The mystery in this novella was good, but severely dragged down by the protagonist that was the vehicle for the story. I did not enjoy Nicola as a character and worse she was a pretty bad investigator, despite the fact that is what she is trying to do.
When everything goes down in the court case it really does feel like something has been missed. The odd statement of alibi being so see-through, the attacks of the prosecutor for non relevant facts, the open and shut case that the whole jury saw it as from the start. It really did feel like there needed to be further investigation and I was curious to where it would go. But instead Nicola runs around as the most incompetent 'investigator' with no experience and absolutely no tact. Honestly, so didn't do any actual research in this entire book, mostly just accused random people and asked asinine questions to the family. Alex had the keen mind and the further questions that actually went somewhere. When it came down to it Alex is also the one who actually solved the thing. Nicola is more this vehicle of chaos, one I didn't particularly enjoy. The twists of the case (and the tragedy revealed) felt lost in this woman's path as well as the ridiculous love interest setup at the end. Not a series I will be pursuing.
Nice little cosy mystery, with a fairly open and shut court case throwing up more questions after the verdict than before. Nosy jury member Nicole gets stuck into proving the accused was innocent after all. She was a bit daft, a bit silly, a bit TSTL and a bit everyone (lunch down her top, loud after the booze!). The rest of the restaurant crew are dragged into her schemes, especially Alex. As the death rate among jury members rises, she cracks on investigating!! Whilst the jury murderer was from an obvious source (just which person) the truth behind Simon’s life wasn’t clear to me til the end.
It was...an ok book. Once the actual woman with whom Simon had had an affair with is discovered, everything is crystal clear. Figuring out the person who kills 2 jury members, the prosecution and attacks 2 other jury members was a piece of cake. The chemistry bewteen Gary and Nicola is almost non-existing, while the Gold and Silver duo *might* start fireworks.

You need to stick to your other series. This was weak in plot and characters.. Not much of a mystery, sorry. I'm waiting for #9 on your other series, which is excellent.
I enjoyed it. A British murder mystery that starts out with a trial and ends with murder. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys short novellas.
