Celtic Legends #3

Magic of Winter

Rate this book
Just as a hard winter offers the promise of renewal in the spring, the MAGIC OF WINTER is a beautiful reminder that letting go of the past can allow the future to bloom its brightest. Award-winning author Martina Boone spins a heartwarming modern love story about loss and hope, fathers and daughters, fierce women and men men in kilts, small towns and big ambitions.

Cait Fletcher was always second-string in her father's eyes, unable to compete with her perfect older brother. Her father's view of Cait only deteriorated further when she fell for the local "bad boy" at the age of nine, and her belief in Brice MacLaren never once wavered until the day he betrayed her a few months before their wedding. With their tiny glen too full of opinionated neighbors, wandering sheep, ancient grudges, and countless old traditions to let her escape either her past or her mistakes. She moved away--but then her father's unexpected illness brings her back.

Home again, Cait still loves the village of Balwhither as much as she hates it, and she despises the fact that life in the village makes avoiding Brice impossible. But when she discovers that her father has given up not only on the family-run Library and Tea Room but also on treatment for his cancer, she must put her own emotions and hurts aside. Brice claims he's changed, and he's certainly been good to her father since she left. Now can they find a way to work together as she follows the example of countless unsung heroes--the women of the Highlands--and fights to save the family business and give her father something meaningful to live for?

A warm, timeless story of love, redemption, and magical traditions that will charm new readers and fans of the Celtic Legends Collection alike. Perfect for those who love Nora Roberts, Susan Mallery, Susan Wiggs, Sarah Addison Allen, Lauren K. Denton, and Kathryn Hughes.

While I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first two in the series it was still a fun read. I just didn’t feel for the characters as much, they were less memorable to me for a reason I can’t quite pinpoint. It was still a good story and made for a quick fun read so I definitely can’t complain!

Such a lovely heartwarming story! Love the Celtic Legends series! Full review to come.

It felt so good to be back in Balwhither Glen… like having that wonderful feeling of coming home from a very long vacation and being comforted by everything that makes you happy. “Home is where the heart is,” and that’s how I feel whenever I read Boone’s stories.

“But that was the point of first love — trial and error, and learning to navigate the hardest and best and most important relationships of your life. “

Lake of Destiny is definitely still my favorite, but like Bell of Eternity, Magic of Winter had me intrigued until the end. I really love Martina Boone’s writing style and feel so connected with her stories and characters. It’s just so beautifully affecting, heartfelt and absolutely charming. Boone writes with so much passion and care, and it really shows in her novels. Granted, I’ve only read three, but they’re all so fantastic, riveting, and just magical. But hey, don’t take my word for it, just experience it for yourself and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

“But here in the glen, the winters are a reminder that, as bleak and dark as life can seem, we’ll get through it. There’s beauty in the worst of things.”

It goes without saying that I absolutely enjoyed the plot which was well-paced, engaging, and filled with heartbreaking and sweet tender moments. The romance was wonderfully slow burn and the swoons were plenty. I loved that even though this book wasn’t focused on the romance, there were still many scenes that melted my heart. The family dynamics were complicated and at times insanely dramatic, but so very interesting. I thought the community in the glen was just adorable. And the characters… they were amusing, realistic and utterly lovable. I honestly want to live in this world and meet all these amazing characters.

“She had loved him for most of her life, but somewhere along the line she had fallen in love with him in a single heartbeat, so quickly that she couldn’t name the moment or reason. Thinking of all the old doubts, the old fears, she realized that not one of them mattered. “

Cait was likable — smart, headstrong, and caring. Brice was such a sweetheart and so irresistibly swoony! I really enjoyed their chemistry and ached along with them throughout their struggles. I also admired everything they were doing for the people they love. But man oh man… the things Brice did for Cait was just so thoughtful, romantic and adorably sweet. I definitely fell hard for him. Actually…if I’m being honest, with these amazing male leads in the Celtic Legends Series, I’m not so sure I can pick a favorite. They’re all swoonworthy in their own charming ways.

“That was the other side of love, a promise that two people made to each other to weather whatever came, day by day and moment by moment. “

With a gorgeous setting, fantastic cast of characters you can’t help but love, intriguing family dynamics, a wee bit of romance to make you swoon, and moments that will make you smile and brighten your day, Martina Boone has created another beautiful and affecting story about family, friendship, second chances, hope and love. If Lake of Destiny filled my heart with so much happy, and Bell of Destiny left me positively satisfied, well…Magic of Winter lifted my spirits and inspired me to focus on the good and beautiful parts of life. So, when you think everything seems to be going wrong, just have faith cause there might just be a surprise waiting for you.

“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come.”

I finished reading this book with a smile on my face and a wonderful feeling in my heart. On to the next book – Echo of Glory.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and warm fuzzies are my own.

If you haven't read the other 2 books of this series, you do not have to, but it helps when the other characters come for a visit. Espcecially "Shame" the golden retriever :-) This is another wonderful book, full of love and suspense in the Highlands of Scotland. A riveting tale of love lost due to mistakes and misunderstandings. How can a relationship be salvaged when so much growth and change is needed? How do you get through to a stubborn Scotsman who refuses help? I think one of the best features of all these books to date, are the little poems at the start of each chapter, they are so fitting for each situation that will arise in the chapter. Such a brilliant Author, and I look forward to reading many more books in the future. Grab your copy today and get started, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Another wonderful tale!

Cait and Brice always felt destined to be together. But the death of her mother and seeing another woman leave Brice's cottage wearing his shirt sent her running away to London. Fifteen months later she returns for Christmas with her father after he made excuses for bailing on plans to go to London to be with her. What she finds is a sick, bitter angry man who should rather give up on life than face it without his wife. But the story is in the town, the old friends and the way they come together to help their friends out their life back together. And just what did the Lake of Destiny reveal and to whom?

Miracles happen

This story was not only about a couple who needed to find their way back to each other but also about troubled relationships and how they had affected the lives of many of the people in this beautifully written story of love, forgiveness, and learning about each other.

A lovely story in this Celtic Legends series. Brice and Cait are great characters who overcome misunderstanding and find a second chance at making their relationship work. I enjoyed the description of the tree lighting ceremony on Christmas Eve and the mention, from Brice, of his decision to attend the Beltane festival as mentioned in the first book. The most interesting part, apart from the main characters’ journey, was the final tradition of Hogmanay. It was a beautiful description and make me feel really good after reading it. Thank you Martina, for finding these legends and blending them into worthwhile stories.

The third book in the Celtic Legends collection does not disappoint. Martina Boone has painted a setting and cast of characters that draw you in from the first page. Reading Cait and Brice’s love story made me fall in love with them as much as her other leading characters, who all made appearances in this book. This book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, as I cried along with Cait who was coming to terms with the losses she has suffered. The subplot was marvelous as well, and I wish the Tea Room was a real place, as its tributes need to be a reminder to us today. Such a fantastic read!

A fabulous addition to the series. When Cait comes home for the holidays, she has to face her ex-fiance. Not easy when she believes he betrayed her. But things aren't always what they seem. This is a wonderful romance filled with complicated characters who are grieving their loved ones. Martina does an outstanding job of taking readers to Scotland - you'll smell it, see it, taste it, and most of all, you'll want to go visit!

I highly recommend this entire series.

Cait returned home from London to spend the holidays with her father and discovers all the secrets he's been keeping from her. Cait, her father, and Brice her ex-fiancee are all broken in some way. Her father broken his leg from cancer, still mourns his wife and son, and has lost his will to live. Cait ran away to London because she was afraid of her future with Brice. Brice grew up with an abusive alcoholic father and was a troubled teen and adult. Will Cait stay and make her father fight and give Brice another chance and change her destiny? I loved hearing more about the colorful characters from the first two books, the history and about the women of the glenn. It makes me want to schedule a trip there to look into the lake and find my destiny.

"There’s more than enough places in the Highlands dedicated to glorifying men in kilts. I’ll make the Library and Tea Room a monument to Scottish women. It’s about time someone remembered who did the real hard work while the men were off raiding cattle or playing war."

That quote is why I love this series so much. Finally focusing on something besides men in kilts and actually focuses on the women and kids and the history of Scotland.

The third book in the Celtic Legends series (I have only read BELL OF ETERNITY the second book) and I am very happy to say that they can all be read as a stand-alone, but side characters are also mentioned from the other stories.

After having already lost her mother and then going to her fiancee's Brice's house and seeing a woman leaving wearing his clothes she runs off to London and hasn't been back to the town since. With her father trying to keep her from coming home and not telling her the full story of things she decides to surprise him and comes home early for Christmas. Things aren't good at all her father is sick and has kept it from her and most of the town and has become a shut-in besides having Brice help him when needed. On top of that, her mother's beloved tea room and Library has closed and her father sold everything and is planning to sell the building as well. Cait is heartbroken and upset and wants to help, but isn't sure how because of how stubborn her father is. Brice helps as much as he can, and is also trying to prove to her that he has changed and is willing to do anything to get her back.

"It should have been different. She should have been different. The realization that nothing had changed, that she hadn’t changed, left her chilled."

Overall I really enjoyed this Christmas book. Cait is a little lost even though she has become a journalist in London and loves the work she does. She still hasn't truly dealt with the loss of her mom and with her dad encouraging her to stay away she hasn't returned home since and she hasn't talked to anyone else from home either. The amount of heartbreaking surprises waiting for her at home is a lot to deal with and she doesn't know exactly where to start, but she knows she must stay and bring back her mom's legacy, and help her dad get better again. With some help from the people in the town and Brice, she was able to start doing just that.
As for the love story part, I liked how things just didn't immediately get physical and how willing Brice was to show they he had changed and that he wasn't just going to let things go back to how they were. He truly cares for Cait, and Cait truly cares about him she just has some trust issues they are going to have to work through.
I also found it fascinating how until 1958 Scotland didn't celebrate Christmas and it was actually banned up to that point.
I can't wait to see who we follow next in this series!

"Family was what Christmas was for, arguments and gifts and memories that all had meaning only because there was so much history and love behind them."

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Lake of Destiny #1 - This story has it all: romance, intrigue, traditions and excitement. Although this book has 338 pages, the pages just flew by as the story progressed. A well written, intriguing suspense with a surprise revealed at the end. The plot is well thought out and the characters are believable and realistic. Not all is sugar and spice, there are some rotten apples in the bunch. The descriptions are so well done the reader experiences everything and easily visualizes the area the story is set. This is my first book by the author and I will happily read anything else she writes. I received this book through the APX website. 5*

Bell of Eternity #2 - After reading Lake of Destiny, I was hooked on this author and had to read more of her books. I contacted the author to review anything she had available. This is a well written, intriguing romance with interesting background material to make the story flow along, while being a substantial read. The interesting characters draw the reader into the story with their actions, reactions and believable dialog. The plot has a twist and turn, also, keeping the reader immersed in the story, along with the author's gift for descriptions. I've always loved books about the Cornwall area, fiction and nonfiction, and this book is among the best of them. It was interesting to learn of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the history behind the volunteers. 5*

Magic of Winter #3 - Another well written, intriguing romance set the Cornwall area with our favorite and not so favorite characters. A second chance at love fraught with problems, both with the romance and a dying father. The characters are well thought out with realistic dialog and a willingness to communicate. The descriptions by the author are vivid and the plot is interesting and both help keep the reader immersed in the pages. I've read all three books and while this one isn't my favorite (it is good), all three were well done and the author is an interesting storyteller. Reading all three in order just makes a continuing story, but they can be read in any order, but why? 5*

Echo of Glory #4 - This story fits well into the series. Complete with history, romance and intrigue. Well written, lovable characters with realistic dialog and a storyline that holds the reader's attention until the end. Ms. Boone does a great job with her vivid descriptions and the history of the people and times are always an added bonus that strengthens and adds substance to the story.

What a wonderful, heart-warming and romantic book! It is part of a series but can definitely stand alone. I actually didn't realize that I'd somehow missed reading Bells of Eternity and so am really excited to be able to read another book of hers in this series!

I had read Lake of Destiny, the first in this series, and found it wonderfully romantic. This one is a tad less fairy-tale-esque and is more gritty. It deals with deaths of first Cait's brother, then her mother. Cait has run off to live in London. Her father's and her relationship seems to thrive over the phone and Cait is thrilled to finally have the father-daughter relationship she craved for all of her growing up years.

But when she comes home, against her father's will, for Christmas, she finds herself facing the reality her father had been hiding from her; he has been preparing to put her mothers lending library and tea room up for sale and his own withdrawal from life because of a diagnosis of cancer and his refusal to be treated. On top of all that, she has to face her ex-fiancé and find that he's been the one keeping her father alive. Brice wants her back and wants a chance to explain what happened the night she broke up with him, but she's as stubborn as her father and refuses to allow him any closer than is absolutely necessary.

Romantic tension and family tensions are a big part of this book. The wonderful part is watching Cait as she stubbornly works herself into her mother's shoes and slowly, but surely, finds the peace she had never found when she ran away to London.

Both she and Brice have changed because she ran off and it was needful change for their relationship to thrive. The HEA is all the more satisfying because she and Brice both work so hard for it.

Martina Boone is a talented writer who has you caring deeply about her characters, flaws and all.

I received this copy from the author for my honest review and I have not let that fact influence my opinion.

Cait Fletcher and Brice MacLaren had been sweethearts for years and planned to marry until Brice betrayed Cait's trust. She broke the engagement and left town and had not returned for almost two years. She never allowed Brice the chance to explain. Now her father needed her and she had returned to their little village where everyone knew everyone's business and had an opinion to share. She found that her father's health was failing and she didn't know how to help him. In addition, she discovered that Brice had been there to help her father the entire time she was gone. Why had her father not told her of his illness and how seriously ill he was? Why had he allowed Brice to help him but now included her?

Brice had never stopped loving Cait and hoping for her return. He had changed in the time she was gone and matured and saw a future for them if she would allow it. Cait began to find what she was looking for when she returned to her roots and took pleasure in the things that used to annoy her and made her want to leave this quaint life. But would she be able to deal with all of the loss she had experienced and his betrayal or would it be too much for her to bear? Were they fated to be together forever or was their relationship one of young love that burned out when the realities of adult life set in?

This was a sweet romance with no foul language or descriptive sex scenes. There was true courtship and friendship and a mature kind of love between former sweethearts. There was a real community with friends who sincerely wanted to help and there for each other in times of need.

I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I've read Lake of Destiny and Bell of Eternity, so when I saw Magic in Winter, I knew I had to read it. Martina is amazing...making her characters come to life and become real, flawed, but able to overcome their obstacles and grow into themselves. This book, which had familiar villagers in it, is a stand alone book, as are the others in this series. It is nice to see some of the same people and watch the continuation of their lives as well as finding out more about the main characters in each specific book.
Magic of Winter touched a very special place in my heart. It's about love, loss, and finding who we are deep inside that allows us to find joy again. I hope, if you're reading this and wondering if you should read this book as well, that you'll invest a bit of time and get to know these beautiful people (characters) and watch their lives unfold. The stories aren't always pretty, but whose life is. Without the low points in our lives, how would we be able to enjoy the high points as much?
Martina Boone's books get better and better. She's become one of my most favorite contemporary authors. And even had I not been given an Advanced Copy of this book to read, I would have bought it all the same, as I have done with the first two in this series. The review I've provided is completely voluntary and if it weren't my honest opinion, it probably wouldn't sound so gushy! I hope you enjoy!

Magic of Winter is the third book in the Celtic Legends series by Martina Boone and if you are looking for a story that centers around family and second chance romance, you should consider this book. While this is the third book of the series, I don’t think you have to read the first two, but it is definitely a good idea as some characters from the previous books make appearances.

The main characters in this story are Cait and Brice. They were high school sweethearts and engaged but both of them were struggling with figuring out who they were and what they wanted out of life. After the death of her mother and brother, Cait sees something that pushes her to run away to London – away from Brice as well as her father. When Christmas rolls around and her father refuses to come to London, Cait makes the decision to go back home and that is when things start to be revealed.

Cait immediately realizes her father has been keeping some pretty big secrets from her. He has essentially packed away or gotten rid of every trace of her mother and is in the process of selling the Library and Tea Room she built and loved. Not only was this important to Cait but it has been an important part of the village of Balwhither and Cait is unwilling to let it go. Add to this the fact that her father has found out he has cancer and has basically given up trying to fight it and Cait decides she needs to stay and do what she can on both fronts.

Before I go into this story any further, I have to say, I loved how Boone decided to write about such a challenging relationship between a father and a daughter. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for her when she gets home and continually hits a wall with her father. He is stubborn and sad, and it seems like no matter what Cait does, she can’t win with him.

Of course, there is the romance part of the story. I love a second chance romance and while I had no idea what it was that sent Cait running, it was clear Brice was going to have to prove himself in order to win her trust back. From the start of the book it is obvious that they both still have feelings for each other and as Brice slowly proves that he has really changed, Cait realizes they both had some growing up to do.

This was a pretty quick read (as are all the books in this series) and the romance is slowly built up despite the fact that these two characters have a past. As in the other books, Boone does a fantastic job of setting up the surroundings these characters live in and tying in the local traditions. If you are looking for a light romance set in the Highlands of Scotland, definitely consider checking not only this book out, but also the other books of the series.

Thank you to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Cait Feltcher was always second string in her father's eyes, never able to beat her perfect older brother. Her father's view of her fell even further when she fell in love with the "local bad boy" when she was nine. Her love for Brice MacLaren never wavered until he betrayed her a few months before their wedding. But their Glen in the Scottish highlands holds no place for her to escape her past. She moved away, until her father's unexpected illness causes her to come back.

Being back home, she hates how Brice still affects her heart. She discovers her father gave up their library and tea room as well as his cancer treatments and she must put her feelings aside. Brice claims he's a changed man and he's been good to her father. But can she trust him enough to work with him?

First of all, Martina Boone is one of my all time favorite authors and I love the Celtic Legends series! She really describes the highlands to make you feel like you're actually there. I seriously cannot rave about these books enough!

This series will forever be one of my favorites, and this book was soooo sweet! I am officially in love with Brice 😍

I've read the other two novels in this collection and once again, I fell in love with the characters as well as the setting. Martina gives her readers well-rounded characters in this book that made me feel their happiness, their sadness, their doubts and pain. Told in alternating points of view (which I've come to love in romance books), we get to know each character's thoughts and feelings and motivations. We get to feel the internal struggles of past hurt and misunderstandings and lies.

If you love swoony romance with bits of suspense, read this book to find out how two imperfect people who knowingly make mistakes, learn to recognize perfection in themselves and their relationships doesn't mean being perfect, it just means being true to yourself and your loved ones. If you enjoy secrets and family relationships in your books, then you will enjoy your time between the pages of this novel.

The author provided me with a kindle copy for an honest review. I look forward to more books like this from Martina.

This is the perfect continuation piece for the Celtic Legends Collection. The same, familiar cast of characters from earlier books is utilized. The character development of this piece is fantastic. The story line has a few twists and turns along the way, but it remains coherent and fun.

Coming home, the last thing she expected to do this Christmas. But, when her father flakes out on coming to the city for Christmas, she knows it is time to go home. Upon arriving at home, she learns that life is not the pleasant picture her father had been conveying to her over the phone. His ankle was broken, not just twisted like he said. The family business, started by her mother, has been closed. Then she learns that her father actually has bone cancer. One strike after another, until decisions must be made.

I adored MAGIC OF WINTER, and the entire Celtic Legends Collection of literary fiction. This is a magical story of love, forgiveness, and redemption, perfect for fans of Nora Roberts and Susanna Kearsley. When heartbroken Cait returns home to Scotland for Christmas, she must face the past she ran away from, come to terms with her mother's death and her father's illness, and confront her former fiance, Brice, the only man she's ever loved.

In Magic of Winter, readers return to Balwhither village, rich with history and folklore, and are reunited with beloved characters from Lake of Destiny and Belle of Eternity. I highly recommend this heartwarming story!

Magic of Winter is a charming and endearing Christmas story set in beautiful Scotland. A great story with extremely likeable characters. I kept wanting to go back for more. It had plenty of elements that make it a warm holiday take-family troubles, relationship misunderstandings, loss, coming home again and a sweetness to finish it off. I loved it! A great read around the holidays. Cozy up in a nice chair with a blanket and enjoy!

Damn I enjoyed this book!

I am not a romance novel reader! My taste generally goes to SF or fantacy this book sucked me right in and kept me reading. I was intensely impressed by the breath of sources for each chapter's opening quote. The author must have been saving these nuggets of English beauty all her life. Thank you Ms. Boone for a wonderful read!

This is the middle book in a group of books but definitely stands alone. It is a story of a couple, of a family, of loss, a village/community interconnected, forgiveness and overcoming. Beautifully written. It goes through the uneasy process of going through the grief of loss and remembering to celebrate the lives of those who left us and to carry on. I enjoyed reading it.
