AHHHH you guys! I love this. She switches places with her twin brother and he attends her all girls school while she attends his all boys school for delinquents. If you've followed my reviews at all you know I love me a good woman disguised as a man story, and this one is great! You've got your childhood friend/sweetheart who knows her true identity, your best friend who doesn't know she's actually a girl but is weirdly attracted to her anyway, your last minute swaps with her twin to prove she's actually a boy to the people who start to suspect she's a girl... This manga has it all! I love how strong Hinako is, and how loyal and determined to protect those weaker than her she is. I want to be her bestest best friend. :) I also really love the art style in this manga. Now gimme then next one RIGHT NOW!!

*I received a free copy of this book from Edelweiss+ and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This manga was an absolute hoot!!

I didn't expect it to be such a wild adventure, but it was a lot of fun! Though I confess I was pretty nervous about the gender swapping because I dislike when characters have to lie to hide their identity in this kind of way. However, I wanted to try this series to see how I would feel because there is a digital manga with strong volleyball scenes that I REALLY want to try and like Hinako, the main character of that story switches places with her brother and has to dress and disguise herself as her male twin.

Ramble aside, I was really pleasantly surprised with Kenka Bancho and found myself really enjoying Hinako's story! Granted, I second the mangaka that if I were to ever be in her world, I would stay in the nurse's office all day! LOL! I can't fight worth nothing, which is why I definitely admired Hinako's strength and determination. She is an amazing character and looking forward to seeing how the second volume unfolds! (Plus it's cool seeing her beat up other guys! LOL!)

However, my favorite part is the whole cast of characters! Oh my goodness, they are all amazing!!! It was hard to choose a favorite, but I think Totomaru is my favorite because he is SOOOOO adorable!! His little blush is SO cute! I love his interactions with Hinako and how he really is such a great friend. I also liked Konparu too and enjoyed seeing them all together as the manga goes on. Kira is sweet and also really liked Mirako since he knows and calls out things that cause great humor to unfold. LOL!

I will say that I am hands down here for the romance! It's subtle, but I love love love it! I'm hoping this series has a happy ending because I'll be upset if doesn't! LOL!

Overall, this was a really fun read! I thought one character was a creep, but everyone else I really liked and had a great time reading this! I also understand why otome games are so popular because this one would be such a fun one to play! LOL!

This is way different than the manga I've been reading lately, and it's such a breath of fresh air.

Hinako discovers that she not only has an identical twin, but that her twin is the future head of a Yakuza family. She then has to switch places with him and go to his school of delinquents to fight (because she's pretty bad ass) to become the "boss" in his place (because he hates fighting and seems to be enjoying his life as a girl at her school).

Going in, I thought this would be like So Cute It Hurts!!, but it's not. For one thing, Hinako fights and fights hard. Much of this book cycles between comedy, slapstick comedy, and semi-serious battles, and I kind of dig it.

It's pretty straightforward, and the characters are pretty simple without too much depth to them, but as this is a slapstick rom com based on an otome dating sim, the sexy trope guys and a well-defined female MC as far as dating sims go works pretty well. It's also nice that this series seems to be going straight for one guy rather than spinning its wheels having a romance arc with each character before going for the "true ending," which is also a nice change of pace for otome adaptations.

Kenka Bancho Otome is simple, silly, and a fun read all things considered.

This manga plays with a crossdressing trope, and I love those kind of stories. This one is a really fun, short manga, and I really enjoyed my read of it. I can see it's appeal for sure! If this sounds interesting to you at all, I recommend giving it a read! It is only 2 volumes after all.

The plot of this one can loosely be explained as 'She's the Man' in a high school for delinquents setting. Hinako, who has always known herself to be an orphan, is on her way to the first day of high school, when her twin brother Hiraku pops out of nowhere, makes her go in his place to his boys-only high school, Shishiku, which is famous for having kids of mob bosses. Hinako, being a fighter herself, is apt for the role, but keeping her secret while also trying to rise to the top of the school (in fighting, not studying) is going to prove a challenge.

Besides the comedy situations, this story doesn't have much to offer, in my opinion. Sure, there is a boy harem developing, but it seems very generic in terms of characters. I would be more interested if it would have some background to why Hinako was abandoned (even if it is a comedy manga) and what Hiraku's family is like. Speaking of Hiraku, I wish it would come out and be upfront that the character is a trans girl, instead of just pushing it into 'just a boy who loves to cross-dress' thing we see too often. Even the gay panic of Totomaru - who much prefers boy-Hinako than girl-Hiraku. I did like that senior Mirako - who straight up is a pansexual icon. Though, ultimately, maybe I am expecting too much of a light-hearted comedy manga.

This is pretty funny!

I really enjoyed the story. I found a lot of it to be really hilarious, the rest to be sorta random but still enjoyable!

The concept of the story is introduced pretty fast and quickly in the beginning so I'll gloss over that real fast. Our main character sees a boy get hit in the street, runs over to see if he's ok. Ends up being someone who looks identical to the MC. The boy tells MC that he absolutely cannot miss his entrance ceremony so he sends MC, dressed up as a boy. MC finds out that the school she is attending in disguise is one for male delinquents and you have to physically fight your way up the ranks.

Some of the characters were honestly meh. I didn't care about them. But some of the others were really great. I hate one guy soooo much. He acts so creepy!!! I know it's explained away but I still don't like him. Totomaru Minowa is my fav probably bc of the bandanna and bc of his reactions to the MC.

The overall art was pretty decent. Not my favorite but close to it!! The faces all were well proportioned (except for the too large eyes in a few characters but whatever).

The story seems really dark and shady (I suppose it is) but is explained and is pretty funny. It's mostly a big misunderstanding in some scenes.

The anime wasn't very good, but the manga is much better. The anime left out a lot of details, so I highly suggest reading the manga instead. I think that the gender bender plot is interesting and I'm kind of interested in seeing where the story goes.

Hinako is looking forward to high school. She grew up in an orphanage, constantly harassed by bullies until she learned to fight back, only to get a reputation as a violent tomboy. Ever since, the rumors about her fighting skills have kept her from having any friends. But now she’s going into an elegant girls-only academy, where Hinako will finally be able to be feminine and have friendships with other girls.

Wrong! On her way to the entrance ceremony, she’s accosted by a boy who looks almost exactly like her, and dragooned into wearing his uniform and going to Shishiku, a boys’ school for rampaging delinquents! The school is essentially a fighting tournament to discover the toughest young hoods to rule the school, and Hinako’s new identity of Hikaru turns out to be a huge target painted on her back. Fight time!

This manga (the title translates roughly as “Violent Delinquent Maiden”) is based on an otome-genre “visual novel.” For those unfamiliar with the terms, a visual novel is a computer/video game that’s like a Find Your Own Adventure book–most of the gameplay consists of making choices and following different paths through the story. The otome genre involves a young woman placed in an unusual situation and given the choice of several attractive young men to romance.

It turns out that Hikaru is Hinako’s long-lost twin brother, the son of a Yakuza (Japanese mobsters) boss. In order to inherit leadership of the clan, he must attend Shishiku. The problem is that he’s a total wimp with no fighting skills. Hikaru’s also self-centered enough not to just ditch the wealth and prestige that comes with the position. So when he found out Hinako was alive, he came up with the switch idea. (In exchange, he attends the all-girl school disguised as Hinako, which he apparently enjoys.)

At Shishiku, Hinako promptly starts busting faces and making friends. Turns out some of these delinquents are amazingly good looking, especially the mysterious Rintaro Kira, who turns out to have a surprise connection to Hinako’s past.

Hinako starts having feelings for some of the boys, but romance is going to be a bit difficult while she’s pretending to be Hikaru.

The storyline has some similarities to So Cute It Hurts!! which I reviewed a while back, but isn’t as engaging. The brother in that one was a bit of a jerk but also had good qualities he showed often, and the plot was balanced. In this story, Hikaru shows no redeeming qualities as of yet, and functions more as a plot device.

The character art is okay, but backgrounds are almost non-existent.

Content notes: bullying, frequent but non-gory violence.

Mostly for fans of the visual novel, but should also appeal to fans of girls disguised as boys and kicking butt.

I watched the anime when it was new and enjoyed some of the episodes but was disappointed that no one except one of the boys knew that the main character was actually a girl. I wish that the other boys slowly found out she’s a girl, kind of like Ouran High School Host Club, it would have been fun to see how all of their interactions would be like. Would it be the same, awkward at first but accepting later? Would one of them not be able to deal with it? I NEED answers! Considering that there are only 2 volumes in this series and I flipped to the last chapter, it doesn’t seem like anyone finds out in the manga either, very disappointing. Hopefully the otome games have actual endings where the guys find out and hopefully people who played them post playthroughs on youtube🙏🏽

I’ve always loved Totomaru, he’s so sweet and loyal, plus I’m a sucker for a guy wearing a bandana or headband. I also still like the other guys but I’.m still not sure about the idol guy🤔

I don’t like Hikaru and he doesn’t have much of a personality here (the mangaka says she’s loves him but I don’t get it). Whereas with our main character Hinako, she definitely started out very bland as well and felt like someone who just goes along with whatever’s going on even if she hates it, like come on girl! Grow a back bone! Just because you can fight doesn’t make you strong if you’re weak mentally. She lets this stranger who said he’s her twin brother dress her in the boys uniform and makes her go to his school. At the time she didn’t even know he was the heir of a yakuza boss, so why let him do this to you? Just because you bumped into him and he claimed to have broken his arm doesn’t mean you owe him anything! If she had interesting personality that went along with her fighting strength instead of being such a pushover, I would have actually liked her! But we got to have her go to the all boys school otherwise there would be no plot.

Today’s post is on Kenka Bancho Otome: Love's Battle Royale, Vol. 1 by Chie Shimada. It is 200 pages long and published in Shojo Beat. The cover has three of the main characters on it. The intended reader is someone who likes over the top comedy and shojo manga. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character Hinako. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Beautiful boy rebels using their fists to fall in love!

Hinako thought she didn't have any family, but on the day she starts high school, her twin brother Hikaru suddenly appears and tricks her into taking his place. But the new school Hinako attends in his stead is beyond unusual. Now she must fight her way to the top of Shishiku Academy, an all-boys school of delinquents!

Review- A funny but mildly annoying manga that I am not sure about. Hinako was abandoned by her family for unknown reasons. In fact she doesn’t know that she has any family until her twin brother kidnaps her and forces to pretend to be him in his all boys school which is basically Fight Club. So Hinako does this for some reason that I don’t understand. All she has to do is just tell the principal but is never seen and she can go back to her normal life. But then we would not have the manga or the game that this manga is based off of. It is only two volumes long so maybe I’ll like the second volume more but I don’t have much hope.

I give this manga a Three out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Fun Gender Bending Manga

Apparently this is based on a video game? I've never played it, so I can't say how good it is as an adaptation. However, it's a pretty funny manga.

The main character finds herself stuck going to an all boy's school for delinquents, having to fight her way to the top without revealing that she's a girl. I really liked her and her friends, and I'm rooting for her.

I reallllllly hated her twin, though, and there's no real explanation why he was raised with his family and she wasn't. Maybe that'll come up in volume two; I hope so. Let's just say that with his personality, he should have been abandoned. He basically knocks a star off the rating.

Garbage family aside, I really enjoyed the manga. The art is cute, I'm invested in the story, and I like most of the characters. I'd totally recommend it if you're at all curious.

I guess this would probably be more enjoyable if I'd played the game it was based on. The pacing was weird, there was a lot of insta-love/insta-friendship going on and it was definitely just a basic intro to the potential love interests. The backsstory was only mentioned briefly, and was confusing BUT, otome games are always out there AND I did like Hinako and a couple of the guys (I'm otome game trash) so I would probably continue reading just to see where it goes and what they do with the romance angle!

Volume Review: 3/5
I took this out from the library a couple weeks ago and I already forget what it is about. Except some typical girl dresses as guy and guy thinks (s)he's cute and is confused. Also I believe I really liked the black-haired guy. I should probably reread this before writing a review ... Whoops.
I'll continue reading this series ... from the library

Loved it! This was hilarious, adorable and so much fun! It kills me that it's only two volumes. This is the type of series that I cannot get enough of because the author leaned into the comedy aspect of the plot instead of taking it too seriously. It also really makes me want to play the game, but alas it is only on the PlayStation Vita.

Watched the super short anime episodes of this last year and thought it was cute though underdeveloped. The manga follows the same lines, but hopefully there will be more of a conclusion with the 2nd and last volume.

A cute story! Based on a dating sim, and it does show - there's a lack of backstory and really getting to know the characters. Good for people who like genderbending or crossdressing stories, I guess.

This was cute. I like the characters and the artwork. The story is cute, that being said it is a little predictable and common plot to put a girl in a boy's school in place of her sibling. Mixed feelings about continuing the series.

I love it! It’s so cute and funny!! She switches with her twin brother, that she just found out about, and goes to a delinquent H.S. Turns out she fits in more there than she ever did with the girls from middle and junior high.
