एंड्रयू कार्नेगी कार्य-कुशलता से अटूट प्यार करता था। जब से कार्नेगी ने इस्पात उद्योग में कदम रखा था; तभी से अपने कारखानों को तकनीकी रूप से उन्नत बनाने की कोशिशें शुरू कर दी थीं। यही कारण था कि जल्द ही कार्नेगी स्टील समूचे इस्पात उद्योग के लिए उदहारण बन गई थी। रॉकफेलर की तरह कार्नेगी में भी उचित अवसर को परखने और जोखिम आकलन की अलौकिक क्षमता थी। तभी तो वह बाजार मंदियों के दौरान बीमार इस्पात कारखानों को खरीदने का सिलसिला जारी रखे हुए था और उन्हें अपनी प्रबंधन कुशलता से लाभकारी इकाइयों में बदल पाने में सक्षम हुआ था। जी हाँ; 19वीं सदी के अंत में एंड्रयू कार्नेगी 70 प्रतिशत अमेरिकी इस्पात उद्योग को नियंत्रित करने लगा था। अभी इस्पात उद्योग में कदम रखे उसे ढाई दशक ही हुए थे।
