How do you continue to get up in the morning when you can’t to look at yourself in the mirror?
Having returned to Seattle, Ethan Ellison would say that he’s trying to piece his life back together but who is he kidding? There’s no returning to life as he knew it, not after Ali’s revelation about their parentage. Now, Ethan’s haunted by personal ghosts and plagued by increasingly temperamental magic.
For Patrick Clanahan, returning to work should be easier than dealing with a mate who can’t stand his touch. But there’s nothing easy about a series of murders that all point to vampire activity in a city where there are no vampires. It’s bringing back to mind the murder of his last partner, slain by vampires a year before he met Ethan—as though Pat didn’t have enough to worry about.
Return to the world of Blood & Bone’s alternative supernatural Seattle, where Ethan and Patrick are about to face their darkest inner demons and scratch the lid on a cover-up bigger than either of them.
This novel picks up after the events of the original trilogy as well as Medium Rare (The Profane Series #1) and Vapor Trail (The Profane Series #2).
DONE! I believe I am also done with this series. There were so many wrong words -- "...like a live wire libel to burn up..." at 40% just about sent me over the edge, foaming at the mouth. The story tied up at least a couple hanging mysteries, but there are obviously more to be resolved in the next installment of this "trilogy." I was VERY glad to see Ethan pull his head out of his ass and stop being a fucking asshole to Patrick, but I don't think it's going to be enough for me. I'll miss Vector and Lachlan more than Ethan and Patrick, and I'll miss Sabira and Grace the most. Sigh. Please, for the love of GOD, find a better editor!!!
I saw that there was only 4 books to this series - frustrated with the last 3, thinking I was going to get over being frustrated with this series and get my happy ending, but no.There is no little sample of book 5 at the end of the story. Hopefully there will be a # 5 with a happy ending.
Jesus Christ, Ethan really made me upset in this book. I was rooting for Pat the whole time and could not sympathize with Ethan at all for some reason. It just felt like he was rehashing the same old arguments about their mating that were supposedly dealt with in book 3! And then they got back together so quickly and without any issues it was almost upsetting. This could have been so much better than the previous books by introducing Adam again, but no we have to end with a cliffhanger pretty much?? Why do that if none of the previous books did that?? I don't even know if there will be another book or not, but this book could have been finished without a cliffhanger literally in two more chapters.... why do you do this to me??!
In general I have liked this series, but I have to say that the first 3/4 of the book was actually painful to read. I started it but then had to put it down. I'm not really sure what Ethan's problem with "mate" is, but his wallowing was difficult to take. He wouldn't talk about it and nobody else would talk to him about it so that is bordered on ridiculous. As the saying goes, "Either shit or get off the pot." (pardon my French). I'm glad it picked the book up again but I'm really glad they've turned a corner on their relationship. Now we'll see what the next book brings.
In this book in the series, we're dealing with the aftermath of the traumatic events that took place in the book before. I really appreciate how this author let her characters be a mess, let them be flawed and make mistakes. It does mean that at times, I was frustrated with these characters or wanted to give them a good smack in the face (lol), but it was very honest, raw, and entirely in character to who they are as people.
And when they finally do sort everything out and start healing from everything that happened, the emotional payoff is worth it.
I strongly suggest reading both books in the companion series (the Profane) before this one in order to get the full emotional impact of seeing the characters from both series interacting in this book.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: drug use, hallucinations, ptsd flashbacks (possibly?), sex and drugs as self-harm, and consent issues (that are discussed in the book and handled well, in my opinion). Possibly others I'm forgetting, as this book deals heavily with recovering from trauma and a character who is an absolute wreck, mental health wise.
