G.I. JOE: Season 3.1

Rate this book
With Serpentor dead, Cobra Commander devolved into a snake, and Cobra's army in ruins, life ought to be easy for the G. I. Joe team. When a venerable member of Cobra turns against the organization and exposes its greatest secrets, the final nail in Cobra's coffin should be all but assured.

So why is G. I. Joe facing a brutal heartbreak? And how has Cobra managed to execute the greatest propaganda victory in its history?

Witness the continuing adventures of Falcon, Jinx, and the rest of the Rawhide crew, along with classic Real American Heroes like Beach Head, Flint, and Lady Jaye. The stakes have never been higher, as the Joe team discovers a revelation from Cobra's past that calls everything they know into question.

Writer Gene Kendall provides a daring, alternate look at what the 1980s could've provided G. I. Joe fans. Action, psychological drama, grizzled heartbreakers, and the most devious Cobra scheme of all. Step back into the past and experience G. I. Joe: Season 3.1...now, with no commercial interruptions!

I'm an avid G. I. Joe. I was so excited to read this and was very appreciative of the fact the author clearly was a fan of the Sunbow cartoon (like me). I had such a treat going back in time to my seven-year-old self. The fan service alone made this a treat. It wasn't perfect (no major battle?), but it was entertaining. I recommend it to an G. I. Joe fans. The rest of my review will contain spoilers.

The Good.
The violence is real. People take shots to the face and die.

Duke died. This story takes place after the movie. The movie was meant to have Duke die, but backlash from Optimus Prime's death in the Transformers movies had Hasbro get a bit spineless. Comas are a thing of head trauma, not having a venomous snake spear tear through your heart. I'm glad the author fixed this ludicrous injury.

Chuckles didn't talk in the movie. Why not? Laryngitis. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best.

The Baroness undercover/double agent status. Just like when Dusty kept us guessing in one of the best episodes of the show.

The notes at the end proving the author is a true fan.

The Bad.
So many important characters were missing. Some had a few notes to explain, but most are just absent. We all have our favorite characters, but some serious omissions took place. Notably absent are Destro, Storm Shadow, Shipwreck, Wild Bill, Lifeline, Gung Ho, Zartan, and Sgt Slaughter. Tunnel Rat is my favorite character (I'm an EOD officer in real life) and a Rawhide, but he barely had any scenes.

There was action, but nothing on a grand scale. This novel was like the five-part series that began each season. They always ended in massive battles. What hurts more is knowing there could have been real casualties with this fight.

No REAL casualties. With the exception of Duke (really from the movie) nobody died but Red Shirts (or should I say BLUE Shirts?). I would have liked realistic combat with consequences for named characters.

The Technical.
This was written third-person omniscient.

It has a "To Be Continued" ending, which may not even happen.

This was a great take on what could have been if Sunbow had continued with the GI Joe license! Gene's writing style really draws the reader in and makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of everything going on.

It was refreshing to see new takes on characters and see a few faces show back up. Overall, a great job and I highly recommend this if you're a fan of the classic GI Joe cartoon, but are looking for something with a little more depth and maturity.
