Moon Broken

Rate this book
Recently freed from a life of violence and slavery, Rukiya Moonborn finds herself in a strange new world full of hope and possibilities, unlike any she’s ever known. But the monsters of her past are about to catch up with her, putting everyone around her in danger.

In her daring escape from chains, Rook left behind a world of chaos, setting the status quo on fire and taking down Reagan Ramsey, the West Coast Pack Master, with her exit. Now, the remaining four Pack Masters are calling for her head, well aware of the threat Rook’s open rebellion has caused.

And when Ryker, Rook’s former lover and the right hand of her oppressor, makes an aggressive attempt at getting her back, Rook must decide where her broken heart lies.

Just as good if not better than the first. The world becomes richer and Rook experiences a fair bit of growth in this one. It picks up right after the first book and makes you not want to put it down til the end, I honestly can't wait for the next one!

I wish this was more of a review but it's more of me ranting...

Ehhh. Ehhhh! And just when I thought thinks were going good. Fine. Dandy in fact. But nope, Moon Broken had to take a weird left turn and spit us into SJMaas territory. Not necessarily a bad thing if done right, except... ehhhh, it wasn't pretty.

So I got really confused about the turn of events. I get that we live in a world of supes, but the whole alternate-universe-slash-parallel-dimensions-communist-town was weird. I loved the first book for the fucked up world Rook lived in, and suddenly everything's all just fine and peachy? It suddenly turned Rook from badass girl to "I like to wear skirts, mope, and frolic around" kind of girl. Which I guess is okay if it had been another life... but was completely out of character.

Then I facepalmed a whole bunch throughout this book. We totally get it. Rook hates Ryker. And you know who he reminds me of? Fucking Tamlin. Trying to win her back, steeping to new levels of creepy, and trying to own his supposed mate. Ew. That's fore sure something to dislike about the guy... except it was hard to get behind some of Rook's animosity simply due to the fact that... she wouldn't listen to him. Like what. Dude's got a reason why he's Head Hound, but Rook kept shutting him down. She was probably as childish as he was and that made me mad because this girl should be beyond stupid shit like that.

And then Adriel has this weird Rhysand vibe going on. You know what I mean? It's the seemingly evil king to his world but utterly selfless leader at heart who commands the loyalty of a few powerful (and how the fuck they all ended up with him) beings of the realm. He saves our poor and desolate heroine because she's a cage bird and give's the power of choice and freedom and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

But with all of that said, this book would have faired worse had it not literally been for Adriel, Goldie, and Kalene. They all get gold stars.

A great followup for the first book that just absolutely knocked my socks off. Rook has changed so much from when we first met her in Moon Burned. And the layers of complexity feel genuine and natural to what she's been through.

Having escaped Marisol and gained freedom and solace in Mina, a sort of inertia and survivor's guilt takes over her for a while. Like, without the constant threat of death and punishment or the sense of survival-desperate strength that comes from helplessness and hopelessness, she seemed adrift and meaningless. There was suddenly no more reason to fight...at all. And it was very believable watching her reach this low point and having to start from scratch in her free and safe life.

At first, I really didn't buy the chemistry with Adriel. I guess I really empathized with Rook's internal prejudice against Mixbreeds and her wariness of males period, to the point where I was looking for the faults, waiting for him to reveal his "true" self the way Ryker had. In the meantime, despite not showing anything other than a certain enigmatic facade, I felt Rook's attraction to him came out of nowhere and felt nothing but a lukewarm compassion from him. That is until the Hounds attacked Mina. Then it starts to come in a bit clearer and I started to really root for them.

Great book and great series. Even with how much Rook is different from that abrasive and cool fighter who couldn't give a shit in the first book, these new developments have kept me engaged along for the ride watching her evolve.

The wolf wars series by H.D Gordon
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite Line: “Too busy blaming the world to notice my own share of the blame”

Well where to start 🤦🏾‍♀️ I devoured these two books in the space of a week! ⏳
Not a typical wolf story, these books are set in a world where every wolf has its place! Masters, Hounds & slaves. We follow Rukiya ‘Rook’ a slave who is referred to as a ‘dog’. Our main protagonist is a prize fighter who is forced to fight for her life in a ring for the entrainment of her masters, hounds and other supernaturals.

Due to a series of unfortunate or fortunate events Rooks life is forever changed. Can she change the status quo of her life or will she be forever doomed to live by the mantra “shift fight survive” ⏳
Without giving too much away, book two starts straight off where book one left off. We watch Rook deal with the aftermath of the events in the previous book. During this book we saw Rook’s personality grow and watched as she tackles her ingrained prejudices and misconceptions. ⏳
I would definitely recommend these books, they are a refreshing take on the wolf genre & I couldn’t put them down. Rook’s kick ass resilient personality had me cheering for her throughout! The love interest in the books were cleverly interwoven that I didn’t feel like they over shadowed the actual story. 😊

Enjoyable

There is something so familiar about this story, the eh and flow of the hero’s journey. It’s been changed and crafted to fit this narrative, but you can still see the glaring path Rook is traveling, the kind of path countless heroes in countless stories have traveled before her. We are not quite at her upswing yet, but we’ve had revelation and determination. Let the War commence.

First person, single POV, Fantasy
Rating = R
Romantic dynamic = M/F
Character age range = 18+

Pros;
- well written
- Well edited
- Rook is learning and growing.
- Goldie and Rook’s friendship, it’s a thing of beauty.
- World building is great

Cons:
- Foreshadowing is a bit heavy handed.
- The twists.... really aren’t. But that’s ok.

Omg omg this book was everything
I was afraid the first one would be a one off and I’d be stuck with some lame-o sophomore effort. Nope!

Rook is the perfect combo of bad ass, wary and a revolutionary. I love that she’s just a straightforward character. The writer doesn’t feel like she needs to give her a prophecy, a bunch of crazy undiscovered powers and put the world on her shoulders. She’s an ex slave and a great fighter but so far that’s it. And she has female friends! Mind blown 🤯

And not to spoil anything but there are boy problems a plenty.

Emotional and gripping story.

I love this series. I mean it. Love it. I feel a lot like I did when I first read Hunger Games , only more . In this installment, the second in the trilogu, Rook is adjusting to life as a freed slave. Amid emotional turmoil from her ex- lover and her friends from her slave life , she is trying to determine what, if anything, she owes those she left behind, when the choice is taken out of her hands. I find myself fast becoming a rabid H. D. Gordon fan

Sometimes you just want to cry.

Outstanding continuation of this series, especially for a middle book, which sometimes is a bit weaker than the books on each side. Events cause changes in characters, some for the worse and some for the better. Old friends are reunited, and others made me cry.

I highly recommend that you read this book after having read Book 1.

Keeps getting better

I love where this series is going and I can’t wait to see how it ends eventually. Rukiya is a broken yet free wolf who is lost and must find her way. Ryker is not going to let her go that easily and the whole book is about finding a way to bring down the Masters and freeing the slaves. I loved every word!

Broken

Definitely in need of a trigger warning for abuse and rape, same as 1st.
Overall the story continues to amaze and captivate me. So very different from other shifter stories. The slave system starts to crumble as Rook continues to be a self sacrificing, broken, hero we need.

Moon Broken, the second book of the Wolf Wars series. is an ebook I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited. I think I liked this book better than the first one. The pace felt faster and the action more intense. Great advancement on the overall plot and more depth for the characters. Looking forward to book three.

Excellent

Took has escaped slavery and is in another dimension. But Kylar will not give up his hunt for her. Somehow the Masters and hounds have found a way to open a portal. Hundreds of dogs and hounds with no other choice but to attack Mire come through through and brought war with them. Very action packed and well written. Definitely a must read book.

Awwwwwww

I love this series. Strong heroine. This book focuses on Rool being in Mina with the rest of the uncollared wolves. Adriel and Rook's deepening relationship is another main theme.

Rook

This book was great. There's a war brewing and Rook seems to be the prize to be claimed. Reading this story and how things are unfolding is a bit like a chess match. I can't wait for what happens next.

Lots to Learn

I learned again to never give up. Apathy is a killer. Don’t ever give in to it. The fight goes on. Never give in to evil. If it’s wrong don’t do it. If it’s worthy to fight for, keep fighting.

Well

I didn't know which guy to choose until this book. Now, I'm clearly on one side. The other dude sucks. It was a good twist, but I didn't like the queens words and what happen with her. I'm sure it'll blow up in her face the next book.

Great series!

It was very interesting to see Rook struggle a bit mentally, despite being no longer a slave. I was happy to see her deepen her connection to Adriel and see Goldie again.

I started out liking the book. It was interesting, and then it wasn't. I stalled out and DNF. I may try to reread and complete it in the future.

I'd say if you loved the first one, then definitely read this one. If you that the first one was okay, then skip the series.

See first book for series as a whole thoughts.

Not my fav of series and I don’t like Ryker all that much almost like a traitor to what is happening if she stays with him.
