A Wolf on the hunt...
Wulfgar Hahn, better known as the Wolf of Braugne, is a man on a mission. Determined to avenge the murder of his brother, he stops at Camaeline Abbey to meet with the Chosen of Camael, goddess of the Hearth. Unfortunately, it appears the Chosen wants nothing to do with him.

A leader in disguise...
Captivated by the Wolf of Braugne despite herself, Lily poses as an unassuming priestess in order to learn more about this ruthless man. But things are not as they seem, and after foiling an assassination attempt, Lily must decide if Wulf is the destroyer from her visions, or the hero of her dreams.

A choice to be made...
As war looms on the horizon, passion sparks between them, but an enduring relationship between a soldier on the march and a leader who reveres hearth and home is impossible—or is it? Among the swirling snows of the winter Masque, the gods and goddesses of the Elder Races dance, and love will find a way..

The Chosen is the single title release of the novella that was previously published in the holiday anthology Amid the Winter Snow in December, 2017.

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook!

Wulfgar Hahn and Lily

"You make me want to be better than I am. So I was trying to be a better man."
"I didn't fall in love with a better man," she whispered. "I fell in love with you."

Loosely connected to the main Elder Series, this little gem is worth-reading.
The hesitant, almost forbidden love story between the Chosen priestess who needs to protect her small town located far far away at the Other Lands (Ys) and a warrior who seeks revenge for the death of his brother.

3 1/2 Stars!

I was lost for a little bit. I couldn't figure out where these characters fit in with the main Elder Races series. I never did figure that out; conclusion... It's a standalone novella. 😜

"He had already recognized he wanted her, but that was the moment Wulf fell in love. Because he might take her, and she might give in to him, but he knew he would never succeed in conquering her." ~Wulf

“I didn’t fall in love with a better man,” she whispered. “I fell in love with you.” ~Lilly

Anywho once I got over that ^^, I liked this one a lot! Both main characters are very willful. They will make a great/passionate team! There was the problem. Just when it was getting good, it ended. I am very much hoping Wulf and Lilly show up in some upcoming stories. They were great! Plus, I'd love to know how this war goes. I wanted more... Happy reading!

*** Previously read as part of Amid the Winter Snow

I very much enjoy the Elder Race series and this novella was no exception.

Lily can see things and she’s been having dreams about two men battling. Now that Wulf has arrived on her doorstep she must choose sides. One will lead to happiness, while the other will lead to despair.

Wolf is a bad and good man wrapped up in one. He’s formidable and honorable too. Lily is the Chosen and leader of her people. I liked Lily and Wolf. Both knew the hardship of being leaders for their people and living with chooses that may not always turn out. Their chemistry together was wonderful, these two complemented each other, and their romance was enchanting.

The Chosen is a magical story full of confrontation and desire.

4 Other World Stars!!

As always, Thea Harrison weaves a fabulous other world story with an enduring couple, some action and an enjoyable story line. Even if you haven’t read the Elder Races series, which I highly recommend “The Chosen” can definitely be read as a stand-alone.

* Narrated by the talented Sophie Eastlake who, as always did a fantastic job.

My Review:

The Chosen is one of the more unique books that I have read especially by this author. I loved the way that this couple flirts with each other, the actual wooing and courting that is actually done, the alpha male hero, the unconventional kind but powerful heroine and their fun banter. The hero is practically an actual knight, this is where there is almost another world within the world of Thea Harrison. It was fascinating to see the blend of modern but another world within it that seems so otherworldly and almost medieval historical at the same time. I am not sure what Thea Harrison was trying to do here but I am fascinated to see where this series is actually going. The romance that develops here was so fun. They have great banter, but they have a instant attraction and I liked how they interact with one another. They don't fight off their attraction too long and I appreciated that. Thea Harrison really developed a fun tale here that I wasn't expecting.

LOVED this short novella. It's in the world of the Elder Races, but on the magic realm side and not the Modern earth side like Pia and Dragos. But mostly it's not really related to the rest of the series and can be read as a stand-a-lone.

Lily is the chosen, blessed by a Goddess who gives her visions of the future and the ability to see the true nature of others. This among other witch-like powers.
She knows that in her future there are two men of power. One who will help and be the love of her life, and one who will cause untold damage. But which is which. She figures these men are Wulfgar, a formidable war-leader from afar, and the other is her neighbour who sends her nice letters and gifts.
Today she will meet Wulfgar and judge him with her powers...

Lily was a wonderful character. She's brave and sweet and honest. She knows her strengths and weaknesses and works with that but doesn't let it limit her.

Now about that cover picture... what's up with that? A modern guy in a leather trench coat? It doesn't look at all like the character(s) from this story. ...'just sayin'
Safety was wonderful

Another fun novella of Elder Races set in the magical pockets on earth called Other Lands. The cast was totally new and set in a completely different setting without any old and familiar Elder Races members. Still it was the most cutest of short stories in this series and I loved Lily and Wulfe. Thea Harrison always makes me fall in love with her amazing characters and universe.

Darn.

I wanted to like this extended long story more. As a huge Dragos and Pia fan, as a major lover of all-things-written by Thea Harrison, I needed to like the The Chosen more. Except something indefinable was missing.

Wulf and Lily were amazing, cute and sizzled with each scene. The world-building was grand, except I got lost on the tour somewhere with the introduction to the world Ys. I felt as if I stumbled into the next door neighbor's yard and was detoured, though there are fun familiar surprises. The story ends with more room for a sequel than Rungrado Stadium. The external conflict is not quite resolved just yet and I am deeply curious about the antagonist, Varian, Wulf's nemesis and enemy.

Perhaps, the dots will all be connected once Planet Dragos is released on May 14th. Despite the brevity of my disappointment with The Chosen I am anticipating the return of Dragos, Pia, Peanut/Ian, Rune, Carling and anyone else that can be squeezed into the reunion.

A story set in the Other Lands in the Elder Races universe, about Lily, the Chosen of the goddess of the Hearth and ruler of Camaeline Abbey, and Wolf, the warlord on a mission to invade the neighboring kingdom.

Wolf's reputation precedes him and most of it is bad, so the Abbey is less than thrilled to have him at their borders, trying to negotiate with them. Lily, who has been hiding her true identity among her people, agrees to his surprising request for her to serve as a liaison between their people, and uses the opportunity to discover whether Wolf will be the man that will bring good change for her people or the one who will destroy them.

The two are well matched, both in wits and temperament, and it was quite fun reading the story of their blooming romance with its happily ever after ending .

The Elder Races series unfortunately ends with the next short story, Planet Dragos, but thankfully we haven't seen the last of the Elder Races universe that continues in the spin-off series, Moonshadow.

I love this series, it was my start into the paranormal, and I do love the separate new direction, but I'm going to say I'm intensely disappointed with nothing about Pia and Drogos for over two years. Pia is pregnant, that's a big event, which anyone who follows the series knows, so it's sad to have it hanging out there for so long.

I really loved this fantasy romance novella, which perfectly mingled the fun of medieval-style romance with the joy of watching a smart, magical and wonderfully competent heroine grow into her own political power. The setting - a medieval-type society in one of the Other lands connected to contemporary Earth - felt genuinely unique, rich, and well-thought-through, a lovely link into Harrison's Elder Races series that also felt fresh and new. (And you definitely don't need to have read any of her other books before reading this one! It's quite distinct in its setting and characters from any of her other work.)

I loved the chemistry, shifting power dynamics and final partnership between the hero and the heroine. I also loved the real sense of wonder associated with the magic in this story, and while this was a perfectly satisfying romance on its own - a perfect novella-length story - I would really love to read more stories set in this part of Harrison's larger world.

I'm a HUGE Elder Races fan, so it should come as no surprise that I absolutely ADORED Lily and Wulf's story. Lily was just so sweet and mindful that every choice she makes will have an impact on her people. And Wulf...Wulf is everything I love about Elder Races heroes. He's crafty and forceful, but he sees that too heavy a hand will send Lily running. So he takes his time with her and it was FANTASTIC. I guess you could say Lily's sweetness brought out his lighter side. Honestly, Wulf needed that lightness. With everything he's had to deal with lately, he's buried under a cloud and the idea that he was heading to war wears on him.

I just... <3 <3 <3

I'm a big fan of The Elder Races books but I think this can be read as a stand alone without much difficulty. Wulf was a wonderful character that I fell for and I loved that Lily brought out a softer side to him. Lily was strong but not necessarily in the traditional warrior way and she fit perfectly with Wulf. There was just enough action, humor and romance to make this a fantastic story. My only complaint is that I was hooked on these characters and wanted more!

I first came across this story in the anthology Amid The Winter Snow.
It's a story that connects to the Elder Races books but has a much stronger type of fantasy vibe. A woman protected by a Goddess has prophetic dreams concerning two very different men and knows that the time is coming when she will make a crucial decision but which choice should she make ? It's particularly difficult when one of those men brings his troops to her door but Lily is a wily woman with tricks of her own !
As I said this did feel more like fantasy but doesn't suffer because of that. A very strong alpha male in Wulf that is softened by Lily and my only niggle is I didn't want it to end ! I'm left bereft wondering what happens next but it was a wonderful trip back into the authors imagination and as a romance worked perfectly.

ARC Review

THE CHOSEN is a shot of Elder Races-world goodness. How Thea Harrison manages to create such a vivid world in a short story is beyond me. The CHOSEN is clever, gut-clenching, and entirely too romantic. I really enjoyed the struggle Lily goes through as the Chosen for her kingdom. The mantle of leadership can be heavy at times, but the way Wulf shows up for her is just right. I really hope Ms. Harrison choses to continue this story as there is so much more to be mined.

I am reviewing this book voluntarily. I have made no promises to anyone and haven’t received any type of compensation or gift in exchange for the review.

My only qualm is that it's not really connected to the Elder Races series.
I would read a standalone book or series about these characters, I enjoyed them BUT I don't know why it was looped in with Elder Races.

This was a lot of story packed into a short. I like how different the reading experience was from the rest of the series as a whole.

Thea manages much better than other authors to differentiate her books and characters. Sex scenes all use the same repetitive phrases and words after a couple books but that's easy enough to skip over, she shines at creating wide ranging couples and settings for each book.

A nice story that has some ties to the Elder Races series but sits a long way outside. The characters are new and a different world is built. I liked both Wolf and Lily. They were complex characters who carried the plot and kept things interesting. There were some fun scenes between the two as rock met hard place. A story that adds to the series for fans but can stand alone as an introduction for new readers.

I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This novella was part of  Amid the Winter Snow  which I reviewed earlier this year. I loved it so much!  Today The Chosen releases as a separate novella outside of the anthology.  I have read almost everything by Thea Harrison. She is a favorite author of mine.

Set in the same world as the Elder Races series but felt more closely related to the Moonshadow series world, it could be easily read as a stand alone. I enjoyed learning more about this alternate dimension. Magic is one of my favorite things and I especially like the way it is implemented here. The world and characters were developed and gave me an emotional ride.  My only issue was how quickly the romance developed. Overall, a great read and interesting story.

I originally read this novella as part of the anthology that came out last Christmas. The stories are now available separately which The Chosen was included in that collection. This is part of the joint review that I did with E at The Book Pushers.

The Chosen by Thea Harrison has a slightly different feel to the previous Elder Races books as its primarily set in the parallel fantasy worlds and is based in the kingdoms of the Y’s. Lily is a priestess that is touched with the hand of a goddess and she and the other abbey priestesses as well as the surrounding villages are facing increasing tensions between two powerful men from neighbouring kingdoms who are vying for control in the kingdoms of Y’s. Weather mages producing a harsh winter and rumours of wars has placed the abbey and its surrounding territory in a predicament that affects their neutral stance with the rising tensions between the two neighbouring kingdoms.

One of the men, Wulfgar of Braugne who is the leader of one of the neighbouring kingdom, is on the mission to conquer and gain allies in the kingdoms of Y’s has a frightening reputation. Lily who the power of sight knows that either man will have the power to save the Y’s or destroy the kingdoms altogether. She has to decide which is the saviour and her abilities given to her from the Goddess will help find out who is the right man.

I really enjoyed this novella, the tone and feel was definitely different to the previous books in the series and it felt like an epic fantasy being set up. The romance between Lily and the Wolf was intriguing, fun and sexy. I loved their banter and how their preconceptions of each other became a battle of wits that evolved into a sweet romance. However I wished there was more time spent on expanding the story and their relationship because I felt it was a bit rushed especially towards the end of the novella because I was engrossed with their story, I was a bit disappointed that it ended when the story just felt like it got started.

I also liked that we got another facet in the world of the Elder Races, and I was left wanting to have more time to explore this world because the romance was so promising and the people inhabiting this setting. I do have to state that this novella felt much more like a prequel to a bigger and epic book because there are definitely open threads and this was set up for a larger story. But I really hope we get to see more of Lily and Wulf and to see what they embark on next especially on their quest together. Overall this was an enjoyable, seductive and amusing entry to the Elder Races world!

I give The Chosen a B!

3.5 stars, rounded up for writing & WB

THE CHOSEN, first published in anthology, is a tenuous tie-in to Thea Harrison's Elder Races series. (One of my favs, which is damn funny given my initial reaction to #1 DRAGON BOUND.) This novella can be read as stand-alone b/c it shares same setting & canons as series, but w/o much overlap in plotlines, backstories or characters. Also, the story revolves around Otherland territories & characters not previously mentioned (at least, I don't recall).

As an anth story, certain aspects are bound to be sacrificed. For PNR, it's usually the R--as is the case here. Love follows very quickly on MCs' initial curiosity/attraction, but Harrison provides just enough to make it plausible. (TBT, I tend to gloss over the R as given in short lengths & focus more on general story.)

THE CHOSEN was quick & fun read of alternate universe, peppered w/ Harrison's trademark humour. But fair warning--ending more HFN & conflict/military campaign unresolved (which... hello?!!). Thus, THE CHOSEN could serve as prequella for another Elder Races spin-off. (My wishful thinking, given how Elder Races series 'ended' w/ Dragos & Pia pulling stakes for their own stretch of Otherland.)

As aside, audio is done by Sophie Eastlake, narrator for entire series. Can't recommend highly enough for those who have time for audio, whether for intro to series or re-reads. (ORACLE MOON remains my top fav.)

3.75 stars--

NOTE: THE CHOSEN was originally release in the December 2017 multi-authored anthology AMID THE WINTER SNOW

ABOUT THE BOOK: In her visions, Lily sees two men fighting for her tiny country’s allegiance: the wolf and the tiger, each deadly, each cunning. One will bring Ys chaos and death, one a gentler path—but she’s destined to love whichever she chooses. The midwinter Masque is upon them, and the wolf is at her door…

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: 3.75 stars--Told from dual third person points of view (Lily and Wulf) THE CHOSEN by Thea Harrison is an adult, paranormal/fantasy romance storyline focusing on goddesses, priestesses, witches, The Chosen, psychic abilities, weather mages, seers and war.

NOTE: THE CHOSEN was originally release in the December 2017 multi-authored anthology AMID THE WINTER SNOW

Loosely connected to the author’s ELDER RACES series THE CHOSEN follows Lily, a priestess or as we will learn, The Chosen, the leader of her people at The Abbey, and the woman with whom Wulf will fall in love. Wulf and his people are at war, looking for a place to rest during the unnatural violent winter storms when he meets Lily, the woman that calls to his heart. Lily has visions of Y’s doom, at war with the unknown, and soon discovers that Wulf’s warriors are slowly being poisoned, quite possibly by someone within their midst.

Thea Harrison’s THE CHOSEN is a story of fantasy; of darkened realms accessed through hidden pathways; and of two people whose lives with be forever changed by defiance and war. A detailed story line that requires a little more explanation THE CHOSEN reads like a prequel novella or the first in a series of a new ELDER RACES spin off. The premise is entertaining and intriguing; the characters are passionate; the romance is seductive but limited.

This was Thea Harrison's offering in the anthology Amid the Winter Snow by Grace Draven . It's loosely tied to the Elder Races in that the story takes place in an other land and the Winter Solstice Masque of the gods is approaching. I liked the characters and the plot. The dialog was witty. No tstl characters here. Lily and Wulf's romance was very sweet. I wish it had been longer.

It was an interesting story with the two kingdoms battling and finding out which one, for certain, was the aggressor. Who was controlling the weather and causing these problems? But... the two characters only had sparks in her dreams, there just wasn't much chemistry. If the story was more interesting or seemed to have a point, more explanation of the Chosen and what it means, maybe but we are left with only partially understanding the conflict. So it really needed a hot romance and didn't deliver. Good but just.

This could easily be skipped as it barely touches the other elder races. They are mentioned but I wouldn't have known it was in the same universe else wise.

I was reluctant about reading this story. I even contemplated skipping it. It's not a secret that I read Elder races series just because of Dragos & Pia. So why would I read this story about new characters set into some new world?
In the end, my OCD got the better of me. The falling in love part happened too quickly. Especially since they are not Wyr so it can't be explained with mating. But I loved the world and I hope we will se more of it...

So this was in the Elder Races world, sort of. It was new characters in a completely different dimension or world. They talked about earth. But none of the Elder races problems or characters touched this story.

I really loved Wild. He was charismatic and cute. I loved the way he flirted and how witty he was. This was a sweet story.
