It’s been said every story must start somewhere. Ours begins with a professional dork. The kind who fixes computers and lives in his gran’s basement. The kind tapped by destiny (that saucy minx) to become the world’s first superhero.
And not a moment too soon...
A nano-sized artificial intelligence is on the loose! It got itself dart-gunned into a cow butt by a frog man in a porn store! Two stoners are corrupting it on Twitter! And that’s just the first three pages!!
Join our dork of destiny as he channels the Collective Unconscious—his psychic superpower—in a harrowing tale of high drama, romance, betrayal, revenge, Jesus chickens, cocaine, weirdos, magicians, ninjas, NFL spies, and disco ball water torture administered to the tune of Rapture, by Blondie. My god, man, what does it all mean!?
It means uncorking that next bottle of wine isn’t only a good idea—it’s advisable.
David Beem enjoys superhero movies, taekwondo, and flossing. He lives in Djibouti with his family and crippling self-doubt. To help actualize David’s inner confidence, visit his website and buy stuff: www.davidbeem.com
The story is a good one. Reminded me of Douglas Adam's works, specifically Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in that there are many zany characters, but all seem plausible the way they're written. Many situations occur that are way weird when read out of context. Impossible for me to say too much without giving the best parts away.
Edger is the main character, and he's computer nerd, but also brilliant. And kind. But there is also a kind of deranged Cow. Men in black suits. A perpetually stoned gay couple. The woman of Edger's dreams. A grandmother he needs to protect as well as her lover. One fantastic adventure.
Edger ends up fighting for his sanity and life when he agrees to an old friends request. This is one wild ride, very funny. But not for kids!
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading this author's other works.
As soon as I read this in the description, I knew I would be hooked. “In his arsenal are the skills of Bruce Lee, the strength of Samson, the wisdom of the ages.” I have been a fan of Bruce Lee’s since I was a kid, so any reference to him has to mean this book is going to be entertaining. Everyone loves a good superhero even if it comes in the form of a “retail dork.”
You won’t find any major plot twists in this book and I wouldn’t call it a page-turner, but it’s a very entertaining read. It’s funny which is pretty cool. I had moments where I literally did LOL! If you’re looking for something different from your normal beach read, then this is something to try out. It’s a science fiction novel full of many funny moments and a main character that you can’t help but fall in love with.
When a young, orphaned man is approached by a past college buddy to take an untested drug that could melt his brain but if not he would be a superhero, he starts to learn that much of what he believed about his past and parents is not true. Beem offers a somewhat unique blend of science fiction and humor. If you are looking for a deep, complicated, save-the-world-from-artificial-intelligence-gone-bad; this is probably not your book. However; if you enjoy reading those save-the-world-from-artificial-intelligence-gone-bad--and enjoy a slightly cynical, nerdy-yet-humorous view of the world--this book is a fun blend of science fiction and humor. As a recovering engineer--I am certainly a bit of a science geek and the author appeals to that geek in readers with his humor and writing style.
Readers will not want to put the book down. While the book isn't a page turner in terms of dramatic plot twists or heavy sci fi action and adventures--readers won't want to put the book down. The character interactions, the dialogue, and the situations encountered are simply so entertaining that I had to see just what happened next. If you are "skimmer"--you may find yourself wanting to read every word because the author drops little bits of humor throughout almost every page.
Would I recommend Edger by David Beem? If you enjoy science fiction themes, unexpected superheroes and have, what my husband calls, a "nerdy sense of humor"--this book will have you hooked from the first few pages. I loved the author's writing style, I loved his ability to toss in random humor that caught me by surprise at times and made me smile and even laugh out loud. I am not always a huge superhero/ super-villain fan--but, this book was one of my favorites so far this year. Sometimes you just need a laugh--and this book is certainly good for that. I would love to see Edger become a series--or at least read more books of this style from the author.
I received a copy of this ebook from the author/publisher for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.
David Beem’s Edger is not at all what I had expected. And that is not a bad thing. This book cracked me up from start to finish. It was wacky and quirky that had me in stitches. I had the pleasure of listening to the audio version with the narration by Vikas Adams, which was a fabulous performance. Edger is getting five plus stars from me. I am definitely looking forward to reading the other Edger books to find out what he gets into next. I received the audio version of this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
David Beem weaves a wonderfully wacky tale about a lovable nerd named Edger. While perusing the first chapter, I nearly fell off the couch laughing. Overall, it's a well-crafted read that will entertain from the first chapter to the last. I highly recommend this book!
This story has it all… Nerds, jocks, Super hero’s, ‘evil’ villains, Artificial Intelligence, Bruce Lee, nerdy talk and jokes. Oh and an evil cow. David Beem takes a 26 year old UBER DORK computer wiz Edger (Ed-jer) on a fantastic journey to become a Superhero. Edger must figure out how to control the Collective Unconscious and get back his buddies technology, InstaTron Tron, before it does something crazy. Or before someone influences InstaTron Tron to do more harm than shut down the power on the Eastern Seaboard.
The way the story is written has a kind of Big Bang dialog to it but somehow ‘Edger’ feels so much more relatable. I loved the character development, the humor and all the little fandom jokes ‘Edger’ had to offer. From start to finish David Beam had me hooked. You can’t go wrong with a ‘high tech super-advanced nano-artificial intelligence” that thinks it might be a neo-Nazi anarchist cow. If you like quirky characters and dialog, a little science fiction, artificial intelligence and superhero’s than you’ll enjoy ‘Edger’. I hope this story keeps going because Beem had me at “Welcome to UBER DORK. My name is Edger, Ed-jer, and I’ll be your Dork”.
OMG - this book was really different but amazing at the same time. David Beem does an amazing job of describing the characters and the action that is taking place.
The main character (Edger) is a 26-year old gadget retail dork. There is a psychic superpower that is administered with a hypodermic needle -- and it starts by being administered to a cow. Then the cow ---- oh wait - I can NOT tell you all that is going to happen. But believe me, it will keep you wondering what is really going to be happening next!!!
I seriously hope that David Beem plans to write a continuation of this book -- because I am sure it will also be a hit!!!
If you're into cerebral science fiction and superheroes with lots of fun tropes thrown in and a mess of comedic situations, then this is definitely the book for you. I admit this isn't my usual genre of book to read, but I couldn't resist checking it out. I've even gone on to the second book in the series and will await even more to come.
You'll find references to football, historical figures, dead celebrities who come back to life in the Collective Unconscious, lots of quirky characters, and some daddy issues. This Michigan fan may have twitched a little any time the words Notre Dame were mentioned, but I shook it off and kept going. I think I literally belly laughed once Michael Jackson showed up.
Really funny. A great read, a weird read, with wonderful characters and a bizarre storyline. An evil cow. InstaTron Tron. Bruce Lee. It's a great book. Read it, and laugh.
The characters were amazing. I loved following Edger on his adventure throughout the book and meeting all the characters that he met throughout his journey.
The story-line was different. I have never read a story like this before and I was a bit leery about reading it, but I always give each book a try. It did take me a while to get through this story because I had a tendency to not understand some of what was going on but, it was still one heck of a wild ride. There were a lot of different scenes going on within this book and at times, I was a bit confused but the humor kept me entertained and laughing from beginning to end. Beem is an extremely talented storyteller with a HUGE imagination!! The scenes and characters changed with each new chapter, which is where I would get lost, but I would continue to read on and the parts that caught me laughing out loud, I would share with my boyfriend and he would laugh right along with me. Another thing this author did that I liked was he would get me so worked up at the end of one chapter that I would want to continue to read just to get back to the scene that I was screaming at. Even though this book wasn't quite my cup of tea, it was still hilarious and did keep my attention most of the time and I won't forget this read anytime soon because of it's uniqueness. I also still recommend it as well.
Ok, listen up... I was skeptical when I sat down to read Edger, because I thought the idea was too close to the Chuck tv series. A similarity the the author admits, since Edger is loosely based on that series. After finishing the book, all I have to say is the similarity ends with the concept. Edger is a witty, laugh out loud adventure story that you must read. It is skillfully written and keeps you turning that page. I don’t like to give spoilers in my reviews, and I’m fighting the urge to tell you everything about it. But I’ll restrain myself and simply say, if you like a story filled with tight characters, strong dialogue and a well thought out plot, then Edger by David Beem is a book you must get. Have fun with it, I did. I’m eagerly awaiting the next book “Edger Lives”.
This is a mix of sci-fi, spy action adventure, and ghost story. It is a fish out of water, nerd saves the world and almost gets the girl story. But mostly it's just hilarious. Edger's (soft g) college buddy, who is now a wealthy tech magnate, and Edger's boss, has invented an AI. Unfortunately it escaped into the world and became evil. It also bonded with a cow. Mikey (the boss) has also invented a process which will allow someone to tap the human collective unconscious, revealing the sum of mankind's knowledge and experience. He chooses Edger, but Edger must find and bond with the AI within 96 hours or he will die. On the plus side there is a very cool super suit to wear. After some negotiation, Edger agrees to undergo the process. He finds the collective unconscious is more like a hive mind hosted by Bruce Lee. He is kidnapped/aided by Mikey's PA Mary, who is an undercover agent; beautiful, deadly, and way out of Edger's league. Life threatening adventures and a lot of fun ensue. I truly laughed out loud at many of the situations Edger finds himself in. This book is a roller coaster, alternating between action and humor. A quick, fun read.
Edger is not your average low achieving computer Dork. He's a Prince of Dorkness in waiting. Ha. No, he's the Dork of Destiny, so dang goofy and sweet, not your average action hero! This book is full of laugh out loud comedy, it isn't like anything else I've ever read. Few movies match up to the comedy either. It's a bit like Chuck, if Chuck was taller, handsomer and had superpowers, and Chuck's girlfriend Sarah just wishes she was as sexy and talented as Mary. (Can't say more, it'd be a spoiler!) My favorite bit is the Cluck and Pray that hints toward the real world. There are several hints about the real world that make this book even funnier. I read book 2, also. It's even funnier. The author pulled out all the stops and went for it. Can't wait for book 3.
