Short, Sweet Cozy. Why 3 Stars? See Last Paragraph.
I enjoyed this quick-read cozy, which is well-written and nicely plotted. Author Diane Weiner hits all the right notes in the contemporary cozy by sticking to the tried-and-true Do-list and avoiding the Don’t-You-Ever list.
Emily and Henry Fox—and “daughter” Maddy—are likable, well-written protagonists, who have wonderful neighbors, friends and adorable fur-friends. The couple “help” the local police find a stalker, a housebreaker and a murderer.
There are heart-warming, serendipitous discoveries that advance the story, and happily, there are enough red herrings—a few blatantly unlikable. As always when reading cozies, I kept a gimlet eye on “outsiders” and newer residents, but the author takes the other tack found in cozies, some soft-boiled and (annoyingly) in a few hard-boiled crime books. No spoilers, but if you’re a mystery fan, you’ll see it coming.
Warning: If you are uncomfortable with LGBT and/or anti-hunting issues, I suggest you skip this book.

I knocked off stars, because I could not believe the premise for the last 20-25% of the book. How can a teen over 14 yrs of age have no say in her guardianship? Emily was named as Maddy’s legal guardian, in late-mom Fiona’s will—not an uncle whom Maddy had never met. Furthermore, Emily and Henry have in loco parentis standing, plus they’ve begun the adoption process.
Either I don’t understand how guardianship works or Vermont’s laws are different.
