Paleontology in the 19th and very early 20th century had its flowering in North America, due to a variety of factors, such as the western advancement of the United States and an upwelling of public support and interest due to novel discoveries and museums. However, competition between two rival scientists, Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh, seriously hampered the advancement of this scientific field in what became known as the Bone Wars. A number of setbacks in the scientific field occurred as a result of the rivalry between these two famous 19th century paleontologists.
