Märta Tikkanen
36 books56 followersMärta Tikkanen (b. April 3, 1935) is a Swedish-speaking Finnish writer. Born in Helsinki she worked as a reporter for Hufvudstadsbladet from 1956 to 1961. She graduated from the University of Helsinki, Master of Arts in 1958 and received a Master of Philosophy in 1961. Tikkanen was married to the writer Henrik Tikkanen. A film based on her book Manrape (Män kan inte våldtas, "Men Can't Be Raped"), directed by Jörn Donner, was released in 1978.

Kommer jag någonsin tröttna på att läsa om den här boken? Antagligen inte pga den är helt briljant. Avundas alla som har den här läsningen framför sig.

April 9, 2018Tätä on kyllä hurjan vaikea arvioida. Tästä näkee kilometrien päähän, miten suuri tämä on varmasti ollut julkaisuaikanaan, rohkea ja voimakas. Onhan se sitä monin tavoin nytkin, vaikkei niin hätkähdyttävä kuin olin ehkä ajatellut. Tässä on paljon hienoa ja terävää, yksinkertaisuus riisuu aseista ja saa runokammoisenkin tuntemaan olevansa mukavuusalueellaan. Silti se ei ehkä itselle oikein henkilökohtaisesti aukea, mutta tarvitseekos tuota nyt aina.
Naisasiain äänenä, feministisenä teoksenahan tämä klassikko on ehdottomasti paikallaan.

Det kändes tvunget med en omläsning parallellt med Måste försöka skri-. Fortfarande en fantastisk skildring som kryper under huden på läsaren, så rakt på sak och avskalat. Det gav en extra dimension att läsa den tätt inpå läsningen om dess tillkomst – och jag har faktiskt ett vagt minne av att jag gjort så här förut, läst om Århundradets kärlekssaga när jag läste Två: Scener ur ett konstnärsäktenskap, troligtvis sommaren 2006. Det blir ju lätt så när man läser en författare som skriver så pass självbiografiskt som Märta Tikkanen.
Det här är en bok jag är glad att ha i bokhyllan, en bok jag kommer att behöva bläddra i och läsa om ytterligare gånger. Den växer och ändrar form i takt med mina egna livserfarenheter – ändå drabbade den mig redan i tonåren när jag läste den första gången.

The Love Story of the Century, a story in verse, takes the reader deep into the pit of a woman’s relationship with her husband, who struggles with alcoholism. Drawing on her own life experiences, Tikkanen creates an authentic and compelling image of addiction. She depicts how it seeps into every crevice of a family, from the physical effects to the mental strain. How, on the worst days, it strips everything away—hope, happy memories, belief that things can change—to leave one grasping desperately into thin air. How the individual fights against it, loved ones try to help, try to leverage the human instinct for compassion and love. But then the help turns to harm and the harm turns to help and suddenly there is no clear view of what is right and what is wrong.
Although her words are spare, Tikkanen uses her time with the reader thoroughly. She explores the varied roles the unnamed narrator must take on with her husband: wife, mother, doctor, saviour, voice of reason, and at times even accomplice. She pulls back the curtain to glimpse the good times in the relationship, before things began to fall apart, while also digging into the emotional and physical abuse that all too often accompany addiction. At times the story depicts a bare existence, a simultaneous acceptance and denial of the situation at hand, perhaps a wilful blindness to simply allow survival from day to day. Yet, in the stronger moments, Tikkanen makes a call to women to shed the gendered expectations placed upon them by society, to escape and live their lives freely.
The narrative voice in this work beautifully and painfully portrays the intense conflict experienced by a spouse when the love of their life struggles with alcoholism. It explores deeply the ripping and tearing apart caused by disparate thoughts and conflicting feelings compounded over time, universal considerations such as: Should I stay? (Should I go?) Maybe it will be different this time, right? (Or maybe not?) It’s okay to stay, because it isn’t affecting the children. (Or is it?) It’s okay to stay because he isn’t hurting me. (Or is he?) If x, y, and z happens again, I will leave. I mean it this time. Or maybe – you know what – maybe it doesn’t matter what I do, so let him be and I will go on with my life. (If I can still call it that.)
While it is easy to get lost in this book, tearing through it quickly in one sitting, don’t let that detract from its depth. Tikkanen has chosen each word carefully to construct a sharp reality where the reader is forced to consider – to very nearly take on for themselves – these conflicting emotions which saturate a life lived with addiction. The structure even reflects this haunting pain, the impact that this illness has on each individual and the whole of a family. Brief lines and frequent breaks build rambling sentences which continue on and on at length with no punctuation, no end, no clear resolution.

Wou! Hieno ja voimallinen teos naisen tekemästä reproduktiivisesta ja emotionaalisesta työstä perheessä ja parisuhteessa sekä asemasta yhteiskunnassa. Tämä voisi olla 2010-luvun kirjallisuutta. Osuu maaliin justiinsa eikä melkeen, aaah! Herättää paljon myös omia muistoja. Harkitsen lukevani ihan kohta uudelleen.

Efter tips från kollega så har jag nu äntligen lyssnat på ljudboken till denna bok.
Så gripande! Var nära till gråt ett par gånger. Jag vill köpa ett fysiskt exemplar av denna bok, läsa om, markera favoritcitat, drabbas igen av den nakna ärlighet som genomsyrar hela boken.

Vollotin tyyliin 90% tän lukemisesta ihan täysillä… Erittäin tarkkanäköinen kuvaus siitä millaista on jakaa arki väkivaltaisen ihmisen kanssa mutta vähän jäi ärsyttämään se, miten voivotellaan sitä miten vaikeeta kaikki on lapsille ilman että autetaan niitä. Tietty se on tosi realistista että ihmiset ei pysty/saa aikaseks lähdettyä vaikeista suhteista vaikka ois lapsia mut tuntu et niitä käytettiin vähän säälipisteinä ja jotenki oon ite sitä mieltä että itteään varten ois toki hyvä pystyä lähtemään mutta jos hankkii lapsia ni siihen on velvollisuus. Onko ”parempi” vanhempi jos kattoo sivusta kun toinen vanhempi käyttäytyy väkivaltasesti?

En oikein osaa sanoa mitään järkevää runoteoksista. Pidin tästä, koska runot ovat helppotajuisia? Tikkanen kirjoittaa aiheesta, joka on ajataon ja kulttuurien rajoista piittaamaton. Vaikken olekaan perheellinen, pystyin tuntemaan mitä Märta ajatteli ja tunsi, näkemään sen ristiriitaisuuden. Muutama runo aihepiirin sivusta jäi myös vahvasti mieleen.
