Lockhart is the kind of man who will go to any lengths to get what he wants. Cerise is about to learn this the hard way. She thinks they connect emotionally, but soon realises that Lockhart's intentions toward her are not at all what she believed. She always knew he was dangerous and every fibre of her being was telling her to run. However, after he introduced her to a lifestyle that teased the very depths of her depravity, she couldn’t stay away if she tried. He may not love her, but he wants to keep her and no-one can keep him from his prize. Not even Cerise. In the end, games and blackmail are half the fun of winning.
A. E. Murphy is the Queen of sarcasm and satire, she likes long walks in the park, as much as ice cubes like to chill in a roasting oven. She’s effortlessly independent and so good at adulting it’s unfair on the rest of the world. She only napped twice today and has only avoided the dishes for three days before making the child slaves do them this morning. Winning! Her favourite hobby is writing, her worst hobby is reading through that writing. Also she has two cats that carry toys to the top of the stairs and drop them down so they can chase them. They do this repeatedly in the middle of the night. Who cares if she has work the next morning? Not the cats, that’s for sure. And if it’s not the cats doing the waking, it’s the toddler crawling into bed with her and pulling individual hairs from her scalp with pudgy little fingers for comfort. This is likely why she’s in a constant state of grump unless there’s chocolate and coffee. P.S. Please leave feedback, if not on the book then on this ridiculous bio she wrote herself. It’s the least you can do seeing as she’ll forever talk in the third person now. Alex loves her readers. Alex says thank you. Alex smiles.
I’m a fan of this authors’; or at least I was because now I don’t think I want to read any more books of hers tbh.
The thing is, I find it very difficult to like a romance book when I pretty much hate the hero. It’s even more annoying that every time I thought I might actually start tolerating him, or even liking him, he pulls some piece of shit move that has me hating him even more.
Why did I push through, then, you might ask? Because I liked the heroine and the book was in her POV. She had spunk and personality. So I guess the star is for her.
But the hero, though…god, he made me want to DNF at least 3 times. The 3rd time made me give up (mentally at least, because for some reason I finished it) - it is the most effective tactic to get me to hate a book and to seriously ponder never reading that authors’ books again.
I wouldn’t recommend reading the rest of this review if you don’t want to know anything about it. Frankly, what I’m going to share isn’t really a spoiler in my opinion, put people have different definitions of that, so yeah. You’ve been warned.
So, the POS hero.
The author really tried to tell the reader (repeatedly) that he doesn’t give off a creep/predator vibe. And I do admit that if someone is extremely good looking, it’s much easier to overlook creepy behaviour. Michelle Wolf had a really funny joke about it, basically telling men that if they don’t want to be considered creepy when hitting on a woman in this day and age, they only have to do one thing: be hot.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t actually see what Lockhart looked like, what with him being a book character and all, so to me he was just a fucking creep that got worse and worse as the book progressed.
And in this current climate, it’s really difficult for me to enjoy alphaholes in positions of power who believe the world revolves around them and start touching women during business meetings (their first time meeting and with others present too!), for example, or start spanking women to “punish” and “tame” (god, has the romance genre made me hate that word) that they don’t have any sort of relationship with. That’s all great for an erotic novella or a dark read, but this book is listed as a contemporary romance so all I see him as is a predator and creep.
I wanted to DNF this book at the first spanking, but I pushed through because I liked the heroine (although I didn’t like her much by the end considering she was sleeping with her boss and that wouldn’t have just affected her, but her friends too, and because she is willing to prostitute and change herself, like she’s some kind of martyr, for a friend..ugh).
Then, I wanted to DNF when he, out of the blue, constrains her and puts a fucking gag in her mouth even though they barely started their “relationship” and had no trust or anything developed. That is is such a fucked up thing to do, man. It’s beyond fucked up. And once again, this would be fine if it were a short erotic novella or a dark read with dub-con, but this is fucking CR. And just because the author made the heroine like what he did to her does not make it OK at-fucking-all - she had no fucking power to say or do anything to stop him. And that’s fine - if it’s discussed beforehand. But to do it like that, that is assault.
I really should’ve stopped there. I know I should’ve. It’s my fault for continuing.
Because guess what else he does, near the end of the book? He ambushes the heroine when she gets out of the shower, with another fucking woman. Of course, the heroine is into it, even though they never ever discussed sharing. I’m glad she’s had her cuckold fantasy that she didn’t know she had come to life , but fuck that, it is so fucking wrong for a contemporary romance. She didn’t even express any interest in women beforehand and actually mentioned how she didn’t know she was into girls, and then suddenly she is immediately attracted to this woman literally the second she sees her?
And why the fuck can’t you say in the blurb that this book contains these things? It’s not like they’re spoilers - they’re fucking sexual acts. And if someone is reading what they think is a romance book and then suddenly gets a heroine sucking the heroes’ dick along with another woman and who then watches the 2 fuck in front of her, let me tell you, a lot of them will feel blindsided. It’s one of those things that you’re either into or you’re not. I’m into them - in fucking erotica. Or porn. Both of which usually mention what sexual elements the readers or viewers will find - at least in porn they have the decency to tell you about threesomes, kinks, and so on.. But NOT in CR. And if you must include these elements in a CR book, just mention it. Just say this book contains FF/FFM scenes and bdsm elements. Well actually, it goes beyond FFM - this woman is suddenly a cuckold, or whatever the version of a female cuckold is called.
So just fucking mention it. It’s not a spoiler, it’s just common curtesy so you don’t get bad reviews for including these types of things.
Saying that he “might be considered slightly abusive in real life situations” simply isn’t cutting it (Which unfortunately I saw afterwards because the app first opened the book on the first chapter). 99% of romance heroes are like that, so that means absolutely nothing to me, expect maybe “here’s another asshole “dominant” hero like the million others you’ve already read”. Especially since what he did to her - the touching during the first business meeting, spanking her without any prior consent and tying up her hand ands gagging her (again without any prior consent), is not “slightly abusive” in real life situations. It is fucking abuse and if she hadn’t been into it, all-out sexual assault.
And even if I did enjoy this…twist…how am I ever going to believe the heroine alone will be enough? For a man that can easily get 2 women (and I’m assuming even more if he wanted to, considering his money, success, and looks) to do anything he wanted, to both of them literally worship his dick at the same time, why wouldn’t he always want that?
But you know what the shit cherry on top of the shit cake was? That he has the audacity to be jealous and possessive not even hours after fucking another woman in front of her, claiming she was flirting in front of him when she was clearly fucking not. The hypocrisy of this man truly was something else. Or how he snapped at the OW when she referred to the heroine as his “new playmate” (not in a bad way, tbh) - which is exactly what she is as per their no-strings sexual agreement - and goes all “she isn’t a toy!”, like that’s supposed to make me see how spesh-ul she is to him. Go fuck yourself dude. And he was so fucking childish. With his “love is stupid” and “I’ll never love anyone” spiel and his temper tantrums - how the hell was he so successful? At 29? I didn’t believe it for a second. Obviously, it has to be nepotism + a willingness to do absolutely anything to get there, which only serves to make him even more unattractive to me, if that’s even possible.
For some reason, I finished the book, I guess because I’d already invested all this time. And the way he continued to act, the way he manipulated her into being in a “relationship” with him…ugh. I guess I kinda hoped that she’d fall in love with the OW and leave him for her. That would’ve been fucking amazing. Since he’s so fucking jealous of any men she talks to, this would’ve been the ultimate fuck you - her being with the woman he brought into her life. Or at least also have a sex scene with another man where he has to fucking lick her with that man, watch her have sex with him, and preferably also have him suck the OM’s dick.
And the fact that he constantly wants to change her, “tame her”, and turn her into something else, from her hair to her behaviour…I’m not into that and I find it very difficult to understand how anyone can find that an attractive quality, unless you have these reverse-cuckold fantasies and want to be less than the man. I know that there are people who like this lifestyle and that’s great for them, but that’s a sexual thing, not a romance book thing. I don’t even know if I’m making any sense at this point, so whatever.
Just…so disappointed in all of this, and honestly, I’m not sure I’ll be reading this author anytime soon…or ever. I do firmly believe that everyone has the right the write whatever the fuck they want, to read what they want, and to have whatever fantasies and desires they want. But fucking say so, mention it so readers can decide if they want to read your book. Especially with elements like this in a CR book.
I really love this author and have enjoyed books by her in the past. I wasn't aware of this book coming out but as soon as I saw it, I picked it up! The pacing was good and the storyline is definitely interesting. Cerise, is the lead singer of a band (former child prodigy/pianist) with two of her good friends, Dane and Kai. Their band is newly represented/managed by Lockhart and his team. This is the first book in the series that tells the story of Lockhart and Cerise. He is a wealthy, arrogant, alpha male that has his sights on Cerise and she is the "wild one" that doesn't like to be controlled or handled by anyone.
I didn't know that this was a cliffhanger and I have no idea when #2 is coming out, so I'm kind of bummed about that. I really want to see how this is going to play out. Lockhart is the domineering, arsehole type that always gets what he wants... so if you like that trope than you'll enjoy this book.
Holy shit do I love this author! Every single book has me hook, line and sinker! Murphy writes, hands down, the BEST book boyfriends! She’s taken the role of bossy alpha to a whole new level with her latest release, I didn’t know if I wanted to kiss him or kick him in the balls! A gripping storyline paired with her fantastic writing skills make this book a must read for all alpha asshole lovers!!
PEOPLE YOU ARE TOTALLY MISSING OUT!!! I REALLY don't understand why this author doesn't have more readers. I have read now two trilogy's of her and I HAVE LOVED BOTH and they are each currently sitting on my FAVORITE 5 STARS SHELF.
For those who don't like long reviews... This Authors books have the sexiness of K. Webster and Jewel E. Ann, the humor of Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, the spitfire of Meagan March, and the uniqueness of Karina Halle and Callie Hart with the soft edges of a Julie Johnson read
I am rating all three books in this trilogy in this review; Lockhart, Lockdown and Unlocked. Yes you have to read them in that order since it's all one story with the same characters. Oh and just so you know I also read the Broken Trilogy, loved it and also placed it on my Favorite 5 Star self (Broken, Connected, and Forever; again three books, one story).
Some authors aren't able to pull off one story for 600 or more pages without losing the interest of us fickle readers and I'll admit I'm nervous to start any trilogy cause, well who really has the time to read a book or more only to find out you've wasted your time cause you just can't finish it through to the end? And if your like me and your ruled by your slight OCD tendencies and simple have to follow through forcing yourself to the end? your left with a bitter resentful taste on your palette.
I DO NOT have this problem with this author. She kept this story moving along at a really good pace. All the characters had realistic quirks that make them endearing. Lockhart and Cerise have explosive chemistry and constantly battle each other for control of their emotions. I have read a lot of books about music and bands and they can get repetitive in a way, but NOT this one. One of the things I love most about A.E. Murphy is that she has this amazing ability to make each story her own with the trials and tribulations her characters go through. I loved the feisty but laid back attitude that Cerise has and the alpha personality Lockhart has until he falls for Cerise.
A.E Murphy is the reason I will always give a young new author a chance regardless of the number of readers they have. So Thank You Ms Murphy
I was able to form an opinion of this book very early on. Literally, within about 5 seconds of the two protagonists meeting Lockhart has his hand up Cerise's skirt. I thought "oh it's one of those books". I don't like these unrealistic stories where the author focuses more on sex scenes than actual plot. So there was a bit of that. However, it wasn't all that, as I was initially expecting. There was a good story and I love reading about no-strings romances turning more serious. So outside of some of the outlandish sex stuff it was actually a good read. Yes Lockhart is too controlling, but I guess you have to suspend disbelief a bit. One thing that I found weird was the lack of descriptions of scenes. For example, Cerise would say something about Lockhart coming to pick her up and then suddenly in the next sentence they are already in his car. Or one character would drop a towel but we never got the sentence saying he grabbed the towel in the first place. It wasn't a huge deal, but I like to get enough information to help me imagine the scene.
Really enjoyed the start of this series and am going to order the next book as soon as I have finished writing this review! I am a huge fan of A. E. Murphy but to start with I didn’t know how much I would enjoy the book as I wasnt sure if I would be able to relate to an up and coming music star, but I needn’t of worried. As always Murphy’s characters were relatable and I enjoyed the interactions between them. I’m looking forward to seeing how Cerise and Lockharts ‘relationship’ will continue in the next book!
Cerise and Lockhart 🔥 🔥 🔥 Cerise is in a band with her best friends. Lockhart is her manager... And hot. This book was incredible and I couldn't put it down
Loved this. New to me author but the story was great and I loved Lockhart and Cerise is a feisty character even though she clearly has "issues" that havent been explored as yet. Love the way it is written, makes it feel realistic. Even though Lockhart came across as a controlling ***** in the beginning he is very intriguing. Cant wait to read the next installment as there are many unanswered questions. Excellent.
So I've been slowly by surely reading my way through everything that AE Murphy has written after falling in love with one of her newer releases... I can say I wasn't too sure about this one when I started it... I really wanted to hate Lockhart at times while reading but overall I think I kinda liked him LOL not saying that I didn't wanna kick him in the nuts at times haha Lockhart is dark depraved and never fails to get what he wants in life so when he sets his sights on fiesty kick butt Cerise when she is signed with her new band he really doesn't give her an option to say no to him. I read this in pretty much one sitting as its so easy to read! Onto book 2 as soon as I can as this one leaves you hanging waiting to see whats next for this pair.
From the get go you are warned Lockhart is a bastard alpha and not to fall in love with him....did I listen? Hell no. There were times when I liked him and times when I wanted to punch him in his smug face. Enri was a little piece of sunlight and Kai is another character that I loved but felt for especially at the end. Definitely a roller coaster of a read.
Omg, so Lockhart sounds like an absolute ar#@hole but is it bad that I love him ‘a little’ lol Cerise is in a band with her best friends Dane and Kai but Lockhart wants her body and soul 🥵🥵🥵🥵 the body language is off the charts......book 2 is now ready
how many times do people have to say this but not everyone is into a book where sharing is considered romance. saying it has ff/ffm scenes is not a spoiler bc sharing shouldn’t be a plot element to add a fun little twist
I had big expectations... And it just happened to be not my story. I had a problem with characters... I just couldn't stand them. But writing is good and I love Alex Murphy so I will try and find something more in the story with next two books.
