Ramps up the violence and sex.
Manara is a master of drawing naked people, so I'm happy Jodorowsky's script lets him let loose in that regard.
I'm not too familiar with the Borgia history, but this basically follows what I read on Wikipedia with the accusations of "adultery, incest, simony, theft, bribery, and murder" fully realized on the page. Apparently much of these accusations could be undeserved... Jodorowsky's script goes on as if there was even more going on behind the scenes. These people are vile.

The story continuous where the previous volume left off: Rodrigo Borgia was successful in winning (or buying) the required 15 votes in order to ascend to papacy and was known for being strictly abstemious in his eating and drinking, keeping a magnificent household and gambling notoriously at cards. He quickly became one of the wealthiest men of his time.
He is the only Pope in history to fully acknowledge his illegitimate children by his longtime mistress: Juan, Cesare, Lucrezia, and Jofre. The story chronicles his political maneuverings involving his children & trusted servants in order to crush any opposition to his office.
Please take note that the story, "The Borgia" was intended to be published in three volumes but only two were published and the story remained inconclusive.

Lido pela primeira vez em 2014 e relido agora em 2021, anos depois de ter tomado contacto com outras obras cujo tema é a família Bórgia...
Penso que os acontecimentos que marcaram esta família e que lhe deram a fama que têm até hoje, são aqui demasiado exagerados. Mas enfim, a infâmia geralmente alimenta as histórias escritas séculos depois de os verdadeiros acontecimentos terem ocorrido e sobre os quais, na realidade, pouco se sabe. Terá mesmo Lucrécia Bórgia mantido uma relação incestuosa com o irmão César? Mais do que verdade, não terá sido esse boato criado para denegrir toda a família? Nunca o saberemos, no entanto o mesmo será perpetuado devido a estes livros de ficção histórica...
Os desenhos de Manara são bonitos, mas obviamente com nudez por vezes desenecessária e lascívia exagerada.

La storia è divisa in 4 volumi, ma questa recensione vale per tutti.
Prima di tutto lasciatemi scrivere una cosa che mai avrei pensato di dover dire, ma leggendo altre recensioni è necessario: i disegni sono di Milo Manara, fumettista universalmente noto per disegni che vanno dal sensuale all'erotico. Sì, questa storia contiene uomini e donne nude.
Superato lo "shock" della nudità, devo ammettere che la storia è avvincente. I Lannister hanno solo da imparare dai Borgia. Mi aspettavo tuttavia più veleni, soprattutto da Lucrezia. Il quarto libro, il finale, mi è sembrato fin troppo veloce.

Disgusting, sick, and inaccurate!!! Would never recommend this to anyone! Even worse than the first one! I will not be reading the other books in the series!

El segundo tomo de la saga, en mi humilde opinión, es el mejor de los cuatro. En El Poder y el Incesto se narra con impecables dibujos de Manara los primeros pasos violentos de Alejandro VI al poder como Papa, luego de "comprar" los votos necesarios, y el reencuentro familiar con sus hijos ya adolescentes.
Estamos ante una obra de arte del dibujante erótico por excelencia Milo Manara y por esta razón es que esta segunda entrega es superior a las demás ya que es donde el personaje femenino de la familia, Lucrecia Borgia, cobra vida. El trabajo en equipo de ambos artistas en presentar a Lucrecia es acertado, ya que la hacen víctima de su destino y la retratan como una mujer obediente sin caer en la tentación de darle un protagonismo forzado en la trama.
La crueldad de Alejandro VI en este tomo se ve incrementada con la ayuda de la perversión de su hijo Cesar Borgia, del narcisismo de Lucrecia y de los caprichos de Juan Borgia.
Otro aspecto interesante de la obra es que aparecen personajes históricos como Maquiavelo y Michelleto, también conocido como el Verdugo de Valentino, que si bien son secundarios hacen aportes significativos a la historia y son portadores de las atrocidades que ocurrían en esa época.
Mas allá de la parte fantástica del relato propuesto por los artistas, hay que reconocer que la presentación de cómo personas sin escrúpulos llegaban al poder es bastante interesante. Las apariciones históricas son creativas y le agregan valor. El arte de por sí ya hace que valga la pena leerlo!

Dari judulnya saja sudah ketahuan ada apa dengan jilid ini. Persis seperti di novel The Family-nya Mario Puzo, demi keutuhan keluarga, bersatu kita teguh bercerai kita runtuh, maka Rodrigo meminta Cesare untuk menjadi lelaki pertama bagi sang adik, Lucrezia. Hal yang dilakukan kakak beradik itu dengan senang hati, disaksikan oleh sang ayah, dan kedua saudara laki-laki mereka, Giovanni dan Joffre.
Adegan malam pengantin Lucrezia dengan Giovanni Sforza, seperti juga dikisahkan dalam novel Mario Puzo, disaksikan beramai-ramai oleh Sang Paus dan teman-temannya, seperti layaknya menonton panggung teater. Hanya untuk membuktikan bahwa pernikahan keduanya sah, dan Lucrezia masih perawan (dengan bantuan darah palsu, tentunya).
Sekali lagi, komik ini bukan untuk anak-anak.

I saw this as a teenager and felt intrigued, like teenagers get intrigued at watching a HBO sex scene.

With the insane talents of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Milo Manara what do you expect except tits and ass, sex and brutality, love and murder. What you should not expect however is historical accuracy. While the big things are true, Rodrigo Borgia was Pope Alexander the VI, he had various children -Ceseare, Lucrezia, Gioffre (who may or may not have been a homosexual), and Giovanni - with possibly up to six others. He often married his children off for political gain, as was the custom of European monarchs. Lucrezia was married to Giovanni Sforza, however she was not forced to participate in the sexual act with witnesses until she was married to her second husband, I believe. Anything else in this story is the subject of rumor or has been fabricated for dramatic effect, especially the incest parts.
That is not to say this isn’t a good book. If you want a slice of sleazy romance and taboo sex set against the background of Renaissance Italy, when the Roman Catholic Church was at its most decadent, then climb aboard. The art is incredible, the story exploitative, and every woman is a slice of masturbatory heaven. The scenes of old Rome are loving reproduced, sometimes the architecture overwhelms the panel, distracting from the story. While the large panels of people in the streets of Rome is lake that of a Bruegel painting with all of the hidden naughty bits front and center.
This is second in a trilogy and opens just after Rodrigo Borgia has taken power as Supreme Pontiff. To secure the people's love, he fakes a satanic attack on a beloved family and frames a devoted servant for the attack. He then calls all of his illegitimate children to him and arranges for them to be placed in positions of power to cement not only his own power, but the possibility of creating a Borgia dynasty around the position of pope. Much evil is committed in the attempt to make this dream a reality.

O segundo volume da tetralogia faz um retrato da Igreja do Papa Alexandre VI (Rodrigo Bórgia). Um excelente estratega e político mas longe de ser o símbolo da religião cristã como a vemos hoje. O abuso de poder e a autoridade que tinham sobre o povo apresentava-se como um lugar que os poderosos queriam aceder. Um retrato cru da época.
Penso que este volume está melhor que o primeiro em termos de história. A qualidade dos desenhos de Manara mantém-se.

En lisant ces bd vous aurez la preuve que l'humain est quand perché.
Je n'ai rien de plus à dire par rapport à ma première revue sur le permier tome. L'histoire me plaît beaucoup ainsi que les dessins. Les personnages sont un peu perché si ce n'est beaucoup mais bon. Ce n'est pas non plus très véridique par rapport à ce qui s'est passé mais bon, soit.
Je vais lire la suite très prochainement.
