Good book

The second book in this series and I liked it as much as I did the first book. Good characters and fast paced.

I downloaded this on Kindle Unlimited

It's a couple of weeks after an EMP strike on New York, and the four survivors from the first book are settled in Lake Placid, a town 300 miles away from NYC. The tipping point has passed, and civilised society is on the slide. People divide into groups: those who run about like headless chickens and believe that the army/government will save them, the savvy survivors who see the danger ahead, and the baddies, who are hoping to cash in on others' desperation.

As before, the story is great. Elliot, the PTSD suffering ex-Marine stands out as the best character, and I very much liked the conflict between him and his old army friend Gary, now a police officer running the town, who doesn't see that he can't keep law and order and expect the townsfolk to pull together in the way that they might have in a lesser crisis. Meanwhile, Damon's ex-friend Cole and his drug-dealing and violent crew feature large in this book ~ I liked that Cole is the intelligent baddie, who sees ways of putting himself in control of both his town, Keene, and next door Lake Placid, that his more thuggish mates don't understand. It's pacy and eventful - all good....

....however, the lack of editing and proofreading still bothered me too much. Run-on sentences and missing commas galore, lazy grammar, and the strange appearance of an philosophical/practically instructive omniscient narrator now and again, when the author wants to make some point about human nature or describe how a gun works. These passages would have worked much better if they'd been part of Elliot's inner or spoken dialogue. There are actually a couple of semicolons in this book, but I think whoever put them in must have thought 'hey, what about that little bitty thing with the dot and the comma underneath? Don't I have to shove a couple of them somewhere?', closed their eyes and stuck them in randomly.

Jack Hunt obviously knows his survival and gun stuff, though not how women talk to each other - Jack, please know this now: no woman will tell her friend that her husband has come onto her unless she wants to get one over on her. Seriously. The potentially interesting Jesse and Maggie continued to fade into minor characterhood, having become attracted to each other (allegedly); other than that, they seem to serve no function apart from being the third character needed to drive a car, or to take a bullet so that Damon can talk about how to deal with gunshot wound. Talking of Damon, he has gained a long-term girlfriend in this book, who was never mentioned in the last...

....but, I still kind of liked it. If the books had been given a bit more spit and polish, and a proofread by someone who knows how to punctuate, I'd definitely download the next one. As it is, I probably won't, at least not for a while.

The story of Elliot and his friends continue, as we see the aftermath of the EMP.

This book was a definite disappointment for me. I found the first book to be ok. Not great, not bad, just ok. However, I really felt this next part of the story was lacking.

We're still in Lake Placid, 6 weeks after the EMP, and the town is falling apart. Friendships are strained and people aren't getting along well. As I predicted, the Damon/Elliot story line would complicate things, as the main antagonists from the first book were connected to Damon's friends in the next town over. And the book is split in 2 directions, Damon dealing with the fallout of that and Elliot and Gary dealing with a crumbling rule of law in the town.

What follows is an uninspired series of events that leads to "Red Shirts" being killed and old friends at odds.

I'm always leery of book 2's as they tend to be how things from book 1 are made as bad as possible before getting resolved in book 3. And this one was a lot of that.

Not bad enough to keep me away from book 3, but...well...just don't expect too much from this one.

"Days of Chaos" is the second book in Jack Hunt's EMP Survival series that follows Elliot, Jesse, Damon, and Maggie a couple of weeks after the events of the first book. And it did not disappoint.

The book's reading experience was just as easy and enjoyable the second time around. As Jack Hunt went more into the background of Damon's past as he dealt with trouble throughout. While other characters resumed their staple roles as they developed their mindsets in order to survive the chaos caused in the first book.

And while the book was enjoyable and filled with action; the only gripe I had was with a storyline arc dealing with Foster Goodman that I felt seemed unnecessary for the progression of the story. Other than distracting a reader's attention away from the main plot.

But other than that, "Days of Chaos" is a good sequel that makes me want to continue the series until I'm finished with it.

Book 2 in days of panic
Cole and his group in Keene trying to take control of town. Magnus, wants revenge for his cousins death in Lake Placid. Damon, Cole's "friend" makes his way back to Keene with Jesse and Maggie to get his girlfriend Sara out of town. Magnus kills her and it starts a small battle. Maggie ends up getting shot. Magnus kills Cole and storms Lake Placid. They all die at the hands of Elliot and his family/friends. But Mr. Thompson is killed and Elliots house is burned down. They still have the bunker. Jesse's dad Buddy and Amos head back to Keene. Rest stay in LP to try to survive. Side story was Goodman killing the Chief of Police in revenge for the coverup of his wife killing his son in a drunk driving accident. He recruits many but they all die.

A Pulse Pounding Second Book in the Series

Days of Chaos does not disappoint with non-stop action. New problems await the residents of Lake Placid. Damon returns to Keene and a show down looms with Cole and Magnus. Rayna confronts Jill but loses a friend. Elliot and Rayna become closer as all the danger makes them realize family is all important. Tensions boil over and chaos ensues but the ending is happily satisfying. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. This is well written with well defined characters the reader cares about.

Darn hard to put it down and get some work done. This was a continuation of Days of Fear. There is a third one but I'm not buying it until I have a little more work done. Our main characters are getting stronger by the day that goes by. Not any of it is easy but those who survive need to be strong and also try to keep their sense of being part of something else. We learned what caused the EMP but the United States isn't any closer to solving the problems of getting us back to at least where we were before the EMP so it is still every man or community for itself.

After an EMP brings down an airliner in the middle of Times Square on New Years, our band of survivors manages to escape the chaos of the city. With nowhere else to go, our mixed bag of survivors decides to go with Elliot as he travels to his home in Lake Placid. Elliot has had his own problems dealing with PTSD after Afghanistan, not having been home in the past year. Arrival of the disaster confirmed his decision to go home. All is not well in Lake Placid. The local criminal elements, Magnus and Cole have plans to take advantage of the chaotic situation to solidify their hold on Lake Placid and the surrounding communities. Elliot teams up with long-time friend, Gary who is a Sargent in the local police force. The two friends, along with Damon, Jessie, and Maggie who came with Elliot from New York square-off against Cole and Magnus. This adds another layer of difficulty to an already complicated situation. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next volume.

Good Series So Far.

First time reading anything like this. It's a very good series so far.

I find myself wondering if society would break down this fast. Still the scenarios in the book seem plausible . The series really makes you ask a lot of questions.

What would you do?

What happens when the usual order of things becomes disordered?

How far would you go to protect what's yours?

Definitely a thought provoking series. Look forward to the next book in the series.

A step down from the first in the series

Good storytelling and pacing, but:
Magnus never really gets developed as the bad guy.
Cole’s character is inconsistent.
People pop up from nowhere.
Author lacks both firearm (last book) and automobile knowledge. ‘49 vehicles with 4-speed manual transmissions do not have a “park” position for the gearshift and the wheels do not spin just by pressing the accelerator. You have to engage the clutch. Which you can’t do from outside the car.

This was a good second book in the series, but was less about the EMP and survival and more about conflict with thugs that had a prior unhappy history with the characters. There seemed to be building some conflict with the new mayor of Lake Placid which could have been interested but ended before it could progress. Also, Jill seemed pretty upset over not much really ever happening between Rayna and Gary, so perhaps the underlying issue there will surface in the next book.

A good and realistic read

I enjoyed this book as we get to know the characters better and their characters were revealed in the midst of death, danger and destruction. I think Mr. Hunt's story was realistic for a post EMP novel. I did get a little tired of the strong focus on the bad guy's thoughts and actions, wishing for more development of our heroes. He built good suspense near the end, as we sorry about Maggie. Overall it was a good read.

Great read

Thanks to Jack Hunt for another great read. I have read a few of these posts apocalyptic novels and Jack Hunt has done a very good job on this. The story line while being fiction is very plausible and gives one reason to think. He does a great job with the characters and their predicament. I have thoroughly enjoyed both books and look forward to the next in the series. Excuse me now while I go prepare my Bug out bag.

I liked this book, but not quite as much as the first. You can tell Mr. Hunt really knows his stuff when it comes to survival. There were a few grammatical issues, but nothing over the top. I really wish there would have been more character development. I feel like we only really got to know the top level of all of the characters, and so many of them have such great potential. I do plan to continue reading the series.

This book is quick to read and I was entertained

There a parts of this book that ring true and kept my attention. But somehow it's okay not exceptional. I hope Mr. Hunt becomes more seasoned and learns to keep elevating his game.
Since I am not a writer with concrete ways to improve his stories I rated it a four star read. I hope the series keeps getting better because I like to read great stories.I

Terrific Read

Horrifying to think about but knowing that this can happen at any time makes it worse. Are we as a nation, our big cities and smaller towns ready to survive an EMP bomb. Will our communities take care of each other or will we as some characters in this book turn on each other destroying whatever gets in the way? A lot to think about . Nightmares as we sleep.

Sooo tedious

Oh my god. The characters had no personality the author used phrases like “as her fist connected with his solar plexus...”
please spare yourself. I read the first one and it was ‘meh’... but this one was clearly written by ex military trying to prove he’s ex military. Obnoxious.

I thought this book was a lot darker than the other. There was very little hope registering. The author is a good wordcrafter, but I would like to see a story that is uplifting during those days of chaos. Also, I would like to see the dog, King, playing a much more active role in the families activities.

As good if not better than the first!

Wow, the excitement never stops. This book is a continuation of all the fast paced action of the first book. The characters get a bit more rounded out (at least some do) and there is a couple of new people to learn about. It's a really well written story with great characters and just a totally fun way to spend a few hours.

Hard to Believe it's only been 2 weeks since the collapse

Society fell quickly as the opportunists made their moves. Keeping a town safe and secure is a thankless and unrealistic job. Top it all off, it's winter and so very cold. Not exactly the way you would want to figure out how to survive in a reality without rules.

Good Read

I've read a couple of these EMP/SHTF novels, they are fast becoming a genre by themselves. This one was typical of the genre. It was well written and held my attention. I will probably continue on the series because the characters were well developed and you want to see what happens to them.

Good, but more firearms knowledge needed

Good story, but I found the timeline a little rushed, perhaps that's the way things would really be.
As a gun guy, the author definitely needs to brush up on his firearms knowledge - not every pistol is a Glock. There's hundreds of other brands - it was very tiresome.
But decent story.

Keeps you on the edge of your seat

Terrifying and exciting as you watch normal every day people lose their humanity or maybe it's the "real me" coming out. Reading about the strength and weaknesses of people still trying to provide for their own, keep their love ones safe while the world falls apart. Great job. Can't wait to read Book 3. Thank you.

Great book!

So often books is this genre are heavy on facts and almost as a side order, a simple story with basic characters is thrown in. Not so in this series. A believable and realistic plot, realistic characters with a story, and just the right amount of details to make it a solid survival story. Already downloaded the next two in the series.

Thrilling. A it of shooting.

Not much in the way of learning to survive except by killing of the bad guys. But the moral of the story was summarized in the last two sentences: 1. No one is an island; 2. A community is only as good as those who will sacrifice. Read and enjoy. In in to the next book.

Read these books!

You'll like his style, good storyline , and realistic situations. I appreciate that he can write about violence, without going for the shock value of gore. Anxiously looking forward to the third in this series!
