USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Rita Herron fell in love with books at the ripe age of eight when she read her first Trixie Belden mystery. Dr. Mila Manchester takes baby Izzy in due to the birth mother going into hiding to escape evil trafficker Arman DiSanti (who is the birth father). Things are fine for three years until Izzy is taken hostage by DiSanti in order to force Mila to perform plastic surgery on him so he can escape. He does escape, and Mila is arrested as an accessory. Due to her fears for Izzy's safety, she won't cooperate with authorities, which is when Brayden Hawk steps in as her lawyer as a favour to Charlotte, Mila's friend and also wife of Brayden's brother. They must figure out how to get Izzy back, despite the fact Mila is hiding Izzy's true parentage, and Brayden has trust issues with pretty women, because a female client once seduced and fooled him.
This was an extremely dumb story and probably deserves 2 stars, but I rounded it up because it was very fast-paced and had some suspenseful moments. I was very perplexed over the author's idea that once an arrested person's lawyer has stepped in, the authorities can refuse to let them speak to their client because they want to ask more questions! Has Herron never watched a cop show???
The romance did not work at all. At all. AT ALL. Brayden is distrustful of Mila for most of the book, and they hardly spend any time together. But at least he entertains notions of having some feelings for her. Mila, understandably perhaps, has her focus on getting her daughter back, but never once is described as having feelings for Brayden in return, until the ludicrous moment where she seduces him and has sex with him, DESPITE HER DAUGHTER STILL BEING KIDNAPPED. Heavens above, this trope sends me loopy. No one whose child has just been kidnapped would feel like having sex. Romance authors: GET THIS THROUGH YOUR SKULLS! It takes me right out of the story.
Another issue here is one that's similar to the previous book in the series. Mila and Brayden hardly spend any time together, because it's Brayden heading off with one of his brothers to investigate all the various leads, while Mila simply hangs out at home, or in the car, wringing her hands. Herron really has created some weak heroines for this mini-series. The climactic wrap-up is very swift, without Mila even being on scene. Good thing she says "I love you" to Brayden at the end, because I would have had no idea otherwise!
It's a lousy read if you're after romance, but if you can handle the extreme, well, dumbness of it all, this otherwise delivers some of the goods if you're after action and suspense.
4.5 Stars. Hideaway At Hawk's Landing is book #3 in the Badge of Justice series. This book really surprised me in a good way! It's an action packed and intriguing story about a human trafficking ring in Texas. Thanks to Harlequin for my paperback copy. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
This romantic suspense had plenty of action that moved right along but their relationship was not very believable really waffling with the trust issue. After awhile even the plot got rather convoluted and I started skimming. Dr. Mila's daughter is kidnapped and the doctor is put in a damaging position and attorney Brayden tries to help.
This is the third book in the series of Hawk's Landing. Its fast paced and its about a area that all people are comfortable with. In this book we meet Brayden Hawk who is the lawyer and also seems to be the caregiver in the family. We also meet Dr Mila Manchester who's speciality is plastic surgery. She is forced to do plastic surgery, on one if the most evil person ever known, at the threat of someone she cares about. It brings back characters from past stories and gives you and idea of what its like in the world of human trafficking. Its well written and well worth a read. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
I liked this story. It's hard to really enjoy a story with a lot of human trafficing in it. I bought this at a local library sale and I voluntarily chose to review it. I've given it a 4.5* rating. This is not for the under 18 readers due to the sex and the violence in it, partly the violence to women. This gives a lot to think about in women's issue's and it had a nice ending.
When The Head of a ruthless Human Trafficking Gang come to a Plastic Surgeon to have his face done and takes her child as leverage she has no choice but to do it. Only she has a bigger stake then any other player has in this fast pace read. It will take the Hawk's Family and her to save a little girls life and also the love of a very special Hawk's Lawyer.
