She’d just hoped he wouldn’t look so annoyingly dreamy when he did.
Andy Walker has spent twelve years raising her daughter on her own and working to restore her once perfect reputation. All she wants is stability and for the past to stay in the past. When her ex, the boy that walked out on her more than a decade ago shows up, she knows that all her carefully buried secrets stand to be uncovered.
Owen Monroe left home at eighteen and tried not to look back. Though the memories of the girl he’d planned to spend his life with haunted him, he swore he’d never forgive her. Until, that is, he finds out the truth about what really tore them apart.
Oh, and that she had his baby all those years ago. His daughter, Jenna.
Now it’s up to him to earn her trust back and he’s willing to go to any lengths to do it.
This is a full-length SECOND CHANCE novel with an HEA, featuring a SECRET BABY!
This is definitely in YA-ville, but for a second chance romance it was better than most, but still missing something.
A big and very ugly misunderstanding occurs that makes h and H hate and distrust each other. The consequences for the heroine were pretty dire.
It’s now twelve years later and the H is back in town and very unwelcome. Angst junkies will love the vitriol he tosses at the heroine, but he backtracks once he learns about the whole scenario and feels really guilty he didn’t step in when he saw her. The groveling and new father parenting begins.
I think there was just too much said and not shown about their past relationship and some things that don’t add up.
The other problem was the startup of the more interesting romance between the heroine’s little sister and the H’s charming best friend. The little sister has issues and torpedoes their relationship in a big, ugly way. Second book is about them. I feel compelled to read it, but I hate it when a formerly fun and fun-loving character gets damaged.
I honestly DNFed this book at like 80%. I will have a lot of spoilers in this.
I wasn’t a big fan of this one. Please check the trigger warnings before deciding to read the book.
I just had so many issues with Owen in general. And him and Andy.
He walked in on her being raped and just assumed she was cheating on him and left. Like he just assumed she was sleeping with someone else. Was mad she was cheating. Like you don’t question anything? You just close the door and leave? Not even just leave the party leave the town. I think maybe the country. It was really gross and left a really bad feeling in my gut. That’s not how you act when you love someone.
And the whole excuse of “he was a kid.” No. He was planning on marrying her. And he didn’t bother trying to figure out what was going on? He just left.
Plus she was drugged and had no memory of him being there. So she had no idea why he suddenly disappeared.
He was awful to Andy and just got let off the hook. Like he was so awful.
Also she was pregnant at the time of this happening. So when he finally makes his way back into town she has his child. And he’s pissed that she’s telling people the kid is his and he’s treating her like shit.
And then you see the kid and decides she looks like you and now your ready be a dad. Like Andy owes this man nothing, but he just acts like an ass. Then she comes to him and tries to tell him about their kids and he treats her so so badly. Like I don’t care if you think she cheated on you. How can you treat someone you say you loved that way? Not even like they’re a person like they’re trash.
He only finds out about the SA because one of his old friends comes and shows him the police report. That’s when he decides to stop treating her like dirt. And decides he wants her back. Excuse me? You never even gave her a chance to speak before insulting her.
Also instead of sitting down with Andy and having talk and figuring out how everything is going to work with the kid, he just shows up at one of her games. He makes them both who are very upset deal with with in public with the whole town watching. And he doesn’t even go to Andy first. He goes to Jenna and asks if they can all three go out together after her game. Like he thinks he just has a right to do that after everything?
The relationship with Jenna, the kid, was too easy. She just accepts him to quickly. It just didn’t seem realistic. Like kids know things. They’re not dumb. You can’t tell me she didn’t see how sad her mom was. And she’s just cool with the dude that made her mom feel like that?
It was all just too easy. Owen got let off the hook too fast. There was like no groveling. It did it make up for how he treated her.
And he doesn’t respect her boundaries at all. Like literally goes behind her back and gets info about her jobs from the kid and is just like “I’m sorry I’m still learning.” Fuck him. I am anti-Owen. I’m sorry.
I also am not personally a fan of the “she was broken and couldn’t be completely healed until she had you” type of thing in books.
Plus when he decides to show back up in town after years he goes to her family’s bar? Like he’s just not a likable person for me. There’s just too much for me to just look over. Once they got back together I really just couldn’t. I feel really bad not finished books, but I was not doing good while reading this one.
But I feel like this is all could just a me problem. Like I don’t think the writing was bad. It just wasn’t for me and I was heavily triggered the whole time so yeah. Like I feel really bad not liking it but I just didn’t. But I don’t want to make other people not read it just because I didn’t like it. But I feel like I need to be honest.
I forced myself to make it as far as 45%. I DNF'd after Andy, the oh-so-perfect and sanctimonious heroine, makes a particular remark to Owen. Owen is the hero and the poor slob that loves her. Andy is a harridan. She's made out like she's some saint to be revered - 'abandoned' by her boyfriend following a traumatic event, self-sacrificing, single mother, left all alone to raise her child. Yeah. Whatever. Cry me a river. First, it's a mother's job to raise a child she decides to bring into the world. Lots of us do it alone. Deal with it. Second, if she'd seen what he had that night, she would have believed the same thing he did. End of. She was in no distress when he walked into that room. Also, he was a kid.
Somehow, she's placed on a pedestal. But that poor guy returns home after serving his country for 12 years only to be skewered by the. Entire. Town. Hey, he was only out there protecting your small-minded lives at the potential cost of his own, but it's okay to treat him like a leper over something that is none of your business! And he has no clue what is going on. When he finds out and based on what he saw, he's furious and skeptical. What does Saint Andy do? Tells her kid her father doesn't want to meet her! What responsible parent pulls a passive-aggressive move like that before getting to the bottom of WHY Owen was so upset and clearing up the discrepancy? Then she goes one better when the guy sees his kid for the first time and tells him 'Stay away from my daughter.' Um, I'm sorry? Your daughter? His daughter too, lady, and you made NO attempt to inform him of her existence - which might be construed as you keeping a father from his child. I couldn't take any more of this garbage when Andy rips into Owen about parenting and manipulation. Pot, meet kettle.
I hated this story. I hated Andy using her kid as a weapon and her martyred/victim shtick and her panic attacks - which made no sense because she has no MEMORY. And WHY was a pregnant high school girl at a party with drinking and drugs in the first place? What was she going to do there and why was it Owen's fault that she was targeted? The plot of this story was just bad. The heroine was a hag, the hero started great but became weak. I hated t The book has multiple viewpoints and bad editing - including the frequent overuse, of commas in a very strange, and inaccurate fashion.
Lastly, the book isn't even about this couple, it's about two couples. Andy isn't a strong heroine. Too much was made over what happened to her and Owen was blamed for too much. My respect for him bottomed out when he rolled over and took it instead of asserting his rights and pointing out that she willfully kept him from knowing he had a child. She knew he was Navy. She could have at least tried. Instead of falling under her spell of sainthood, he should have called her on her crap. I didn't care to finish, even to see if she ever had to answer for anything. This is another 'writer' I'll give a pass in the future.
These secret babies’ plot is never done right IMO. And mothers ( I am a mother of 2 so I can say with authority) you are not a Saint, or heroine or some kind of royalty because you’re raising YOUR child. It’s your JOB. I don’t care if the father is never present. Don’t turn motherhoods into something that deserves a prize or an award. My mother raised my sister and I without my father and I never heard her complaining or making a martyr of herself.
This really hit the mark for the angst I was looking for and it was also an enjoyable story. I liked all of the characters we were introduced to and it was fun getting to see all of the secondary characters and how protective they were of Andy. The only thing I didn't enjoy much was how many POVs were put into this book. Even though it was written in third person it would switch to another character and there were more than a few scenes just about other characters that felt really unnecessary. Especially Andy's sister Beth and getting those scenes with her and Logan actually made me less excited to go and read their own book somehow.
This is my first book by this author. Second chance romance. This is such a good story. It is really emotional and quite sad in places. It's a second chance but due to certain events some things can never be put right. There is a possible trigger for some readers I will mention it at the end not to spoil if you don't want to know as the trigger is at the crux of the breakup. Owen returns to town after having left abruptly and he finds he has a daughter. He didn't know about her. I am not a fan of the father not being told about his child but the circumstances in this case are quite unique. She did try, not as hard as she could have but again it's understandable. It is gut wrenchingly sad, dealing with the missed years and the aftermath of events. Very well written.
Spoiler.***** Possible trigger rape. Drugged and raped several times, beaten.
During separation Hero looking at photos of his daughter's childhood, 'He wondered if the ones, where she was even younger—two or three, while Andy was taking her to the Science Museum, he was sleeping with some no-name waitress, just because he could.'
The heroine underwent a terrible ordeal and then was young and pregnant (it's the Hero's baby, she was pregnant before the rape) 'It had been years since she’d been with a man.'
Still loved this on a reread.

I read this one after I saw a recommendation on FB Second chance, seekrit baby plot H and h are high school sweethearts with plans to marry after graduation. During a party, H sees h with another guy and thinks she is cheating on him. He leaves that very night and has no contact with anyone in his hometown for the next 13 years. h meanwhile has a baby who is 12 when the H comes back. On his return H is fairly mean and nasty but finds himself being ostracized by the entire town; his friends mainly because he walked away and has no contact with them either It was refreshing to read about a teenaged girl who was not a complete brat to her mother. She seemed to be a fairly well adjusted child. There is a possible plot hole; why didn't h inform the H about her pregnancy; but its mentioned that while he had plans to join the navy, no one knows what he did so there are no attempts to track him down; doesn't he exist on social media? He finds out that h was drugged and raped; which he sees but assumes that she is cheating on him. So he is a nematode for not trusting the girl he was in love with but H does do a good job of beating himself over this himself so ..... All in all, this book ticked all the sticking points that normally stick out in second chance secret baby books. H's apology and grovel is fairly lengthy, h takes time to forgive him and her family takes their own time to forgive him, esp. her father and brother. I am taking one star away from the book as the author insisted on bundling in h's younger sister and H's best friend's story's beginning bits; I believe she writes their story later on in this series but h's sister (its hinted that she has her reasons) was an irritating and self-destructive character while the friend was a good guy; their story irritated me and I definitely won't be reading it. So one star taken away from my review.
This was a DNF at 43% for me. Just absolutely awful. What dumbass in their right mind would be that sweet and kind to a guy that walked away from her while she was being ra*p*ed and then disappeared for 12 years. All the while she went through the rape trials had her rapists released and raised a kid working 3 jobs. Screw that. He can reconnect with the kid during supervised visits with her Dad or Brother. I wouldn’t ever speak to the piece of shit again. Frankly he would probably have to go through the court system to even get any type of visitation. That kid doesn’t need that type of person in her life.

A one star review totally trashed the female character going on about the male characters service to country, how the female was totally at fault for not telling him about daughter while he was protecting country blah blah blah…. (Btw I have two sons in service but I would never have reacted to story like that because I can cruelly comprehend what I’m reading). Ummm did you read the book? After the male character abandoned the female character, his fiancé, the night of true high school graduation party he didn’t come back to town or talk to ANYONE for twelve years!!! And the night he left his fiancé was drugged and raped by two strangers. He walked in and assumed she was cheating. They had true love supposedly and he didn’t even question the situation? Yell? Nothing? He just walked seat went home packed up left while she was raped beaten left naked and injured badly and scarred and oh by the way she was pregnant when it happened and was going to tell him at their wedding…….. so this woman who was abandoned had no idea why went through survivors process of court conviction of assailants pregnancy birth raising her child and another reviewer blamed her??? The female character actually DID try to reach out to him SEVERAL times to his aunt and uncle and tiff then about the baby and they finally told her “don’t call back again he is too young for responsibilities????” But she isn’t????? So another horrible plot point…… his old high school friend who is a a cop now wants the male character to know about the rape (since idiot never heard and is being CRUEL to female character accusing her of horrible things including trying to trap him monetarily saying it isn’t his child and her doesn’t want to meet his daughter!!!!!!) brings him the rape case file to review including photos of her injuries while she was in underwear???????? Let’s him read case file?????? Wtf??????? The only reason I gave this two stars was for the female character……… worked 5 jobs to support her daughter when the father and his family turned their backs on her and her child!!!!!!! Then she rose above and not only allowed a relationship between father daughter but had been fostering good feelings from her daughter all those years. She was wayyyyyyy too nice and it seemed like everyone rolled over to forgive him for 1. Allowing her rape to continue to the point she was severely injured when her could have stopped it. 2. Abandoning her without a word 3. Abandoning entire town friends her family without a word 4. Treating her harshly upon his return with unforgivable words ughhh he is the worst male character but he ranks up there and shouldn’t have gotten off so easy.
Sorry not sorry. Les die Reihe natürlich nicht weiter.
The story was written well, just a bit too long and drawn out. I didn't care for Owen, I know what he thought that night but he didn't say anything when he open that door NOTHING, to unbelievable.......and Andy she was right to forgive him (you have to forgive in order to be forgiven) but I would not be able to have him in my life in a romantic way.....couldn't do it.
Really the only reason I’m giving it to you because I thought that you deserved a one or no rating at all was because how resilient she was in the aftermath of everything that happened.
I’m not talking about when he came back into their life 12 years later I’m talking about the following days and months after that one night.
Everything else was very disappointing to me and I’m a leave it like that.
This was an unplanned reread. I’d read it awhile ago but for some reason it didn’t pop as read. Probably a KU thing. Anyway, I didn’t like it any more this time. The writing style and voice are fine. I like most of the characters, but something doesn’t click.
So many times we see the heartache caused by miscommunication. So many times we see the hurt that just can’t be forgiven. So many times we carry the pain and never let it go...
Jenni M. Rose had written an absolutely lovely story where happiness can be found after heartache in, Forgiving History!
Both Andrea and Owen have the chance to grow their hearts and look beyond the hurts. They choose to love, and make all the sacrifices that are needed to move towards their own happiness.
This book was so welcome. It is peace through pain. It is joy through tears. It is learning what will make you happy and deciding to do everything you can to obtain it.
Nope. I went into this book with super high hopes. The H was a jackbutt and said evil evil things to her. The author had so much plot to work with- but we saw so very little of it. They never talk about the rape, the court hearings.... nothing.
And throwing in huge chunks of side character drama as focal points when they’ll eventually get their own book(s)- that’s a huge turn off for me.
Doubtful I’d recommend this book. The author didn’t work the storyline as well as she could have. What a shame.
Very well written, story had me hooked from the start. I loved the characters. It will be interesting to read how the story evolves with the characters, especially Beth and Logan.
I borrowed Forgiving History from the Kind Unlimited Program.
Andy and Owen planned to marry after high school until one night at a graduation party changed their lives in dramatic, tragic and unexpected ways. Owen thought he saw Andy cheating on him and left for the Navy and never returned until thirteen years later. Tragically Andy had been given a drug and was being raped so when she needed Andy the most he was gone. She was also expecting Andy's baby, and has spent the last thirteen years being the best mother she could to their daughter Jenna.
Owen and Andy face the truth and how to make being parents to Jenna as mature adults but the second chance they need is full of difficulties from interfering family, the towns' low opinion of Owen, giving Jenna the support she needs to get to know her Dad and to face the tragedy of their parting and finding a new life together. Forgiving History is a great second chance story with lots of sibling interference and emotional upsets. It is a great story and worth reading how Owen, the Navy hero faces his mistakes.
I saw a TiKToK video recommending this one to me. I’m so very glad I read it!! Can’t wait to read about the other characters in this series!! Give this one a try. I did!!
Andrea Walker thought she and Owen Monroe would be together forever, until he disappeared after their high school graduation party with no word of explanation to anyone. It's been thirteen years – years she’s spent trying to forget the anger and hurt at his betrayal and focus on raising her twelve-year-old daughter. Imagine her shock when Owen walks in to her family bar, after so much time and so many unanswered questions.
This is a book about colossal misunderstandings, life altering choices and heaping regrets, but also about the power of healing and the beauty of forgiveness. The author created a realistic small-town setting, where nosiness and gossip abound but people truly care for and support one another. The Walker siblings were endearing and loveable with their well-meaning interference, and I loved seeing Andy and Owen get their second chance at love.
*I reviewed this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.
Finding love early on and losing it over a misunderstanding is the plight of Andy and Owen. So sad but a second chance is available 13 years later. Owen has a daughter, Jenna, to meet that he didn't know existed. It is a story of putting pieces together and building a new future as a family and of love restored. They certainly have their share of challenges in the process. This story is beautifully written and it sure does give the reader all the feels. I was hooked in the first chapter and didn't want to put it down.
This book had me in tears and laughter. I loved it from start to finish! There are no words for me to describe how much I love Jenni M Rose's ability to convey feelings, none. She does it so masterfully and natural that I had a hard time putting it down for even a minute. Marvelous! If you like second-chance romance and secret babies, this is the one for you! I recommend it wholeheartedly.
This is my first book from Jenni Rose and it was amazing. I could not put it down, I was captivated from the very first paragraph. I was drawn to Andy and what happened to her and all the miscommunication between her and Owen. Then Owen finding out that Andy did have his daughter Jenna, who was so sweet and wanted to know her father. Because Andy out her child above everything else!! The second time they see each other... Andy is definitely a strong character and can't help but be in her corner... Forgiving History is beautifully written and definitely gives you the feels.
I found this book well written but upsetting. I just could not forgive Owen. Andy was raped, Owen leaves her believing she cheated on him, she finds out she is pregnant, accused of being a slut while going through her rape trial, her mom dies and Owen only returns after 12 years go by. 12 years!!! Add insult to injury and her own daughter criticizes her for not being with Owen. It all just rubbed me the wrong way...Owen wasn't really a bad guy but damn I didn't want him to be involved in this hea.

After Owen found out that he had a daughter and after he found out about Andi's rape, he still didn't do anything because he was a f#%king coward. All he did was sit around and feel sorry for himself until Logan forced him to try to make things right. And when he did finally go to see Andi, she let him back into her life far too easily.
