From the author of The Blind comes an electrifying story of deception, duplicity and suspense
Peter Caine, a cutthroat Manhattan defense attorney, is extremely adept at his job. On the surface, he is charming and handsome, but inside he is cold and heartless. A sociopath practically incapable of human emotions, he has no remorse when he fights to acquit murderers, pedophiles and rapists. When Charlie Doyle, the daughter of the Manhattan DA--and Peter's former lover--is murdered, Peter's world is quickly sent into a tailspin as the DA, a professional enemy of Peter's, embarks on a witch hunt to avenge his daughter's death, stopping at nothing to ensure Peter is found guilty of the murder.
Peter sets out to prove his innocence, and as he pieces together his defense, he finds that it's those closest to us who are capable of the greatest harm.

3.5* Peter Caine is a highly successful defense lawyer in New York.
Many would call him cutthroat, ruthless. But he wasn’t always this way. Once upon a time he was a kind and loving man. A man who fell in love and simply wanted to follow the noble path of his mentors to become the best lawyer he could be.
Careful what you wish for...
Told in two time lines: Then - Peter is just starting his rise. Falling in love and building his empire, on his climb to becoming the most feared and regarded defense attorney in NY. Now - Peter is on top of his game! As it often happens, Peter is so caught up in his own grand success, he fails to see or consider anyone around him. And that list is growing. His current wife, desperate for a child. His ex-wife who recently passed… and his son, lost and alone in his grief.
A.F. Brady has created a highly despicable character in Peter Caine that you’re just waiting and hoping will get what’s coming to him. Though this thriller moved at a slightly slower pace than I would have liked, I was totally engaged throughout and anxious to see where this author was going to take me. I’m always a sucker for characters that you love to hate!
A buddy read with Susanne!☃️
Thank you to NetGalley, Edelweiss and Harlequin Park Row for an ARC to read and review.
Peter is a high-powered attorney. He’s cold and he’s calculating. Getting ahead and being successful is all he cares about. Peter has been divorced from his ex-wife Julianne for quite a few years to the detriment of his teenage son Jamie, whom he gains custody of once Julianne passes away. He has been with his girlfriend Claire forever, though being faithful is not high on his list of priorities. He’s been stepping out on her with Charlie, the DA’s daughter for years and he doesn’t even care. Unfortunately for Peter, it’s about time he started caring as his life is about to become quite complicated and not, in a good way. Good thing lawyers know a thing or two about damage control!
“Once a Liar” is a twisty-turny suspense which I stayed up quite late to finish! My head was spinning round and round trying to discern who did what. I’ll be happy to report however, that my detective skills paid off in the end, as I guessed correctly.
This was another buddy read with Kaceey!
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin - Park Row and A.F. Brady for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Peter Caine is not a nice man. You may even call him a sociopath which is perfect, really, for his job as a Manhattan defense attorney. He doesn't lose a wink of sleep when he acquits murderers, rapists, and pedophiles. Success, wealth, and recognition are the only things that Peter cares about.
Peter has an ex-wife, Juliette, a teenage son, Jamie, a current live in girlfriend, Claire, and a secret lover, Charlotte.
What happens when, Charlotte, Peter's longtime on-again off again lover, the reason his first marriage dissolved, and the reason his current girlfriend has given him the ultimatum, it's me or it's her, is violently murdered?
When you've amassed so many enemies it's not surprising that eventually someone would have an ax to grind. For Peter that time has come!
This is one of those books that I enjoyed thoroughly but it wasn't exactly a page turner. A slow burn that I savored. I thought that Peter was portrayed as a perfectly despicable character that I truly loved to hate. I adored Claire and felt so sorry for Juliette and Jamie. The ending was just perfect! A.F. Brady is a talented writer that I plan to keep my eye on. 4 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley & Harlequin Trade Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Peter Caine is a defense attorney, working and living in Manhattan. The book opens with Peter attending the funeral of his ex-wife Juliette. After her death Peter is having to take in his teenage son Jamie, a lad he hasn’t really had anything to do with for the last 16 years of his life.
Peter lives with her girlfriend Claire and she and Jamie seem to hit it off. He also has been known to have affairs, including one that ended his marriage to Juliette after he had an affair with the DA’s Step-daughter Charlotte.
After a gala event brings Peter and Charlotte back together again, Claire gives him an ultimatum, but it’s not long before Charlotte is brutally murdered and all the evidence seems to point to Peter being the culprit. It’s now up to Peter to prove his innocence, but who would want to frame him? It’s a long line, so take a seat and enjoy the ride!
It’s not often I read a book where the main protagonist is a hateful, disrespectful and outright self-centred arse, but that is who Peter is. He wasn’t always this way but after working for Juliette’s father who was the same sort of man, he lost all empathy and only cared about money, winning and how he looked in others eyes.
The book is told in alternating chapters of Then and Now. The pace is quite slow which is not something I particularity like about a book, especially a thriller, but it worked for this one.
In case you have read the synopsis and wondering who Charlie is – I was thinking the same when I was reading the book – It is actually Charlotte, Charlie is the name Peter calls her.
The murder of Charlotte (Charlie) happens quite a way into the book giving you time to work out what type of man Peter is and was and his backstory. I can’t say I felt sorry for Peter being wrongly accused of someone’s murder – This was a man who spent his career getting murderers, rapists, etc off from their charges even though he knew most of them were guilty. He enjoyed the challenge.
The writing was superb and I was held to the pages at first waiting for the murder I knew was going to take place to occur and then waiting for Peter to put all the pieces together. If you like a good thriller and don’t mind them being slow and jumping back and forth in time then give this book a read.
Claire has been living in my house for eight years, but I still can’t fully acclimate to cohabitating with another human being with her own will and own needs… I still stumble over her things, crash into her when she stands between me and my destination and I can never remember how she takes her coffee.
I realize that I am lying to myself as much as I’m lying to everyone else. I’m not in control, and I see now that I never have been. I’ve just lied so much that I believe myself.
“You, sir—” he leans forward and bores a hole in my face with his penetrating eyes “— have a monster inside of you. The only question is, can you keep it contained? That is up to you and you alone.”
My Review:
I was enthralled by this deviously clever tale of Peter Caine, a highly successful and brilliant criminal defense attorney who had become as contemptible and loathsome as the wealthy yet repulsive criminals he represented. Peter didn’t start out that way but had become morally bankrupt, a prolific liar, a social fraud, a manipulative and narcissistic sociopath, and an atrocious human being. He had callously abandoned his child and avoided having any type of relationship with him, seeing his mere existence as a nuisance until deciding that taking custody of his motherless child would be good for his image. He put on a performance when required in public but he had long ago buried his emotional self and selfishly found human interactions to be an arduous waste of his energy. But was he a murderer? I couldn’t decide, but I really didn’t think so as he seemed too arrogant and emotionally lazy to have committed such a passionate act, although… he might well have if he felt his well-crafted persona was threatened.
Peter was despicable and I despised him, deeply; yet the wily wordsmith known as A. F. Brady wove such a beguiling tale I was incapable of putting my Kindle down. Her word voodoo was far too strong. I was captivated, too invested, hopelessly intrigued, and deeply engrossed. I couldn’t tear myself away from this cunningly contrived story and read it in a day. The storylines were adroitly plotted, insidiously sly, and quickly sucked me into the vile vortex of Peter’s inner musings. I don’t believe I even took a full breath until the last page. It was wicked good!
If you love reading books where the main character is one you just love to hate, Once a Liar by A.F. Brady is going to be worth checking out ASAP!
What it's about: Peter Caine is calculated, cold, and distant... and he is also one of the best criminal defense attorneys in New York. His company that he started with his ex-wife's dad is doing great, he has a live-in girlfriend that he's been with for years, more money that he knows what to do with, and a son from his first marriage he never sees (he didn't really want to be a dad anyway). But then his ex-wife dies leaving his son Jamie in his care, and on top of that, Charlie Doyle who is the daughter of the DA that has been trying to get Peter to work for him is murdered. And all signs point to him . . . While Peter tries to prove his innocence his past will come back to haunt him, and he will learn that you can't always trust the people close to you.
I have to preface this review by saying that Peter is a monster and it might make you need to read this book in small doses. Everything is told in first-person from his POV, and man is it a doozy. He used to be a good person but his ex-wife's dad and being a criminal defense attorney in NY really changed him and made him a despicable person. He has no empathy and he treats everyone like crap. If you can't handle reading from a POV like that it will be very hard to read. That being said, Brady has SKILL. She really made me hate Peter with a passion, and any author that can make that so real to the reader and evoke the kind of emotions I had while reading this is amazing in my opinion.
There were a lot of surprises and things I didn't see coming in Once a Liar. While there was one thing I probably should have seen coming, I still didn't fully realize what was going on until the end of the book. This is also a pretty fast read that could easily be read in one day if you can stand Peter for that long. It has almost 400 pages but I still read it in just over 5 hours, and I'm a slower reader.
Final Thought: I think that the synopsis for Once a Liar isn't the greatest. The story is a pretty slow burn and you don't even really get to the mystery until a good halfway in. Most of the beginning is the story of Peter's start with his ex-wife and the start of the company he started with her dad, but it also jumps to present and talks about his relationship with his live in girlfriend and his son. I would say this book is more character oriented than mystery oriented, but that didn't stop me from wanting to know how it all ended. I now officially can't wait to read The Blind and anything else Brady writes!
NOTE: I received a copy of this book for free as part of the brand ambassador program with The Book Drop https://www.thebookdrop.com/ and all opinions are my own.
Peter Caine is a defense attorney living in New York—representing murderers, rapists, and other low life scum, for a price. His reputation and success is known throughout the city, and he's paid quite handsomely for it. From a small town boy with humble beginnings, Peter has shaped his life to be the one he's always dreamed about, but it has taken a toll on his livelihood. As his success and financial gain grew, so did his mental stability. Peter has created enemies everywhere, and it comes back to haunt him when a former flame, Charlotte Doyle, has been found murdered. Claiming his innocence, Peter is trying to uncover the culprit of this crime—who is framing Peter Caine?
Once a Liar is interesting to me because it follows the point of view of a sociopath defense attorney, who is immediately unlikable, but is so interesting and multifaceted that you just can't wait to see what he says next. I couldn't help but at times feel for the struggles that Peter went through during his journey for success. He is a dark character, but also one that you can clearly see has had a lot of pain to get where he is today. The author, A.F. Brady, is a licensed mental health psychotherapist, and you can definitely see that her experience has allowed her to shape Peter's psyche just perfectly for our enjoyment. It really is a clever feat to portay a character so realistically—you really feel like you're in the mind of a mentally unhinged, evil, cruel human being. This book is truly unputdownable if you're looking for a character study.
I was slightly disappointed in Once a Liar because I had high hopes for it's originality. Once I started the story, I was completely engrossed in the plot. It seemed like an original thriller that was reminiscent of Kaira Rouda's Best Day Ever, but I was definitely misled at some points in the story. The initial interest in Once a Liar faded as I ventured through the story, because the central conflict didn't even come to fruition until I was almost 70% done with the novel. My interest peaked in the very beginning of the story, but by the end I was just exhausted.
All-in-all, I would recommend Once a Liar is you want a slower paced novel, an unreliable narrator, but also a light mystery that won't scare you up at night. I'm definitely curious to see what AF Brady has up her sleeve in the future.
Once a Liar was an enjoyable mystery/thriller-solid 4 stars. The book centers around Peter, a defense attorney and one of the most unlikeable characters I have ever read. Peter is all about his career and himself but he is forced to to take a hard look at himself when his life suddenly changes for the worse. When Peter’s ex-wife passes away, he finds himself taking on the role as father to his son Jamie-a teenager he barely knows or wants to get to know. Added to the new pressure of fatherhood, Peter is thrown into the limelight when Charlotte, a woman he was having an affair with while he was married and later with his live-in girlfriend, was found stabbed to death. Charlotte also happens to be the DA’s step-daughter, the same DA that Peter hated and later threatened. Peter lands himself as the number one suspect in her murder. Once a Liar is full of twists and turns and that ending! Highly recommend to fans of mystery/thriller books.
What should I say to describe this book? The main character was a horrible man, but you don’t have to like the characters. My problem was the unlikely ending, and it’s hard to say why without spoiling it. But, when it came to the murder suspects, the most likely solutions were never mentioned. I was surprised at the end, but still found the former point irritating.
Peter Caine is a merciless Manhattan defense attorney who may seem to be charming on the outside. However, beneath the mask, he is a cold and heartless man who doesn't care about other people's feelings. He doesn't even harbor any feelings for his own son Jamie, and he is less than pleased when he has to take him in after Peter's ex-wife dies. But, his life will change dramatically when his ex-lover, the daughter of the Manhattan DA is murdered and Peter is one of the suspects.
At the funeral of his ex-wife, the protagonist is revealed as a narcistic defense attorney who is only interested in transactional relationships. Then his lover is found murder and the mystery unfolds as the tension mounts. Whilst the first twist clue was somewhat apparent, the double twist not so much so - reader beware. Based on a despicable character, a well written psychological thriller with a four and a half star rating
Short Summary Suspenseful and edgy. After I hit the half-way mark, I DID NOT want to put it down!
My thoughts This book definitely makes you think about the consequences of your actions and the way you treat your family. If you love thrillers and haven’t read A.F. Brady, you need to read this book...I can’t praise her writing enough!
Although it wasn’t immediately unputdownable, once I settled in a little, it quickly picked up the pace!
It switches back and forth between “Then” and “Now”, going into depth about Peter Caine—the MC accused of murder. I love AND hate this way of storytelling. In a well-written book, it’s easy to follow and suspenseful. But on the other hand, the author builds up tension and you’re left hanging at the end of the chapter...ugh! It makes it very hard to find a stopping place. I’m constantly telling myself “just one more chapter”.
There are so many words to describe Peter Caine—liar, narcissist, heartless, callous, ruthless...I could go on, but I’m sure you get the picture!
It’s hard to feel any empathy for Peter. We see the cold and uncaring side of his personality that he tries to disguise. He’s a self-centered, egomaniac who thinks only of himself. Most of the characters—which are tangled and intertwined in lies and deception—are unlikable. The kind you love to hate!
Likes After getting into Peter’s head—listening to his thoughts, observations and his inflated ego—I was thrilled to see his perfectly controlled life start to crumble. Such Karma!
Dislikes I don’t think there was anything I disliked about this book!
Recommend:YES!

Book Blurb In this electrifying psychological thriller, a high-powered sociopath meets his reckoning when he’s accused of the brutal murder of his mistress.
Did he kill Charlie Doyle? And if he didn’t…who did?
Peter Caine, a cutthroat Manhattan defense attorney, worked ruthlessly to become the best at his job. On the surface, he is charming and handsome, but inside he is cold and heartless. He fights without remorse to acquit murderers, pedophiles and rapists.
When Charlie Doyle, the daughter of the Manhattan DA—and Peter’s former lover—is murdered, Peter’s world is quickly sent into a tailspin. He becomes the prime suspect as the DA, a professional enemy of Peter’s, embarks on a witch hunt to avenge his daughter’s death, stopping at nothing to ensure Peter is found guilty of the murder.
In the challenge of his career and his life, Peter races against the clock to prove his innocence. As the evidence mounts against him, he’s forced to begin unraveling his own dark web of lies and confront the sins of his past. But the truth of who killed Charlie Doyle is more twisted and sinister than anyone could have imagined…
This flips back and forth between Then and Now, then follows Peter as he begins his career and adult life and now is after Charlie is murdered and he becomes the prime suspect. Sometimes I get annoyed when a book alternates timelines but this time I enjoyed it. Almost every chapter ended with some sort of revelation or small twist and this tactic only served to propel me forward faster to get back to what I had just left behind. Both timelines were equally engrossing and I really didn’t prefer one over the other, I was invested in both.
If you enjoy reading books with characters that you love to hate you have got to check this one out! There is something so fun about reading about a ruthlessly unapologetic person and Peter was absolutely despicable but SO entertaining. He reminded me a lot of Paul from Best Day Ever, there was a hint of that same dark humor which is a huge plus for me as well, so if you liked that book definitely add this one.
I did see one part of the big reveal coming slightly ahead of time but then there was another little twist that I hadn’t anticipated and that really made this one a solid read for me. The ending itself was satisfying as well, overall a very well executed mystery.
Once A Liar in three words: Duplicitous, Unexpected and Skillful.
Political and Judicial Corruption. Power. Sex. Money..... What does it all add up to? You guessed it. MURDER
When Jamie breaks down talking about how quickly his mother turned for the worse, I carefully observe the reactions from the crowd. I file these looks away in my brain for reference in the future. I wouldn’t have to pay such close attention if only I could still conjure these emotions naturally. But I haven’t felt remorse, I haven’t felt sympathy and I haven’t shed a genuine tear in as long as I can remember. The other two speeches are delivered by two of Juliette’s childhood friends. I listen to the adulation and respect in the stories they tell; I laugh when the crowd laughs and bow my head when the crowd cries, just like I’m supposed to. When the pallbearers lift Juliette’s coffin and Louis Armstrong plays, I pull out of Claire’s grasp and escort my son down the aisle, closely following his mother’s body. Juliette wasn’t the first to die, and she wouldn’t be the last.

Once a Liar by A.F. Brady is a crafty, devious, sinister, and intriguing story that captured my attention right away and didn't let go. Loaded with unscrupulous and deceitful characters, most of whom have no qualms about stepping on anyone and everyone who gets in the way of their quest to get to the very top of their profession makes for an authentic storyline that fit the theme of judicial corruption perfectly. As intended, Brady had me loathing Peter Caine immediately and I really wanted something bad to happen to him! I wanted him to be guilty of the murder of Charlie Doyle but, of course, that would be too easy wouldn't it. Then again.....
This is a different crime thriller then I usually read as I generally steer clear of political storylines but I had no difficulty enjoying this novel from start to finish! Recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley, A.F. Brady, and Park Row Publishing for giving me an advanced, uncorrected digital copy to read and review.
Peter Craine, a successful Manhattan defense attorney...whose is hiding much more then his clients wrongdoings, gets accused of murdering the popular District Attorney’s step daughter. Craine has never been looked at as favorable in the public eye...(shocker—most defense attorney’s are not). But, the disdain for Peter Craine is not due to the scumbags he defends... he is rigid, unemotional and a deadbeat dad. Craine soon finds his personal and professional world’s -he has worked so hard to compartmentalism-collide and everything starts breaking apart. This is a fast paced thriller that bounces from past to present. I could not put it down! 4-stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have to figure out what to say, because I don't want to say something and then inadvertently tell you how it goes.
Peter Cain is a lair. How can you believe anything he says. He is a defense lawyer, in fact one of the best. On the outside he acts as though he is the most charming person. He is handsome, as well. But on the inside he is cruel, cold and heartless.
He used to be different, but he changed when he started work as a defense lawyer. Everyone in his life, he has treated badly. His ex-wife told him he would become this way. His son he doesn't even know, well. He uses people in a way that benefits him.
Charlie Doyle is his on again off again girlfriend. She's the daughter of the DA. Trying to rise up in society. When she is found murder, Peter becomes the prime suspect.
In the challenge of his lifetime, Peter races against a clock to prove his innocence. Evidence mounts up against him. He knows he is innocent, but proving it is something else. After all, he is a lair, who will believe him?
The chapters go back and forth between the present and the past. Escalating to an ending that will have your jaw dropping. Happy Reading 😊
I received a copy of this book from the publishers, in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting perspective, quite a fun twist at the end, but slightly laboured at times.
I was expecting this to be a fairly standard, enjoyable suspense /thriller. Although the author did take a slightly different approach (always welcome), that was pretty much what I got - a solid, well-paced novel that sits well with its genre.
Plot
Peter is a cut-throat lawyer, but he wasn't always that way. When he first met Juliette, he was a troubled young man, fleeing a dark past. Then he got tangled up with his career and became a cold, uncaring man.
Juliette dies and Jamie, Peter's son, comes to live with him and his girlfriend, Claire. Except Peter has some secrets, and he'd rather that his son didn't find out about them, especially when someone gets killed...
My review
Firstly, and most positively, it was refreshing to hear a narrative from a sociopath. The text was slightly laboured at points (which made me question whether this was actually a 'true' depiction of a sociopath or just what the author thinks one is like), but for the most part, it made for a very welcome change.
Peter is irredeemable and unlikable, but that's actually a vital aspect of the story, as it ensures you feel zero pity for him as the story plays out.
I liked the set-up as well; this brutal, unfeeling legal world, with plenty of cold high-society characters. It was engaging, and it definitely made me want to explore it more. Likewise, I didn't see the end coming, which is always fun! A nice ending, and satisfying to boot. Like I said, this dude had it coming.
There were points when I felt the narrative became slightly lacklustre, and this made my attention wane a little; but for the most part, I enjoyed it.
This psychological thriller was intricately plotted and had an interesting premise. However, the journey through the book felt labored and I couldn’t connect with the main character Peter Caine. The author tries to make the case that sociopaths can be created through life experience instead of just being born that way. I was not won over to that view because Peter was portrayed inconsistently. Some readers may be able to let go and just enjoy the plot of the book. I couldn’t quite get there with this book and was left feeling unsettled and depressed after reading it. Thanks to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing, and the author A.F. Brady for an advanced electronic review copy.
A tale as old as time.... man from a bad childhood wants to make it big so he leaves his old life completely behind, works hard, loses any goodness he has while building the perfect life he so desperately seeks - at any cost. Beautiful, successful wife who he grows bored with, enter mistress and the affair that will eventually end on a multitude of levels. Bye wife, enter girlfriend, who he also grows bored with but it looks better professionally to have this perfect little world than to not and he's nothing if not for keeping up appearances. And his son? Another byproduct of a life he doesn't really want and tries to ignore. He's a true winner, isn't he?
A narcissistic sociopath through and through, this is the type of character I loathe and yet love to be inside the head of. I think people will consider him to be a little bit of unreliable narrator but I find him to be completely reliable in his selfishness and emotionless state of being. There's nothing surprising in how he acts, what he does and how this eventually plays out. I was surprised at the end and honestly, I'm really happy with that ending.
My issues with the book was that the pacing of the back and forth from past to present seemed a bit repetitive and we really didn't get anywhere till the last quarter of the book. Maybe we needed all that build up to realize what a douchenozzle Peter really is... or maybe it could've condensed or played a little bit differently to make a bit more convoluted and twisty. Then again, all of this makes Peter all too real.
It's true - sometimes you only see what you want, but if you look close enough, you'll always find that other person lurking under someone's skin. We all have our roles, but we all have out blinders. Careful out there, folks! ;)
Thank you to TLC Book Tours and Park Row Books for this review copy.
Sociopaths live among us, and most of the time we don’t know who they are, and this is what ONCE A LIAR is all about. This is not a gory tale of serial killers, of psychopaths, but of people almost, almost like you and me. ONCE A LIAR is an extremely well-crafted story that will keep you guessing until the very end, because I certainly had no idea how it would turn out. The author knows what she’s talking about, she doesn’t fabricate; the writing is clear and smooth; the characters are fascinating, if not the sort of people you wish to know. But then again, we might know someone just like them.
Because it is written in such a deceptive and matter-of-fact way, I feared that ONCE A LIAR might end sloppily, but seldom have I been caught so unawares. Told in the first person, from our very unreliable narrator Peter Caine, the narrative alternates between Now and Then. Don’t blink, don’t skip a chapter, don’t think that something doesn’t matter, because it will eventually. “Good things come to those who wait” has never been truer! Who needs boring old serial killers when sociopaths are so much more interesting! ONCE A LIAR was the book I was hoping to read, and it delivered mightily! Enjoy!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Excellent characters, brilliant read. I looked forward to Brady’s second book and it didn’t disappoint. I love the insight into a hotshot New York lawyer's life and how some people can carried away with status and notoriety. I didn't see the ending coming and once it did I had to call someone to talk about it! Exhilarating. Loved it and highly recommend.
Excellent story! The writing was fast-paced and enthralling. Even though I knew how it would end [who did it] I couldn't put it down. This book can make you rethink how you interact with your fellow human beings. Relationships are far more important than we realize.
While this novel is very well-written, I found it a bit difficult to get into it simply because none of the characters are likable. The main character, Peter Caine, and his boss are both sociopaths (and generally proud of it). Peter's love interests are clingy, desperate, and needy. However, the story is interesting and I did want to find out what happened. I was able to figure out the ending pretty early - in fact, I thought the "whodunit" was pretty obvious - but I still wanted to see how the story unraveled and how it impacted the various characters.
I was lucky enough to win a uncorrected copy. Thank you A.F Brandy! 😁
I could not put this down! Peter is a defense attorney and unbeatable at his job. He never fails, he does not allow it it is who he has trained himself to be. Can he prove his innocence against a former lover?
Hooked from the beginning and the end .... totally unexpected!! Highly recommend if you are looking for an intense , pshychological thriller that you won't want to put down.
Thank you #netgalley and #HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing (U.S. & Canada) for the eARC.
3.5 Stars rounded down This is a hard book to rate. It does extremely well in some areas and not so much in others. It is the kind of book that is fascinating yet not too hard to put down. It starts at a good pace and is engrossing but then it quickly slows its pace and that does not help, also I did figure it out so that made it slightly predictable. The timeline of Peter’s life is a little messy so it takes effort to keep track of it. Other than that it’s fantastic. Peter is evil, unreliable, and cruel. He is a high functioning sociopath in my opinion. He has so many multiple facets to his personality that it is exhausting to read his story. There is so much fabrication and pretense with this character that it is hard to know what is the truth! I did not quite understand why any of the women in his life put up with him, he has no redeeming qualities in my opinion. He fits the image of a greedy, cunning and mean-spirited DA completely. This is a disturbing novel and I rate it a 4 only because of how much it made me feel! Thank you NetGalley and HARLEQUIN for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. #NetGalley, #OnceALiar You can find my reviews on romasharma.blogspot.com
4.5 stars. Peter Caine is successful high powered Manhattan defensive attorney. He uses cut-throat tactics, is a repeat adulterer and appears to be a sociopath. After the death of his ex-wife Jillian, he, along with live in partner Claire, assume custody of his 16 year-old son Jamie. Soon after, Peter's on again-off again lover is brutally stabbed to death with all circumstantial evidence pointing to him. This is a fast paced thriller with one of the most unlikeable characters in suspense novels similar to Nick from Gone Girl and Jack from Behind Closed Doors.
