‘Listen to your Inner Self. Learn all you can. Live in the moment. Love yourself.’

Australian author Cheralyn Darcey is an Environmental Artist, Author and Botanical Explorer who has a passion for encouraging us to reconnect with Nature. She has travelled, researched and explored the cultures and histories from all times, places and beliefs and the connections humans have developed, not only the usage of plants but also the spiritual qualities of plants. Uniquely in the Mind Body Spirit genre, Cheralyn illustrates her own publications with her field sketches and her fine art works and through this brings us a very complete, pure and rich resource and reference. She has stated, ‘creating works that encourage others to look a little deeper at what is already here, encourages a greater care and understanding of our Earth and ourselves’

THE BOOK OF FLOWER SPELLS is exactly that –‘ No matter what path we are on, what our beliefs are, what our background is, where we live or what we do, plants are our constant companions. Even in the busiest city, you will not need to go far to share space with a plant of some kind; you will not need to look far to experience their benefits. They decorate our lives, provide oxygen, food, shelter, tools, medicines and inspiration, both emotional and spiritual, through our interactions with them. Welcome to a book of living magickally with flowers. My passion is teaching and sharing the things I love and I’ve long wanted to create a book that anyone can use, no matter what their level of experience. Before we even begin, though, I want to make sure that you understand flowers and how to respectfully use them to create real magick. Flowers are the reproductive organs of a plant and, as such, they are emotional in nature. They attract pollinators in a variety of ways, including using their looks, fragrance and texture as well as their energy. Along with their physical attributes, this energy is how we can connect with flowers to share their magick. Flowers illicit an emotional response from us, which connects us directly to their energy and, in doing so, makes them more desirable. We will acquire, tend, protect and assist what pleases or seems to help us, and this ensures the flowers’ continuance. The term ‘ethnobotany’ further describes the relationship between people and plants and it is my life work. I have found ethnobotany fascinating as well as incredibly rewarding to understand – the never-ending layers of connections we share with plants and how we can both benefit when working with respect and care, in harmony. To discover what the individual energy of each flower is, we look at the way it behaves, its appearance, the things it provides. Lavender, for example, produces a fragrance that is naturally calming and cleansing. The colour indicates restfulness, and even the soft texture of the leaves and flowers leads us to a certain understanding of the energy of this plant. A large part of my research includes botanical history, folklore and magick. This research, along with my upbringing in a Pagan family, has resulted in me creating and accumulating a very large collection of spells, rituals and blessings, which I have always found great benefit from. I am so delighted to share some of this knowledge with you in this special collection of flower spells. Because I am dedicated to ensuring that botanical knowledge and the language of nature is not lost, I have also written this book in a way that will assist you in understanding why each flower is included. Magick and the language of nature are not things you need to find; they are within you already, but you have simply forgotten how to access them. With this book I hope to help you remember.’

Cheralyn divides her flower spells in collections – Relationships and love; Happiness and harmony; Success and prosperity; Protection and clearing; Health and healing; and Transition and change.
In sharing how she achieves her spells Cheralyn speaks of each flower, the times when the spell should be cast, finding and gathering the elements needed, and how to create and spell – words, utensils, and the target of the spell – when to use it and how. Along with each spell are beautiful artworks of plants and herbs, page design, and added tidbits of information about the flowers being used.

A journey into the mystical is within reach. Follow Cheralyn’s book and spirit and sense the changes. The book is an artistic treasure and an invitation to explore the mysteries of the universe through plants.

Full of an abundance of different types of flowers and Shirley Barber-like illustrations, The Book of Flower Spells by Cheralyn Darcey is a wonderful collection of spells that involve using flowers for beginners and intermediate practitioners alike. In comparison to other spell books that exist, this one is not fluff and gets straight to the point of teaching you how to magically use flowers. It teaches you how spells work in general and then provides 60 unique flower spells to perform and inspire your own magical practice.

However, this book is lacking an index, so it is difficult to find certain spells or flowers without flicking through pages randomly. My biggest critique of this book is that these flowers are not easily found without extra effort for the average person who doesn't grow or buy flowers, so the main audience for this spell book is probably people who already cultivate flowers and practice witchcraft and that makes this spell book less accessible. There could definitely be more information provided about growing flowers and drying flowers. Overall, this is the only good flower spell book I've found, so it's easier to ignore its flaws. I do see myself using these spells and so I do recommend this spell book if you know where to get your flowers.
