Bigfoot Nation: The History of Sasquatch in North America

Rate this book
Childress takes a deep look at Bigfoot Nation--the seemingly real world of bigfoot around us in the United States and Canada. Whether real or imagined, bigfoot has made his way into the American psyche cannot be denied. He appears in television commercials, movies, and on roadside billboards. In fact, bigfoot is everywhere, with actors portraying him in variously believable performances and it has become the popular notion that bigfoot is both dangerous and horny. Indeed, bigfoot is out there stalking lover's lanes and is even more lonely than those frightened teenagers that he sometimes interrupts. Bigfoot, tall and strong as he is, makes a poor leading man in the movie with his awkward personality and typically anti-social behavior. He doesn't care a skunk's gland how many movies or commercials are made about him without any royalties whatsoever. To him, Bigfoot Nation is all about style, a lifestyle--shall we say--that keeps bigfoot on the fringes of society, gently creeping into our dreams. Join David on a wild ride from the very first bigfoot reports in the 1800s to right now. Chapters include: 1800 to 1899: The Wildmen of the Frontier; The Oldest Bigfoot Photo; 1900 to 1940: The Pre-War Years; 1950 to 1990: The Post-War Years; The Skunk Apes of Swamp Nation; Missing Hunters & Berry Pickers; Bigfoot in New Mexico and Arizona; 2000 to 2020: Post-Millennial Bigfoot, more. Includes 16-pages of color photos that document Bigfoot Nation!

David Hatcher Childress (born 1957) is an American author and publisher of books on topics in alternative history and historical revisionism. His works often cover such subjects as pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact, the Knights Templar, lost cities and vimana aircraft. Despite his public involvement in the general field of study, Childress claims to have no academic credentials as a professional archaeologist.

Born in France, and raised in Colorado, Childress began his world travels at age nineteen in pursuit of his archaeological interests. In 1983 Childress relocated to Stelle, Illinois, a community founded by New Age writer Richard Kieninger, after Childress was given a book authored by Kieninger while touring Africa. Childress chronicled his explorations in his Lost Cities and Ancient Mysteries series of books, whose core concepts were influenced by the ideas of Kieninger.

While residing in Stelle, Childress began self publishing his own works and later other authors, which focus on presenting fringe scientific theories regarding ancient civilizations and little-known technologies, as well as establishing a travel business in partnership with Kieninger. In 1991, in the nearby town of Kempton, Illinois, Childress, along with historian and linguist Carl W. Hart, founded the World Explorers Club, a group that often travels to the places he writes about, and an affiliated magazine, World Explorer.

David Hatcher Childress has appeared on several television programs on NBC ("The Mysterious Origins of Man"), Fox Network (Sightings and Encounters), Discovery Channel, A&E, The History Channel, as a commentator on subjects such as the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis, and UFOs.

Childress has been involved in two lawsuits regarding his publishing activities, one of which failed due to the expiry of a statute of limitations and the other, involving his company's publication of a master's thesis without permission, which was settled out of court.

A chronicling of Big foot sightings in the USA. The author provides an exhaustive account of what appears to be all of the reported Bigfoot encounters along with photographs and drawings. Many of the pics are hard to see, whether it's because of poor camera work or poor reproduction of photos for the book. The author adds some brief commentary, more along the lines of punchy phrases and quips but not any real analysis.

This book is essentially account after account after account of what witnesses reported. It's pretty heavy reading and after a dozen or so accounts gets somewhat tedious to digest. For the previously mentioned reasons it took me quite some time to finish the book. I skimmed my way through much of the last half of the book as the material began to seem repetitive.

If you think Bigfoot is out there, reading through this book will confirm your suspicions before you've even read all the stories.

Lately I’ve had an obsession with Bigfoot, the big hairy giant, who supposedly lives in the north western part of the United States of America the areas that would be included in his roaming territory or Washington state, Oregon and parts of Northern California however, Bigfoot or Bigfoot like creatures have been observed all over the entire company of the United States of America, and even other parts of the world Some state as a species that came before humanity. Some people say they’re connected with aliens as they are often observed near orbs of light or near UFO sightings. I would make a rough comparison between this book and the other one by David Pauly‘s both of these books give you stories about people who have sided Bigfoot or I’ve seen the big man David Childress is booked the one I’m reviewing right now seems to have more stories about people who have observed Bigfoot the other book by David Pauly’s on the other hand, had a bunch of stories, but it also gave a little bit of factual information about what was learned about the Bigfoot in this book. I learned that older Bigfoot, especially older males, get driven from the family or pack by younger males who overcome them in battle, which is why you see some gray haired Bigfoot dumpster diving in civilization, trying to get a little bit of food by learn Bigfoot run away from people. The book title is called Bigfoot nation for a reason first off. It recognizes that the Bigfoot nation might be inhabiting our forest, but also Bigfoot is becoming an obsession for a lot of people. I mean this memorabilia movies you name it they got that’s also part of the Bigfoot nation. You also have to remember that we are cutting into their forest and give them lesson less territory with which they can roam around him. The book is divided into the parts. The first part of the book goes into time periods when Bigfoot was observed this goes all the way back from the frontier days, all the way to the present time with the present time being in the heyday when everyone is seeing Bigfoot Now, Bigfoot has been seen in Florida where he called a stump skunk ape, and Bigfoot is also been seen in New Mexico and Arizona and other areas of the southwest so he lives in a lot of different areas of. It’s all the same species. There’s a nice second bibliography at the end. The term Bigfoot was coined in 1958 by a man named J.Crew, who was operating a bulldozer at a construction site where they tore down a bunch of forestry the native Americans used to call them, wild men or hairy men, sometimes calm them which Sasquatch come from and people used to call them wild men before they got the name Bigfoot. Overall, a good book very entertaining to read very interesting to see the stories and how Bigfoot interacts differently with different people. Hope you enjoy reading this one.

ALOT of reports. Good old ones from the 1800’s which I believe prove there is something/someone out there.

If you've ever wanted to read 300 pages of reports of Bigfoot sightings, this is the book for you.

The first five chapters list sightings in the northern United States and Canada, chronologically from 1800 to 2000. These are followed by a chapter devoted to sightings of "skunk apes" in the Southeast US and a chapter on sightings in the Southwest. The final chapter focuses on sightings from 2000 to the present.

Childress presents the reports fairly straightforwardly, with a very small amount of personal opinion and narrative. Several reports include excerpts from newspaper reports of the day. The book is interspersed with black and white photographs, maps, and copies of historical articles. Two sections of glossy color pictures are also included.

Childress does discuss some obvious hoaxes while also hinting at a government conspiracy to cover up the truth of Bigfoot.

Included are reports of black, brown, red, gray, and white Bigfoot; male, female, and children Bigfoot, aggressive and merely curious Bigfoot.

I'm not obsessed with Bigfoot but I found the book interesting (entertaining might be a better word). It certainly has me questioning just what might be possible out there in the wild places. It Bigfoot probable? No. Is it possible? Yes.

And honestly, wouldn't it be cool if it WAS real?

“Fortunately, Bigfoot was never blamed for the 9/11 attacks” is not a sentence I ever thought I would read

The loony stuff was great, but a lot is just unsolved disappearances and deaths with "was it bigfoot?" tagged on the end. And even the good stuff gets repeated a lot.

Biggest take away: Bigfoot stinks, he has a trademarked Whoop Whoop sound a la a Juggalo, and he stills children.

It's Bigfoot

This book is primarily brief reports/stories of Bigfoot encounters. I'm a Bigfoot enthusiast so it entertained me. I am a believer!
