SOMETHING IS OUT THERE…
For generations residents from coast to coast have reported encounters
with large, black, long-tailed cats. These black panthers have left a trail
of dead livestock and confused witnesses in their wake. These are animals
that are not supposed to exist; animals that are not recognized by science.
Despite the reluctance of wildlife offi cials to accept the reality of these
cryptid cats, anomalous tracks continue to appear, pets and farm animals
continue to disappear, and sightings continue to be reported on a monthly
basis. What exactly are residents of the more rural areas of the United
States seeing?

Join author Michael Mayes as he examines historical sightings, interviews
contemporary witnesses and big cat experts, sorts through a host of
intriguing photographs, and takes a close look at the potential suspects in
one of America’s most enduring unsolved mysteries. What are the shadow
cats that haunt the woods, bottomlands, and waterways of our country?

This book was a very pleasant surprise for me! "Black panther" sightings across the U.K. and North America have been occurring for centuries and it's a mystery that has always piqued my interest. Growing up, the legend of these shadow cats has always been fascinating and I've always wondered as to what animals the witnesses were actually seeing. I stumbled across this book on Amazon one day and decided to order it just out of curiosity, knowing nothing about the book or the author. I was very impressed by the meticulous and thorough research that the author provided for this book as he goes into all the possible suspects the witnesses could be seeing, accounts dating back from the 1800s up until the present day and even gets some experts opinions on the matter. There are also some photographs from the witnesses included and it was very interesting to look at them and try and make my own conclusions based on them. I believe the author went about this in a very scientific and objective way and I especially loved the way he ended this book with his own opinion and by saying we as the readers can help solve this mystery as well. I think I may just take him up on that one day. Highly recommended to anybody who has been fascinated by this mystery or who would like to delve more into it.

As a fellow fanatic of wild cats of North America I have easily over two dozen books on mountain lions and other cats. As a researcher of claims of mountain lion sightings in the east as well as black panther sightings I was excited yet apprehensive to get this book. I was not disappointed; this is a well researched and well written and balanced book on the topic of black panther sightings that isn't over the top with belief.

This is a solid book on black panthers in North America, though primarily focused on Texas, where the author lives. Mayes writes well and does a good job at covering sightings, possible 'answers' to the mystery, etc. I liked that he did not go overboard into automatic belief but seemed more objective.

For any American cryptid fan, and especially fans of panther tales, this is a great and realistic book on what could actually be going on.
