I devoured each and every sentence of this book. Surely, I have become a huge fan of Malti Joshi although this anthology of short stories is the only work of her that I have read. Each story revolves around the life of a female protagonist and weave a compelling tale from her seemingly mundane existence. Each and every story exudes strong feminist hues, albeit the feminist ideals of the stories can sometimes frustrate a 21st century feminist reader. Having said that, I admit that I am in love with this book and in awe of the strong female characters, who despite their different outlook of life, greatly inspired me. Other than the plot and the characters of the stories, I also loved the writing style of Malti Joshi. It flows like a mountainous stream, and it seamlessly blends colloquial style with high-brow literary language. The language of this book is so beautiful that after completing each story I was left with a bitter-sweet taste of nostalgia for a past that I had never lived, as well as for the characters who had became so close to me within a span of 1 hour or so. I believe it's the prowess of the writer that she got me so involved in the lives of her characters. Though all the stories deal within the larger framework of man-woman relationship and the private sphere of women's lives, yet it story offers a refreshing perspective because Joshi gives her varied characters the privilege to tell their side of the story. I enjoyed reading each and every story from the anthology, but if I were to pick four of my most favorite stories then they will be: 1) शापित शैशव, 2) परिणय, 3) अंतिम संक्षेप, 4) बहुरि अकेला.
I am so glad that I came across this book and I hope I will read more of Malti Joshi in future. This has surely become one of my favorite books that I read in 2021.
I will end my review with one of my favorite lines from the book ( It's from the story शापित शैशव):
"जो प्यार करते हैं, वें आँख मूँदकर प्यार करते हैं। अपनों की
गलतियाँ देखनेवाली नजर ही उनके पास नहीं होती।"

Heart touching stories ny one of the sensitive woman writers of our time. Her grasp of language and art of explaining day to day struggle of middle class Indians is praiseworthy. Hindi sahitya mein ruchi rakhne walon ke liye aavashya padme layak pustak.

One of the top women writers of India. Any middle class Indian would easily relate to the characters of these stories and would feel as if these characters are living somewhere near him. I

Feel good stories.

जैसे dark chocolate bar हौले हौले जीभ और तालू में पिघलता है , वैसे ही ये कहानिया आपके उदासी मन , गुस्से , तीखेपन को पिघला सी देते हैं |

और एक के बाद आप दूसरी कहानी का स्वाद चखने के लिए आगे बढ़ने लगते हो |

हमारी आम जिंदगी से जुडी कहानियां |

कुछ ऐसे बचपन , जो बिन पिता के बड़े हुए हैं ; तो कुछ लोक प्रेम के किस्से जो माप तौल के होते हैं , कुछ रिश्ते जो हम बस ढोते हैं , रिश्ते जो कभी समझ ही नहीं आते और कुछ चुनाव ऐसे- जहाँ कोई स्वार्थ नहीं |

कुछ ऐसे मन के टोकरे जहाँ बरसों पुरानी बातें गठरिया बाँध कर बैठी हो और बात बात पर टुकुर टुकुर कर वर्तमान पर असर डालती हो |

कुछ किस्से ऐसी जहाँ एक औरत अपने भीतर अपने बलात्कार को छिपा लेती है , जो सही नहीं लगता; पर फिर लगता है – घर घर ऐसा ही तो होता है , सब अपने दिल में राज छिपा लेते हैं – डर से , शर्म से , अज्ञान से | खुद के लिए ही खुद से लड़ना कितना मुश्किल लगता है और फिर क्या , जिंदगी की संध्या , कहानी की चरित्र संध्या की तरह ही ढल भी जाती है | बस यूँही – खुद से हारकर

हमारे ज्यादातर रिश्ते ऐसे होते हैं , जिन्हें भाग्य की लकीर कहकर, हम अपनी पूरी जिंदगी बर्बाद कर लेते हैं |
खैर सच तो ये है , कि , हमारे रिश्ते, उनकी करवाहत – सब कुछ स्वार्थ के ही होते हैं , और जिन्हें नहीं पता , वो इन कहानियों को पढ़कर , थोड़ा सजग हो पाएंगे | और जो इस बात को जान गए हैं , वो पाठक अपनी हालत सुधारने के लिए प्रयास में लग जायेंगे |

इन कहानियों के कुछ रिश्तों के किस्से, कभी किसी मोर पर हमें कोई मीठी - करवी याद ताजा कर जायेंगे | वो याद जो कभी एक हलकी सी हंसी की तरह झलकती है या फिर भीतर एक पल के लिए जहर बन उभरती है |

आख़िरकार हर कहानी की कोशिश तो रहती है , हमें अपनी असलियत से मुलाकात कराना , खुद से रूबरू कराना ; ताकि शुरुआत कितनी भी करवी और खट्टी रही हो , हम अपने प्रयासों से उसका अंत मीठा और सुखद कर सकते हैं |

तो चलो फिर, अब आगे बढ़ते हैं |

Short stories always teach life in large dimensions. In this book by Smt. Malti Joshi, simple and realistic stories taken from middle-class families mostly from the state of Madhya Pradesh. Each story reflects the emotions, values of life, the darkness of minds and many more that talk about a person's life. The simple and elegant language with a smooth flow of story-telling appeals and allows readers of any age to read the book.

अपनी युवावस्था से ही मैं मालती जी के लेखन का कायल रहा हूं. उनकी कहानियां पारिवारिक संबंधों, मन की कोमल भावनाओं, मानवीय संवेदनाओं और रिश्तों के अंतर्संबंधों को खोलकर रख देती हैं. कथानक में डूब ही जाते हैं. सब-कुछ अपने आसपास होता महसूस होता है. भाषा और कथाशिल्प पर उनका अधिकार प्रभावमयी है.

Awesome read.

The craft of story is as if the story is happening before eyes yet the plot is unpredictable. The best part is that at the end of the story you start feeling proud of the protagonist.

Some of the short stories are very touching. The characters seem very natural, as if we see them everyday. And that is the beauty of Joshi's stories. She picks stories that are some ours.
