How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord (Light Novel) #3

How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, Light Novel Vol. 3

Rate this book
After being summoned to another world that looks almost exactly like the MMORPG he once played, Takuma Sakamoto now spends his days going on adventures with Rem Galleau, the black-furred Pantherian, and Shera L. Greenwood, the Elf princess, both of whom accidentally became enslaved... to him!?

One day, he is suddenly approached by the Fallen, Edelgard, with a request: Would he help her to undo the seal that keeps the Demon Lord Krebskulm inside Rem?

Takuma, under the guise of his in-game character Diablo, hesitates, as he had previously made a promise to Rem to help her defeat Krebskulm— But he pushes through with his Demon Lord role-play and actually agrees!

"I will revive the Demon Lord Krebskulm—and defeat them!"

Now it's his Demon Lord role-play vs. an actual Demon Lord! This is the third volume of an adventure with an earth-shakingly powerful Demon Lord (or at least someone who acts like one) taking on another world!

This book finishes off where the anime does, so anyone familiar with the anime will know exactly what goes on in this book. It's actually pretty interesting, as from what I remember, the book actually ends differently than the anime, which seems to end in such a way that if there isn't a sequel, it finishes nicely. The book clearly sets the continuation of the story up for the next book, which I have to say I enjoyed far more than how the anime handled it.

I was actually really happy with this novel. Even the part I was anxious about approaching (how they summon the full demon lord with Rem) didn't turn out quite as brutal as the anime presented it. Actually, it handled it far better, keeping it dark, but not so dark that it completely destroyed all the comedy and overall feel of the series. Instead, you get the brutality of it, but the way it is presented is just the perfect amount.

The continual evolution of the side characters is also nice to see. They don't get swept aside and forgotten about, but rather each and everyone from the previous books make an appearance and evolve slightly as they interact with the protagonist and his party. You also get some good inter-character conversations without the protagonist, which helps to show how each of the people involved act towards each other without the lens of the protagonist.

As with the first two books, there is also plenty of fan service, which is dished out in just the right amount with both description and artwork. It's not stupidly sexist, nor does it feel like it's being shoved down your throat like other light novels. Instead, it feels closer to innocent and more in line with a fantasy world rather than, well, fanservice. Even the scene with Rem and the summoning of the demon lord was handled better in the book than the anime, which pushed it over the top and dragged out the entire scene for visual gags and fanservice. The novel actually handles it kind of tenderly, and because of that you get more of a character relationship evolution rather than something that just turns you on.

So in the end, why 4 stars rather than 5 if I don't seem to have any issues with the story?
Well, that has to do with the fact that this one felt more subdued. Despite a lot happening, it doesn't actually feel very urgent, which is unfortunately. Perhaps it is the protagonist's over powered nature that created the lack of tension, or perhaps it was the fact that the demon lord is nothing compared to the Paladin when it comes to brutality, but everything just seems duller than the previous two books.

So there you have it. I enjoyed this book, and I am excited to read the next one as it goes beyond the anime. I want to see where the characters go in both their travels and character development. I want to see if it keeps following the harem dynamics that most light novels do, or if it will go somewhere else. All in all, I really would recommend this to someone interested in the light novel genre and who enjoys fantasy novels. I think you will enjoy it.

I'm actually finding myself enjoying this series more than i originally thought i would. A guy who gets sucked into a video game and has to pretend to have a badass demon lord persona because he's terrible at talking to people but also being OP.

Being OP is a very fine line to walk. It's all about personality. If you're personality is boring or terrible, then the story will be bad. (for example of terrible OP protagonists, Rey from Star wars or Kibito from Sword art) if you're going to have an OP protagonist, their characterization has to carry it. and thankfully, HNTSADL is managing to make him likeable.

This time around he's dealing with the resurrection of the demon lord that was inside Rem and the aftermath. It's a fun volume with some silly but also some dramatic things mixed in as well. I continue to like Rem the panther girl, and Shera (the elf) is...okay. Not my favorite, but she's fine.

These books are a very fast read and you look forward to getting to the next part as it keeps it fresh and interesting. Continuing on the trend of 16+ plus though, there's definitely a few scenes in the book that you can definitely tell were placed in there for the purpose making this book 16+. there's a scene of nude bathing at the river as well as the way MC has to infuse Rem with magic, let's just say he needs to use his hands.......somewhere. Every book seems to have 1-2 scenes like this, and this one is no exception. As long as you're fine with that and you know going in, it's fine. it's not like it's 'redo of healer' or anything.

All in all, yeah, i'm definitely looking forward to next volume and will be continuing with the series. The plot isn't the best one i've read and it does get a little slow or sidetracked once or twice, but it's definitely enjoyable to the point that i'm looking forward to seeing what happens next and i'm planning on getting volume 4 soon.

So that, being said, 3.5 out of 5 rounded up to a 4.

Just when I thought I might actually be liking the book, there is an event that just really turned me off. As ecchi as this series often is, this went too far for me. The second two thirds of the book were tarnished by this, it really turned me off. I read the first 100 pages or so in an afternoon, the next 160 took me a week.

It was more than that one event, though that really did make it easier to put down. It certainly didn't help that the Demon Lord Krebskulm and that of course Rem and Shera fawn all over her.

Probably the most interesting character in this volume was Saddler, the paladin. Nobody else was or did anything else particularly special really. Guess that's what happens when you have such an OP main character, that when they pull out the super-moves you wonder why they've been holding back the whole time rather than go -- Oh, WOW.

I may read one more just to see if the series goes anywhere, but with as many books/series as there are to read, I am sorry to say How Not to Summon a Demon Lord is being placed on the back burner of my reading stove again.

Another awesome volume

Loved it! As with the last two volumes it's like the directors cut of the anime. A few things happen a little different and there's a more serious vibe. It was a really good book and I'm looking forward to getting started on the next volume, because it will be new territory for me. This book is were season 1 of the anime stops.

The last book end with us seeing Alicia showing her true colors. We see slot of her double agent act that ends with betrayal. We are introduced to church and paladins. We also learn a little bit about the fallen. Can't wait to keep going.

Not what I expected

The cover art Made me think there was going to be some gender bending magic at play, but was a pleasant surprise. You can't judge a book by its cover.☺

Great comedy fantasy, I rate it alongside Discworld at its best.

Compared to the last book, +50 points for a nicely paced plot and continuing the character trends from the previous book. However, minus a million points for the author's blatant pedophile pandering. Honestly, I thought we were better than this by now...
