It’s Desmond and Andres versus a spooky library shusher in the fifth book of the Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol series!
It’s no surprise that the library is one of Desmond Cole’s favorite haunts. After all, it’s a place full of books about werewolves, UFOs, and things that go bump in the night. But since Kersville isn’t a normal town, why would it have a normal library? Especially when the undead are so well-read!
With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol chapter books are perfect for emerging readers.
Andres Miedoso is still afraid of everything as a grown-up, even after all his adventures with Desmond Cole. He lives in New York City with his family, and he remains best friends with Desmond but returns to Kersville only when he's needed.
What can I say? It’s another great installment in the Desmond Cole series. This one was particularly exciting for me because it centered libraries.
When Desmond and Andres are assigned a project to research historical parts of their town, they are sent to the Kersville Public Library. Naturally, the encounter some supernatural things while there. This time it’s the ghost of a someone who loves the library. Her reasons for haunting are rather funny and interesting. As always I love the friendship dynamics that exist between Desmond and Andres. They are polar opposites but they seem to work well together. Their adventures always help them learn new things about the community, and each other.
Definitely looking forward to the next installment in the series. This are quick, fun and perfect for those younger readers that enjoy spooky books.
“Everybody knew old books and ghosts went together like, well, school and homework.”
This time, the adventure starts when Dr. Ackula (DON’T call him Mr.) gives an assignment to do research about something in the town of Kersville. Desmond and Andres are excited to get the public library: Andres because it seems safe and Desmond because he can use the books and computers for research. But Andres might change his mind. “That crazy library looked even more haunted than our haunted-looking school ... and I didn’t think that was possible.”
Their quest starts quite normally. Mrs. Shoosh, the librarian, directs them to the history section. But when they stop off in the kids section, things start to happen. First, all the books seem to jump off the shelf. Then there’s the mysterious “Shhhhhhhing” coming from no one who can be seen. The lights go out and then the shhhhhhing appears on all the computer screens. Just what is going on? Desmond is determined to find out. “Ghosts haunt places because they want something. They don’t do it just for fun.” Wouldn’t a ghost in a library want books? Seems logical, so they build a ghost trap out of books. But they get more than they bargained for.

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Andres and Desomond are assigned a report on the history of the town library. Desmond is thrilled because he suspects it is haunted and Andres is terrified. While visiting the library, they learn that it is haunted by an old lady who keeps shushing them. They eventually make friends with the ghost and are able to help her by repairing her reading glasses.
This is a very accessible book for young readers, with big writing and easy words, but high interest plot. The story has a great lesson about the things we are scared of often being the things we don’t understand. I’m glad this simple story moved beyond a ghost story to a story about service and responsibility.
I like this book because this book has a good ghost, and Desmond and Andres thought the ghost was bad, but the ghost didn't mean to be bad. Desmond and Andres went to the Kersville Public Library to research everything about Kersville's Library. They ran into Ethel the ghost. The ghost shushered them many times even on the computer screen! So Andres is afraid, even Desmond was afraid of the ghost Ethel! When Desmond was done his book and he put them on the shelves, but the books fell off again, for 11 times! Mrs. Shoosh was one of the librarian. so they tell Mrs. Shoosh what happened. but when Mrs. Shoosh came to the place, every thing was fine. Then, they went to the computer lab but it all said:shhhhhhhhhhhh. They were afraid so they ran out. So they want to make a ghost trap. When Ethel came, she blowed the trap away. they were afraid Ethel made a people trap. So Ethel said why Ethel shush people, Desmond looked at Ethel's glasses and he thought about Zax and then Zax come and fixed her glasses. they went to a story time reading.

Ok so I know this is book 5 but I didn’t think it’d matter if I started with this book first( and it really didn’t that much) BUT; Omg this book covers the two out of three things I love; 1. Books, and 2. Ghosts.
I loved Desmond cole and the ghost patrol. It’s about two boys who are friends and go to the same school and are in the same class together. One day they get a group assignment and theirs was to find out the history on the local library. After school they get to the library and find out it’s haunted.
I just love the imagination and thought that’s put into kids books. Kids books are probably one of my most favorite kind of books to read just because every book is different. Yes I recommend this if you want a short, quick, but slightly spooky read.
This is a fantastic series for kids who are just beginning to make the transition from beginning readers to chapter books, whether as first or second grade independent readers or as preschoolers looking for "a big chapter book" to be read aloud to them. The pacing is quick, the characters are consistent from book to book (an important consideration for readers who are only just starting to understand the concept of characterization), and it's spooky without being actually scary. I highly recommend this series to kids who fall into that age bracket.
Andres and Desmond go to the library to do some research for a school project and experience some ghostly activity. They meet the resident ghost and its actually a nice old lady ghost that loves hearing people read out loud because she's so fond of books, so she shushes anyone who talks too loud in the library.
Rating: g+ for fright, ghosty story Recommend: younger elementary kiddos looking for “scary books”
I really enjoyed this little book. It had scooby doo feel, like the reader knew it really wasn’t what it looked like. The boys are brave to challenge their fears, and creative to come up with solutions. Ethnically diverse images.
I absolutely love this series. The stories are fun and the characters are entertaining. I think my little nephew is going to love this series for the Halloween season.
Actual rating: 4.5. Now they're patrolling other monsters and creatures besides ghosts. I always like the kind of stories where it involves a haunted Library
All book readers who ever said, “when I die I’m going to haunt a library/book store so I can finally read all the books I couldn’t get to” can relate to the library shusher’s motivations.

But why were the books flying around and hitting Desmond?!?! Eliot says maybe the shooshing was so powerful all the books fell. I guess we will have to settle for that.
This book didn't connect as well with my son. He still likes the stories and asks for "one more chapter" each night. I think he got more chuckles out of the other editions.
