Part of the Inside Vehicles series, this oversized board book focuses on eight flying machines throughout history. Each vehicle represents an outstanding example of a major move forward in aircraft development. Every two-page spread focuses on one aircraft, with an introductory paragraph describing its historical importance. Two or more flaps located on the featured aircraft illustration open up, revealing more information. The various physical parts of each aircraft are clearly labeled. Also included are details about similar or contemporary aircraft, pilots and their contributions, and related information. Graham does an excellent job of explaining the importance of the highlighted airplanes and selects the most interesting information about each one. Biesty's detailed illustrations, done in ink and colored pencil, are accurate and outstanding, as usual. An intriguing introduction for browsers, though youngsters wanting more information about these and other aircraft will have to look beyond this title.
