After that evening, life for Jewels and Rome will never be the same.Together, they climb to the top, but Jewels is the one responsible for getting them there.Sex, money, and murder are the outcome as the world of prostitution collides with the drug game. Bodies begin to drop, and the streets are littered with corpses as an all-out war is launched. The Midwest heats up and things become even more complicated when Jewels is put in the line of fire and becomes the target.
Start to finish, there is nothing worthwhile, uplifting or new. This is a complete waste of time. Tried hard to give it half a star, but I can't. 0 of 10 stars
This book was very entertaining to me. There were scenes of laughter, glamour, beauty mixed with a touch of a classy lifestyle living in a fantasy world. It amazes me as to believing how people’s lives can turn out good or bad while living on the streets of hopelessness. This book had enlightened me as to making chooses from a life of despair that could allow you to become a stronger survivor breaking through barrier that tries to prevent you from improving your situation, or despair can break you down into a crumbing weak soul, lost in fear preventing you from drugs and crime.
I liked this book. It picked up right away, but went all over the place. I am hoping all gets cleaned up in part 2. The way Buster was coming at them was crazy & I don't believe all is done with The African..
*Free w/ Audible, read by the great Hikane* Jewels wakes up in her Maserati unsure what’s going on besides she’s passed out around a John and has something burning thrown on her face. We work backwards from this scene, learning she was a high class escort for mostly Asian businessmen. She got he start at 12, inspired to outdo her mom in a much happier way: Ch 1 shows the pimp, Ice, raping his bottom girl and scraping her up w/ a coat hanger. Until her daughter Jewels, interrupts.
In present, Jewels’ best customer is a nice though quirky Korean immigrant who proposes but she is too worried to rely on just one man. It seems implied she may have woken up in the clutches of rough and clingy Kareem in the prologue. But then a fat, white customer punches her for no reason. The next ch intros mid-20s Rome, he’s a low-key bloodthirsty gangbanger though still youthfully reckless w/ a gun—but not drugs (sell, not ingest). He at least uses his money to treat his mom a lot and plans to retire in 5 yrs to get into real estate. He spots a dude who crossed him and can’t let it go. Before he does something, he comes across Jewels being chased and saves her. Turns out she still blames Kareem for what happened because he canceled on her.
Jewels falls for Rome “ and super soon he’s living with her to lay low to cover up his drug dealing. She doesn’t know the details of his game but assumes there’s something shady from the start with how cold and easy he handled her attacker. They’re not alone in her classy apt usually though, because of her coworker Sassy. They had similar backgrounds, Sassy molested before she was a tween though learned to like it and turn it into money from her own fam and then richy riches. Nonetheless, she’s real likable, so upbeat and jokey, wanting to hang with everyone and crushing on a suited, face-tatt shooter.
Jewels and Rome keep to themselves, working their sordid/luxurious careers, but every time they see each other, they crush and lust hard. Kareem works his magic on her mind too though when he throws her a big birthday party and pays as much as Rome for “rent.” The writing is mostly typical of urban fiction or slightly awk sexual descriptions but they can be so funny, I forgive them. I really like the plot in general and how the MC comes to change her views on violence in justice. Good twists within achieving revenge. Maybe others think it’s obvious but I normally don’t pay attention to plot pattern so directly. Things were so sweet or what’s expected w/ crime life, that I forgot things could be like beginning again w/ the shock factor. Makes this story stand out not just in urban lit, but fiction in general. I have such appreciation for gritty-gross transgressive work. Ends in a “To Be Continued” though that’s in 2016 so I don’t know if this is an abandoned project, but we get decent enough closure from inferences.
Working Girls (Audible) By KATT What was only supposed to be saving a damsel in distress, Jewels ended up falling for someone she vowed never to because of his profession, Jewels nor Rome had any idea they had something in common. The same enemy. While that enemy helped them build a bond, they also brought them problems. I don't know how this book reads but on audible, this was a dope listen. I hope part 2 releases soon so I can see how Rome and Jewels get out of this mess. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I enjoyed Working Girls by Katt. I listened to it on Audible. Working girls held my attention. I’m ready to see what happens in part 2. I just wished it was a stand-alone book.
There was a few typos And other errors in the book but besides that it was a good read. This book was better than I expected and completely different from what I thought it was about. It was like a hood version of "Pretty Women" if there's a part || (2) I wonder what it would be about.
It started off pretty good. Jules had an interesting background and her chance meeting with Rome was a good setup. However, the quick disposal of her enemies left little room for anything of interest. The story kind of lost its way toward the end.
I listened to this book and I think overall it was pretty good. The past and present day back and forth got a little confusing at times but it was still ok.
