Rankin did not disappoint me: this book is just as witty and funny as all the other books that I read by him in the past. But the story line is totally different: this one plays in "Fairy Land" instead of the UK but the characters are not to be played with by children! Rankin has a very creative take our nursery rhyme characters. You will never look at Little Miss Muppet or Humpty Dumpty the same way again...
This book actually made me laugh out loud several times. Yet is is full of parallels to modern times politics and reflections on our lives. Several parts were so well written and so funny that I considered writing them down but alas: I was reading it in bed - as usual - and had nothing to write next to me. But I might still go back and do so!

Ostensibly for children, but, in actuality, not. Not at all. They had me until the 12 year old had sex with a prostitute.

I dunno: maybe I'm a prude.

There's some good stuff in here. this book has some very interesting ideas, but they're so buried under a lot of confusion and mixed messages that it's sometimes hard to see.

Not particularly recommended.

To those who think this is a kids book. IT IS NOT! It is a funny adult parody of noir mystery novels set in a fantasy land of fairy tale characters and toys. If you like SouthPark humor, then this is a book series for you.

I couldn't really put my finger on what bothered me about this book, until a little while after I'd tried to get into it for the fifth time. The main thing, I guess, that bothered me was that Mr. Rankin seemed to be trying to emulate the good Mr. Pratchett, and not quite succeeding. Which is not a bad thing - if there is one person I'd like to fail at trying to be like as a writer, it's Terry Pratchett.

However, I just couldn't really get into this book all that much. Aside from the moment when the thirteen year old protagonist has sex with a prostitute, the book was charming and cute in places, and there seemed to be quite a bit of potential, but not all that much development.

I'm not sure who I'd recommend this for - maybe people in need of a "Pratchett Lite" entry.

Bizarre story about a world of living toys and a man who gets mixed up in it. Fascinating perspective on our world and theirs.
