brief but effective overview
Aimed at readers perhaps at high school level, this is a good introduction to Ethiopia. About 140 pages long, but with many excellent, full-page photos and several maps, covering everything from history and culture to religion, food, sports, and medical problems, the brief nature of each section is inevitable. Still, most bases are touched. If many controversies and most intricacies are left out, a reader may get a basic idea about this large, ancient country which is probably destined to play a larger role in the world's future than it has in the past. The authors tread carefully on the subject of modern politics. The post-Imperial traumas, the Beta Israel or Jews of Ethiopia, human rights concerns, the famous long-distance runners, contemporary musicians, the national park system, the economy---these are only a few of the topics that show the authors thought out their presentation very well. The design of the pages, with boxes and small asides will attract younger readers too. While this book is far from academic, it can appeal to anyone who wishes to start learning about an interesting country. I wish I had had such a book when I was young.
