Tainted Moonlight #2

Captured Moonlight

Rate this book
Five years ago a supernatural virus changed the world as we know it. What was once the stuff of fantasy and bad horror movies suddenly is reality- werewolves and vampires exist. It isn’t the end of the world, but for Korban Diego and Sophie Bane it often feels as if it is.
Lost in the deep forest of the Adirondack Mountains, Korban and Sophie’s journey continues. While their wolves feel right at home in the woods, their human halves remain conflicted. Returning to the comforts of civilization means going back to face a harsh reality and it is tempting to vanish in the wild and leave their worries behind.
Things become even more complicated when their paths cross with new werewolves who also call this territory home, but out in the wild there is a thin line between friend and foe.

Erin Kelly lives in Syracuse, New York with a precocious Siamese, a wacky Westie named Winchester after one of her favorite television series, and a lovable little mutt named MacManus after another set of her favorite brothers. When she is not writing about werewolves, she is often drawing, reading, swimming at the gym, or can be found at several local karaoke bars belting out ballads by the Backstreet Boys with her friends.

Tainted Moonlight is her first published novel. The sequel Captured Moonlight is available now as well, with more to come in the series. Both stories are now available through Amazon and can be ordered anywhere books are sold!

I loved reviewing the first book, so when the author offered me a review copy of the second (in audio book again) I was happy to accept!

The plot of this book is a bit more like a diversion than I anticipated. The first fourth or so and the last couple pages do deal with fall out from the ending of the first book. But the majority of the center deals with an entirely separate, new threat. There is also a host of new characters separate from the ones in the first book. I did miss seeing RJ and Alex. Not only are they an adorable couple, but I love the voices the audio book narrator (Torian Brackett) has for them. They are in it a bit, so it wasn't a total loss. But not hearing "Lobo" said repeatedly in Alex's voice was a net loss for me.

I think a large part of the reason this book feels like it's a digression is due to the very end. Without getting too spoilery, it becomes obvious that the new cast of characters won't be fixtures in the next book. And the very last plot point, while it sets up an incredible tension for the next book, would have happened regardless of whether or not the new threat in this book had been introduced.

That being said, it's not as if the book has nothing to do with the greater story. There are some major reveals about the mechanics of werewolves. How the virus can be spread, the danger they pose, pack structures, and so on. I won't go into too many details (again, spoilers) but there was definitely a deepening of the lore throughout the story. And there is the relationship between Korban and Sophie. As I don't usually listen to audio books, I'd never listened to one with a sex scene. Can't say that I fully enjoyed the experience, but that has more to do with the surprise that it was happening in the first place than any fault of the narrator's.

I'm sure once I've gotten farther into the series (especially given what's coming next), I'll consider this book more of a side quest than the main storyline. But side quests are fun, so it works well.

Captured Moonlight is book 2 in the Tainted Moonlight series following the story of Korban Diego and Sophie Bane.

Korban and Sophie find themselves deep in the Adirondack Mountains, conflicted. They face consequences back home. So, they decide to stay in the wild just the two of them just a bit longer. But they aren't alone in the wild like they think. Something sinister has laid traps in the forest and soon Korban and Sophie find themselves separated - the consequences that await them back home seem like child's play to what they now face.

The romance was long awaited (but a bit steamy) and the story line was well executed. Torian Brackett did a fabulous job once again with his narration (I listened to the audiobook). I will say I was a bit disappointed that my questions from book 1 were not answered, but I love Korban and Sophie so much that I will happily listen to more of their adventures. Overall, I give this book 3.5 stars, and I would recommend it to adult readers of urban fantasy.

Korban Diego and Sophie Bane wake up in The Adirondack Mountains as human from their forced turning into wolves. They're not sure how much time has passed or where at in The Adirondacks. They realize they're time is precious until Korban is caught in a trap with no escape. Now Sophie must search for Korban to free him. Sophie meets up with a wolf pack called Valhalla Knights who lost one of their own to the trap. Where is Korban? Can Sophie and Valhalla Knights find the lost? Your answers await you in Captured Moonlight.

Time to give up the ghost and admit that I can't bring myself to finish this. The persistent grammar/tense issues that bothered me in the first book are still present, and I've only gotten about 50 pages in because I keep avoiding reading it. Definitely time to call it quits.
