Being a single dad is hard enough without temptation living next door.
After my wife died, I was broken. My daughter, Ava, was taken by social services and I had nothing left to live for. But I’ve fought my way back into the world and I’ve got a second chance with Ava.
When Ava befriends my gorgeous next-door neighbor, Charlotte, something changes. Charlotte’s a painter, and everything she touches seems to turn into art. Ava wants to get closer, to learn how to paint from her. And she takes me along for the ride.
Charlotte’s peachy lips and warm, sparkling eyes stir desires in me that I thought had died along with my wife. But it seems like my body’s betraying me, aching for Charlotte when I’m not sure I’ll ever be over my first love.
If I fall for Charlotte, how can I live with myself? But if I don’t give in to my longing, how can I ever move past my grief?

Famous musician Jack Sargent's beloved wife Sarah was killed in a car accident causing his world to spiral out of control and making it hard for him to find a reason to go on. Charlotte Travers struggles with finding her footing when the husband she has spent years building her hopes and dreams with abandons her. When Jack's daughter Ava, reaches beyond their personal struggles and joins them in the common ground of the mutual love they have for her, could their love extend to each other?
Being intimate with others grief is not an easy task for a writer. To dig past exteriors and share the internal process, not only between a work's portrayals but have readers empathize is at the very least a daunting task. Kat Tobin took Jack's heartbreak from a place of ceaseless agony to one of healing and moving on and did so with patience and tenderness. Charlotte like Jack was dealing with her own sorrow and the recognition of overpowering hurt in each other was a strong catalyst for them both to initiate tackling issues that needed to be dealt with in order to move on. Their mutual love of a little girl, Ava, floundering in her own grief was gently handled with many sad and sweet moments, moving this story quickly. The attraction between the leads was ferocious and intense bringing back the dormant flames of happiness to their world weary and anguish filled lives. While this story dealt with some extreme sadness it also was one of hope and caring that found its way to being uplifting. Kat Tobin's introspective writing and her demonstrated ease in story telling make her books ones to look forward to and an author to follow. Distortion was a strong addition to the Avowed Brother's series and is a book that will speak to reader’s hearts.
*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own. * *While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone. *
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is the story of the eldest brother, Jack. In the previous books (this book can be read as a standalone novel, but I recommend reading the first 2 books), we know that Jack lost his wife in a car accident & that his grief lead him into seclusion for a few years before reuniting with his band/brothers, the Avowed & his daughter. In “Distortion”, Jack is finally trying to get his life back on track and trying to be a good father to his daughter. His grief is all encompassing until he meets Charlotte, an artist and former kindergarten teacher. This book is written in alternating POVs, which really helps us to see how Jack moves from his grief into letting another woman into his life & his heart while we watch Charlotte develop feelings for this man struggling to love again. The characters are well developed, but I had a little trouble getting into the book. I just couldn’t see the chemistry between Jack & Charlotte in the beginning. After about halfway through, I enjoyed watching how their relationship evolved as well as how Ava’s relationship with her father strengthened.
This is book 3 of the Avowed Brothers series and it was such a fantastic read it made my heartache for Jack and it left a lump in my throat. Jack is part of the band Avowed, he lost the love of his life gave his child into foster care and had hit rock bottom. Now that Jack has his life back together and has his daughter back he meets his next door neighbour ( Charlotte ) through his daughter Ava. Charlotte is a pre- school teacher taking a break to persue her art, when they meet sparks fly but will Jack be able to love again and if he does will he feel guilty thinking that he has betrayed his wife Sarah?! This is a wow book it had me hooked right from the start, I had a good cry with what Jack went through. This book definitely touched my heart and this is one book that will be on my to read again shelf, even when I had finished this book I still had a lump in my throat and even after nearly two days of finishing this book I still think about it! I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read. I give this book a 10/10 as my personal opinion but because I can only give it 5 ⭐️ on here it will have to do. Do get this book you will be so glad you did.
We finally get an in depth look at what happened in Jack’s past to make him the broken, tortured soul that he is. His story is truly heartbreaking. He essentially loses his heart and soul and reason for living. A part of me was frustrated with him for having waited so long to go after Ava. Charlotte has had her own heartbreak with the end of her marriage. I was also a bit irritated that she put up with all that she did from Duncan. Jack and Charlotte together were adorable, and behind closed doors they were hot! Jack’s journal entries honestly made me cry! I really enjoyed this book! I was very fortunate to be able to review an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Ever since I read book 1, I've been looking forward to reading Jack's story and it certainly didn't disappoint. Jack, who recently got his daughter back, struggles to reach his daughter and bury his ever-present grief. Charlotte is still working past her divorce and breakdown by taking a break from work and painting. Ava latches on to Charlotte, her former teacher and neighbor, which brings these two struggling people together. It was a very authentic look into grief, especially from Jack. There were enough angst and grief in it, without it being too much. Just like her other books, Tobin's writing has a very sweet, very authentic feel to it!
This is a beautifully written story of love and loss and regrets. Jack is happily making music with his band, married to the love of his life, a darling daughter, Ava, to spoil, and tragedy strikes. His world falls apart and he spirals out of control. Years later things have changed, he has moved with Ava to a house in the burbs. Next door to Charlotte, a kindergarten teacher/artist. His life is still unsettled and dark, but she befriends Ava and teaches her to paint and Jack finds a comfort in her as another lost soul. A brilliant book.
I'm so glad I read this book. It was emotional but also very romantic and sweet. This is my favorite from Kat so far. My only complaint is I wish it was longer. I feel like it finished to early. To me, there could have been more of a story but it was still great. Absolutely loved it.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
A touching storyline with amazing characters. Jack, Charlotte and Ava are all struggling in their own way. This is the first book I've read by Kat Tobin and thought she did an excellent job writing this emotional story. I voluntarily received this book to review for my honest opinion.
This book was a touching and emotional story, not just a love story but a family one. This book had its ups and it's downs and steamy sex scenes too. The ending was beautiful.
I received an ARC from the author and it didn't disappoint. it's such a heartbreaking story, he loses his wife and he can't seem to move on. ava being his one and only priority. but his neighbour Charlotte somehow managed to get his interest. he fights it but he can't seem to stay away and the fact that his daughter attaches to her so quickly makes him take notice whether he wants to or not. beautifully written. sweet. sexy. fun. loved this story and book, great job Ms Tobin!!
