I was really eager to read this book because it is from JCB price winner author. I will briefly summarise the blurb. Midhun, Sandhya, Rithu and Ragesh are the main characters. Oneday Sandhya received a whatsapp message that Midhun has met with an accident. The bike bumped into some vehicle and skidded on the highway. Later on they were told that Midhun would never come back to life so they should let him go and donate the organs. It’s been a while when they were struggling to get over grief of Midhun’s departure. Then one day Rithu received a message from unknown number saying “Was the vehicle that hit Midhun identified?” This was unexpected and later on Rithu and Ragesh tried to get details regarding that accident. Jana and Pretty helped them to unfold many hidden truths. But what lies beneath this. Read the book to unfold further plot. I liked the plot. It’s unique and full of drama. I liked that it’s based on organ donation concept. I liked the way author has narrated the story. It immediately holds the attention of the reader. The story has been presented with well elaborated manner along with good use of vocabulary and language. I liked the major twist and how it ended. The story has a perfect framework like how it started in linear pattern, then scattered around and at the end how everything made sense. Overall good one. Recommended from my side.

A book written in the mold of Manjaveyil maranangal. But the sad point is the story is really predictable and u can guess what is happening after the initial few pages. The character development is superficial. The writing does have a flow as usual. And each chapter does give u something to think about. All in all just an average read.

In Christianity ‘Body and Blood’ alludes to the symbols of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice that forges God’s communion with his followers. Written by Benyamin and translated by Swarup BR, the core of this book looks at people’ faith and beliefs as also the actors and their motives behind organized religion and the lengths they go to in order to maintain their façade of being the messengers of God.

The theme is an interesting premise and one that could have brought in gravitas to the writing but the narrative takes its own sweet time for the core theme to emerge as the book begins with the accident of a character whose death brings other characters into the picture. It is this accident and later, the reasons for the death that ties the rest of the characters in the book and the theme of the book together. But there are characters that slide into the writing with back-stories that are not relevant to what the main protagonists are going through with and this distracts from the flow of the plot.

Body and Blood is neither a thriller nor one with literary heft and that works against the book for it could have been fleshed out well as either one and stood out distinctly. I think I expected a more literary arc from this one.

This is my first translated book from Malyalam.
Maybe some of its charm was lost in translation and it failed to have a lasting impression on me.

Body and Blood follows the lives of four friends - Sandhya, Midhun, Rithu and Ragesh, spanning across eight Indian cities, before and after the accident and unprecedented death of Midhun.

A word of advice, do not read the synopsis beforehand, as it practically gives away all there is to the mystery concerning Midhun's death and the subsequent organ donation.
The so called crime syndicate is pretty much predictable if you have been a regular consumer of Indian news.

" Every person has a different reason to turn to faith "
" Only Midhun has reasons not to turn to faith "
I really liked how the different characters have varying justifications for joining the fellowship - they range from serving in the name of Christ to avoiding one's partner's overactive sexual drive.

The area where the book deserves praise is how it handled the sensitive issues of faith, religion, and people cheating others in the name of the two.
In a country where you can't avoid religion, no matter how hard you try, this piece of work does open up new areas of discussion.

I'll be talking about some questions that are on my mind, and these may have potential spoilers, so you can skip this part!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Why even mention Kiran's obsession over a murder case, when that angle is not persued?
2. Where does the Reshma-Kiran-Nikhil triangle fit in in the bigger scheme of things?

I'm open to answers from people in the comments.

The 2018 JCB Prize for Literature winner, Benyamin is back with his new book, Body and Blood and just like any other reader I had quite high hopes for it.

But contrary to my expectations, it left me utterly disappointed and I was at the brink of leaving it midway. The story of Body and Blood spins takes sprint with the death of Midhun, in a hit and run accident and as his close knit group of friends and colleagues try to overcome their grief, they are left with a sense of foreboding that something mysterious is at play.

This novel is as predictable as a thriller can be. It might be because the translation went wrong, but it fails to instill suspense : that a mystery is bound to do. And honestly, I was okay with it because I wasn't looking for a literary fiction rather than a suspense novel but oh the miles it felt short.

I couldn't in any way get a grip on the story and the characters were a whole paradox in themselves. The novel promises to nudge the readers into questioning morality and faith and the corruption of an "organized religion" but the prose just didn't fit. There was nothing bold or superlative that hasn't been done before and I will definitely not be recommending it!

But, if you want to read the book, I'd suggest go in without reading the synopsis because it definitely had some serious S P O I L E R S.

"To a man with no desires, what is the god that you are going to talk about?"

"Now? Yes. Who knows about tomorrow."

Simple and okayish. Neither great nor terrible. The subplots and backdrops are existing just for the sake of adding the number of pages and not really adding anything to the story or the characters. Just for the sake of giving a non-stereotypical ending, the author have deprived the reader of the closure. Liked the book though.

Body And Blood by Benyamin is a book which focuses on the the concept of religion and also the racket of organ donation going on in our society. The reason I picked this up was solely because of its intriguing plot on this heavy weighted topic.

Since past few years, I've been inclined towards donating my organs, but when we go and openly talk about this we hear "you're too young to think about all this". Well, who knows what's going to happen tomorrow, right? Touch wood I'm in a pretty healthy shape right now. 😅

So in this story we see the sudden accidental death of Mithun. His friends and relatives - Sandhya, Ragesh, Rithu then go on finding what exactly happened to him and who killed him. Then comes the relegion part where everything is run under the name of "Trinity Foundation".

After going through the book, I went and researched about the concept of "Body And Blood" in Christianity, which symbolises the sacrifices of Jesus Christ and is now offered by giving "Bread and Wine". The core concept of this book is bringing into light the blind belief and faith people have in the name of God.

Talking about the author's writing style, this one's my first book by him. And I am totally in love with the way he writes. At many points during reading this book, I could feel like I am living this story myself. Especially when Rithu and Ragesh has their explainations about Mithun's murder.

The book will give you some goosebumps and the mystery part of this book is quite intact till the end. But I felt that the ending was not promising at all. I would have loved to see a greater clarity on the part of giving justice to Mithun. But I guess that's not the message the author wanted to portray.

I'm really looking forward to reading all his works, especially "Jasmine Days". In the middle parts, I felt little bit bored and felt as if story was going around in circles. But once the plot picks up, it's going to make you think twice about this topic.

This is a topic which we all know is happening around us but always choose to ignore it since we are not related to it, but this book will bring the true events to light under the name of fiction. Do pick up this book if you wish to read something related to this topic.

“Body and Blood” marks my first initiation into Malayalam translated literature. The narrative orbits around four companions: Mithun, Sandhya, Ragesh, and Rithu, whose fates intertwine at a charitable event. All seemed serene until Sandhya received the devastating news of Midhun’s accident—a collision between his bike and another vehicle on the highway. The shattering revelation followed: Midhun’s life couldn’t be salvaged. Amidst the sorrow, doctors and well-wishers rallied to secure his organs for donation, leaving the friends reeling in disbelief as they retreated to their hometown, unable to comprehend Midhun’s sudden absence.

However, their return was not the end of the ordeal. Sandhya received an enigmatic message from an unknown sender, “Have you identified the vehicle that hit Midhun?” This revelation propelled them into a fervent investigation, unraveling the mystery behind the accident.

The author intricately portrays the intricacies of the organ donation process within the charitable realm, shedding light on the clandestine truths lurking beneath. “Body and Blood” emerges as a gripping thriller, unearthing the harsh realities surrounding organ donation. With its vivid descriptions and profound narrative, it stands as a compelling testament to the complexities of life, loss, and the quest for truth. A must-read for those seeking an enthralling exploration of suspense and societal reflection.

This is a book collected in 2020, but read in 2021... I like reading #benyamin for the ease in his telling of the tale.. of course #goatdays was brilliant and then I did like #Jasminedays and it’s sequel.. but what had amazed me is his style of telling a #thriller first through #yellowlightsofdeath. This one #bodyandblood is a book of many kinds.. and he attempts to confront the most intriguing and difficult one of all fronts-that of #faith.. not faith at it’s real, natural, spiritual tug.. but the illusion, the marketing it plays.. the book follows many characters and that’s classic Benyamin telling through lives.. trailing one and leaving one to follow the other.. it reminds me of Jafar Panahi’s Circle.. though it remains focussed on one death and the lives of three connected through the dead and enquiring into the same..there are a few characters which really seemed a bit hastily closed like that of Kiran. (Why he and his lawyer friend was introduced, is still not very clear to me)there are many literary allusions and also that if faith as the one which is kind, giving, relieving without a show.. just that I think the premise was big but was abandoned easily and felt a big short-charged. Nevertheless those of us who won’t miss a single Benyamin novel it’s worth a read just for his superb and simplistic telling of people abs their lives with depth of the heart. #whatiread2021 #bodyandblood

I really wanted to like this book because I saw the authors’ name on the JCB Prize list and read blurbs of all his available books before picking this one.

The translation uses many cliches (example, whatsoever, again and again), the dialogue is kinda tired and the reference dropping feels a bit forced.

I felt the book opened with the accident, then slowed down to character sketches aimed at telling their readers of individual characters’ motivation in joining the organisation, and then switched back to the plot after a long gap.

I didn’t really feel for any main characters. And some like the brothers, I learned almost nothing of.

It would make a good movie though.

Overall this book is not for me but I also watched an interview of the author on YouTube and liked what he was saying, so will give another title a try.

P.S. If you are interested in the organ donation subject via fiction, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go is a great book.

No sooner make Midhun's friends overcome with their grief of loosing him forever a message from an unknown number shook them. Midhun was admitted in a hospital due to an accident though it seemed to be a minor one, surprisingly his condition became worsen. Within 2 days, he was declared brain death and his organ were donated .

Midhun, Sandhya, Rithu and Ragesh come to Delhi from different parts of India. A fellowship united them together . After this fatal death of Midhun, they return to their home town. But the emptiness doesn't stop haunting them and soon they come back to Delhi. And then Rithu, receives a message. Shockingly the sender asks them about to go deep into the Midhun's case.

While the trios dig deep into the case they unfold a truth. The fellowship they are intertwined with, is nothing but a corporate that using others beliefs and not only that it's working as a veil to cover something terrible.

Body and Blood by Benyamin, translated by Swarup B.N. is a story that deals with ghastly issue of organ trafficking and also tries to explore the issues with blind religious beliefs .

The story is connected with 7 cities of India and so the chapters. From the beginning the story feels a bit slow paced and in the middle of the book, the pace of the story seems to increase and also a thrilling atmosphere has been tried to create in vain.

As I have read, his other works, it's hard to believe that his magic of character development doesn't really work here. From the beginning ,Rithu is fierce and intelligent enough, and she's the one who starts dealing with case alone with a little help from Jane and Pretty. She tries to unfold all the secrets at any cost. But when she gets the hint of "danger" she starts to move backwards.

Other hand, Ragesh surprisingly changes himself after the death of "someone "( not gonna reveal the name). A fearless version of Ragesh !

Another thing bothers me a lot is the use of "which is why ". This particular phrase has been used repetitively !

Now, as I have read Benyamin's works earlier, I can't say this is something I can expect from him! The story wraps up quickly with a lack of fulfilment !

I'd definitely suggest Jasmine Days to everyone who wants to start reading his books

It starts off with a slow paced narrative that some may find lagging. The premise setup goes in parallel for different character introduction and arc development but beyond that, the story becomes a bit predictable.
It gets kind of interesting somewhere from middle that you can actually finish off in one sitting. Yet, the predictability of the story puts you in a position where you are actually filling in before the story ends.
However, appreciate the authors idea to talk about couple of socially relevant topics like beliefs, religion and organ donation.
A decent read..

Gist: Spiritualism cannot be confined within an institution, it's a personal journey.

Amidst the thriller-like story, Benyamin sprinkles some info on the dissident Catholic priest Alvarez of Goa (who was accepted into the Malankara Orthodox fold later). This for the curious reader to google. He does the same in his book 'Yellow Lights of Death' where he mentions about the Chaldean church etc.

Book 5/52: Found Family Trope
Not to sound too rigid, but the craft of storytelling is bound by certain formulae. Of course, until and unless a book is blatantly experimental, the story should follow certain rules of the genre in which it stands. The most off-putting factor about Benyamin's Body and Blood, is that, it aims to be a politico-religio-medical thriller (whodunit) in the guise of being a slice of life realist fiction. Which is why, it starts off great, builds and ropes in the reader with its myriad cast of well written characters and a workable tolerable setting, but somewhere around the middle, it loses its pace and flouts its so formed tension, by suddenly taking up a whodunit conundrum as its central conflict. WHat is worse, is that, not only is the tension compromised for, but is also an equally bad thriller, with no definite solution provided at the end. The last 100 pages were too tiresome to go through, and I truly belive, this would have been a fairly good read, if only the story had taken a more workable approach, given that it has a great set-up and pretty much interesting characters to vouch for.

Benyamin’s newest book Body and Blood is a take on faith, God, and his conviction as a shelter to the deceit of powerful religious people. It weaves the subject often debatable, faith as an aid to deception. The story begins with Midhun’s unsure brain death that wasn’t critical at the time of the accident, but later turned out to be severe and ended up in the donation of his organs. As time passed, his friends Rithu, Ragesh, and Sandhya grew wary of criminal and illicit activities going on the other side of the faith and fellowship.
It would be a lie if I would say I didn’t predict the book ahead of time. Honestly, the blurb reveals it all. The plot is foreseeable; it would only for the portrayal that one would want to read. But then, it fails there too. Benyamin tried its best to fit in all the three characters sharing pieces of their lives, but it rolled into a tangle; he tried to create the thrill of Midhun’s case, but it wasn’t convincing enough. It felt like something was amiss. I wasn’t hooked, or it could be because translation didn’t work.

🥢 Body and Blood

A percussionist's delight, a book which was highly anticipated for me... The body was a new concept for a reader expecting much but the blood was missing. Do you ever feel like the story can escape your likeness but the fillers or random chapters, paragraphs have your heart?
Midhun, Sandhya, Rithu and Ragesh unfold beautifully in a relatively impactful take on organ donation and it's aftermath- a mix of thriller, some mystery, lots of dramatic overturns. The quondam of each of the lives intermingling after the death of Midhun, whose organs were donated but the accord of the death, unites souls in a journey much less perceived to uncover some unanswered questions.

My first Benyamin, on a rainy Sunday morning and it was a mild yet a befitting read amidst what all I am devouring by the days and the nights. Kasol was my favorite chapter, I once knew someone like Uncle Carlos and sometimes I found someone resembling a lot like Sandhya. Both these characters were a pull in. What was a pull out was the storytelling. It was new, unhackneyed, avant-garde but a bit boring. I did mind the extra effort by the author to do justice to each memory and each stride. I marked some great references in the book to be revisited later, so like that, I was drawn to the next and next of the precipitation which the beginning unfolded. I read the book in one go, my days have surely became accountable to not the clock's ticks but the pages flips. I think the only sane association I have these days is with books which haven't been read much or are new to the world, I feel like a foster mother, holding a baby a day. A book a day.
