Return to Camdeboo: A centuryʼs Karoo foods and flavours

Rate this book
This is not a cookery book, although recipes are included. It is a book about food.'This is how it happened. I had been planning a book on plants, and in between notes for this, I had been collecting recipes, for the benefit of children, and grandchildren, of the farm food we had enjoyed on my old Karoo home Cranemere between Graaff-Reinet and Somerset East on the plains of Camdeboo. Our family has been there since 1880, so the food goes back over a hundred years.'My family thought it was a marvellous idea and soon I was collecting not only recipes, but thinking back to their history and associations, and the triumphs and hardships that had accompanied them. It was a rich haul, and I decided then and there to add these to the recipes, so that in a poor benighted fast-food-world they, grandchildren and great grand-ones, would know what, on Cranemere, it had all been about!
