Reviver Trilogy #3

The Dead Road

Rate this book

Following Reviver and Lost Souls, The Dead Road is the chilling conclusion to Seth Patrick’s Reviver Trilogy.

The series takes place in our world, but with a chilling twist: certain people have the ability to wake the recently deceased for testimony that is accepted in courts worldwide. The use of these so-called Revivers has long been a routine part of police investigation. But things are changing . . . something vast and dangerous is hiding in the dark, just waiting to wreak havoc on our world.

The Dead Road is where it all comes to an end - maybe literally.

The Dead Road is Lovecraftian apocalyptic horror that caught my interest. Most of the book kept me stuck to the pages until the end. I am not certain what Seth Patrick wanted from the other world the Beast came from—more Lovecraft type gods, or demons and angels. Even Greek mythology had been mixed in the tale. And a bit of the last part of the book was too simple, the winning was too easy. Which is why I gave the novel 4 and not 5.

Very disappointing. It was mostly a recap of the two previous books, explaining what had happened before, and the current threat seamed pretty easy to fix and there were no suspense at all. Not at all what I had expected, meh :(

I did not think much of this book. It is the last book in a trilogy but stands weakly on its own. Rather slow developing and then a very shaky convoluted conclusion. Nothing very different or even fun. Really the book was a downer and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Overall, I enjoyed this final chapter of the Reviver trilogy, but there are some issues that I have with it that took a little of the shine off for me.

The first two books came in at well over 350 pages. This one was only 275. What's up with that? I know the length of a book isn't everything, but it felt like this entry could have stood another 50 pages of material. It just didn't feel like there was enough meat on the bones. Even the title, "The Dead Road", was brought up early on, but then forgotten.

Adding to that "not fully fleshed" feeling was the ending. I'm not talking about the epilogue. I'm talking about the blink and you miss it ending of the Beast. It was a pretty easy, wrapped up in a bow, conclusion to something that had wiped out worlds.

The trilogy is a fun read. Be prepared, though. The story that you start with and the story that you end with are completely different. It's the same characters and all, but there is a definite warping of the tale.

I enjoyed the first two books in the series far more than the final. Most of the book was rehashing what happened in the first two. The ending felt rushed and the final battle ended so very quickly. It also didn’t seem to wrap up nicely, with a whole lot of loose ends left unexplained. I’d still read another book by the author but had higher expectations than this.

Urban Fantasy / Horror

So, it didn't tell me in the book that this was Book #3 of a trilogy and I picked it up at the library because it looked interesting.

I was very confused at the beginning, but the author actually did a pretty good job re-introducing the characters. I felt there was some lack of character building, but this most definitely happened in the previous novels that I did not read.

Despite not reading the previous two books, I really really wish I had. There were moments of this book that I entered a reading-trance and just wanted to keep reading. Shame I spoiled the ending - maybe I'll revisit the trilogy later on and read it properly - I would've liked to see how he introduced the characters and fantastical bits of the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series. The first was definitely the better of all of them. This third instalment felt very rushed, as though the author just wanted to end the series, or perhaps was not able to write the full third book as intended. I think this series should have ended at book 2, which would have been a satisfying conclusion and if had been made a conclusive ending. I still enjoyed it. I loved the world that Seth Patrick created, the details put into the whole revival process, the politics about it. I loved the creepy atmosphere akin to watching a ghostly horror movie. Some of the plot with the beast just felt a bit meh, but otherwise I did enjoy reading this trilogy. Thank you to Seth Patrick for writing this really cool story.

It turns out that being able to wake up the recently dead is not as pleasant and relaxing as it sounds.

This one is the third in a trilogy, so read the first two first -- Seth Patrick's "Reviver" and "Lost Souls" are a blend of crime drama and supernatural action. The key to the story's success is that way-out mystical stuff seems to be the most natural thing.

None of it is presented as fun or zany like "Dresden Files." This world is brutal and tough, like "Law and Order" without the order. The author displays the world he has created with intense emotional stakes -- and the demon fighting is cool, too.

What a piece of art! Although the “Dead Road” was NOT my favorite in the trilogy, and was not my favorite to read, it is the only “almost recommendable” novel in this trilogy. It had a stronger balance than the previous books. After reading this book I could tell the author had a clear direction on where he wanted to take the reader, I believe the author also steered himself into a better writing style as this trilogy matured. And I loved it! However this book was the least fun to read, since it filled in the small remaining holes and gaps of questions the readers had. This book could have been much shorter! I’m very happy I got to the end of this trilogy, it was fun while it lasted.

I have loved this trilogy. Interesting catchy plot, easy to read but able to stir emotions. Definitely one of those books that hard to put down. I'm not sure what to compare it to for those who may be interested. I'd suggest simply picking it up if you like sci fi, fantasy, thrillers, gothicy dark stuff. It's always sad to end a book i enjoy esp. a continuation I've been waiting to come out for years, but this, I feel, ended in an appropriate tone, with something to take back, out of the world of fiction and in to the real world.

I so enjoyed this entire series. The style of writing is easy to read and easy to get lost in, the characters are well developed, and the storyline itself keeps you on your toes. Usually, in my experience, the second and third books in a series are just trying to drag along a success recipe that is gleaned from Book 1.
I highly recommend this entire series.

I devoured the first two books in one sitting and did the same with this one. Patrick has built a complex, haunting world with this series, all the while mixing supernatural with human emotion. I can't wait to see what Seth Patrick has lined up for the future.

I liked the book but enjoyed the first two much more. It felt rushed and somehow incomplete. I wish it had been longer. I felt a little cheated with how short it was.

I loved and thoroughly enjoyed all three books but so upset that there are no more to read from this series. I hope Seth Patrick continues the reviver stories someday soon.

3.7 stars-- enjoyable finish to an interesting concept and book series. Again, the narrator was phenomenal!

I felt with each book the plot got thinner. The ending was anticlimactic. The big bad was too easy to vanquish. Lots of recap in this book. The concept was good but under developed.
