“I have to stay and clean up this mess. It’s the only way I’ll ever be free of this family. Righting the wrongs of my father is the only way to earn my freedom.”Lane is trying to keep everything together. He has effectively taken on the role as ‘head of the family’ and he’s struggling, but making progress and doing the best he can. It seems like everything is stacked against him, but I admired his tenaciously. He never gives up no matter how hopeless the situations may look. I also love the relationship he has with Lizzie. I love them together. I also like his friend Jeff and the role he played in this book. And Mack too!
“You’re better than this. You deserve better than this… You’re priceless, Gin, no matter what’s in your bank account.”
“What else am I supposed to do?”
“Call the f*cking Feds! Be normal instead of some kind of Kentucky Fried Tony Soprano!”

“The problem with your sister…” Samuel T. tapped his temple. “Is that as flawed as she is, no one ever compares to her.”
“You can call me,” he said roughly. “Anytime. I know you and I haven’t made sense. We’re bad for each other in all the ways that count, but you can call me. Day or night. No matter where you are, I’ll come for you. I won’t ask for any explanations. I won’t yell at you or berate you. I won’t judge you--and if you insist, I won’t tell Lane or anybody else.”
“The thing is, I just….I need to tell you that the idea of anyone, and I don’t care who the fuck it is, striking you or yanking you or...oh, G-d, I can’t bear to think of what else…”
As a tear escaped down her cheek, he brushed it away, and his voice cracked. “You’re better than this. You deserve better than this. Your family’s glorious past is not worth a man hitting you in the present just because you’re afraid you won’t be anything without money. You’re priceless, Gin, no matter what’s in your bank account.”

He needed to recharge his strength, his hope, and his heart with times and memories like this with his Lizzie. He had battles to fight, and questions as to whether he was worthy, and worries about what was coming ahead. But she gave him the power to be the warrior he wanted and needed to be. Forget the money… Everything he really had to have in life was right here in his arms.
“I wish I could give you what you deserve. I truly do. You are . . . one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. And I should have told you that sooner. I wish had. I wish I had . . . well, done a lot of things. But it’s just . . . life has changed for me, as you know. I’m never going to be what I once was. The things I used to do, the person I used to be…….”
Theirs had always been a love affair that was like a bad intersection with no traffic light, crashes time and time again, sparks, the scent of gasoline, burned-up, tangled metal and rubber everywhere. They were safety glass busted into a spider’s web of cracks, air bags deployed, tires popped and sagged.
Nine times out of ten, Max was the one who got that ball rolling, whether it was setting fireworks off from the roof of the garage, or riding a horse in through Easterly’s front door, or taking one of the family cars and going four-by-fouring in the cornfields down below the hill.
Lane knew he, personally, was forever changed by all this …. No matter the ins and outs, and the drama and the pain, he knew he was better off as a man…. The nature of the aging process was brutal, though, and yes, he felt like he had lost parts of himself along the way. The angels had to have their share, however, as was their right and their due. And at least those parts of his soul would be in good hands, forevermore.
