Modernisme

Rate this book
Considered the Catalan equivalent of the Art Nouveau, Modernisme was an artistic movement of great beauty that reached its peak in Barcelona around the late 19th century and the early 20th century, coinciding with a period of profound social, economic and technological changes.

Modernisme encompassed all artistic disciplines, though its presence was particularly felt in architecture. Figures such as Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Maria Jujol closely collaborated with the top craftsmen of the time to construct buildings bursting with fantasy and imagination, which placed Barcelona at the forefront of the international artistic panorama.

This photography book gathers all the most emblematic works of modernist architecture, such as la Pedrera, the Palau de la Música Catalana, Casa Lleó i Morera and Casa Amatller. The book also explores the historical origins of Modernisme, and analyses its impact on fields such as jewellery, sculpture and decorative arts. The reader can therefore have a global vision of this unique movement, which ended up converting into a sign of identity of a period characterised by its thirst for innovation.
