Is love worth taking a risk when nothing is certain?
Tess Monroe is starting a new chapter in her life—or, at least, she hopes she is. After quitting her tedious, dead-end job, Tess has some time on her hands before her new career starts, and she’s determined to make the most of it.
As a congratulations gift from her family, Tess receives a week’s retreat: a guided hike up to an exclusive yoga resort in the mountains. She’s certain this will be her chance for a fresh start, but the trip begins on a bad note when an unexpected storm turns the leisurely hike into a dangerous ordeal. When Tess slips off the steep, icy trail, her vacation and her life are in jeopardy...until she falls straight into the strong, capable arms of the world's hottest park ranger: Remy Labelle.
Remy is a bold, intelligent woman with a cutting wit, and her striking features and smoldering smirk make Tess go weak in the knees. But Remy has a huge chip on her shoulder about the yoga resort, and Tess never takes chances when it comes to romance. Still, Tess can’t deny the incendiary spark between them, and she finds herself questioning her rigid expectations of what a perfect romance must be.
As things keep going wrong on Tess’s vacation, she and Remy grow closer and passions flare. But Remy’s past—and the manipulations of Melissa, the resort’s manager, who clearly has a hold over Remy—threatens to get in the way. Will Tess overcome her fear of heartbreak to try a relationship with Remy? And even if she does, can Remy drop her barriers and allow herself to love again?
Marian Snowe is an author of lesbian romantic fiction. She can often be found talking to trees, examining flower petals with a magnifying glass, or venturing with small steps into the frigid New England ocean. She lives with her vivacious, adventure-loving wife, Ruby Grandin, and two cats. She loves to settle down in a meadow or at her desk by a window (with a good view of the birdfeeder!) to write stories about ladies in love.
“The Mountain Between Us” intrigued me because of the many similarities with Bridget Essex’s “A Wolf for Valentine’s Day”.
No, there’s no werewolf here, but there is
• A woman disillusioned with where she is at this point in life; she doesn’t like who she’s become • A mysterious and gorgeous superfit woman • A secluded yoga retreat high up a mountain • Bad weather
What there also is, that was missing from “A Wolf”, is a real sense of joy listening to the very likable MCs Tess and Remy banter and flirt as they get to know each other while being brought together frequently by unexpected circumstances, and while being kept apart by a jealous ex.
The secondary characters in “The Mountain Between Us” are terrific too. We have Tess’ friend Emily, resort maintenance man Glenn and his dog, desk clerk Marty, and a gaggle of hilarious new-age yoga enthusiasts.
The interactions between Tess and Remy are super cute, despite Remy frequently infuriating Tess with mixed signals. Tess is particularly delightful. Despite not liking who’s she’s allowed herself to become, she radiates optimism and excitement for the future as she seeks to once again be like “college Tess”, who she remembers as being brave, took chances and had a fire for life. Well, that certainly describes our Tess on the mountain well!
This is a very fun book, but one of the funniest sections was probably unintentional. Suddenly, during a snowstorm emergency, one tank of gas from a lawnmower is obtained and hot showers are suddenly plentiful, the resort pool is heated and the hot tub is soon working! Was that magic gasoline? 🙄
I was, as I said earlier, intrigued by “The Mountain Between Us”, but I was also unsure whether I wanted to try it. The only other book I’ve listened to by Snowe (“Heart of Glass”) was disappointing, as was the Essex book that has so many similar elements. Also, this is my first time listening to this narrator. Well, with books as with people, sometimes one just has to take a chance…and I’m really glad I did!
The characters, story and witty banter (I love witty banter!) was terrific, and Lillis turns out to be a wonderful narrator. 4.25* for the book, with an extra ½* for the narration, rounded up to 5* - highly recommended; I’ll re-listen to “The Mountain Between Us” myself when I want a cheerful book that will make me smile.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
My rating and my review was not in anyway affected by my having been provided a review copy.
I really enjoyed this story. The synopsis is accurate enough if you want a feel for the story. In short, it's a romance that boils with chemistry between Tess and Remi but the obtacles keeps it from fully exploding off the bat...and mean three crazy filled days. Regardless, this is not a uhaul type romance and I think that's why I ultimately liked it. A good amount of the book is Tess's inner dialogue and insecurities but it didn't bog the story down...it helped add to her character. Personally, I really liked Marti...she was just so sweet and I wouldn't mind reading a story with her at the center. Anyway, it was free on kindleUnlimited and edited pretty well. The writing itself as well as the story was up there if not better than some stuff you may be forced to pay for...so why the hell not give it a read... But honestly, I think it was worth it.
Tess is making a new life for herself but before she starts this new beginning, Tess heads to an idyllic resort for a couple of days. She imagines a more relaxing trip than she gets. On a short track she meets the most gorgeous woman she's ever seen. This first encounter was hilarious. Often love is complicated by our past and Remy has been deeply hurt in the past. She finds it hard to trust. Protecting herself, she has built a wal around her heart. It's also not easy for Tess. She is scared to reveal her feelings and she only wants a perfect relationship. Is a perfect relationship realistic? A mountain of obstacles are standing between them. I love Remy's attitude, the way she cares for others, how she shows her feelings. The dynamic of the main characters is heartwarming. The story is imaginative and fast paced. The scenery and settings came alive in this story. The characters were fun and I felt an immediate connection with them. All in all, a heartwarming feel-good story. I can recommend it to anyone.
Actually it's much more than good, it's excellent. It's funny, it's accident prone and light hearted. It's really well written and the authors talent for sarcasm is exceptional. Just how I like my humour. There are many twists and turns. The characters are very realistic. If you want a light hearted, good read then this book is for you. I couldn't put it down. It kept me smiling from page one. Enjoy, I certainly did. It was my first by this author but it definitely won't be my last.
This took me a week to read and it is only 184 pages long.
I normally like works by this author but most of what I found, from the moody smirking immature characters to ... other stuff, annoyed me greatly from beginning to end
Love in the Mountains Tess is at a crossroads in her life. She has just quit her job and before she starts her new one she is going on a week-long yoga resort. Part of the activities includes a hike up a mountain to get to the lodge. Along the way trouble ensues, the weather turns dangerous and Tess injures herself. Things would be much worse if not for the sexy park ranger Remy who happens along at the right time. The attraction between the two women is intense but neither is ready to take a chance. Stuck together at the lodge, things keep getting worse and the women are drawn more closely to each other. Can they overcome all the obstacles in the way or are they destined to live in their past fears?
What a lovely romance!! It is sooo good! I loved Remy and Tess. They are feisty and strong but have doubts, fear and pain, yet go on anyway. The adventures these two get up to are exciting and this is really everything a good and sweet romance novel should be. There is attraction, danger, drama, a bit of humour, lust, jealousy, pain and finally love… sigh…. So perfect… It’s fun and light and really worth the read!!! You can’t go wrong with this one.
Honestly? This book was an absolute pleasure to read. It was a simple story with some adventure and a little bit of angst in there for good measure. It was just one of those stories that's pretty relatable and that you wish for it to happen in your future.
Wasn't feeling this one, though I hoped I'd like it. I also couldn't warm up to Tess. She had something to prove, constantly, even if no one asked her to. She fell in love and was infatuated so quickly it felt a little uncomfortable to read. This only spans a week or less, but I believe it was the fourth day she confessed she was in love and barely knew anything of substance about Remy. Melissa was less of a villain and more of a nuisance.
3.5 maybe? I got bored at 70% done. Only finished because it said I didn't have much longer to go. By 85% I was over it. Ending felt spastic, slapped together or something. Idk, hated the pacing of it. Another book where the issues between the characters magically disappear when they probably shouldn't have.
I got this one on Audible and I'm so glad I did! Marian is an amazing writer and Tess is such a relatable character that it sounded like she was writing about me. Remy is so wonderfully deep, with so many fragments making up one character. The slow burn romance is enticing, and so satisfying when it climaxes. Definitely a great read!
Mooshy love story. The "mountain" of fear slowly gets eroded until the path they walk together is relatively flat and not treacherous. I loved it. Easy to read, nice twists occasionally, fun story.
I've read a few of Marian Snowe's books now and this has got to be one of my favorites so far! It's super sweet and lovely and I fell in love with the characters!
Suggest read this one a lot spark, and falling down so good and boss who is so terrible thing and jealous and she lost her position and respect and etc
The ending itself is almost a little 'too perfect' with how everything falls into place in regards to Melissa, but other than that it is a good story. It leans a little hard on tropes, but I still enjoyed it immensely.

I really enjoyed reading Prairie Heart. The end of a novel is expected, but you can enjoy a lot of ups and down before it unveils. Every book of Marian Snowe is a real pleasure to read :-)
