2.5 solid witchy stars! The Lost Witch isn’t a bad book and it was actually quite an enjoyable read for me. That being said, it wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be. TLW follows Tegan and her love interest, Tennessee,on the journey to complete a quest to find a locket. This locket is the Hierophant’s locket. The Hierophant is basically the psychic for the Coven aka a group of witches who each fulfill a place in the Coven based off the Major Arcana in tarot. So this sounds pretty interesting, right? Yes! The only problem was the execution. This book had so much potential but failed at living up to said potential. TLW is a book I enjoyed despite its low rating and I will be continuing the series.

It seemed like Chandelle didn’t understand who her audience was. This book is pretty basic in terms of complexity and I felt that us readers could have handled more. The characters for one could have also handled more. Everything was handed to them on a silver platter and there was hardly any struggle save for the scenes where Tennessee had to save Tegan(more on that later). This book read more as a novella than a full-length novel to kick of the series. Oddly it reminded of Middle Book Syndrome except this was the first book. If the author wanted this to be action packed or complex, she failed with character development and world-building. The plot was bearable but we’ll get to that in a second.

Characters
These characters weren’t fleshed. This book seemed very pantsed to me as if the author went in without knowing exactly who the characters were besides a few traits. The characters were often described as “powerful”, a “firecracker”, or in Royce’s case “gay”. Yeah, that’s a thing. Royce was constantly, in nearly every single chapter, referenced as gay. Uh….yeah. We all know what’s wrong with that but if you don’t: GAY CHARACTERS ARE MORE THAN JUST GAY AND SHOULD BE WRITTEN AS SUCH. Anyhoo, let’s go onto our main characters because everyone else is pretty much irrelevant or the same. Seriously, this entire “quest” could have easily been completed without the rest of the Coven which by the way is mostly teenagers(??? why???).

Tegan, our female MC, isn’t the stronk female uwu character that we usually get. In fact, she’s not afraid to be weak of fear for her life which is refreshing. What annoys me about her is how she is always saved. Much like Clary Fray from the Mortal Instruments, Tegan is just thrown into things and hasn’t been given any training at all. Somehow, she manages to find out tons of clues that help forward the plot and of course, because like every paranormal book ever, she’s a chosen one with tons of power(uwu). Now Tegan, I think, has a lot of potential. I just wished the author developed her more or any of the characters more. They had no passions, interests, or goals outside of the plot nor did they go beyond any traits that were listed on the page. I enjoyed their witty banter and the relationships but they really fell flat for me.

Moving onto our male MC, Tennessee wasn’t all that bad. Except for the part where he is soulmates with Tegan, met her like 2 days ago and has already fallen in love with her. This is why I hate the soulmate trope. It’s a cheap cop out for authors to get straight to the romance instead of developing to romance slowly. Can we end this trope, please? What I did like about the romance and Tennessee, insta-love and all is that it wasn’t toxic. He wasn’t some strong male who was so masculine all the other gentlemales(yes that’s a reference to Sarah J Maas and yes I’m salty) quivered in sight of him. He was gentle and strong and a bit OP but overall an okay character. I didn’t actually hate the romance in one of these books for once.

In short: the characters needed to be developed further, the romance wasn’t that bad, and I’d like to think I enjoyed them. Maybe I will be interested in their storylines should they be fleshed out...

Plot:
The plot was the most disappointing thing of this novel. It fell flat, was rushed, and there was utterly no struggle for the characters. Everything was handed on a silver platter and towards the end wrapped up quickly. If this was simply a novella in between the main stories, I wouldn’t be surprised. Alas, it’s the first novel and a disappointing one at that. It was just too rushed for me. It seemed like it was starting at strong but as we neared the end and the novel was over what I felt was “that was it?”. It just seriously needed help. It wasn’t strong at all not to mention there were a few loose threads that I hoped are cleared up in future novels.

World:
Finally, some good content. The world, while poorly fleshed out and bare bones was exciting. Though it did seem that towards the end, some things were thrown in there and these supposedly powerful witches didn’t even know some of the topics of the world. It wasn't just learning about the world as you go but like seriously these kids who completed quite a few things didn’t know these beings existed. Yeah...So again, the world was barely fleshed out and I blame that on the plot. The plot wasn’t fleshed out and there was no time to lay down the foundation of what we really needed to know so how could we the readers even learn about the world? It has tons of potential and some elements I have not seen before. Also, I think magic was used as a crutch in this world and didn’t really have that many consequences besides“omg you’ll get tired and maybe die but we also have healing magic so no dying just yet!”. So that’s fun. Anyways, the world was my favorite part of this story but just needs to be fleshed out.

So my review may sound like I don’t like this book but I actually do and plan to read the rest of the series. It seems fun, an easy way to keep my GR challenge up, and something I don’t have to fully commit to all while enjoying the benefits of reading a series. TLW had great ideas and amazing elements to it however it seemed the author rushed it. If there’s a future book to come(not including any of those already published) I hope the author sees this and makes the proper corrections to make the other books better. If you enjoyed this book, please give it a like, discuss your thoughts in the comments below, and follow me here on Goodreads for more reviews!
Review TLDR: lots of potential and needs work despite having some good content in it.

I liked this one, but I was confused for a lot of it. She just accepts she has a new step family she's never met before? But her younger brother knows them without mentioning how? Also, Tegan was way too accepting of everything happening around her. At points I kept expecting her to react, ask questions, or just do anything other than go along with the others. It was a little disorienting to follow.

I’m crying, yep crying!!! But I can’t tell you why.! ( I hate leaving spoilers) For someone to be able to write words that portrays emotions so well that I could actually feel them in my own heart is amazing, I actually feel in awe to them, because it must be one of the most difficult tasks an author has to do. They can have a great storyline but without forming that connection to its reader, it would fail. Here in this novel you have it all, a great storyline, magic, tension, puzzles, bravery, resentment, secrets, running alongside love, friendship, community, laughter and many more, all built around two main characters that have different chapters with their own POV and feelings regarding mainly the other, but also you can see how there mind works and thinks regarding the world around them and the tasks they have been given. There are other characters that support them both and help support the story as you also learn of there roles in this world that is built around them, with some being family that is certainly not typical. The world they live in feels real, the different plots are easy to see, again that’s all the creative imagination of the author. I read the novella The Chosen Witch which gives you more information about Tennessee and how he came to be, that also was really good. I am loving this series and can’t wait to read the next book

Mon avis en Français

My English review

It had been a while since I had read an urban fantasy novel and when I discovered this series, I was curious to discover this novel.

I admit that I did not expect to find a young adult novel and the characters are indeed 17 years old. But the mix is quite surprising with the young characters and the story that may seem a bit too adult for them.

This aside, I had a good time with the novel and we discover Tegan, but also Tennessee who seem to meet in the strangest places. But now, it seems that Tegan is much more than she thought. In fact, she could even be a powerful witch. Yet, this news comes with other problems when she realizes that she has to save the world with other Coven people and find a very important medallion.

It was a nice novel even though I was not completely convinced. I had a good time and the ideas are nice even though I would have liked a little more understanding of their family’s stories. I do not know yet if I’ll read more, but I’m curious to see more events for the characters.

I really love the idea of the cards. I'm hoping for more about how the coven works and the cards different magic in book 2. Also, the theme park. I feel like it's an important location, but book 1 didn't give much info.
On to "The Brave Witch".

Tegan and Tenesse are going to be a long drawn out will they wont they..... For no real reason... So i will probably stop this series here.... I like a man to have cahoones and take what he wants... Not shy from it.

I loved the Tarot connection i thought it was really clever, but not being familiar with the cards i would have liked a description and how current characters powers relate.

The story was ok, it didn't blow my socks off... But wasn't boring either....

The characters were really only skimmed apart from the twins and Tennese who we got a closer look at but still not really in-depth.... The characters act out with no explanation as to why they are like it.

2.5 im pulling it down the middle.

Nice start to the series.

I'm curious to see how Tegan and her sister cope when they discover they are related.

I'm also curious about the soul mates thing. I think this could have done with being longer but that could be because I flew through it.

This was a great start to the series. I love witch books, and this one was really fun with creative magic. Tennessee and Tegan are so cute! I love how the twins take learning about what they are in stride and willingly go on the quest to find the locket. The quest was really fun to read too, it wasn't just a pointless journey like a lot of books have, but they ran into all kinds of interesting stuff on the way. It reminded me more of the kind of journey from Magnus Chase. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series and more from this author!

I liked the realistic characters and their interesting supernatural talents. The quest plot was straightforward. The romance was cute in a LFS kind of way.

What i did NOT like was the insufficient information about the characters’ relationships. Who is actually related? The bit about a stepmother was sudden and lacked ANY explanation. Tegan goes to a party has an interesting time and then boom! She has moved to Florida and has a stepmother she’s NEVER met. Ummmm, usually stepmothers are introduced before the wedding or moving in together parts. Did a chapter fall out of my kindle book??? There is ZERO explanation about dad’s relationship with “stepmother” and it really seems like she’s NOT a STEPmother at all considering Emersyn and Tegan are TWINS. Readers don’t even know what happened to her biological mother. Honestly, a single sentence about how her mom died when she was 7, and about how her dad had been dating this woman for a month and had run off and got married in Vegas would have satisfied me, but no. Nothing. And they have a brother, who is the son of her Uncle? All of those terms are thrown around the whole book and NEVER explained. Infuriating and confusing. How can i care about characters when I don’t even know who they are??? This issue almost earned this book a zero star rating and a listing on my Do Not Read Authors list. I kept looking for explanations and never got them.

Also this book had an abrupt ending. Not like, well now that our quest has been completed, let’s go home and start on the next. Nope. Just a quote of prophecy and... read the next book in this “fantastic” series! Nope. Honestly, i don’t know if i can. There was such poor world building. The characters get no explanation and neither do the readers.

Editing missed several glaring errors. Needs another pass.

***** 5 Amazing Stars *****

What a great start to an exciting new series. This was a very fresh new take on witches. Absolutely loved the whole Tarot Card for each witches role in The Coven. There are prophetic riddles, quests, action, adventure, romance and demons to battle. I have to warn you the romance is insta-love but I didn't care, it was done really well. I mean soul mates who are forbidden it was deliciously torturous. I can't say I can't wait to see what happens next because I've already read books 2,3 and 4. So I can say they just get better and better and better.

This series is a highly recommend!

Okay... So I've already read Betinna's story before coming onto this one.

Though, this book was fast paced and the nice part is that there aren't any holes in the story.

Like the other books I've read, I expected it to be slow paced where the protagonist takes a bit time to discover her powers. But considering how wild Tegan was, it was no surprise that she took a hang of it quickly.

Tegan, the female protagonist, has always wanted to be a witch.. And i can totally relate with her, so connecting with her felt natural. She's smart, adventurous, pretty and powerful.

Tenn, the male protagonist, our emperor, is courageous, responsible, caring, powerful and a born leader.

I don't quite understand what's the harm in letting Tegan, Em and Tenn date. It won't possibly cause any harm right? Well nonetheless, the book was great. Great display of friendship. No hard feelings just pure affection and care.

Starts with a bang and just keeps going.

FYI - in my reviews I try to avoid spoilers. This is my overall opinion of the story and how it played out.

By the time you reach the end of this book you'll no doubt empathise with Tegan and Emersyn. From the very beginning they've fallen right into the middle of everything with no choice but to keep moving forward with only the barest of answers to all their questions of why. To their credit, they accept their new roles willing, although when the get a chance to breathe, they might feel differently. The Coven is a different take on wiccan hierarchy that I've never read before. I love how Chandelle has tied it with the Arcana and formed a governing body that's not just based on bloodlines, but a balance of magical skills and temperments. As this review comes after my second reading of the book, I now understand more than I did the first time, and like I said, you will likely have a million unanswered questions. My advice? Keep reading. I've read the entire series, and I can promise it's worth it.

Originally read the second series first about Bettina but felt like I should have read this one first due to references constantly made in that series. Things are starting to make sense now so can’t wait to read both series in the order they were meant to be read in

I loved this story even better than the first and I can’t wait till the next in the series comes out. It’s hard enough to be a teen but to be the soul mate of the one you cannot have and having to work together makes it even harder. I’m very curious how this will play out. I’m curious about Emersyn’s role. Not much has been said at this point. It was really great how the coven accepted the girls and made them feel part of the family right from the beginning. As always, things never go as planned so the slow introduction into what they are did not happen. They were thrown straight into the quests. I have so many unanswered questions that the next books will finally answer. This is a can’t put down series.

This is a very good story with a great mix of action and romance. She is learning of a whole new world out there and also finding love for the first time. It is a difficult journey for her.

The author does a great job of putting you right into the story and keeping your interest. The love story is sweet and intense. You will definitely want to read more to see what is next in her journey.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

rcvd an advanced reader copy for giving my two cents. We meet Tegan and her bff on their way to the woods to take part in The Gathering. While trying to find their way they run into other kids as well. Emersyon, another girl with the other group helps them to the clearing where they see a lot of people. legend has it that the place is haunted. while having fun, things get super scary with ghosts appearing and wicked winds picking people off one by one. the next thing tegan sees is a gorgeous man with one blue and one green eye and is immediately drawn to him and he rescues them. they manage to leave the gathering and all tegan can think about is the hot stranger. Tennessee is the Emperor in the Coven, the token leader due to his power and rank but doesnt want the responsibility. after rescuing the dark haired beauty at the gathering he cant stop thinking about her. the coven is prepared for the arrival of the twins everntho they dont know who they are yet. things go from bad go worse when tegan is informed on her bday no less that they are moving to florida and will gain a stepmother and sister....oh great. when they arrive, she sees her brother super happy to see his mom and when her dad tells her to come meet them, she is immediately taken aback at her new sister...its non other than Emeryson!! WHT!! tegan overhears her dad and new stepmom having a heated conversation about how they arent ready. well that sets forth tegan and emeryson's journey to the find the truth. while being attacked a sword wiedling man saves them and its HIM...from the gathering. they are staring at one another and then boom...kissing! Tennessee cant believe its her and her kissed her!! what is she doing her? Pain erupts and Tennessee looks at the brand on his chest to see is the mark of the soul mate.....his mystery girl is his soulmate.. can things get any more complicated? will Tegan find out who her mystery guy is? will their destiny bring them together or tear them apart? can tegan and emeryson handle the truth?

I’m new to this author and this is my 1st read and review for Chandelle LaVaun. I read the blurb to this book and I decided to give it a try and I’m so glad I did, it was a fantastic read. Fantastic read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely the one to keep your eyes out for and it’s well worth the read.

This was an interesting read. Unfortunately I feel like so much was packed into the first book that it’s a little hard to process. The blurb was a little misleading in that it states the coven refuses to teach her magic that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. More like they are ill equipped to teach her her form of magic so it’s more of a trial and error. Everything happens so fast it seems as tho the main story takes place over a span of hours in which all of the characters are battling a part of their quest so no one really has time to explain her magic nor has the knowledge to do so. I didn’t understand really the need for the male MC and FMC to be kept apart since it wasn’t really ever explained. Also the familial connections were slightly confusing. The new stepmother that just pops in with her “twin?” It wasn’t ever explained. Also the fact that her uncle is coven leader and her cousins are in the coven except she doesn’t even know their her cousins? The familial ties really threw me. I even reread some of the beginning thinking I must have missed some description or backstory and there wasn’t any. I do like tarot card characters tho I haven’t read many books where they are used other than in a prophecy type capacity. There isn’t really any backstory as to why the “twins” have been kept apart from the coven or what happened to the FMC’s mom or really what’s going on with that. I’m having trouble getting past it.

Cliffhanger warning!

First, there is a prequel novella that needs to be read before this story, the author has it on her site, go get it!
Second, this book ends on a cliffhanger, as in the adventurers are in the middle of something when it ends. If you don’t like cliffhangers, make sure you have the next book ready and lined up!
Now, this book tells the story from the alternating points of view of Tegan (our heroine) and Tennessee (our hero). The first scenes in the book are Tegan’s viewpoint of the events that occurred in the prequel novella, which was all from Tennessee’s POV.
Tegan has no idea that she has power, and when she is suddenly introduced to the magical world, she deals with it like a boss. She’s always been drawn to magic and witchcraft, so it doesn’t phase her much.
The thing is, you know a lot more about Tegan than she knows about herself, and by the end of the book she STILL doesn’t know very much, and there are one or two huge secrets left to be revealed.
This series is more of a serial storyline than a series, as each book is far from being standalone, in fact they carry on where the last one left off.
It’s well written, and entertaining, but I can’t help wondering if the main characters will ever learn the important things about themselves that they are still clueless about!
If you enjoy swords and sorcery style fantasy in a modern setting, and the serialized story format, then you’ll enjoy this book.

Tegan is turning sixteen and she and a friend go into the forest to see The Gathering. Evil beings attack the group, though, and from that point on her life changes.

Turns out she's a witch but her powers have not yet been unlocked. Tennessee is a member of the coven and becomes the person she ends up romantically attached to even though they theoretically are not allowed to do anything major along those lines.

Then there's The Hidden Kingdom (an amusement park) where things get really bad for her. Here's where things get kind of odd. Seems there's a group who had number on their hands, the numbers linking to the Major Arcana in tarot. No sooner does she find out about being a witch and maybe a member of the coven then she's sent on her first quest.

She and the others have to find a locket. Along the way they will have to deal with sirens, various monsters, having to go deep under water, finding the locket and somehow get back in one piece.

I don't see why the tarot was brought into the story, though. I just don't see what that has to do with anything. The members have numbers and designations, yes, but it's sort of artificial to link them to the tarot. It seems kind of limiting and I think would require a lot of difficulty trying to find a new person who has the exact requirements of that particular number.

I also think the 'we can't be together' aspect was overdone.

it was just ok

As previous reviews have said, everything is so convenient. The soulmate connection literally makes Tegan and Tennessee mindless idiots but of course they can’t be together because reasons. You never find out why Emersyn and Tegan weren’t told they were witches. Never find out why their parents separated them at birth and why their older brother knows about them and they know nothing about him. Everyone is winking at each other and giving thumbs up. I suppose it’s a decent start to a series but the characters needed more building up. Of course Tegan always wanted to be a witch her whole life but her dad would get mad if he saw her with anything witchy but we never know why. Of course she’s the most powerful witch 🙄 and can control all the elements. Everything is all convenient and completed with barely any drama. Next book will likely be more blathering internal monologue from the two of them about how they can’t control themselves around each other

I just thought about something. White supremacist entitlement is so strong. Like I am sure the author of this series doesn’t think she is racist, but she decided that the genocide of an indigenous tribe was okay to include in her plot. These witches slaughtered a whole ass tribe! With all the magic, there was no other way? So, now I’m going to change all my ratings on her books. I mean I’m used to BIPOC erasure in white fiction, so it doesn’t make me angry there’s only one Puerto Rican character in the series. But, to slaughter a whole ass tribe!? As a Black woman with indigenous ancestry, I have to speak on it, despite enjoying the series otherwise.

Amazing, action packed mystical quest adventure, with a side of romance brewing. Loved the story and as a Teacher of Tarot I was impressed with how the Tarot Archetypes were interwoven into the characters through their appearance, character and magical gifts. Again so much going on, I had to read it over two days so I was not overwhelmed. Can't wait to get to next story in series, The Brave Witch.
