This is a good solid read with a lot of heat, angst and tears. Seth and Jared were sort of friends in high school, but then were driven apart. Now, eleven years later, the two reconnect when Seth returns to his home town after a near fatal shooting. Because of that event he has also become the parent of two kids, Ally and Lucas. The kids are biologically his, but who were supposed to get adopted by his friends who couldn’t conceive, but who died in the accidental shooting. Seth is starting a new bakery in town, and Jared’s sister is getting married, so they require his services. That’s how the two men meet again. Old flames get reignited, and second chances are given.
What happened eleven years ago is still fresh in everyone’s mind, including the horrible insane woman, Becky, who wants Jared for herself, and who with the help of her brother drove the pair apart back in the day. Lies and misunderstandings start getting sorted out, but old foes won’t let go so easily. It seemed evil people and fate conspired to break the aspiring couple apart, then AND now. Becky’s decline to insanity to threaten Seth AND the kids could become a hurdle too great to get past.
That’s a lot of adversities to overcome. But Seth and Jared get down to business too, and start talking, opening up past lies, and having phenomenal sex. I admit, a couple of times when the two guys got together in the sack I totally got chills. In a good way, I assure you.
So, this is a good read, not too long, with friends and families, sex and action, love and danger in equal proportions. The pacing is a steady climb toward climax, and the plot points are exciting enough to get the reader emotionally involved. I can easily recommend this.
However, this lost one star for me because the ending was just… unfinished. Instead of getting a view to the wonderful culmination of Seth and Jared’s relationship, we get an odd albeit not unforeseen confession that has no place here. It was just wrong placing for the scene, and because of it the story ends without the scene we’d been led to believe we would get. I was way disappointed.
But you read this story and judge for yourself. This is the first I’ve read from this author, and I wouldn’t mind reading more.
