Love this book. If you're looking for a fascinating, intense, and full of contradictions romance, that is somehow blended so brilliantly with political and philosophical issues, then this book is for you. This is my jam so I'm giving it a 4.8 (minus 0.2 because of a very minor detail at the end of the book that's more of an issue of personal taste).

Lemme say this, this is perhaps the BL with the best depiction of politics and how it works that I've read so far. The author clearly had some above average understanding of the history of pre-1945 as well as of occupation Japan, and modeled some major events of the book after real events. She did it intentionally, raising super interesting philosophical questions about government, cultures, the public sphere, and so on. And through which she expressed her nuanced understanding, which I strongly agree with, of the nature of politics and its processes, and not without inserting some sharp critiques of those historical events she took inspiration from. Is there an absolute form of government out there, that works perfectly in every epoch? What is politics but a process of constantly observing realities, considering what's best for one particular situation, considering the pros and cons and then adjust policies and forms of government so as to achieve the best result? But what is the "best result" anyway? The author carefully wove these questions into the story, and while the political undertone is pretty darn strong, she not at all let it overshadow the romance part of the book. Not that I mind even that did happen though, but how she managed to find a balance between the two elements is definitely something worth praising here.
My personal favorite though is her criticism of pacifism built upon a process of bulldozing regional cultures for the sake of creating a unified single god cult-based culture (well if this doesn't sound so damn familiar 😏).

Now let's talk about the romance part. Boy was it intense. I love the dynamics between the two MC, the fact that they were so resisting to the idea of being attracted to the other, and yet they couldn't help but fall in love as they started to understand the other more; the fact that the relationship developed slowly yet full of intense emotions and very well-written, sensual sexual tension; the fact that the MCs started out with hate and ended with a love so deep it went beyond one's self-interests and personal hapiness; and the fact that these characters were not without flaws, yet charming in their own ways, and despite some twisted parts in terms of characters and wrong choices, deep inside readers could tell that they were good-natured people. I like twisted but kind characters so this is hella important for me 😌

The top tho, I feel like I really need to mention how exceptionally interesting a character he was. Really, he was like a complicated and intelligent mix of MacArthur and 1930s extremist fascistic soldier of the Kwantung Army. And the way his outer-appearance was portrayed has a symbolic meaning regarding politics, so be sure to pay attention to that. This dude might be borderline overbearing at first, but his thoughts and personality when accompanied with the bottom's somehow shone really well. These two were a perfect pair from the very beginning in many ways. Really, if they weren't the way they were, the political messages wouldn't have been delivered so well either. Just show how love and politics were so intertwined in this book.

Oh yeah and the sex scene, especially the last one was so lovely. Imagine whenever your beloved reaches his climax, his body starts floating in the air, and you have to keep your hands on his hips always and pull him down. That's just so creative and sexy and adorable.

Love this book, I'll be sure to check out the rest of the series

MC1 is one of the sky people from the sky island who can fly by nature with an average lifespan 10 times as long as regular human. He was tricked and got trapped into playing the role of god 100 years ago. MC2 became the new ruler of the country and is plotting to overthrow the god system which was brought up 100 years ago to bring an end to constant wars among 3 large nations because the “gods” promote egalitarianism and denounce selfishness. But the god system has also weakened the country. In order to end the god system effectively, MC2 would need to kill MC1 to show that he is not a god because he can die.

This book caught my attention mostly because of the illustrator being Ranmaru Zaria, one of my favorite mangaka. Even though the cover art and synopsis make it look like an erotica featuring tentacles, it’s not an erotica but it does feature tentacles. I like how the story plays out the tug of war between selfishness and egalitarianism like how MC2 has to choose between love and his country. I am kind of conflicted about the ending. On one hand, I wish that MC2 is not the reincarnation of the ruler from 100 years ago who tricked MC1. But I also like how reincarnation is used to deal with the drastically different lifespans.
