Can Sephy Sinclair Return From Beyond The Grave? And If She Does― Will She Ever Be The Same?
SYNOPSIS
It’s been six months since Xion and Haedes began their search for The Book of The Dead, and with a warning from higher powers, they know they can’t be far from their goal.
Meanwhile, Luce and Thane are left scrambling, putting their relationship under strain as Luce succumbs to the dark magic she finds so alluring.
Then there’s Pandora, who’s been quiet ever since that night at the Colosseum, but why? Demon numbers are decreasing, yet animalistic murders in downtown Chicago indicate a shift in the way The Demon Lords are operating.
Can Sephy be brought back? And if she can, will she return as the Sephy Sinclair we all know and love, or will something else entirely return from beyond the grave?
Spicy, slow burn, Greek Mythology inspired Fantasy Romance, perfect for lovers of Adult Fantasy Romance with immersive worldbuilding such as The Mercy Thompson Series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and The Dark Hunters series by Sherilynn Kenyon.
Hi, I’m Kristy Nicolle, a 27-year-old British writer achieving freedom from the pain of my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome diagnosis by bringing fantasy worlds to life for my readers. I currently enjoy spending time in my fuzzy PJs with my kitty arch nemesis, Moo, and love all things mermaids, unicorns, and glitter! My books centre around high detail, high action fantasy worlds, full of badass female characters who love to get steamy.
It takes an egregious amount of effort to let our walls down, and show our vulnerability to another human being. The minute we experience something tragic, or hard, those walls immediately go back up and we tend to shut humanity out. Death is about as tragic as Sephy Sinclair can get.
We are six months after the shocking and brutal death of Persephone Sinclair from "The Opal Blade". Everything is in absolute disarray: Luce and Thane are left in temporary charge of Mortaria. Xion is devastated with another love lost. Hades just met and lost his daughter. Yet the two polar opposites are united in finding the book of the dead to resurrect the one thing they have in common: an unrequited love for Sephy.
Running Mortaria is easier said than done, and Luce is feeling the pressure. Thane is busy patrolling the Ashen Wasteland, making sure the demons are under control; although since the last battle, it's been relentlessly quiet. Luce is having trouble managing it all, which is making her rely more on alchemy. But tapping into her darker nature is causing some concern. The Fates come to pay a visit and voice their concern regarding the frequency of magical use, and how it can lead Luce down her darker path (clearly magic is the gateway drug). Thane, who claims she loves all of Luce, is less than accepting of the magic, and does not hide her disgust when she finds Luce using her power.
Desperately seeking a resolution to death, Xion and Hades go on a little road trip around the world, visiting any location that had a hint to holding the book of the dead. At the last destination, it's through Xion's adorable clumsiness that causes him to fall through the floor and into a hidden chamber containing the book of the dead. To their dismay, it burns those who do not hold a powerful link to the book. Seeing as Luce is the daughter of the former owner. . .you guessed it! Our very own Luce who is being admonished for such deplorable acts by some, is now being sought after by the ruler of the Underworld to retrieve and decipher the texts to resurrect his daughter.
Don't worry. The villains, and just plain hate-able characters are still around too (::cough cough:: ANUBIS). Pandora is still out for her revenge. It seems the Demon Lords are showing her more respect in this book than the previous. They seem more open to discussing tactics to overthrow Mortaria. Lilliana and Katerina are working in tandem with Pandora to bring mortal recruits in; a play that pays off for Pandora as these mortals in search for immortality worship her as the Queen she knows she is. Anubis is still looking out for only herself. Ever the busybody, Anubis is still sticking her nose in everyone's business- with particular attention to Luce and Thane's relationship.
And of course we have our main character; Sephy Sinclair. Sephy has been dead for six months, caught in the Nether. The way I like to think of the Nether is a deprivation tank. Unbeknownst to her, she has a team trying to bring her back to life. What was thought at a failed attempt to raise the dead, actually took three days to take effect. Sephy wakes up buried six feet under, with no idea what's going on. I mean how would you feel waking up after being dead six months, not breathing, sweating, moving etc. I don't know about you, but I can barely make it up out of bed, searching for the light switch while my mouth and throat dry up making me feel as if I've inhaled and swallowed lava.
The character development in this book, was beyond amazing. If you've read the first book, you've already acquired the bookish relationship with them all; love 'em or hate 'em. We see a lot of inner turmoil- something I can particularly relate with in this moment of my life- but I do believe that about 90% of people can walk away with something they can relate to. Luce and Thane's relationship is on the rocks. Luce completely takes to heart that Thane loves her 110% meaning the good and the bad. In Thane's mind, love should be enough to not warrant turning to the "dark side" using alchemy and channeling Luce's inner demon. I don't know about you, but if I'm told NOT to do something, I become rather obstinate. I make it a point to prove the statement wrong. I believe that is EXACTLY what Luce is attempting to do throughout the book. We see her as this good, kind hearted, porcelain, well kept devil, and she wants to show not only Thane, but the Fates, and Muerta that dabbling in alchemy FOR THE GOOD will not change her- will not make her "go dark" so to speak. We all want to be accepted at our base core. We want our partner, spouse, significant other, to handle the good and the bad. There were times throughout the book where it felt like Thane just didn't want to deal with the bad at all- understandable to a point when you're in a relationship with the devil, but still. On the other hand- you have the Fates semi predicting what Luce's path will look like if she does not heed the warnings. I know fate is a tricky thing, but when you have these ladies in your corner warning you about the ramifications of what you're doing, maybe should pay attention? I feel as though Luce disregards Thane's requests like an petulant child at times. Maybe it's because Thane is constantly away patrolling the borders, lack of communication etc.
Then we have Xion. I fell in love with Xion in the first book. His loss was just a devastating blow. So when he goes to get the love of his life resurrected, how can you NOT love him? Apparently resurrection does not look good with Xion. His hopes and dreams of everything returning to normal are quickly dashed. No fault of his own. But when the love of your life doesn't want to see you, you can't help but internalize your feelings. We have a lot of inner monologue going on. Why would (what he presumed) the love of his life not be interested in seeing him. Is she not thankful for coming back to life? Can't they just pick up where they left off? Is she a zombie? Are they broken up? Why can't he stop thinking about her? Reasonable questions to ask if you're unsure in your relationship. I know asking if my spouse is a zombie is part of my everyday logical thinking. . .(he works 3rd shift guys- laugh a little would ya?)
By far my absolute favorite character development is Sephy. She let her walls down at (what I'm assuming) one of her most intimate moments in life. She opened her heart to trust, possible love. And in that moment of letting her defense down, she was brutally murdered. She didn't ask to be murdered. She didn't ask for another shot at life. She was blissfully unaware in the Nether. So imagine her surprise waking up in a coffin. Anyone in their right mind would panic. Anyone would fight their way right out of that coffin. Sephy wakes up on the grounds of the Sinclair Estate- at least she's home.
"It feels like drowning, being smothered by the world, and I can't breathe for the dirt lodging itself in my throat and in my nose. I reach up, desperate, cold, shuddering as my ever muscle and sinew tenses, fighting for life in a way I never have. . ."
She crawls her way back to the front door. It's bad enough she tried to fight for life while being stabbed to death, but coming back from the grave and crawling to your front door. . . Thank goodness for Jules. I've had a soft spot for Jules since the previous book as well, but this is another side of him. He doesn't ask any questions (although in his mind I'm sure he is) he just scoops up Sephy and takes her into her shower. This is the first "glimpse" we get of her scars. Not only are we dealing with the multiple stab wounds across her stomach that went all the way through, but the lovely autopsy "Y" incision at the chest. This particular scene got to me. No words can put what emotion Nicolle dragged up from the darkest pit of my soul:
"I'm laid bare before him as he begins to work, using one leg to keep me pinned to him as I scream out, finding energy I didn't know I had left inside me as I am made to withstand yet more agony.
He pulls out the staples, one by one, letting them tinkle onto the shower tiles as my blood runs scarlet down the drain.
I whimper, and he cries, tears falling down his weathered cheeks and eyes so full of guilt it makes me want to cry harder. I'm shaking physically by the time he gets to the staples in my abdomen and scream bloody murder with each torturous click of the metal device he's using to remove them, tearing open my skin.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Nearly done. I promise," he's sobbing as he uses his wet sleeve to wipe his tearstained cheek, an entirely redundant act."
UGH! But that's not all. She makes it through a grueling shower, but even a shower isn't even to wash away trauma.
"Who am I? This is the question which resonates throughout each moment, each act, of the next few days. I spend a lot of time sleeping, too exhausted to deal with the realities of being alive, not wanting to listen to the punishing sound of my own breathing, my own heartbeat."
I'm sure anyone who has gone through any kind of trauma has felt like this. Not to be morose, but this is exactly what I felt after having my double mastectomy. Each breath was too much of an effort. So naturally, you do just want to tuck yourself nice and snug in a cocoon, away from the world, and just merely exist. But that is what Sephy WAS doing! She was existing just fine! And it took two selfish men to re-decide her fate, and make her cope with everything that was done to her.
Once trauma has effected our lives, we take every precautionary step to not let it happen again. For instance, I had a double mastectomy at a young age in hopes that cancer will not return; I understand there is still a possibility it may, but I have taken drastic steps to assure myself. Sephy understands this completely:
"I let my guard down. . .I hoped. . and I was killed for it. There's no place in my life for anything that makes me that vulnerable, Xion. Not ever. I can't go through that again."
I can't even imagine love being a trauma. The thoughts that go through your head. Emotionally shutting down. How frustrating for the person on the receiving end as well! Unfortunately scars like this aren't just physically visible, but permanently engraved into our brains as well. I feel as though we are hardwired to look for the traumatic in the minutest of detail. It doesn't even matter if it's a good moment, somehow, some way it's going to hurt us.
One other quote that got to me, and then I swear I'll turn it over to something positive and end this review.
"Sephy. . .you're the strongest person I know."
Being constantly told you're strong, when you know you're not. Being killed doesn't take strength, not even resurrection, when it's something you're forced to do. Sephy didn't choose any of it. If she would've been faced with the choice, then yeah, maybe she's strong. When your choice is taken out of the equation, it's just called surviving. Maybe in Sephy's case dealing with it.
Okay- one of my absolute favorite, laugh out loud scenes. Why? Because it's too relateable I don't care who you are.
"Holy hell, what is that smell?" I demand, finding Xion, who stops abruptly right in front of me with a napkin clutched tightly in his palm.
"Meatball sub. . ." he mumbles, licking marinara sauce off his bottom lip. I pout, noticing a seemingly bottomless chasm opening up where my stomach usually resides. It gives an audible rumble.
"Can I have a. . ." I ask, but he frown, a look of completely over the top affront twisting his usually stoic features.
"Absolutely not," he replies, cutting me off.
"Well, geez. It's not like I was asking for a freaking kidney. You brought me back from the dead without my permission. The lease you can do is give me a bite of your stupid sandwich," I complain, crossing my arms over my breasts and pouting. The scent of thick tomato pulp and fragrant spices taunts me.
" I don't share food. And besides, I asked you if you wanted something. . ." he defends himself while Hades coughs beside me.
"She's a woman Xion. She can't actually ask for what she wants, so she has to hope you'll guess. And then when you don't, she'll steal yours. It's the way of the world. Now hand over the sandwich so we can get going. . ."
We are soon halfway through the year (already!), and "The Onyx Hourglass" has been my favorite read so far. You've got your epitome of a middle book right here: A continuation of the story, MAJOR character development, MAJOR plot development, and a whole ton of emotions that are absolutely reader related. Nicolle has outdone herself, drawing the reader in to a trauma and making them heal to the end. If you don't come out of this book feeling something (even hatred) then she didn't do her job correctly.
This reader is looking forward to the final book, out sometime in December!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The Onyx Hourglass is the second novel in Sephy’s trilogy, and while I enjoyed it very much, it didn’t hold me quite as captive as the Opal Blade. There was a lot of wishy-washiness with Sephy, after her resurrection that kind of dragged on, but I expect that will improve in the final book of the trilogy. I also am not a big fan of Pandora’s chapters- the descriptions of her domain are just gross- spiders and phobias and blood and guts everywhere. She’s the least interesting character in the trilogy- thankfully, this book is full of Sephy, Xion, Haedes (my personal favorite,) Luce, and Thane. And Jules gets even more personality, which I loved.
I’m glad to be finished with this novel, which, as per usual with most second novels in a trilogy, I feel was a lot of set up for the third book. I think it was a necessary book, but it felt like a bit of a slog at times at close to 500 pages.
The writing was very well done, I enjoy Kristy’s style, it reminds me a lot of the OG urban fantasy writers like Karen Marie Moning or even JR Ward (before she expanded BDB too far.) I giggled out loud more than once at Haedes’ antics or Sephy’s sass.
I’m going to do a quick palette cleanse and read a psychological thriller as I’ve read a ton of fantasy thus far this year, and then I look forward to jumping back into the final book in this trilogy.
4 stars because I’d definitely recommend this book, even though I probably wouldn’t re-read it.
Great plot, good character building, interesting twists and turns. Loved the new twist to the usual Hades stories.
Only issue I had was the main character's flip floppiness with her emotions and what she thinks she ought to do about Xion. Personally, I think he deserves way better.
I don't normally write reviews for a middle book in a trilogy but in this case I felt I should. Kristy Nicolle is a master word smith! I am not going to go into detail about the story in case you haven't read the first one, which I highly suggest you do. What I will say is that the underworld that she has created is unique and, weirdly, a place I wish I could visit. I would sit and have a cup of tea with the Fates or take a visit to Luce's lab. They are so well crafted they feel like real places to me. Her characters are also wonderful. Sometimes in a story secondary characters seem flat and lifeless just there to fill some space. Not in Kristy's world! Each character seems to be alive and real. Each has their own feeling and voice; no two characters are the same.
I could gush on and on about how much I liked this story but I would rather you go get a copy for yourself and enjoy it first hand. At the time I am writing this review it is available for purchase or through the KU programme. Simply put this is fantasy at its finest. I can't wait for the final installment! Enjoy.
Hades and Xion travel the world in an attempt to find the book of the dead to resurrect Sephy. Luce agrees to help them attempt a resurrection, though Thane and others warn them that what they are attempting is dangerous. Pandora and Anubis hatch up a plan to use Luce to resurrect Ra, and Luce is drawn deeper and deeper into the darkness.
I always enjoy reading Kristy Nicolle's books, and this one was wonderful just like the rest. This world is easy to get sucked into. One of the things I like about these books is the way the POV is done. Sephy is the "main character," but Luce, Xion, and Pandora might as well be considered main characters as well. I am not a huge fan Sephy even still, but I often find myself thinking about things she has done and said, and I realize that the "imperfect/disliked" character is often the one you learn the most from. I like relating to the main character, but it's a nice change of pace to not relate to her. One of the things that upsets me the most about her is how she is handling her relationship with Xion--it seems very unfair to him. I can see, though, the conflict that Sephy has about it. I am hoping that they can get their happily ever after (though from what Hades has said, that seems unlikely.)
I'm definitely heavily invested in the story now and will be snapping up the last of this trilogy as soon as it is available.
Kristy Nicolle has outdone herself in this second book of The Ashen Touch Trilogy. The Onyx Hourglass IS SURELY her best work to date, with the immense amount of character development, the ungodly insane infrastructure of her fictional world falling into precise placement at the right moment that leaves the reader with their jaw dropped.
Reading The Onyx Hourglass is like staring at this huge 200 thousand piece puzzle and watching as it slowly knits itself together and becomes this amazing, astonishingly beautiful piece of art.
I fell stupidly in love with Xion in book one, and he surely doesn't dissappoint in book 2. His quick wit, and smartass attitude resonate within the reader and you will find yourself chuckling along at some of the mistakes he makes, and your heart squeezing as he tries to right those wrongs. His ability to adapt to many situations makes him a relate-able character.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVEDDDDD reading more about Luce and Thane, their story being one that the readers are going to be begging for more of I'm sure, I know I am! Their story is intricately woven throughout not only history, but their future is spun so tightly into The Onyx Hourglass I often found myself holding my breath when it came to a chapter from Luce's point of view. Fantastic job by the author of melding the side story and main plot into a cohesive story.
The Onyx Hourglass is full of twists and turns that will keep the reader engrossed from beginning to end. Haedes shows up and gives his amazing flare and sarcastic commentary, I swear I can't wait to read his story. I can't wait for more and more of this series, because it is so well written. Kristy Nicolle does such a fantastic job at showing you, not telling you, and for that reason it feels like I'm watching a movie in my mine as my eyes absorb the words from this story. 10/10 will recommend this series to a friend.
This novel was a beast! SOOO much happens though that you don't remotely want to look away from the pages.
Resurrection becomes the overarching theme of this book, starting with Haedes and Xion looking for The Book of The Dead to try to raise Sephy back to life. Haedes is so vain throughout the journey that it's comical, and his obsession with listening to Cher is gold! Thank you to the author for painting that pretty picture in my mind. 🤣
I'm glad we get to see more of Luce's character developed in this part of the story. She was one of my favourites in The Opal Blade with such a complex background. Helping to bring Sephy back was selfless, but that choice has damaged her relationship with Thane. They have become seriously strained, and I was hooked to find out if the relationship was going to be mended or how much "trouble" Luce is in using her darker abilities... needless to say, we get to see all of Luce's flaws and difficulties on full display and even some origin history of how she and Thane came to be together.
The new Sephy is an interesting piece of work in this part of the story...I can't tell if I like or dislike her character now as she flip flops in her ways of being as she navigates her life again (which is totally fair after becoming vulnerable and then to be killed in your most open moment). My heart broke seeing how much she's disregarding Xion now, who is still smitten with her.
Pandora, on the other hand...ick. I'm not her biggest fan! But, her character is critical to the storyline, and I see where she contributes to the drama causing this whole godly mess.
If you are someone who skips epilogues, just don't. You need to see where Kristy is about to take this story in Book 6 (or Book 3 of this trilogy).
Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity! An epic fantasy of gargantuan proportions!
Wow..where to begin here? Mind you this will be a spoiler free review at first until a week or so after the release!
This book had a different feel to it than the first. Usually when that is said, it can be bad and scary for a reader but in this case...it turned into something amazing. Onyx Hourglass is told in a way that is gritty, raw and in your face. In this novel, everyone is facing the one thing they all seem to be afraid of and that is their humanity. From Haedes to Thane to Luce, our favourite characters aren't just in a struggle with dealing with Sephy's death but are also in a battle within themselves. While the book is laced with humour that will make you laugh out loud (road trips and Cher), it also has moments of "punch in the gut" realness that will make you take a moment to just sit and think. This book made my heart hurt at times I will admit that. Don't let that deter you because that is what a book should do. This book MAKES you feel. These aren't just one dimensional characters here. You come to see them for who they are and the decisions they make in this book.
All in all, this book isn't just about dealing with death but how hard it is to be ALIVE. How it is something that can hurt and that can be rough and not always sweet. Being alive is confusing as all get out at times and Kristy was able to capture this in her writing. Its more in your face this time around and honestly, it was an amazing kick in the gut read with everything that happened.
This story just keeps getting better as we go along and the vivid detail and exciting and frightening action from one moment to the next is as unpredictable as it is enthralling. When we left Sephy at the end of The Opal Blade, she wasn't in a good place. Or was she?
In this installment of the trilogy, we see how far Haedes will go to protect his daughter, how deep Xion's love is for this woman he's sworn to protect his entire life, and the lengths Lucifer will reach to prove she is more than a pretty face who was cast from the aetherial realm. These characters are each strong in their own right, and as the tale moves forward, we find what drives them in the course set ahead of them. This is a fight not only to save those most important to them but to keep Mortaria from being taken over by the demon legion who has been waiting for just the perfect moment and to keep a balance necessary to save all of the realms.
Her characters are extreme and evocative and take us unexpected surprising directions. I'm always astonished by what the author will risk to not only keep our attention but to take us someplace we never knew we wanted to go. We become invested in the lives of her characters. We laugh out loud when she has them do or say something that hits us just right. And we cry when she fearlessly takes a character out of the equation who we never thought could be touched. I have no idea where this story is going next, but I can guarantee it's going to be somewhere I never would have predicted, and I'm in it for the long haul.

—— This is the second book in the trilogy but book five overall in the Queens of Fantasy Saga. Thank you for letting me arc read this beautiful well written book! I really appreciate it! If you are a huge fan of Gods, Goddesses, etc this book is for you! I definitely give this book a five out five stars! I loved it!
We start this book 6 months after the previous one ends, and man did I want to see some of the in-betweens. We're immediately met with Haedes and Xion's adventure whilst heading for the book, with the reality of Luce and Thane having to handle the underworld without it's king (which is more stressful than you'd think, apparently).
Pandora and the other Demon Lords, on the other hand, haven't been taking their previous loss sitting down. Not only have they been biding their time, they've been scheming, planning, recruiting. For what? Well, read it.
The stakes are as higher as ever, the emotions on a rollercoaster, and what do they all have to lose? Way more than they should.
I had to lower to 4 stars, simply because of a few characters' dialogue or decisions. It didn't sit well with me, personally. But, unfortunately, a part of me still understands the reasoning as to why.
That said, I highly appreciate the reality of events that Kristy puts together when you mess around, turns out, you really do find out. And not everything is all cupcakes and rainbows. Just because you want it, doesn't mean it will.
Its difficult to review this book as I don't want to give away any spoilers.
This book picks up from where book one ends. Hades and Xion are trying to find the book of the dead in the hope of resurrecting a force of nature. But while Hades is away Luce and Thane are left with the pressure of running Mortaria and the threat of another attack from Pandora and the Demon Lords.
The story is once again told from the main characters points of view, each character is unique in their feelings and emotions, each character is well developed and easy to visualise in my head (Hello Hades and Xion!!!). There was many moments in the story where I snickered to myself at something that had been said, other times I was annoyed at the way the characters treated each other. I also had an Oh My God moment where I was gutted over what had happened. You will go through a range of emotions!
The author weaves such an amazing story that dips into mythology and puts her own unique spin to it. Her Infinverse is expanding, for fans of the first series (Tidal Kiss) you will love the subtle mentions and links to the underwater world. The attention to detail in the description of a place, a character and even down to the song titles for chapters is perfect. Because of the detail included in the story this is not a quick read, it will suck you in.
Book three needs to come quickly, I need to know what happens next!
This is booked two, in SEPHYS journey. Where we have and met XION, Hades, Lucifer, and Thane too, and Jules. Loved Hades antics and Sephys sass! Definitely kept me wanting more, to keep reading this world. Had me on the edge of my seat giggling too. I don’t want to give too much details but I’m entranced, by Kristy’s writing, drawn into this unique underworld. So well crafted. Seeing the characters come to life with their own feelings and personalities. Six months after sephys passing. I just can’t… how can we not love Xion, after losing another love, he takes off to try and resurrect her. Hades finds out he has a long lost daughter both look for the book to resurrect her. Both devastated to lose her. They go on a road trip and go anywhere they heard who has held the book, and by shear luck they find it! As I said I don’t want to give too much away but u don’t want to miss out on this journey! Ate this up! I’m loving this series
“The Onyx Hourglass” is the second book in author Kristy Nicolle’s dark fantasy romance trilogy, The Ashen Touch, and it’s the continuation of our favorite demi-goddess Sephy Sinclair’s story.
So much happens in this book that I was ready to throw my kindle at the wall by the time I finished reading. What I love about Kristy Nicolle’s writing style is that she completely draws you in and holds your attention from beginning to end.
I thought the angst in this book was really well-done, particularly the angst between Luce and Thane. There was so many twists that I wasn’t expecting, and all I can say is that I am completely, 100% obsessed with this world and these characters. This was absolutely a 5 star read for me!
I sit here completely shredded, mouth hanging open, emotions raw, trying to think of what to say. I know a book hangover is imminent. I laughed so hard that tea came out of my nose, a cried becoming a giant blubbering mess. I cheered and subsequently yelled and railed at the characters as the story progressed. Each character grew immensely from the previous book as this story led them down a drastically different path. A necessary change of pace that still left me reeling. Why? How? When? That is the extent of what I can ask without giving anything away. For the love of Haedes I need the next book!
Wow. So much happened in this book. Pandora is still on her quest for vengeance. Xion and Haedes are on an extended road trip looking for The Book of the Dead in hopes to bring Sephy back. One treat I'll share that had me cracking up was Haedes playing Candy Crush. Xion got so mad that Haedes beat a level Xion had been stuck on for over a week. I've been there, Xion. The name of the game wasn't mentioned but there was talk about red jelly beans and crushing candy. For whatever reason I loved that bit of the book. I won't spoil anything. The tale continues to be epic. I definitely recommend reading the series!
Holy snap what a puzzle pieces that were fitting tighter through out this book. This book will take you on a amazing read that will have you drawn into this book from the first page tell the very end. This book is continually of the second book. This book will bring out the child in you wanting to jump right in and play with the writer and her story. This book series has blowing me away. This is a must read series book.. so cant wait for the third book. The writing style flows smoothly and has you feeling like you are right their.
My second ARC review for this author and I think the second instalment of the trilogy is as good if not better than the first! As well as the action, sass, and a little bit of spice the first book has, this story really allows the characters to develop emotionally allowing a real connection to be made with the characters. The plot is fast moving but never rushed, and once again I loved the new take on the Greek mythology, really modernising it and bringing the characters and stories into the modern world.
Haedes car deserves better. That's all I shall say on the matter. 🤣
Sephy goes through so much, as does Xaden. ALL the characters go through so many things. Anubis ..... never liked her.
This story has so many emotions that it felt like a Rollercoaster. After hitting a reading slump about 160 pages in that stopped me reading for a week or so *not the books fault* I binge read the rest in a day. This book was so good.
🌶️ Spice Level: 3/5 – Open-door scenes that enhance the story and character growth without overpowering the plot.
🥵 Smut Scale: 2/5 – More plot than spice, but when the heat hits, it adds depth to both the romance and characters.
🖤 Darkness Scale: 1.5/5 – While not overwhelmingly dark, the story touches on potential triggers both on and off the page.
⭐ Rating: 4/5 – Greek gods, resurrection chaos, emotional trauma, and identity crises—plus just the right amount of spice and enough emotional distress to leave you questioning everything.

What happens when Greek mythology, resurrection drama, and emotional damage walk into a bar? You get The Onyx Hourglass by Kristy Nicolle, book two in The Ashen Touch Trilogy. And yes, I’ll be reviewing all three!
Things are getting - intense - because, let’s be real, that’s exactly what you expect from book two in a trilogy. If you haven’t read The Opal Blade, stop here. Seriously. You’ve been warned—the rest is on you if you continue.
Six months after Sephy Sinclair bites the dust, Hades and Xion are out here playing fetch with the Book of the Dead, trying to pull off the ultimate “welcome back from the grave” party. Spoiler alert: it’s not that simple. Anyone else picturing that scene from Aladdin? Yeah, same. But Sephy’s return isn’t all sunshine and rainbows—turns out, dying kind of messes with your whole vibe. Now she has to figure out who she even is anymore. Cue existential crisis.
Just like in The Opal Blade, we get plenty of mythology with gender-bending and flipped traditional roles. And honestly? I love this. Why stick to the same old stories when you can shake things up? It adds an extra layer of intrigue, making the world feel even more dynamic and unpredictable, while also giving each character more depth.
Speaking of depth—this character development? It’s layered. Like peeling an onion, except instead of crying from fumes, you’re crying because your emotions weren’t ready for this. There’s humor, heartbreak, and some wild twists that’ll probably leave you staring into the void.
On to the final book in this story: The Obsidian Shard
As required to notate—I received a free ARC ebook, and now it’s my turn to spill the tea, one honest review at a time!
This is the second book in the Ashen Touch Trilogy. The first book really set up all of the action for this book! While it can be hard to keep all of the storylines straight sometimes, because there are a lot of characters, it is really fun getting to read the story from all perspectives!!! The whole book was just one huge adventure ending with a wonderful segue into what in sure will be an action packed third book!
I really enjoyed the multiple storylines. This one really kept me on my toes the whole way through, which is a testament. The overall journey of Sephy was another great notch in this series.
Absolutely devastated by some of the events in this one, I understand, but also, I am still upset!
I was lucky enough to receive an arc of this amazing novel and am leaving a review of my own thoughts and feelings.
I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This book put the pieces of my heart back together again, and then somehow blew it back to absolute smithereens. I adored seeing Xion and Jules from a different perspective this time, though I do feel for them both and wish they had a bit of better luck! I absolutely loved getting to spend more time with both Luce and Sephy - especially as I had no idea how Kristy was going to make a trilogy after the ending of Opal Blade. And then we unfortunately get to Haedes. Kristy - I’ll never forgive you. I have loved every single second of each book so far (apart from a certain scene in this one which I will not spoil for everyone) and adore Kristy’s writing style.
At 468 pages, this took me just over 7 and a half hours to read. Highly recommend to any fantasy and romance lover! Please note there are several darker scenes and those of an adult nature.
This is a fantastic second book! Once again the author weaves their magic and pulls us into this incredible world they have designed for us and these fantastic characters! The storyline grabs and holds on tight as we dive into the dark side of Greek mythology, it made me laugh and it made me cry like a baby but boy oh boy I could not stop reading this enthralling and captivating addition.
Second book in the trilogy was a little harder to get into but ended in big wow factors and cliff hangers. The story was a little less Sephy and a lot more of everyone else. I am honestly being roped back into this trilogy with that ending. Let the next batch of characters lead me to this next adventure.
Holy cow!!! Kristy has done it again. What another great book in The Ashen Touch Trilogy. I was sucked in and loved all the action it held. Especially while they were searching for The Book of the Dead
This was amazing, I hate Pandora chapters solely because I hate her guts. I love Sephy even if she was being whiny. Xion was living in a constant pity party and Haedes can't wait to know what befalls him also dammit Thane
I read this book as an ARC reader in preparation of the 10th book in the series coming soon.
I enjoyed this book but found it a little slow at times especially compared to Opal Blade. The middle to the end was good and captivating but the last chapter was a little anti-climactic for me.
wow a continuance of the story between Hades and his daughter. This is a great second book in the Ashen trilogy. I have been lucky enough to read as an advanced ebook. I can say that I am absolutely devouring this trilogy and would highly recommend. x
