This book starts off with a bang and never stops running until you've flown through the pages in an absolute whirlwind. The first book, Rebel Thirds, was a fascinating look at a dystopian society that seemed all too possible in this messed up world of ours. There was action, yes, but it was more of a character/society study than anything else. Scorned Seconds, however, flips that on its head. The action is non-stop in this one, but that does not mean that the social commentary goes out the window. Nor does the characterization. The fascinating thing about the world that Torassa has created is the fact that nobody is perfect. The Rebels who fight to be free? They might just be as bigoted as the people they are trying to overthrow. The main character, Jade? She's a lovable rogue, but not one who is without her weaknesses. Scorned Seconds is believable because, unlike a lot of other books, it represents people as they are, and not people as they should be. You will root for the good guys, yes, and you will root against the bad, but things are not always as they seem. Just like the real world, this book will keep you guessing until the very end. An end that comes all too soon. Can't wait for the third book!
