Claude Piron
40 books7 followersClaude Piron, a linguist and psychologist, was a translator for the United Nations (from Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish into French) from 1956 to 1961.
After leaving the UN, he worked the world over for the World Health Organization.
He was a prolific author of Esperanto works. He spoke Esperanto from childhood and used it in Japan, the People's Republic of China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, in Africa and Latin America, and in nearly all the countries of Europe.
In some of his books, he used the pseudonym "Johán Valano."

So, I read my first book in Esperanto written by UN Translator Claude Piron, was torn between writing a review in Esperanto or English, so I shall write in both! The story was designed to slowly introduce the reader into reading and thinking in Esperanto through a mystery story. In this respect, it was very well designed.
When reading in another language, one often forgets the quality of the writing and focuses only on the story, and though I personally am not a fan of mystery, I found the story entertaining and rather humorous. At first I started to question the writing, as I found many contradictions (dangerous in mysteries) but then at the end of the story book, Piron wrote a short note about whether the reader has realized the contradictions. If not, re-read again. I guess, I am reading this again!

Eble ne estas la plej forte literature, sed estas bone por instrui la lingvon; tial mi ĝojas ke estis mia unua esperantlingva libro :)

Mi legis mian unuan libron en esperanto! Kvin steloj por la facile-leganta teksto. Sed la rekonto estis nur mezo. Kelkfoje homoj diris stragajn aferojn, ke ne estis grava (sed estis tie por helpi la leginto lerni Esperanton). Mi estas felicxa, ke cxitie libro eksistas, sed gxi ne estas mia favorato.
I read my first book in Esperanto! Five stars for the easily-read text. But the story was only average. Sometimes people talked about strange things, that were not important (but were there to help the reader learn Esperanto). I'm happy that this book exists, but it's not my favorite.

May 15, 2016I read this story recently. At first, I was enjoying it, but being a mystery- and crime drama-fan, my enjoyment lessened as the story became more and more inconsistent. At the end, though, there was a note to the readers asking them if they noticed the contradiction. I certainly did! According to other readers, there are many contradictions in the story. Perhaps I should give this story another chance, knowing that the errors were intentional. All in all, very interesting.
Mi legis tiun ĉi rakonton lastatempe. Unue, mi ĝuis ĝin, sed estante fano de misteroj kaj krim-dramoj, mia ĝuo malplenis kiam la rakonto iĝis pli kaj pli senkohera. Sed, ĉe la fino de la verko, estis noto de la verkisto al la legintoj dirante, “Ĉu vi rikarkis la kontraŭdiron en tiu ĉi rakonto? Se ne, relegi ĝin.” Mi certe rikarkis ĝin! Laŭ aliaj legintoj, estas multaj kontraŭdiroj en la verko. Verŝajne, mi devus rekonsideri tiun ĉi verkon, sciante ke la eraroj estis celatingaj. Entute, tre interesa.

Kvankam mi eklernis Esperanton antaŭ pli ol tri jaroj, mi ne legis ĉi tiun libron ĝis nun. Fakte, mi memoras ke mi eklegis ĝin post kiam mi lernis iom da esperanto, sed mi ni finis ĝin.
Mi aŭdis plurajn opiniojn, ke la rakonto ne estas tre bona. Mi pensas ke la rakonto mem ne estas malbona, sed la ripetema stilo, ĉefe proksime al la komenco de la libro, estas iom teda. Sed entute la ideo, ke oni legu libron kies lingvonivelo pli kaj pli kreskas dum la rakonto, estas bona por lernantoj. Oni povas klare vidi, kial la libro famiĝis.

This story by Claude Piron, published by the Esperanto Association of Britain, provides useful reading practice for Esperanto learners. It comes with a CD, a book of lessons (with the option of sending exercises to a tutor from the EAB for marking), and a resource book, which includes a vocabulary, answers to the exercises and information about the world of Esperanto. As such this is an excellent set of resources to help aspiring Esperantists in their learning of the language.
My one criticism is that the story can often sound contrived (probably inevitably in view of its purpose) in excessively illustrating points of grammar and word-building at the expense of readability. The story itself is rather predictable and is clearly aimed at young adults, particularly university students, who can perhaps identify with the characters better than I found I could. I was particularly irritated by Tom's repeated idolisation of his girlfriend, Linda, as 'the most beautiful woman in the world', which felt sexist and patronising. This apart, I can highly recommend this book, which has helped me feel ready to read more mature and complex books written in Esperanto.

Tiu estis bona libro por praktiki la esperantan lingvon. Mi povus rememori ekde la fundamentaj scioj ĝis la pli mezaj. La rakonto estas tre simpla, sed perfekta por komencantoj! (Mi pensas, ke mia nivelo estas A2 nun, irante al B1 baldaŭ)
Pri la rakonto kiel literaturo, do, mi pensas, ke ĉi tiu ne estas la celo, sed mi ŝatis. La rakonto estis amuzebla kaj eĉ mi povis ridi pro kelkaj situacioj, hahaha.
En la fino, oni povas ricevi novan mision por revidi la tekston kaj serĉi kelkajn novajn aferojn.

Este foi um bom livro para praticar Esperanto. Pude relembrar desde os conhecimentos fundamentais até os mais intermediários. A história é muito simples, mas perfeita para iniciantes! (Acho que meu nível é A2 agora, indo para B1 em breve)
Sobre a história como literatura, então, acho que não é esse o objetivo, mas gostei. A história era engraçada e até eu dava risada de algumas situações, hahaha.
No final, você pode obter uma nova missão para revisitar o texto e procurar algumas coisas novas.

Mi ne finis la libron: mi restis por ĉapitro dek sep (70%). Tamen, mi pensas, ke ĝi estas bona metodo por lerni Esperanton: la malfacileco iom post iom pliiĝas kaj la leksikono komforte asimiliĝas. Pro la legitaj lecionoj, mi pensas, ke mi kapablas legi Esperanton je baza nivelo (skribi estas pli malfacila; fakte, mi verkas ĉi tiun recenzon en Esperanto helpe de tradukisto). Ĝi tamen havas kelkajn malavantaĝojn: la enhavo estas enuiga kaj, krome, ĝi faras multajn antaŭjuĝojn kaj stereotipojn pri virinoj, kiuj igas ĝin malaktuala.

Gxi estas bona por komencanto kiel mi lerni pli vortoj kun simpla rakonto. Gxi ne estas mirinda rakonto, sed gxi estas simple bona por instrui. Do, se vi estas komencanto, cxi-libro estas bona por vi.

Mi trovis cxi tion bona libro por reaktivigi kaj praktiki mian Esperanton. Mi ne volis pasigi tempon lernante Esperanton denove, sed mi ankaux ne volis perdi gxin tute, do mi sercxis facila libro, kiun mi povis legi.
Ĉi tiu estas la unua fojo, ke mi legis libron verkitan en Esperanto, anstataux unu tradukita al Esperanto.
Kiel lernolibro, gxi estis bona. La nivelo de malfacileco malrapide kreskas kun cxiu cxapitro, do gxi estas bona por komencantoj, aux spertaj lernantoj. La rakonto estis pli interesa ol la kutimaj rakontoj kiujn vi trovas en lernolibroj.
Kiel novelo, gxi estis tre baza. Mi trovis multajn decidojn kaj agojn de la roluloj strangaj, kaj nekredeblaj. Sed mi scias, ke gxi estis skribita tiamaniere por pli facile uzi la gxustan vortprovizon. Mi ankaux pensis, ke la fino estis tre subita, kaj tro multe da tempo elspezis por klarigi la historion cxe la fino anstataux fini gxin per la ago.
Kiel libro por lernado, mi certe rekomendas gxin.

It's perfect for the beginner. There are exercises in Esperanto that lends itself not just to practice but also to structured review. Consider using Anki with the associated deck before or during this read.

The classic. Intriguing story, useful for komencantoj as vocabulary becomes more complex as story progresses. Quite believable characterisation and interaction between the protagonists demonsting real-world application of Esperanto for daily life beyond Verdstelic navel-gazing 😺. Short discrete chapters for paced reading - but engaging enough to draw you in to finish the story, and find out WHY Gerda Disappeared.

Esperantaj komencantoj kiel mi bezonas librojn kiel tiun por pli facile lerni la lingvon. Mi plezure konstatis ke la ĉapitroj estis fariĝanta pli kaj pli klaraj al mi. La rakonto tamen estis bedaŭrinde tro seksisma kelkfoje.

It's so much fun for a textbook. You know the editor considerately organized the text to help you build vocabulary and grammatical knowledge step by step. And the story is quite good, at least for a text book.

For a didactic story, it was pretty good. At least it featured a mystery plot rather than the typical "Dick & Jane" variety.

A great book for learning the language. The story is a bit interesting.
