Natural Phenomena

Rate this book
"A city lies in ruins. Spires topple, planes fall. Rubble is broken by wildflower. Birdsong and chatter cut through."

Discover the urban wild in Meryl Pugh's debut collection. Join the poet as flaneuse wandering the city s hidden spaces to encounter its flora and fauna; its many-voiced song.

A book of witnessing and overhearing, Natural Phenomena asks where the beauty is in the city of plastic, wire and glass; holds a mirror up to the self and asks how we contend with loss and absence in a constantly bustling environment.

Breathtaking first collection by Meryl Pugh - essentially a book about city and the wild within the urban and with an overriding sense of loss running though it. Personal loss but also a wider loss of innocence and the natural world. This a collection that speaks of very modern concerns but has a timeless almost pastoral feel. A beautifully crafted collection that gives more at each reading.

Some great 'word soundscapes', for want of a better term. Really immersive. Some of the poems didn't do much for me. But overall a really good debut.
