“Because us? Psychopaths and sinners… we don’t need fixing, Gray.”
Three bodies, three mutilations, each one with something… unusual inserted into the wounds. The deaths are enough to leave Ash Thomas scrambling around to find someone to trust as the murders hit so close to home and heart. For Gray Raoul, MI5 director of G-Branch, the deaths offer something else, a fall back into a familiar life where culling serial killers cater to his own darker mindset. But the farther Gray moves away from home, the more he realises serial killer games in the field are nothing compared to who he has locked up back at home. Sometimes walking the fine line between psychopaths and live-in lovers is a far darker game. For Ash, that might just mean he’s on his own now, facing a killer who has a deadly fascination for pretty young men and dancing Holly Blue butterflies over their skin. (M/M)
Jack blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive.
Firstly, I need to say that for some reason, I couldn't get my head wrapped around book 4.5 - Ash. Let me blame my mood for it. Therefore, I was walking on eggshells when I decided to start book 5 regardless. Do I regret it?? I regret nothing.
Jack L. Pyke, your imagination has no bounds!
Countless times I caught myself going back and re-reading sentences open-mouthed. I am in awe of your talent. For those who can take it DARK,
Fifth novel in the Don't series, with Ash being the prequel to this novel. There is one more novel in the series to come: Fractured (Don't 6), and that's already with the publisher. For more details, please check out here:
I so want to talk about what goes on in this book, but you should experience it fresh so no spoilers. You do need to read Ash before this as it's really the start of this story which continues with the possible serial killer on the loose (as far as the timeline of the other books, it's about one month from the end of Backlash). When Gray is called in as a culler to observe on the case, it will bring him straight into the path of Raif and Ash and there is at least one person from Gray's past that doesn't want him there. The gameplay begins straight away. It's not an ideal time for Gray to leave with Jack in lock-up in the manor under constant psychiatric observation, but he leaves Jan to take care of things, but not before Martin has his moment with Gray. Jan is so much stronger than the "soft lad" who first appeared in Don't... I get the feeling that as Gray gets deeper into gameplay with Martin, Jan is the only one thinking clearly where Jack is concerned even while he's still struggling to stay clean and dealing with his own anger about being left to deal on his own after his abduction.
Ash and Raif's story alternates with the triad's. It took me quite a while to get comfortable with Raif continuing on from Ash. Again, I know he is a good person, but I was still uncomfortable with the way he treats Ash. Ash is lost in grief over Johnny's death, as is Chase and the two have been keeping distant. When they get back together though? They are up to old tricks again and Raif re-inserts himself into Ash's life once again. Although we learn more about both Ash and Raif, Raif still retains an aura of mystery about him for most of the story. Ash, on the other hand, I need more of. We've just scratched the surface of his character beneath the abused, hurting young man and I need to see him blossom. Before the Holly Blue killer storyline gets resolved (and it does get resolved here), things get much worse for Ash and his friend Chase. This storyline again shows how brutal Jack L Pyke can get with her characters, but if you've gone this far in the series, it isn't as bad as Antidote.
While the Holly Blue killer is the main focus of the plot, there is also the mystery that was started in Ash relating to the missing military equipment and the I-dosing death Raif was investigating (that storyline will continue in the next book). Here is where Jack L Pyke weaves all the characters together and creates a path that will either destroy them or save them. A bit of a bombshell near the end guarantees that whatever way it goes it will not be easy for anyone. But then again, this series has never been about easy.
There is plenty of fallout that is going to affect everyone in the next story as the surveillance of Light continues. Once again, there is plenty of family dysfunction here as well, be it fathers and sons, lovers, friends, whether it's family by blood or by choice, the sins of the past are all coming into the present for many of the characters.
Gray was especially tried in this book. You can feel him slowly losing himself throughout. He wants to be there and take care of Jan. He wants to have Jack back. But he is also enjoying his brutal games with Martin. Gray dealing with Martin is pushing enough buttons on its own but dealing with his past coming into his present and threatening what's his has him on a knife's edge. Gray does not take any threat to Jan or Jack lightly as we all know, but he is pushed a bit too far in this one. Gray is a formidable opponent in many ways, but we are given a taste of just how Gray the culler works here and it's cold and it's brutal. Gray is at a precipice, slowly losing his footing and he can catch himself or fall and the next book promises to really test him.
"This slow suicide of yours …" Martin tilted his head slightly. "It's fucking stunning Welsh. And It's coming. You're gonna fall, and you'll fall so badly."
While there was plenty of page time with Jan, Gray and Jack/Martin, I'm really missing Jack and I'm missing the triad being all together. There are the briefest glimpses of the Jack we all know and love, but whether he will ever fully be that same man again is questionable. The worst-case scenario is that Martin becomes the dominant personality and things remain as they've been since the end of Backlash. As much as I enjoy Martin I just miss Jack. I am so hoping that the next book finds us moving forward with the future of Jan, Jack and Gray because even though I know they love and are devoted to each other, I'm getting very anxious about them. In the series timeline it’s been just over a year that they have been together and what a bad year it has been!
Par for the course in this series, the story was heavy and disturbing. There weren't many moments of lightness. I was constantly on the edge of my seat with adrenaline pumping, wondering what the next page would bring. There was one revelation after another. One more complication thrown into an already explosive mix. There are more hands at work trying to pull Gray's strings than we know about yet and I am on tenterhooks already anticipating the culmination of what has been set in motion in this story.
** I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC provided by the Author **
Psychopaths & Sinners, the fifth book in Jack L. Pyke’s incredible Don’t… series, is here! One of my all time favorites, this is a must read for all fans of dark, erotic thrillers. If you haven’t taken this journey yet I envy you, because I wish I could experience it all again for the first time.
These characters! The depth Pyke goes into exploring their emotions, their motivations, their connection to each other and the internal struggles they have… well there’s no other author I know who goes this far inside her characters’ heads.
I love the new guys, Ash and Raif, and can’t wait to see where they’re going next. Pyke introduces them in Ash, Don’t… 4.5, along with some other great new players, and a freaky-scary mystery that’s amazing as well. There’s a wonderful dynamic between Ash and Raif and it’s extremely compelling. The future of this series is going to be amazing!
Raif is such an interesting character, and every little reveal of his past just makes me want to find out more about him. He keeps his guard up and first impressions show a cold, hardened man who’s had more than his share of hard knocks. As we get to know Raif, to see the lengths he goes to care for those in need and how badly he needs to be cared for in return, it just shows what a tender, sweet guy he is. Ash is bringing out all kinds of fascinating in Raif, I think the timing is right and he’s more than okay with this.
Ash is young, and recent events have caused him to take a long, hard look at his life. His irreverent approach to life, his cruel and thoughtless pranks, and promiscuous sex life have done damage in ways he’s only beginning to see. Ash is sinking fast and reclaiming his life, standing up for himself, and cutting the toxic relationships, is the only way he’s going to make it through. Watching him realize this and take the steps necessary to get there blew me away. This young man makes some amazing strides over just a very short period of time.
There are some changes going on in the House of Gray as well. Martin has almost completely taken over and Jack is buried deep, down where only occasional glimpses of him peek out. At least Martin wants us to think that Jack is still there... but as is her way, Jack L. Pyke is a master of the mind-fuck, so I’ll leave it up to you to decide for yourself. I can only imagine (and hope) where Martin chooses to go next.
While I definitely miss Jack, his absence allows for a dynamic between Gray and Jan that isn’t as prevalent in the earlier stories. To see this tender, attentive side of Gray, the Gray that Jan brings out, is priceless and definitely worth the trade-off. We also see Jan becoming more confident and, is ‘demanding’ the right word? He’s a true advocate for Jack and won’t tolerate anyone messing around, especially Gray. He wants his Jack back.
Watching Gray continue to fall apart in Psychopaths & Sinners is devastating. The strain of needing Jack, and wanting his men healthy and whole is taking its toll on Gray both mentally and physically. The dichotomy between the cold, hard, ruthless killer he shows the world versus the man who loves so deeply is intense. When Gray breaks down and shows his pain, you know he’s truly at the end of his rope.
Thank heavens Don’t… six is currently in the works, and I’ll leave this little plea to Jack L. Pyke: please hurry! As uncertain as things are at the end of Psychopaths & Sinners, there is one thing of which I’m certain: Gray is clearly heading towards some actions that are going to change everything. Choices he’s going to make that even Gray can’t make right and I can’t wait to be there when it happens.
This story has been a long time coming. Be prepared for it to continue in a slightly different direction. To start with, it follows the events that take place in Ash, which you really should read in order to keep up with everything that’s happened and which pertains to this story. Have no fear though, because Gray, Jan and Jack/Martin are still very much a part of this series. Further, if you haven’t yet read the initial Don’t books, you are really going to miss out on the makeup of these unbelievably complex characters and what they’ve been through and continue to deal with at this point.
It’s difficult to really discuss much of this story without giving too much away. There is so much going on with a serial killer, Gray and his culler activities, all while he continues to try to patch up the cracked pieces of his relationship with Jan and Jack/Martin (more Martin, as we still don’t quite have Jack back). It isn’t the best timing for Gray to be called away, but nothing ever seems to go very easy for Gray in any form.
We get to know a few other players in this segment, namely more of Ash and Raif, and we learn more about Chase and the butterfly killer. Of course, those threads are interesting and masterfully twisted as well. However, it is the original threesome that always has my heart, and as things are still so unsettled where they are concerned, I remained on the edge of my seat with them as well. It is hard to imagine there is still much left to learn about these guys, but even after all this time and all they have been through, there are so many details to soak up.
Throughout this story, I have felt my feelings change one way or another where certain characters are concerned, not knowing their true intentions, thinking we have learned them only to be thrown off once again. Gray and Jack/Martin have to be some of the most intricate and complex characters I’ve ever fallen in love with, and it is fascinating to see their interactions, both good and bad. They have such a history and various things they do make me sigh and think “that was such a Gray reaction” or how little sayings/nicknames hold such strong meanings and really just give me the warm and fuzzies about it all. And just because Jan has been nicknamed the “soft lad,” he is truly anything but. He proves that more than once and though he faces a few setbacks of his own, he has a lot of backbone underneath his sweet outer shell.
Needless to say, I’m a huge fan. From the very first words in this series, I was hooked like a highly addictive drug, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over or get enough of it. Jack’s ability to weave a detailed, crafty unbelievably interesting story every time puts her at the top of my all-time fave list. You have to like your stories a bit on the darker side – psychological thrillers with a side of MM, BDSM and so much more. But, if that is your cuppa, I can’t recommend this series and/or author enough. I won’t ever forget any of these characters and already can’t wait for the grand finale that’s on the horizon.
I’m not sure how to review this without giving spoilers so if you don’t want to have the book spoiled be warned….There might be spoilers ahead…...I’ve waited a long time for this one and oh boy is it worth the wait….Firstly I’d suggest reading Ash first...You’ll get an insight into who Ash and Raif are...their background….Who Chase is….You’ll thank me for that...Chase goes through hell in this book (think Antidote).....We have a so much of Gray in this and we have Jan...both complimenting each other and we have Martin…..No Jack as such….I miss Jack….As usual this is a dark read but I’d say not as dark as Antidote but not far off….Looking for the serial killer and wondering who it is..(yeah I guessed right this time)..it’s a shocker…...Ash and Raif are a big part of this and they make an amazing couple………….I love them both….Gray is his usual self….Protecting his own….We also get to meet Gray’s father and they are so much alike…...I love this series completely…..It has to be right up there at the top….The way Jack draws you into Gray,Jan and Jack’s world is amazing…….Everything flows so well and you can’t help but love Martin that little bit more in this….He certainly is kept apart from everyone but he has his own moments….Again I felt for Jan but oh boy has he grown...He knows how to stand upto Gray and let him know how he’s feeling…..This book is based around finding the Holly Blue killer over any sex life of the men but who needs sex scenes when you have Marting to contend with…...In all this is my favourite of the series and there’s only one thing that will top it...That’s to give me my Jack back...I’m pretty sure it will happen...It has to happen...Gray and Jan together are amazing...but throw Jack back in there and you have perfection…...You’ve outdone yourself on this one Ms Pyke x
Even though it raises more questions than it answers, even though Jack is still lost, even though my favourite trio are nowhere near back to where they should be and even though I have been left biting my fingernails (again!) for the next instalment Psychopaths & Sinners was everything I wanted and more than I expected and it was so, so good being back in the Don’t… universe.
I say this in every review for this series but it does need repeating – this series is dark and all that darkness is on page. This author doesn’t make it easy for her characters EVER and there is no HEA here but there is an absolutely absorbing storyline that moves everything forward and throws you back into the crazy world of Gray, Jan and Jack Martin from the start. This is the first full book in the series without Jack and I missed him a lot, as did Gray and Jan, but I am forever hopeful that at some point he will make it back to everyone he loves and Martin won’t have done too much permanent damage.
Reading Psychopaths & Sinners leaves you with an overwhelming sense that the worst is yet to come. Gray seems to be slipping between what he currently has and what he had and wants back – the lines are beginning to blur and for the first time in a while he doesn’t appear to be as controlled as he once was. It felt like the only thing keeping him grounded and in the here and now was Jan but there is damage there too which is made worse from outside interference that is a little too close to home for comfort.
Jan is beautifully strong and devastatingly delicate at the same time. The Ferryman’s interference has left him feeling vulnerable but when it comes to getting Jack back he seems to be the one that understands what is needed most and his strength comes in standing up to Gray to ensure that happens. Jan needs help but I think he needs Jack more and it will be interesting to see how strong he can remain and for how long when Jack is still so obviously lost.
Martin is completely in control and out of control at the same time. His games have no limits and his skills at manipulation know no end BUT every now and then just under the surface there is a glimmer of someone else. Someone who is scared, someone who needs his lovers and someone who is going to need to fight with everything he has to return. This is a real battle of wills that will ultimately decide the futures of three men who are all slightly unbalanced and who all need each other just to function and breathe.
There are so many other relevant characters here that all have their part in how this will eventually end. Jack L Pyke is a master storyteller that excels at giving you the story you wanted but leaving you with just as many questions as you began with. I see bleak times coming for all these men before anything changes – so many lies, secrets and personalities I’m sure the fallout is going to be huge but I also have everything crossed that will finally, finally get a bit of happiness back.
Another great instalment in this series. I just can’t get enough of it. I loved the characters very much. I love getting to know more of Gray, who has always been such an intriguing character. It was mostly slow pace but the story was interesting enough to keep me hook to it all the time.
The plot was fantastic. I love the way the main character’s stories connect. Even though I love the characters, that mostly is only when I talk about Gray, Jack and Jan. I liked Ash and Raif but I can’t say I loved them the way I loved the others. Ash was particularly interesting. I miss Jack terribly. I guess it just reflect the way Jan and Gray feel, but it was so bittersweet the few moments when I get to see him.
I alternate the reading and listening. I’m very impressed by the narrator abilities to create all this different characters. It was so easy to say who was who and they were so many that I was worry I would get confused. Perfectly paced. I loved the accents so much. Great narration. So perfect for the book. I keep thinking Gray is the one who has the prettiest voice.
If you think you’ve had a terrible week, I guarantee you it is nothing like the one presented in Jack L. Pyke’s fifth installment of her Don’t… series. In true Pyke fashion, she opens up Psychopaths & Sinners by kicking you in the gut, leaving you floundering and making you want to weep in more ways than one - for more souls than one.
Don’t… think you can enter into this series without having read them all, and in order, because the story line is precise, detailed, and planned out. Pyke has a beautiful way of blending past memories, individual habits, even specific moments in time, to present thoughts and events, while using them to propel a narrative forward.
There’s pain… lots of pain. Jack is hiding in Martin. Martin is determined to win. Gray is drowning in his own personal hell, trying not to succumb. And Jan? Jan is still grappling, struggling, mourning… needing! We see all his hurt manifested, bubbling up and spilling over.
“Jan offered a small smile back. He’d had enough of walking in the shadow of a psychopath,” Pyke conveys.
Jack L. Pyke doesn’t let your mind wander, constantly feeding you with imagery to satisfy your imaginations hunger - creating a mystery that forces your heart to beat faster and makes your ears crane at every tiny noise you hear, wondering if someone is lurking.
“Flutter by those fucking butterflies.”
With every objects placement, person’s stance, simple touch, purposeful stare - I’m drawn in - as if I’m experiencing every hurt and angst filled scene, as well as the all-consuming passionate moments, with each and every character.
As a visual reader, Pyke never fails to satisfy me. With every objects placement, person’s stance, simple touch, purposeful stare - I’m drawn in - as if I’m experiencing every hurt and angst filled scene, as well as the all-consuming passionate moments, with each and every character. Their bleeding hurt is emblazoned into my heart and I can feel their lust and desire in my groin.
Using new characters, and old ones alike, this storyteller pulls you in. If you’ve read Pyke’s books before, you know there is no chance meeting, no happenstance, everything and everyone who touches her character’s lives are there for a reason. She weaves a tale of deception, heartbreak, and yet at the same time, reflects the measures one will take to save the person, or persons, they love the most.
Psychopaths & Sinners takes off where Ash left off and the build-up is intense. Ash and Raif have full reign here and their true dynamic is on brilliant display. Russel Dickerson’s lyrics from “Yours” couldn’t describe them any better.
I was one in one-hundred billion A burned out star in a galaxy Just lost in the sky wondering why Everyone else shines out but me But I came to life when I first kissed you
This installment is the perfect backdrop of murder, mystery and intrigue as Pyke sashays between scenes of the aftermath of a crime and what’s unfolding with Jack, Jan, Gray… and Martin. All the while you’re wondering, frustratingly so, what connects the new players to these three men. Yes, three. She places seeds here and there, plants questions, only to make you wait out an explanation at just the precise moment. And like any good thrill-master, has you believing you know who it is, only to shoot you down until the next flashing moment. But alas, as in Antidote, the reveal is hidden until just the perfect moment and is not only shocking, but sad.
She weaves a tale of deception, heartbreak, and yet at the same time, reflects the measures one will take to save the person, or persons, they love the most.
Right up to the very end Psychopaths & Sinners has you feeling as if there will be no resolution, it creates a sense of foreboding and sets your adrenaline pumping watching a big house of cards tumble and stack itself back up. There’s hurt, betrayal, remorse, maybe even forgiveness? And perhaps the start of something new? Some help? As one door closes a new one opens: With a whole new set of questions, some new personalities, a hell of a lot of sinners and maybe one more psychopath.
Jack L. Pyke is setting her readers up for an explosive Don’t… series finale like only she can, and I’m misty eyed just thinking that these men will soon be leaving us behind! Dare I say she is one author who is destined for the New York Times and USA Today best sellers lists? That’s one time I’m not going to be shy about gloating and saying, “I told you so!”
Wow, I'm loss for words, this is one hot mess of a series that I just can't get enough of!!!!!! OMG, Jack L. Pyke has an amazing imagination and creativity and this series will take you to places you never imagined!! The narrator Dan Calley did a phenomenal job as well, I loved listening to this narrator plus reading the books as well!!!
I liked this book but I wished that the main three (Jan, Jack and Gray) had more page time in this book, I felt like this books focused more on Ash which I didn’t mind but also didn’t really care that much.
Hopefully in the next book the main three are more present and have more page time.
The prequel to this book introduced me to Ash and Raif. One is a young man lacking a firm direction while the other is a grizzled older cop who has way too many secrets. One is an open book, and one needs a cypher to uncover their secrets. When Ash’s friend Johnny died, Ash was devastated and didn’t believe it was suicide. But believing and proving are two different things. In this book, Raif takes point in trying to find the man who is killing people and leaving insects in the mortal wounds. Entomophilia – sex with insects. Okay, now I think I’ve heard everything. Apparently being feasted on by fire ants while orgasming is a thing. Well, no kink shaming. But when this monster kills someone close to Raif, it’s not just devastating, it’s horrific. So many lives affected by one single act of depravity.
Paralleled to the Raif/Ash storyline is the Gray/Jan/Jack/Martin plotline. Note, Martin is still playing a central role with Jack virtually consigned to oblivion. I’m beginning to despair of ever having him back. But hope lives strong because the series isn’t over. Anyway, Jan is still having a difficult time coming with the aftermath of the kidnapping and rape. He’s managed to kick the heroin habit but only with the help of methadone. One missed dose and he’s back to being dope sick. Maybe kicked the habit is too strong a sentiment. It’s being managed medically. I want him back to health, but until he deals with the really tough stuff, he’s not likely to get better. Then there’s Gray. Stalwart and stoic Gray. Always sticking his nose into other people’s business. He’s MI5 so he can get away with some of that. But it’s dangerous work and not without risks to his and those he loves.
This book is as disturbing as the others, to be sure. And it’s a highly addictive series. I’m invested in these men. I despaired when Ash’s father hurts him. I sat on the edge of my seat when the serial killer had Ash and Chase in his grasp. I ached to soothe the hurt wrought by a damaged and deranged man. I have to say there was a certain level of satisfaction with the resolution of that plotline, but there are plenty of loose threads that have yet to be sewn together and resolved. There is still another serial killer Gray is tracking. I’d almost forgotten about the liquefaction of organs by noise emitted through headphones. I would say it was too far fetched, but these days anything is possible.
While Ash and Raif have their happy ending with their new makeshift family, there’s plenty left to resolve with the Jack/Martin plotline. If I sound repetitive, I think I’m justified. Jack was the central character in Don’t, and I’ve watched him endure so much. I want to believe he will come out the other side of this trauma, but with Jack Pyke, I’m never quite sure of what I’m going to get. This book was another mind f-k – in a good way. I listen to these books expecting dark and twisted, and I’m never disappointed.
Again, the brilliant Dan Calley narrated this great book. He came into my world with these books, and I’ve heard him narrate several other books now and I’m even more of a fan. He hits every note perfectly, giving each man a distinct voice, carrying the tension through the story. I am always thrilled when I see he’ll be performing the narration on a book.
Okay, I’m poised for the next book. I know it’ll be a mind f-k and I can’t wait.
Oh wow! Awesome read which I have come to expect from Jack L Pyke…but I want Jack please….don't like Martin!!! Love Raif and Ash. Loved the storyline and the suspense. Felt so terrible for Ash…what he experienced as a child and as an adult...I can forgive all his behaviour....what a tough life. And Raif...OMW....something a father should not experience. Grey and Jan seem so lost without their other part. Love these guys.
Intriguing.....is what I would say about this book . Gray, Jan and Martin return in this installment and though the Ash buildup was kind of slow , The three lead pairs stole the show. I can see a showdown between Jan( love the way gray is with him) and Gray regarding Martin looming around the horizon and I cant wait. Please read the other books or you will not be able to follow, but it is worth it!
A totally intense, mind blowing read! This deals with so many different issues but NEVER does the storyline falter. I've loved every book in this series. Each one has been intense but this one.....WOW! It was great to see how the issues the characters had were dealt with by the author and the way they were dealt with showed the author had done their research.. Absolutely loved it!
I was generously given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review. So sorry Jack for the delayed review, I thought I had posted it when the book came out, but I didn't see it anywhere so I re-posted it.
This is not a standalone, to fully appreciate Gray, Jack/Martin and Jan, you have to start at the very beginning of this series. After reading #4.5, I was intrigued as to why Jack was introducing new characters at this point in the series, but of course after reading book #5, I have even more questions...and that is why I love Jack's writing style. I won't lie, years ago when I read Don't, I struggled with how the words were written, I felt confused and lost and sometimes I had to re-read a passage because I struggled to understand the story line, but by the end of the first book...I got it, it was clear to me what the book was about and everything fell into place and I totally appreciated her brand of storytelling ever since.
For me, this book has a different vibe, maybe because of the new characters Ash and Raif or maybe because Jack is not present. We get Martin, and by the end of the book, my biggest question was, is it possible somehow that Martin will never leave, will they have to make room for him...kind of like weird sort of a foursome maybe? I really missed Jack in this book, but it also allowed us to see the relationship dynamic between Gray and Jan and man, these two are struggling for their own reasons, it was heartbreaking and difficult to read. There are so many emotions, thoughts, questions, heartbreak and so intense, tender, frustrating and complex.
There's a lot going on...with everyone and book #6 cannot come soon enough. I truly adore Jack L Pyke Don't series, I love the psychothriller (um...not sure that's the correct term) aspect and how well she delves into her characters minds, it's been a very fascinating journey for sure!
Just finished this magnificent book .....dark so dark opened my eyes ....
Ash and Raif I love their togetherness it takes trust and Ash is learning... Meeting Grey and Jan ( a soft lad ) again was wonderful it’s seems ages since I last saw them . Jack I need Jack ~~ Martin is still there ....
I cannot get enough of these book they are becoming my family now ! Jack L Pyke writes with compassion- honestly- and so much darkness but you see and feel every word she writes.
Twists and turns all this will make book 6 a book I shall be watching and waiting for with grabby hands..
I'm so divided with this book. On one side I think it's perfectly written and this was the correct and wholesome way of continuing the story. But. There's always a but. Ash would know. Where do you go when the characters number too much. Where the characters you came here to read are lost and seen only from another's pov or that irritating feeling of other things and characters being more important than who you originally started the journey with. There is a disconnect. No matter how much i think it suits the story in a rational way, to have plots mingle and different narrations to get the feel. Emotionally I felt cheated. This was difficult to read without Jack. And Martin more than deserved his book but there were so many other things going on. And now that I need closure for my triad and get back... There's another character that the writer is so focused on. And these books are long. We've suffered with Jack, Jan and Gray. We know them so well and cried and just want them to be okay but the focus is taken away. And yes its a dark psychological read, but we kinda grew with the resident characters so what now? I don't want to have put in so much time with characters becoming so close to my heart only to have the focus taken off them because the author got excited to write a new guy. This is a very exhausting series. I love it. It's why I've stayed. I stayed for the three central characters that had me captivated. I want their story to be primary. Because it's those three guys that brought the thrill. And I feel as the novels progressed especially after book 2 antidote, the series kinda lost its steam. And this 5th one was the least intriguing. And I saw no point in book 4.5 either. Will definitely continue for the finale book 6. If not just to get closure but to maybe read Jack again.
51% and I'm struggling. It's weird because I feel like I really should be giving this book a high review, but the truth is I'm not enjoying this read. Phrases and speech patterns are getting repetitive and the long and winding internal dialogue, while interesting from a psychological perspective, is confusing and there's just too much of it.
And for all the talk about "the BDSM lifestyle", I really don't feel like I've gotten much of a representation at all. There's mention of how it shouldn't be used to correct disordered behavior and some philosophical discussions on the true nature of dominance and submission, but these discussions are always skirting around the subject rather than really digging into it. I'm honestly okay if the author decided that actual scening shouldn't come up too much because there is so much trauma and mental illness surrounding these characters, but give me something to think about at least. The first installment was the only one that did a really good job, I think. There has been potential for Ash's character, and a lot of it, but still just hints and insinuations - no real journey of discovery there. Or if there is, it's taking freaking forever and hiding under the 9,000 other layers to this book.
I hate .
I feel like I've gone through like 500,000 words waiting for something to "land" and it hasn't yet.
Warning: This book and series is not for everyone. It is very dark, morbid at times, there is scenes of violence and rape. So enter at your own risk. I Loved this series, and this was my most favorite of the series. It took the spinoff of Ash and combined it with Grey, Jan, Jack, Martin and the others. The characters are all amazing and the story well written. The plots, mystery and suspense all amazing too. The story is written in both Ashes perspective and Grey’s It is done so well you always know which group is being featured. Ashes story is so compelling, and I was absolutely flabbergasted at who did the murders. I really thought I had it and was like Jack you made this too easy…Boy was I wrong. Then I thought the story was over… nope, plenty more suspense to go and when Grey and Ash meet things really get crazy. With Don’t Jack had me feeling so different about that word every time I hear it and this one I was reading a fluffy romance and I came across the phrase butterflies in his stomach, I just about got sick. LOL Dan Calley’s Narration is spot on. His accents for each character paint the perfect picture of these men and their personalities. He has the perfect tone and pacing and adds all the excitement and invokes fear when needed. The narration is perfect for this series. I cannot wait for the next book!
I also did not, in fact, resist the siren song of this book. I am so happy my holiday has started or I'd have messed up my life. (Did that through books 1-4, but sssh, sleep is for the weak)
I love my (fictional) men traumatised, okay? And these men are half trauma, half men. The angst is delicious, right up my alley, and I thank whichever deity smiled upon me that day when I went looking for recommendations because damn, is this series hitting hard. It's an addiction like heroin, but there's no methadone to save me. Oh, well. I'll live. Surely.
The thrill in thriller is still as great as ever, the mind games are great, the psychological aspect has me at the edge of my seat, the complex characters that have me both wanting to shake them until their brains rattle and hug them until they are fine and whole and healed, and the LOVE. The adoration and protection and fucking damn it, my heart is torn to pieces BUT I LOVE IT. All the back and forth, the push and pull, the desperation and sheer angst, I just. Where has this series been all my life???
Can't wait for Fractured to brutally rip off the bandaids on my heart.
As the story of Ash and Raif unfolds further, the answers becomes twisted and things I had only suspected turned true. And in between them is looks in to our triad and how things are far from..peachy. Martin's firm hold on Jack is taking their toll, and the few and far between glimpse we have of Jack seems to torture more than bring hope. Gray is falling in to his darker side and Martin is happily feeding the need for chaos and hurt, something Jan can only attempt to keep at bay, without knowing how deep he has gone.
It's different to see our men from the outside through someone else's eyes. How easily Gray's darkness is seen, how protective he truly is of what is his and how far he is pushed by now. This again gives a contrast to Jan and his strength that plays off Gray, how he works to keep them all together even without the certainty of Jack's return or with Gray slipping away.
I truly miss seeing Jack. Martin is clever with and cruel with that tempting dark that you just want to join in and play. But Jack is something else and so very missed.
Twisted and dark...Jack L. Pyke does this so well and this installment did not disappoint. Gah, I love Gray, Jan, and Jack/Martin and my heart hurts for them so much. That just grew with this novel. I cannot wait for more!!
Ash, Raif, Chase, and Lucy...it will be interesting to see where their story goes. Spinoff maybe?
Loved all the new characters, Ash, Raif, Chase, Miles, Little Lucy, they are so much more real and heart feel than the characters borrowed from other people’s books. I miss Jack a little, but Martin is infinitely more entertaining to watch. His dynamic with Gray make my blood boil. Looking forward to see he drag down the Mighty Dom.
Wow! This author keeps on surprising me at every turn....and I love it! The writing is so detailed, dark and satisfying. Jack L. Pyke takes her time and in her amazing well established unique writing style peels back the emotional and psychological layers of every character. Simply Amazing!
