The herbarium is a collection that consists of plant specimens that are neatly dried, preserved, and arranged according to a classification system to allow for easy retrieval access and archival storage.

The story of this book revolves around a small boy. In this world of nuclear families confined within the four walls of concrete buildings and flats, this young boy's quest to discover nature will give you a refreshing reading experience.

This book is both directly and indirectly reminding us of the need to protect nature and the plants which are getting destroyed at an alarming rate. If you are someone who loves plants and gardening, this is a book that you should never miss.

The book is all about changing micro-environment of humans today. The author has succeeded in presenting the main character, a boy who get exposed to nature after reaching in Kerala from the deserts, the changes in him from a full time gamer to a nature lover. How to mould childhood as a parent is also been presented well in the book. The book also highlights agriculture, and nature a science in very interesting manner.

The story started out in an engaging manner and successfully kept me hooked for a while. I particularly loved the author's use of certain similes, and interesting perspective on social structures and the caste system. Somewhere along the middle, it changed directions and became a forced botany lesson, with very unrealistic turns and an Utopian climax. Many plot holes are present and particularly, the take on a child dealing with his mother's son seemed very unconvincing and incomplete.

Herbarium — Sonia Rafeek

Translated from Malayalam by Ministhy S.

There are things Fatima leaves behind for her son, Tipu that cannot be packed into a suitcase.

When Tipu, a Dubai-born boy accustomed to screens, Minecraft and the familiar comforts of his everyday life, arrives in Kerala, he finds himself in a world that seems almost entirely foreign to him. At his grandmother Nabeezath’s home, trees, insects, plants and the rhythms of a place he has never really known begin to occupy his attention. These are precisely the things his mother, Fatima, had always noticed and loved.

What begins as bewilderment gradually turns into curiosity. Tipu starts looking more closely, asking questions and discovering the world through experiences that cannot be paused, restarted or contained within a screen. Even his love for Minecraft finds a new expression in
HerbaRush, as the natural world he is discovering begins to find its way into the games he plays.

But Herbarium is not simply a story about a city child discovering nature. At its heart is Tipu’s attempt to understand his mother. Through the plants she cared about, the things she collected, her notes and the memories surrounding her, he begins to uncover parts of Fatima that he had never fully understood when she was beside him.

That makes the novel’s relationship with nature especially affecting. The trees and plants are not merely beautiful details in the background; they become part of Tipu’s emotional journey. Every new discovery seems to bring him a little closer to the mother he is trying to know again.

And the title carries a lovely resonance. A herbarium preserves fragments of plants, separated from their original surroundings yet carefully kept. Tipu, in much the same way, gathers fragments of Fatima memories, objects, stories and impressions and slowly tries to understand the whole from what remains.

Sonia Rafeek creates a story that is gentle without being sentimental, imaginative without losing its emotional core, and deeply rooted in the experience of a child learning to see.

Perhaps that is what Tipu ultimately learns, sometimes, to understand someone you have lost, you have to begin by noticing the things they loved.

🍃This is one of those books which made me fall in love with listening to audio books (as I have listened in @storytel.in ) . Usually I don't fangirl about authors  but this books has changed that. This is the first book I read from the author Sonia Rafeek and I became smitten with the narrative style;  a simple storyline to caution a very relevant issue.
.
.
🍃The title 'Herbarium' is very much apt for the book. Herbarium is a file or a document which consists of the plant's specimens neatly dried and pressed with their scientific name, place and date on which it is found and other descriptions. This herbarium is diverse. But today the saddest part is that the diversity of plants is nowhere on our earth and our earth is depleting. The book cast light on how we human beings are destroying the rights of plants and animals to live on earth just like us. We are only a part of them or one of them. We as rational beings have no right to destroy our mother earth because of greediness. The book also showcases how our new generation is devoid of the pleasures which one can seek from the nature. It is said that one who can love nature, plants, animals and care for them, they can never harm another human being or a living being. If such is our earth how wonderful it will be.
.
.
🍃The story unfolds through a nine year old boy 'Tippu' whose life get transported from the four walls of his flat abroad to the magnanimity of the outer world. It is all about his curiosity and how he discovers the hidden secrets of the nature.
.
.
🍃This cute, lovely and excellent work is narrated in an innocent way. It will definitely be a good read for the nature lovers. But I recommend this awesome book to all the mallus out there especially during this time when the whole world is suffering the pandemic. At least now it is the time to rise and work for a better future for our mother earth a child can't help himself/herself from suffering when his/her mother is dying. So we can take a pledge not to cause any more harm to our nature because we belong to nature, nature don't belong to us.

Herabarium - Sonia Rafeek

It’s been while I read a book translated from Malayalam. One of the reasons to pick it is the cover and the blurb. A different kind of story. But it was to reconnect with our nature. It was a top-notch storytelling. I loved how the author portrayed the nature for the kids to involve themselves in the story. It was out of the world. The imagination of the game named Herbarush was blowing. Almost I spilled most of the story, I think.

Tipu, who was raised in Dubai. After his mother's passing, he was brought to native land in Kerala. Tipu, who is trying to get used to the new land. His questioning of different things was amazing. Along with him, Ammalu, the cutie pie who becomes a friend of Tipu. Just imagine they set to explore the backyard of their house. Slowly, they start to love and create a game out of the love they have towards nature. While reading, I got reminded of a wedding video where there was a serpent grove in the backyard; it was so delightful to come across the same imagery.

Vineet played a great role in children installing the idea of the sensory world of nature. A heartfelt read, and I absolutely enjoyed every bit of the story. I wondered why they don’t implement such activities in schools too. The ending was wholesome and satisfied. Being a nature lover, this was something that felt so special to read. Definitely go read this book.
