For Max Duncan, the word Sundown means one thing… RUN.
Corpses infected with a mysterious, incurable virus are roaming free throughout the United States, feasting upon the living. The Duncan family compound in Montana is Max’s only hope for survival— but to get there, she has to flee from South Carolina and survive crossing several states with her daughter Jack in tow.
Max has a choice to make. Does she risk her own life, and her daughter’s, to find the man she’s always loved?
Griffin Wells was Max’s high school sweetheart, and he has no idea that Jack is his child. Max still has feelings for him, and the apocalypse has suddenly brought those emotions to the surface, strong as they ever were.
But zombies are the least of their worries. The government knows more about the infected than it’s willing to expose, and the military has plans for Max’s family you’ll never see coming…
** A post-apocalyptic dystopian thrill ride, SURVIVE is the latest installment in a dark and exciting series for adults by author Courtney Konstantin. If you enjoy edgy and daring doomsday prepper novels, these books will become your latest reading addiction!
As a child, Courtney always had aspirations of being a writer. She participated in journalism in school. At home, she wrote short stories, poetry and filled diary pages. Somewhere along the line becoming an adult took priority over her writing and she went to work in business operations.
Now as a mother to three beautiful children, she tells them all the time to follow their dreams, be whatever they want. Those lessons reminded her how much she loved writing. She finally opened the door to making writing a real priority in her life.
Living outside of Portland, Oregon she loves the green and beauty Oregon offers. When she’s not matching wits with her children, her crazy Siberian Husky or her bi-polar cats, she enjoys binge reading, hikes and touring wineries. Courtney and her husband, the love of her life, enjoy traveling the world whenever they can get a free moment. And cruises….she loves cruising. She’s especially fond of life, laughter and sarcasm – and she’s excited to share all of that and more with her readers!
This series was recommended in a group I’m in so I jumped onto Amazon and grabbed the series, I’m slowly making my way through them.
When Max's sister Alex had managed to get in touch with her before all lines of communication were cut off, one word stood out above all the rest SUNDOWN code word for shits hitting the fan, run, make it to the compound.
Grabbing their bug out bags they get on the road taking a detour towards the boy she loved who supposedly had left her behind when they were in their early 20's and he was on his way to bootcamp promising to keep in touch. She hasn't seen or heard from him since. Now that the worlds ending as she knows it she needs to know if he's still alive and to let him know that Jack is his.
These siblings are so tough, Max especially when it comes to protecting her daughter Jack, even if it means going into full out combat mode against bigger components when it’s not just the zombies she has to contend with, there’s a commander and his minion soldiers seeking her brother for questioning. They nearly killed her for information they thought she was withholding.
These fal short in the romance category which I've kind of come to expect in this genre, so be aware of that when jumping into this series.
The author has definitely hit her stride when it comes to her writing style, the last two compared to the first in the series flowed so much better, longer sentences, less full stops, easier to follow, less errors, making it a much better reading experience.
**3.5** This book was slightly better than the first one. Max is quite a badass wielding her tactical tomahawk while keeping her eight-year-old daughter safe behind her. Like her sister in the first book, Max is also making her way to Montana, to the family compound. She decides to make a slight detour to look up her high school sweetheart, Griffin. She last heard from him when he was leaving for boot camp over eight years ago.
Tons of non-stop action, and some really brutal torture of a woman.
There is some slight romance with some kisses. Maybe in book 3 we'll make it to second base. I really shouldn't judge, as these books aren't listed as romantic apocalypse stories. Just your basic survivalist zombie apocalypse stories featuring kickass women...with kids. And honestly is there anything more ferocious than a mother protecting her children?
We met Alex in the first book this is Max's book. The sister to Alex. Oh man I have to say the author does a fantastic job of giving us very different female leads. I liked that you can tell both sisters are strong because of how they were raised but Max. Well she loved all the survival stuff and that completely shows. She doesn't second guess she just gets things done.
Jack her daughter is a lot like her, but I see the softer side too and again kids in the middle of the world ending way cool I tell ya. Something you don't think will work but if anyone can its these ladies.
Max really has it rough in this one, she makes the hard choice to go after her ex aka Jack's father. Who is just as surprised to see her. Then the hard truth comes out. And then torture!! I mean wow. this book has it all.
I can't freaking wait for book 3 I have my fingers crossed its the brothers book. Again the narration really was top notch.
Many editing problems that caught my eye and slowed me down. Story was good but could have been done in half the words. I mean, how many unnecessary risks does the MC need to take to prove she is a bad ass? Stupid. Also, any prepper knows that being prepared means having your route planned out in advance. Several different routes, in fact. Other things bothered me, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who decides to read it. Like I said: a decent story line, but...
I liked this book as well as the series as a whole so far, though I have some concerns about Max. It seemed really foolhardy after seeing the dire situation on the news, as well as seeing some infected up close and personal to try to go to the office to find the address of a lady who was once kind to you (someone you obviously did not know all that well). Very foolhardy when you have an eight year old child with you. I also found her judgment questionable in going to Raleigh (not at all on the route from South Carolina to Montana) to try to find a man she has not seen for eight years. That was marginally a little more understandable than the office lady, because it would have been a more dull story with just Max and Jack kicking on to Montana and no ex to cause drama. It was a little on the fantastically, amazing side of coincidence that she managed to find him in a random camp. The maniacal military officer has been done a lot and it was a little on the fantastically, amazing side of coincidence that the officer knew who Max and her family were and hunted her brother. Still, I found most of the story interesting and the action moved along nicely. With all of her faults, Max is a very strong female lead that takes no prisoners. This was not too different from Alex's story in book one and it does not seem that we will see much of the Montana compound. I am interested in the next book to see what happens.
I liked the main character’s awareness that she doesn’t deal with emotions well. I struggle to relate to that but it worked in the apocalyptic world. The daughter’s character was unrealistic for an 8 year old. The G character was perhaps the best developed character in the book except his letters. Not enough anger for a guy. The violence at the hands of the protagonist was excessive for me but that may work well for others. Needed more editing for sentence structure and spelling but I understand how hard that is to find in the indie world. All in all it kept me interested and reading. I will likely read the next book in the series.
The twists and turns just keep coming! The storyline on this series is addictive and this book kept me guessing. It follows Max (sister to Alex from book 1) and the apocalypse did not go easy on her! Loved it from page 1 and it did make me cry a few times so be warned on that! Jumping straight into book 3 now!
Max got on my nerves for her actions many times throughout this book. But I still love the found family, and the family bonds. I am eager to see what is happening with Rafe in the next book.
So I thought I really loves the 1st book. Then I started reading this 1. Max is now my all time favorite character she is sassy smart and will do whatever it takes to protect the people that she loves. This spit and vinegar this character has is still relatable and makes you laugh even in the middle of a the zombie Apocalypse. I am beyond excited for the 3rd book because it seems like each book becomes more and more amazing way to go Courtney I'm so impressed
While Max can be infuriating at times, I love her sarcasm and wit. Her loyalty and her fierce protectiveness of her loved ones is admirable. I love this series.
11/01/19: Still reading, but this love triangle between Max, Sarah, and griffin is getting old. FAST! Get to the point, or kill one of them off because it's coming across as juvenile and immature for women this age.
Secondly, how is Max SO skilled? I mean yes, her father was a prepper. But there's a fine line between the character being prepared, and her being overly exaggerated! So she seriously went to a Military base, refused to turn over her weapons, had multiple guns pointed at her, and was STILL able to overpower one of them? #Yawn, such a cliché! And then when the base camp got overrun her baby daddy and his Army buddy BOTH jump ship to follow her leaving helpless civilians behind?? And she was killing more zombies with her hatchet than the Military with weapons???? It's like the author is overcompensating.
And why is Sarah so weak? She is the total opposite of Max. It's like she's comparable to the early 2000's version of Paris Hilton. Or Jessica Simpson (insert eye roll). We already get that Max is a "Super Woman", but it's like Sarah was deliberately made ultra weak to make Max seem more superhuman than she already is.
11/06/2019: Sigh. I'm finally done with this book which took me longer than normal to get through because of the romance angle. This book frustrated me so bad, which was surprising because I truly enjoyed book 1. WARNING, if you don't want to read the confused ramblings of a disgruntle book reader I implore you to exit now. If you choose to stay, please know that it will be a long, and at time, crazy rant! LOL
Ok. Max turmoil about her and Griffin (and Jaq) started wearing on my nerves from the jump. I understand that she wanted her to know who her father was, and I ALSO understand that she wasn't ready to jump up and tell him within minutes of reconnecting, but did she have to pine over every other chapter??? WE GET IT!!! It's his child, and he needs to know. Either tell him, or stop talking about it. UGH!!!! It got to the point that I started skipping over her inner monologues just so I could STOP hearing about it. It annoyed me so bad. So much so that I just wrote a paragraph about it. LOL AND THEN she didn't confess until the 20th chapter!! There are only 26 in the book. The author dragged it out to the end. The whole point of her going to find Griffin was to let him know about his daughter, and yet it took almost the entire book for that secret to be revealed. Plus she kept acting like a love struck teenager whenever he was around. How could she be a bad ass "warrior", but tongue tide and uncertain whenever Griffin is around??
And later on in the book, her come Ms. Xena Warrior Princess confronted by the Military (again), and she's able to break ones nose, dislocate someone's arm, and bash yet another head. ALL THE WHILE surrounded by other Military personnel????? HOW??? It's as if the author binged watched the most bad ass female movies, and merged them all into this character. Now don't get me wrong. I'm all for strong female leads/character, but this one was just too much. Every time she's in a battle (even with Griffin and the other guys around) she seems to be the lone hero who takes out every "bad guy" they come up against? I ended skipping over the part where Jaq was being taken away at the base. Once again the fight scene was so over done that I couldn't stomach anymore.
Not surprisingly I was happy when she was finally captured and tortured. Now don't get me wrong. I DO NOT condone the unethical treatment of civilians in Military custody (former soldier myself), but it made her more human. Regular, if you will. She was no longer the "All Powerful Max". It made the story "normal". Up until that point, it was like she was a crazed locked away psycho who had NO previous interaction with the outside world. Her and Jaq left the compound when she was 1, she's now 8. There was plenty of worldly experience in those 7 years.
Sigh, I guess I'm done venting. There was an interesting twist in the end (the Military knowing about the compound) that almost, ALMOST makes me want to find out about the brother and his connection to the plaque. But this book left a bad taste in my mouth, and I don't think I want to continue this series.

The latest in my post-apocalyptic streak lately. This FMC is amazing. I loved her. She's so self assured and confident, and a total baddie made for a zombie apocalypse. Sure she has a bit of a hero complex and she struggles with feelings or with how to comfort others after their loss, but she protected herself and daughter and anyone else they came across.
I like the daughter as well. Brave and street smart. So much like her mother, as she had been trained similarly, but also very compassionate and sweet.
‼️ Spoilers
I did not like the MMC, and I feel that's mostly because the story had very little relationship development. When they first find him, he's got a woman hanging off of him, making moves on him that he does nothing to stop, in fact he's openly angry with the FMC anytime she gets annoyed with her. And their relationship is never explained or discussed after the woman conveniently dies.
After which point, the MMC suddenly makes a move on the FMC.
We continue to have no relationship development as things happen and secrets are revealed (it's not a spoiler: he's the girl's father), but they hardly discuss any of it before they just put it aside and move on.
They don't discuss the fact that he was patronizing towards her for not immediately trusting the military guys when he forced her to surrender to them. Nor do they discuss that he mansplains to her how she needed to calm down and trust the military when they were trying to take their daughter from them to take to a separate facility. He never apologizes for not listening to her when she knew something was wrong, and it resulted in her being tortured for days.
But then he rescues her and he's calling her baby now and one day later they love each other again and the story ends.
I guess I should be clear that the survival and action aspects of the story are really good. They kept me up late reading. I just really really wanted to see the relationship develop instead of having it happen off page or wherever it happened. He was so supportive of her and confident in her skills that it was almost shocking when he chastised her for the way she reacted at times. They needed more interactions between the two of them to sort it all out.
So Max Duncan is where it's at. Konstantin ups her game with book two, Survive, of the Sundown series. The youngest Duncan sibling, Max and her daughter, Jack, have the longest road to travel in the new apocalypse. From South Caroline to Montana, Max really flourishes as her prepper dad's training comes into hand combating the world filled with walking corpses.
Max and Jack are a different family duo. Neither is overly emotional until the world ends, causing strong bonds and alliances between themselves but also with those they meet along the way. Konstantin really ups the connection to others in this novel as Max travels across the US in search of her high school sweetheart on their way to the compound. The struggle is made even more real when they realize the government they knew is no longer the government in play. Struggling to protect her family, Max endures the worst that this world has to offer before finding her way home.
Konstantin really redeemed herself with Max's story. Max's character had deep rooted connections and history prior to the end of the world. I think that helped the reader connect deeper with her than her sister Alex who was featured in the first book. In Survive, we already have a setting figured out and can really focus on her journey both physically and emotionally.
Book 1 got 4 stars because the only roll my eyes moment was when Alex got mad and suddenly shouted "my husband is dead!" and her children were in ear shot- and then her 8 year old goes running off during a zombie apocalypse. I forgave Alex for this because she hadn't even had time to process her own grief, so I can understand not telling her children as then it would force her to, and she needed to keep moving. Plus that wasn't the overwhelming narrative of the story.
This one gets 3 stars because I felt like I was getting beaten over the head for 3/4 of the book with "he doesn't know he's her father; he doesn't know he's her father; he doesn't know he's her father" and then the worst one "I'm scare of how angry he'll be when I tell him, and he'll hate me". UUuuuuuggggghhhhhh. So tired of that trope. I almost gave it 2 stars because it was the entire book...
And then the last quarter saved it. All the secrets were out and the twist came. Very nice.
Knocked down because of the trope, I'm still invested in this family story and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

The level of emotional investment I have in this series is ridiculous at this point. I LOVE the Duncans (this includes the honorary Duncans, Easton and Candace. This review serves as my application to become an honorary Duncan as well).
I absolutely adored Alex in the first book of the Sundown series, so I was interested to see how her sister, Max, would be portrayed in the second book. I was extremely impressed with how distinct the author made the two sisters from each other!
While Alex seems more emotionally healthy and mature, and is very motherly and compassionate, Max is a no nonsense, efficient, down to business personality with no patience for idiocy or unpreparedness. She’s not great at dealing with emotions, either, and has a lot of pent up stuff to take care of. However, just like Alex, Max loves her daughter and does everything she can to protect her and keep her safe.
I love Max. Also, this book broke my heart a little bit. Also also, I’m in love with this series, and I am S T R E S S E D.
Really I give this book a 3.5 Stars...I really like this book and I read it before realizing it's book two... I have no clue what book one would even be about considering this book takes place the day of the outbreak. I genuinely like the book but I did get annoyed by a few things. 1. all the girl characters have male names and it just gets so confusing. It just really was not necessary for the storyline. It was probably the main thing that irritated me the most about this book. Also the overuse of the word "infected".. just out of curiosity I counted the word used 11 times on one page!!!. There are so many other words she could use in those moments "infected" is not always necessary. I'm not running to book three but I did enjoy this as a standalone. Minus those two annoying factors.
I did enjoy the book overall but wow...some of the storyline was extremely far fetched. She somehow finds her ex boyfriend who fathered her child during the zombie apocalypse..huh? Lol. Then she somehow runs into people who know her brother and are looking for him, plus they know who she is. Also, she keeps going out of her way to help people and continously putting her and her daughters life in danger. While I think that is a noble and caring thing to want to help, it doesn't seem realistic. But with all of that out of the way, I did enjoy reading about Max's journey to Montana to meet her family at the compound. It still kept me interested and I will continue with the series. Looks like the next one is about her brother and his journey.
I just finished Alone and I want more. Prepared was great and Alone is fantastic. I do not want to spoil the story for anyone so I will just say that I loved Max and didn't want the book to end. Ms. Constantine keeps raising the bar with each book and I can't wait for Rafes story, that is how I rate a really good author when I just finish a book and I'm already impatient for the next book in the series! I really hope that the series does not end with Rafes book because this one is just to good to let go. Thanks Ms Konstantin for the pleasure this series is giving me!
Unrealistic - Zombies in a mall with lots of dangerous humans too, what do you do? Seek out danger and try to save strangers or go find your kid and protect them?
If you picked leave your young child alone to fend for herself in a sporting goods store, you’d be correct.
She needs to ‘take care of the looters first’ even though zombies are in the store. Ugh. Seriously??!
Plot other than stupidity of main character is good. Pace great. Writing great. Moms leaving their kids to always save strangers? Uhm, not realistic.
No mom leaves their kids in a life and death situation. Moms protect their kids first, not strangers.
I enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to the second in this series. As another reviewer notes, there was just horrific, brutal violence thrown in for some effect (the author got tired of writing about zombies?). As a female author, I am surprised she would resort to straight-up abuse of a female character (there is a reason noted, but the behavior far outweighs the reasons). Not clear why, other than to break up the monotony of her plot. I won’t read on. There is a place for violence in fiction, done well – this was just abuse and violence for the sake of it.
This is one of the better zompocalypse books I have read and definitely better than the first. The inclusion of a long lost boyfriend/baby daddy who didn't know he had a daughter really made this book interesting. Not to mention the air of mystery concerning her brother, that we learn about towards the end. This has ensured I will definitely read the 3rd book, but will probably wait for the audible version. I read the first two via audible and the narrator was a good fit.
I love this type of story and it’s just as well written as the first book, but the MC had me so frustrated. She’s supposed to be a strong badass but instead she’s just kind of insecure and it pulls away from the story. As long as you can get past that it’s still a good story. Definitely not just another version of the first book and the action in this one is very different, plus there’s a little bit of a romance aspect.
I had been feeling like an apocolypse vibe that wasn't The Walking Dead. So I took to amazon (who wouldnt?) And found this series. While the writing is definitely novice, I found the pacing to be entertaining and fast paced. I've read apocolypse books in the past that quickly turn stale, with the same thing happening over and over. But this series as just enough twists and turns to make me ready for the next one. I just have to see how it ends!
I do love the story itself. It's very well written but this one was a little darker for my liking . The main character was definitely more bitter and jaded than I thought she would be considering how the older sister was raised in the first book and some of the characters killedI didnt agree with. But that's what makes great writing being able to invoke emotions out of others.
OMG !This second Book from the Sundown Series had me on the edge of my seat .Griffin and Max found each other . And it was a wild ride getting to Montana. The things that happened on the way were nerve wracking between walking dead and other enemies that are after them.So many surprises. Can’t wait to see what will happen in the next book.
Warrior women, love and zombies. What more could you ask for? Really enjoyed the first two books in this saga. Can't wait to read the last one. Where is their brother? Did he have something to do with this plague? Can be sure it? These are a must read if you like end of the world books and flesh eating zombies.
